Welcome back, Mimi! I'm glad you had a good trip. Actually, my diet could improve, although I wouldn't say it's awful. Re: VF--look for the (very large) thread about Collage.

Another train wreck? Oh boy! I leave town for a couple of days and miss all the fun stuff! I can't wait to see what this latest one is about!

Virginia was very beautiful. I saw a lot of gorgeous scenery and ate a lot of food. Including a huge, delicious breakfast made by the owner of the lovely little inn where I stayed. And of course the "snack box" on the plane -- the most unholy assortment of fat, cholesterol, sugar and preservatives I've ever inhaled in one sitting. I lost a pound or two, though -- not even going to try to figure that one out.

You guys are doing so well, with your shopping and eating as planned and exercising and walking. I'm going work on doing something that I can write about proudly too.

I'm a little sore today from yesterday's p.t. session. They've got me on the weight machines and I'm not used to that! I've started wearing the pedometer again, too. I've got about 5,000 steps so far and will probably put on about 1,000 more by the end of the day. I feel pretty good about that considering that I was only getting up to about 3,000 steps when I first started wearing it.

I haven't journaled (is that a word?) for a week. I'll take that back up again tomorrow.

I would have checked in earlier, but got caught up with the latest train-wreck on vf. Thankfully, I held myself back from posting what I thought. I'm so glad you didn't post, there either, Andrea. I might have had to rescue you!! ;-D

I'm hanging in there with the eating. It's good to have a tiny bit more control over my diet, although I feel like I'm still settling into this school year.

Today for some reason, my eating has been good. And it's a big exercise day for me, so all should be well in the weight department.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Planned and shopped for a week's worth of meals! Wow, you win! Where's the spark points for that kind of dedication!

I'm just going to try to eat healthy foods in healthy portions for the next few days while I get caught up on chores, errands, etc.--things that I put off while sick. For exercise, I've got to get back to doing my p.t. for my knee and back--the bare minimum at least. But my p.t. (now that I've added back care) includes a good workout for lower body and core, so that's half the battle!

Heck if I know. We ate like pigs. But we were very active. We rode our bikes, swam, hiked.... Since I was keeping up with DH rather than just regulating my own pace, I suppose I worked harder than I normally do.

Yesterday I swam and did gentle yoga. Today it's raining, and I have jury duty and an evening meeting, so I really don't know what kind of exercise I'm going to fit in. But I'll try, I promise.

I also planned meals for the week AND shopped! I'm trying to pull it together around here. It's a slow process.

I'm back from vacation (on which I LOST weight!!!) and ready to get back to a regular workout regimen. It's also the first week of school for me, my first week of an empty house, and lots of other changes. So... I'm being nice to myself. I'm going to monitor but not not change my food habits and focus instead on developing an exercise plan that will work for the semester. That shouldn't take long, since I actually LIKE that part of healthy living! Then, next week I'll tweak the diet bit.

I haven't ready everyone's posts from while I was gone, but I wll, I promise. In the meantime, I hope everything is fine for everyone. Generic enough? ;)

Mimi: Too bad about Argentina, but I guess it would have been stressful any way you look at it--good or bad. Virginia! I love Virginia. I've been there several times as I have relatives in Alexandria. The weather should be beautiful this time of year, too. (If you like southern-style seafood, you might try the crabcakes!)

I restarted recording my food intake yesterday. Last night I wrote down the stats on some of the foods I eat on a regular basis so I can plug them into the "My Favorites" list--maybe it will make it a little easier for me to do the journaling.

Yes, I think it's a good idea to write it down, even if you don't know the amount, calories, fat, etc. And we can all watch our portion sizes, no matter what it is we are eating. I'm trying to get a better feel for eyeballing portion sizes so I don't overdo when I'm out in a restaurant or a party. It's hard and I hate always having to think about it, but here's hoping it gets easier and more of a subconsious kind of thing as time goes by and experience grows.

Welcome back, Donna! I'm glad you had a restful break. I hope to have a few days off someday. My work trip to Argentina was called off, which is okay since the travel time is sooo long. I'm going to Virginia next week instead, and I'm hoping to have a couple of hours to enjoy the scenery!

I should record my food, too, but I tend to balk at it these days because I'm eating so many things that are too hard to figure out as far as calories and nutritional value. I guess it might be good to go ahead and record everything anyway, without the calories. At least it's providing some sort of accountability.

