I use a heart rate monitor that counts calories. Each heart rate monitor has it's own forumla that takes into account your age, weight, height, gender, and (most importantly) heart rate.

I tend to burn 1100-1300cals per session because i am 243lbs and my heart rate lingers around 175-188 during a class. It's very effective, but it's also very high.

You are completely right. The amount of calories burned in Zumba depends on the weight, height and a lot on the instructor. It also depends on the intensity you do the exercises. On average, a person below 150 pounds will burn 500 calories.

Nonetheles, I got the Polar F6 about a week and a half ago, I'm now 180 pounds and I usually burn closer to 650-700 pounds per class. Yesterday I did a 1 1/2 hr Zumbathon and I burned 1,009 calories, 30% of those where from Fat.

I did a class with another instructor though and I didnt burn as much. You have to be careful not to go over your HR because you'll burn protein (muscles) instead of fat.

Ok, I tested out Zumba with my HRM today. I did the Zumba Fitness Basics (60 min.) with all the easy beats... I have to admit I only did about 40 min. of that one because I FFW'd through all the steps I already knew by heart.

THEN I did the Zumba Fitness 20-Minute Express (20 min.).

When all was done, I logged 1 hour and 5 minutes of exercise for both DVD segments on my HRM and it said I burned 509 calories, 35% of those being fat calories.

My maximum heart rate was 158 (93%) and average heart rate was 138 (81%). I thinks it's fair to say most of the heart rate rise was during the last 20 minutes for sure.

Hope that helps for anyone who was curious how many calories you'd burn doing Zumba. I will try the 50 min. Zumba Cardio Party with my HRM next time and see what I come up with.

I think the amount of calories a person burns during ZUMBA is going to depend on their age, height, weight, and the intensity they are zumba'ing... I would expect an instructor who is doing all those moves and knows them by hand - to burn quite a bit more than the participants who maybe don't know all the moves but are trying to just follow along??

Also I went to this class where it was so packed, I had like a 3-4 foot moving radius around me and was backed up against a wall so I got hardly any workout while people a few rows in front of me had all the room in the world to move their arms, jump and so forth. Clearly they got a better workout because they were able to MOVE MORE than I was!

There's too many factors involved for a standard amount of calories per workout to be given.

I have a Polar F6 HRM with chest-strap, haven't used it for Zumba yet though. I am over 250 pounds so I am guessing I am getting a good 400-700 cals burnt. I would expect someone lighter to burn less though I don't know?? Depends on their instructor, the moves they do, and the intensity again...

Today when the class ended the instructor checked her HRM and said she had burned 700 calories. Two of us in the class also wear them and we both had about 450. Can there be that much difference? She was a sub and we didn't know her routines, but that seems like an awful big difference.

I'm a Zumba instructor and was looking for some actual data from people who have measured their calorie burn doing Zumba, so this thread has been very interesting to me. I've also heard anywhere from 300 - 1000 calories in an hour --quite a range but it's not surprising since the intensity of the workout depends so much on the person. If you're looking to burn more calories, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
#1-- if you are new to group exercise, or dance you'll most likely burn fewer calories in the beginning because you'll be so busy trying to figure out where to put your feet and arms! It DOES get better over time. When learning, aim to get the leg movements first and worry about arms later -- you'll get much more bang for your buck calorie burning wise and you'll feel more competent. If you're really confused don't just stop. Jog in place or do jumping jacks while you watch for a while.

#2 --Even if you are able to follow the moves no problem, there are still so many things you can do to amp up the workout. Use your whole body all the time--don't just move your legs, engage your abs, move your arms, your shoulders, your hips--makes a huge difference. When you take a step, make it a big step or even add a bounce to your steps if you can. When you bend your knees, bend deeper, when you lift your arm, don't throw it in the air, place it with control, keep your abs tight all the time-- it will help protect you from injury and allow you to move with more range too.

#3 -- the instructor also has a big influence on how many calories you burn. Are there long pauses between songs? Don't stop during music breaks, just keep marching, bouncing, anything to keep it going. Instructors vary a lot in how intensely they work too. If your instructor works very hard, you will be more inclined to yourself. If not, you can still increase your own intensity, it's just harder and you have to really push yourself.

Bottom line, find a class you like and keep going. The more familiar it becomes, the easier it will be for you to get a good workout

My instructor, Candy, has just started us on a whole lot of new stuff. She said with the new routines we should burn about 700 to 1000 calories. We do quite a lot more jumping and bouncing around and a lot more hand and arm movements so this would definitely add to the calories burned. 1 warm up song in the beginning and only after the hour, we do a slow cumbia or salsa and then stretches. I love to Zumba!!! I enter it as a fast dance on my tracker though.

I got a Heart Rate Monitor watch for $30 at Walmart. It takes into account your age, height, weight, and does a resting heart rate for 3 days before calculating your resting heart rate.

I drip buckets of sweat when I Zumba and for 60 minutes I'm hitting anywhere from 650-750 calories per session.

It isn't about how many times we get knocked down, but how many times we get back up again.

You can manually add Zumba in the tracker. I wear a polar F6 heart monitor and on average for 60 minutes of Zumba I burn 425 calories.

They don't have Zumba in the fitness tracker emoticon

I always use "fast dance".

I think walking is listed on the fitness tracker.

Good luck! emoticon

I just read your post here. I went to my first class last night. Little did I know that Wednesday nights are the HIGH INTENSITY classes! Good Gosh I was worn out when I left HA Anyways it was a 1 hour class and I can tell you we did not stop until 6:30 on the dot! Ha how many calories do you generally burn for a 1 hour high intensity class?

It depends on the intensity of the class and of course, how hard you work out...but the average calorie burn is from 400-900 calories per one hour class.
