I am the same height and weight of you and also do Zumba DVD's. I do the Zumba Live DVD and use the Polar HRM and burn between 480-550 calories. I can't do the moves just like on the DVD but, like you said, I have a great time doing it AND getting some exercise and losing calories while having fun.
I have the Original Zumba Fitness (like the one on TV infomercials) and love it. I actually bought that one but seen on QVC they offered the same one but with 3 CD's of the music and a few other DVD's not included in the original. I gave the first set to my daughter to get her started Zumbaing too.
I have gone a little Zumba crazy lately and ordered the Zumba Z1 shoes, a pair of 2010 Zumba Convention shoes, and the Slip-on's for regular shoes. I already own the Nike Musique shoes and the Ryka Transition shoes. Just trying to find the best solution for doing Zumba at home on a carpeted floor.
I think I have it all covered in terms of footwear now! ;)

I am 5'4", 161 lbs, use a Polar heart rate monitor and burn 300-320 when I do the Cardio Party DVD. I have never burned the number of calories (600-800/hr) that I often hear other people burn, but I also am not going all out. I am happy with my numbers because it is about the same number I used to burn slowly jogging 3 miles in 45 min on the treadmill, and Zumba is a heck of a lot more fun!!!

I burn a lot more at home than the classes. But that may be because I tend to do it a lot harder by myself than in front of people. I'm a little shy, lol. But I use a monitor and it ranges in 850s.

My doctor said he checked out zumba for his patients and learned you can actually burn 1500 calories per hour. Each instructor is different, and the dvd's are not as good as classes as far as that aspect of it goes. My instructor is high intensity and high cardio so I dont doubt for a NY minute that its every bit of 1500. But I didnt realize there is a device out there that can check it. How or where do I get that? I will verify for myself what I am getting out of my workouts with my instructor. I do the dvd's when there isnt a class at the gyms that I can get to.

A lot of things can cause the calorie burn to vary. When I first started I burned close to 800 calories. 6 mnths later I am lucky to hit 700. It varys at every zumba class also. If you are just learning zumba give yourself time to learn the moves.

Thanks for the responses.. I guess I'm not pushing myself very hard b/c I don't get near those numbers while doing the video...

I trust the HRM, but I feel like I'm not getting that good of a workout.. Guess it is b/c I'm not just getting used to it.

Thanks Again

Calorie burn will depend on a lot of things. Your height, weight and how much you put into your workout. I wear a HRM and I can burn anywhere from 678 to over 1000. Normally my calorie burn runs from 678 to 850 for an hour. I have burned over 1000 but that was for 1 1/2 hour special zumba I went to. Last night I only burn 699 calories for 61 minutes of a workout. I also did not push it very hard. If you have your HRM set right trust it.

It depends on how much energy you put into it. So the answer is, I don't know.

I read somewhere on a message board that you can use the kickboxing selection under Cardio. That is what I have used from the beginning. Good Luck!