I know how you feel about exercise, Donna. I did actually take two days off this weekend, and I didn't exercise. I just didn't feel up to it! Sleeping was much more fun! This week I'm going to try to do yoga when I get home at night and see how that goes. I'm not going to set my goals too high -- if I can just manage to maintain my current weight over the next few weeks I'll be doing great!

Hi, Mimi! Hi, Beth! I had a long (5 days) weekend, which was restful, I guess, although I felt really tired much of the time, and thus, I didn't exercise as much as I'd hoped I would. Maybe I got too much sleep!?

Anyway, I'm back at work today and am determined to stick to a plan re: eating properly. No. 1: Write it down! I don't know how many times I've read that the most successful losers (at weight loss!) are the ones who are recording their food consumption. So I've got to make that a priority. No. 2: Get back to my exercise program. I went for p.t for my back on Thursday and was given more exercises to do (so in addition to exercises for my knee, I now have to some for my back!). Luckily, a few of the exercises for my back are the same ones I'm doing for my knee!

Well, take care, everybody!

Hi Beth, welcome back, And happy belated birthday!

No need to apologize, and I certainly don't want to make anyone feel bad about not posting! But it's funny when you feel like you're completely monopolizing the board, and you're only posting maybe once a day! I've been "the quiet one" my whole life, so it's a strange sensation!

I've kind of been getting back on track with my eating, but I'm still a lot hungrier than I was a few weeks back. To remind myself how to eat right, I've been looking over my old Spark food logs from when I was being really good -- I find that's an excellent use of the logs. I think maybe it was so easy for me to eat right back then because I was exercising more -- when I would go home at night and work out, I never felt like eating much for dinner. But when I'm stuck sitting on my butt in an editing room until 10:00 at night, all I can think about is food!

How often do you do yoga, Beth? Do you find that it helps with weight loss at all? It's one of the few things I can deal with doing when I get home late.

-Mimi

HELLO! We're in the midst of an office move and department restructuring, so I've been scarce - sorry about that! Andrea is away, but I'm sure just fine :-)

I've got to get back on track with my eating, so I'm going to start logging my food every day here again. My birthday was last Wednesday, and hubby and I went away on our own this past weekend - it was wonderful, but we really enjoyed eating during that time too. My ice-cream cake leftover is going in the garbage tonight! I've also bagged my P90X rotation for now. I'm going to concentrate on good quality and variety of workouts and get my regular yoga practice back too. Once I get some of this fat off, I'll go back to the X because I do love the strength gains it gave me :-)

Congratulations on increasing your workouts, Donna! And a slice of veggie pizza is just fine -- you need some fuel for all that exercise!

It'll be lonely here without you -- maybe someone will keep me company, and if not, I'll get by!

Have a nice long weekend!

I feel like a chatterbox, too! I hope everything's okay with Andrea et al.

I've been eating pretty healthfully lately, but I must say it's not your 'traditional' healthy stuff--For example, I had a slice of pizza for lunch, but it was vegetarian so, hopefully, less fatty and more healthy?

Exercising has been going really well. I've increased my cardio time and have started using more poundage in my weight workouts. I'm not losing any weight, though, but I think I'm on the right course and it's just a matter of time.

Mimi, I hope you aren't all alone here for the next few days. I'm taking a long weekend and won't be back at the office (or computer) until Tuesday. Some of that time will go towards shopping for a home computer, though, so I can do my SP and VF stuff from home soon--I hope!

Take care. Maybe you'll get some buddies to join you over the weekend!

Nature's Path! I buy Flax Plus all the time, also by Nature's Path. I thought that Optimum cereal name sounded familiar. The Spicey Black Bean burgers are by Gardenburger, I'm pretty sure. I pair it with some low-fat cheddar on a whole-grain roll or bun, with a side of low-fat corn chips (like Guiltless Gourmet). Not the most balanced of meals, I guess, but it's lowfat, high protein, high fiber and reasonably nutritious. Maybe a side salad could go with it, too.

Also, I almost always pack a yogurt and fruit for an afternoon snack (unless I've eaten a really big lunch). That way, I'm not starving when I get home (at the much more reasonable hour of 5:00 p.m.!) and I can do my workout before dinner.

I'm glad to hear you stuck with your promise to make your salad. I hope others here appreciate it as well! (Where are they, anyhow?)

Thanks for the lunch suggestions, Donna. I'll check out the VF recipe board too. Do you make your Spicy Black Bean burgers, or do you buy them? That sounds good!

Optimum Rebound is made by Nature's Path -- I get it at Trader Joe's. I've also seen it at Whole Foods. I don't know if it's also at regular grocery stores -- I've been doing all my shopping at Trader Joe's for so long! Nature's Path cereal is organic and it doesn't have nearly as much sugar as a lot of other cereals. I also like their Hemp Plus Granola, which has Omega 3's. I'm a big fan of those Omega 3's!

I got home from work last night at 10:00 and made my big salad, even though all I wanted to do was collapse in front of the TV with a glass of wine. I know for sure that I would not have done any cooking if I hadn't vowed to do it here earlier in the day. How about that? This group is making me accountable!

Mimi: There were some pretty good ideas for brown-bagging over in the Recipe board at VF. I used to do those Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice frozen entrees, but got sick of them. Now I take a lot of turkey sandwiches, or Spicey Black Bean burgers to heat up in the microwave. Or leftovers like pasta/veggie/some-kind-of-protein concoctions that I make up with whatever is handy.

Actually, I think cereal sounds like a pretty good idea for a postworkout dinner. Sometimes if I've had a very intense workout (which hasn't been lately but that's a whole other story) I don't feel like eating a big meal, but I still need to eat something or I know I'll be starving by bed time. Optimum Rebound--What company makes that? It sounds familiar, but I've never tried it.

Going to a fair with a size zero who doesn't eat -- that's tough!

I'm in the same boat about post-workout dinners. I often just eat cereal (usually Optimum Rebound "post-workout" cereal) for dinner if I work out in the evening. Maybe not the healthiest habit, but it's easy, and it sure helps to cut down calories for the day!

Having my salad or some other kind of pre-prepped food around really helps me a lot. And I'm always looking for other ideas for healthful meals that are easy to pack for lunch -- I only have NY-style delis and Israeli restaurants near my office -- delicious, but not the best places for diet food!

That grain/veggie salad sounds pretty good. I might have to try something similar to that. I need pre-prepped healthy foods for when I'm too tired to prepare meals. I've been doing a split routine lately where I exercise both in the morning (usually something pretty light) and in the evening (more intense). And if I don't exercise as soon as I get home from work, it might not get done because I can poop out at any moment otherwise. Then after working out, I don't feel like fussing with anything, or I'm too tired to care what I eat.

OK, so this is sort of a mixture of diet- and exercise-talk here. Oh well--I'm TRYING to talk diet!!

(BTW, try going to the fair with a friend who's a size 0 and doesn't eat anything! Kinda puts a damper on pigouts--for me, at least.)

Well, Donna, I'd say you did pretty well for state fair eating! I mean, having a corn dog and dippin' dots at a fair is a given -- it just wouldn't be right otherwise! You should be proud that it wasn't 3 or 4 corn dogs, and that there were no elephant ears, cotton candy or funnel cake involved! And walking 2 miles is fabulous!

I AM DETERMINED to get myself back on track diet-wise this week. And to help make it happen, I'll put it in writing here and now. Tonight I will make my favorite back-to-basics grain/veggie salad, which I will munch on for the rest of the work week, and which always helps turn me around when I've strayed.

In case anyone's interested, here's what it is -- I cook up some lentils and barley and then add all kinds of raw fresh vegetables, plus some black olives and maybe artichoke hearts, some lightly sauteed tofu, and a little crumbled feta cheese. I toss it all with balsamic vinaigrette, and it makes a pretty complete meal that for some reason I don't get bored with, even when eating it once or twice a day. I just have to remember to snack on fruit, and I'm done worrying about nutrition.

There! I did it -- actual diet talk!

-Mimi

Mimi: You've hit the nail on the head for me. I'm not doing well with my eating program either. I went to the state fair yesterday and wore my pedometer (4300 steps, almost 2 miles!), but I had a large Coke and ate a corndog and small Dippin' Dots (ice cream). Then I got home and I was so exhausted (it was hot yesterday and very humid) so I couldn't move (much) and I didn't feel like preparing anything healthy for dinner--so I ate unhealthy, unbalanced stuff (like more ice cream, albeit 'light' ice cream). Ugh! Keeping a journal is just too hard if I have to be honest, too.

Sharon, watching closed-captioned TV while doing iTread is a great idea! I do these on the rebounder, too, and I always get a little bored because there's nothing to look at. This way, you can listen, watch and read -- nothing like a little mental overstimulation to make a workout go faster! I think I'll try that this weekend!

Donna, I know why I don't post about food -- I'm doing terribly on the diet front! I just had a yummy fish salad sandwich from the deli across the street from my office -- something tells me I'm not losing any weight today!

I've been using Walk Your Way Slim, which I used to think was a snoozer until I tried Leslie! ;-D

I've been thinking about getting the Madeleine Lewis workouts, but I'm trying not to buy anything right now. I'm hoping to take my walking workouts outdoors, too, as the weather cools. I have a few walking CDs to use for that.

I can't stick to journaling much, either, except for my exercise journal--which, as I've said, is NOT my problem, yet here I am talking about exercise! emoticon

I've had a good week but really can't seem to stick with the journalling.

Donna, I've been using the itreads on my rebounder while watching TV closed caption. I has been surprisingly fun. I also like Madeline Lewis' Get Moving Walk Workout (or something like that) -- aside from the walking it has a great stretch at the end. I too have tried Leslie but find her to be a snoozer.

Bar Method/Lotte Berk--there you go!! Who needs Pilates, anyway?! I have the Bar Methods and when I used them, I discovered muscles I never knew I had. I should try those again, but I just can't find time to rotate them into my schedule, it seems. I'm into weights and walking workouts right now, plus a couple of days of yoga per week.

The weekend! Yay! Thank goodness I have an editor who won't work weekends, so I get a little time off!

Donna, you inspired me -- I walked to work this morning! It's just a little over a mile, but it was something!

Re Karen Voight Pilates -- I bought that DVD several years ago after reading on VF about how effective it is. I like it a lot, but again, I don't really feel it! In fact, I went out and got new pilates ring that was stiffer than my old one to make the workout more difficult. I guess I've got some muscles underneath all the lower body fat! And with abs, I have the opposite problem -- a lot of pilates abs exercises are just too hard for me to do, so I'm not getting anything out of them, either! Maybe my body just wasn't built for pilates!

I'm going to do all of the Winsor DVD's I just got, and if I'm still not "getting" it, I'll probably abandon pilates again and go back to my Bar Method/Lotte Berk type stuff, which I definitely feel!

Mimi, I think your efforts sound pretty good considering that you have NO time whatsoever to workout (from the sound of it, anyway). Re: how much time/how far on the 10000 steps? I don't know because I haven't gotten even close yet! I've only racked up about 3,000 steps per day so far over the last two days. I have a desk job, so I'd have to get up (and not work) in order to get many more steps--but I'll try to take short breaks throughout the day and see how it goes. I'm already parking pretty far away from my office. I don't do much Pilates, but when I do, it depends on the workout. Sometimes I don't feel anything, sometimes I feel alot!! Have you tried the Karen Voight Pilates (or Pilates-style) workouts? I think those have gotten good reviews for effectiveness. I have them but haven't tried them in a long time--they were too challenging for me when I first got them, so I put them aside. One of them uses a Pilates ring--fun if you like using gadgets.

Looking forward to the weekend,
Donna

I've been at the office from about 8:00 am to 10:00 pm every day, so my problem is, first of all, wanting to work out at all! But even if I do want to work out, I can't do cardio because I live in an apartment and don't want to make noise really early or really late. So I'm trying to take a little lunch break every day and walk a little, and then do non-cardio stuff in the evenings. But without real cardio, it's really hard to keep from gaining weight.

Donna, your 10,000 steps sounds like a great goal. About how far/how much time is that?

I recently traded for a Mari Winsor pilates set on VF, and I've been trying those workouts at night this week. I must be doing something wrong, because I just don't get anything out of these DVD's, or any other pilates workouts I've tried! At least I don't think I'm getting anything out of it -- I don't work up a sweat or feel like I've worked out afterwards or feel sore the next day. I'm thinking of starting a thread at VF about it -- maybe I should have one private session with a pilates trainer to find out if I'm doing something wrong.

So there's my effort! Sad, huh?

-Mimi

Hi, Beth. I'm glad you showed up again. We've missed you.

Re: Back to basics, I've been wearing my pedometer for the last two days. Yesterday's step count was pretty abysmal--I've got a goal today to increase my steps by 2000. I guess my tally wouldn't haven been quite so low if I'd counted my evening workout--Walk Your Way Slim! Anyway, I'm trying to do more walking because I can't do much cardio due to my knee. Walking throughout the day and trying for those 10,000 steps seems to be the best alternative to that (I tried Leslie and can't handle her--not that there is anything wrong with her!). Then, I can focus my workout time on weights, yoga, and Pilates.

Anybody else have any workout efforts to share?

Hard to believe I started this post - I think I'm probably way off the wagon, but I've convinced myself this will be a maintenance week. At best. I'll be dining out at least twice, and my work day yesterday drained my energy so I bagged my P90X workout too.

Andrea - sorry you didn't get the go ahead for the bike just yet.

Mollie - I have a hard time with that whole doing too much too soon and going backward thing.

Isn't that sp food entry thing a pain!? I know I've said this before--I need to get back to a food journal. But IT'S SO HARD!!!! I have been keeping up with my exercise goals, though, so at least I'm doing that. But that was the easy part all along. Eating is my problem and that's why I wanted to try to this SparkPeople thing. So I'm here--now what? Urggh. I am reading the articles (at least those I have time for--I usually have to print them out and take them home to read and that doesn't always work because I'm tired, need to workout, or something always comes up). I now need to do what the articles tell me to do--re: eating balanced meals and snacks, writing things down, etc. Yeah, right!! HELP!

Donna

ETA: Glad your hip problem isn't as bad as it sounds--although I'm sure you don't want to go through that again. You sound like you have been pretty patient and caring with yourself. Good for you!

Oh gosh, I'm sorry to have scared you. I was being a little flip about my hip-bone. It's a break -technically- but it's a stress fracture not a fatigue fracture (the thing we usually think of as a broken bone). It's sort of a repetitive use thing. So, I can walk without crutches, although at first I considered them. I can do some gentle exercising. It's no big deal.

And let this be a lesson to all of us. Trying to keep up with crazy cycling boys in their 30s -not the best idea I ever had.

I didn't eat WELL yesterday. There was an encounter with a small ice cream cone, for example, but I did stay well within calorie-and-points range. I didn't dirnk all the water I was supposed to, but I did drink more than I had been drinking. And I charted my food and entered all my real numbers into the sparkpeople charts. That sucked. So... I think I'm back on the path -and as I say to people all the time, the path is the goal.

Andrea

Andrea, how awful! Somehow, when you were talking about it at VF it didn't seem quite so serious. At least you can still swim and do yoga.

I'm nearly over the vile sinus-y thing that I've had for nearly three weeks. But I've realized that getting over it completely means being careful, or I'll be taking two steps backward for every step forward. My fitness goal for the week, as stated in my journal is "Get well!"

Andrea: I guess I missed something somewhere--a broken hip! So sorry to hear that. OK, I'll stop feeling sorry for myself now. :-{ Geez, I didn't know. It's good to hear you are recovering, but I'm sure it's slower going than you'd prefer.

I was so darned hungry this morning, even though I'd eaten breakfast and had a planned snack. I just had to get something from the vending machine to tide me over until lunch time. I think mornings are my toughtest to deal with. I'm alway hungriest in the a.m., no matter what I eat for breakfast. It's so frustrating sometimes.

This is the week I said I'd pull myself together and get back on the diet wagon. So far, I've done well with the eating. It's Monday at noon. How bad could I have been already??? But sometimes I find a way. And I have my meals planned for the week, which always helps.

I just got back from the doctor re: my broken hip-bone, and the news isn't as good as I had hoped it would be. It's not terrible, but still not great. I have at least one more week of restrictions from exercise. He said I could walk, swim, do gentle yoga, and upper body weights. No lower body weight work just yet and no biking, running or step. I guess I'll work with that, but I fully intend to pout about it ;)

I think a weekend in NYC is a great way to kick off a new start in diet/exercise. There's so much walking involved, and the city is so energizing! I wish people walked like that here in LA!

I don't know if I've mentioned this on this site, but one morning, after an inspiring visit from some New York friends, I was walking to work, and a nice young woman actually pulled up next to me in her car and asked me if I needed a ride! She looked so concerned! I told her thank you, but I was just walking to work! People here look at you like you're crazy if you're just walking in the street -- unless, of course, you're decked out in workout gear!

I started with KickMax and at the first twinge switched over to Tie One On. Solid cardio but no fun factor at all.

Off to make a salad for lunch; chicken, corn, black beans, red peppers. I'm taking a vacation day today so it is a nice day to have a fresh start.

Donna, DD is 12 and has discovered the joy of shopping. We totally blew the budget for this weekend but it was fun to hang out with her.

TTFN!

Wow, Sharon. NYC! I had so much fun there on vacation once---about 20 years ago! I wish I could go again but the budget wouldn't allow such frivolities now. I hope the orthopedist does you some good. I tried doing a step workout the other day--Cathe's Body Fusion--but I didn't do all the moves on the step. Still it was kind of fun, and I felt really daring!! It's the rebel coming out in me, I guess.

I did so-so over the weekend. I ate well at least half of the time, and exercised both days.

My scale says I'm down two pounds, but that could change in a hurry so I'm going to wait before I adjust my ticker.

I hope everyone had a good weekend!

I've gained five pounds too, Sharon. And in a pretty short time -- about a week and a half. I can't believe it -- I was doing so well for so long!

Mine was due to a combination of job stress, long work hours and an unfortunate number of dinners and lunches eaten in restaurants.

I'm going to try to do better this week, too. No unrealistic goals, though -- I've got way too much stress with work as it is.

Hi everyone!

I fell off the wagon with a thud and managed to gain back the 5 lbs I lost. Work is pretty stressful and I'm having knee pain. Some of the gain is water weight due to the naproxen I'm taking (bum knee) but most of it is due to what I've been putting in my mouth.

I had a girls weekend in NYC with my Mom, Sis, DD. Lots of walking, subway stair climbing and eating was involved. I feel ready to get back with the program.

I'm going to make an appointment with an orthopedist -- I think I'll try a cortisone shot and at the very least get new meds. I've been having issues off/on for the past couple of years. I know some of the pain would be alleviated if I could get to a healthy weight but I can't seem to keep the momentum forward.

Anyway, I've made my first entry in my food log and my goal is to try and post every day this week to keep on track. Thanks for listening to me babble. :)

Donna -- I'm sorry to hear about your back issues. I hope that the pt provides you the relief you are looking for. I hear you with the step -- it is one of my favorite forms of exercise and I am pretty much limited to 30m a week if I'm lucky.

Mimi--I've had p.t. before for various injuries: hip, shoulder/neck, knee. It has been very helpful to me in the past, so I'm hoping it will be just the ticket now for my lower back. I haven't set up an appointment yet--I'll do it tomorrow.

While I can't say my job is totally stressing me out, it has been pretty busy here lately. I work at a university and our semester starts next week. When I get home from work, I feel so tired--all I want to do is eat and watch the rerun of the Daily Show & Colbert Report (from 7-8pm). And sometimes I fall asleep during those!

Needless to say, I don't feel like preparing a well-balanced meal in the evenings. I think I do OK during the day (if I've packed my lunch), but my evenings are a free-for-all when it comes to eating! I need to make better plans, I guess.

Thanks, Andrea, for your kind words and thoughts. I know I'm better of than most people in the world. I tend to feel sorry for myself way more often than I should.

I hope you can figure out what sp stage you are in, or want to be in! ;-D Did you say why it is that you can't exercise? I don't recall, but I hope it is short-lived so you can get back to things you love to do. That is one thing that bugs me about my knee (and now my back). I can't do whatever I want (like step workouts). BTW, I've decided to wait regarding making a decision about surgery on my knee. It's still functional--just talks to me if I get out of line and do something fun! However, my back must come first at this time.

Donna, I hope the PT and GP and the whole array of health-care stuff turns out to be exactly what you need. I'm crossing all my fingers and toes for you.

I, too, have been seriously off the wagon. I can't exercise very much -and I've been filling that extra time with eating. Because THAT makes sense (?????) So, it needs to stop. I almost thought of starting over at Stage 1 of SparkPeople. Will it even let you go backwards in stages, I wonder? Or... I could just pull myself together, for heaven's sakes!

Donna--How great that you'll be going to P.T. I love being able to DO something about a problem! (I've only been through it once, for a minor issue, but it was something I'd just been living with my whole life, and it felt great to know I didn't have to just "deal.") I have a friend with a chronic back problem who's currently going to a physical therapist who uses pilates methods. Wow, does she love it! She can't stop talking about it!

My eating has been out of control for the last few days. I haven't been like this for months and months. Very upsetting. It's probably due to increased pressure at work -- that wreaks havoc on both my emotions and my schedule! I'm going to try to force myself to take time tonight to make my favorite grain/veggie/tofu salad -- that can be my main sustenance for the next couple of days. That's always resulted in weight loss in the past!

Well, I haven't been to my g.p. yet, but I went to my orthopedist about my knee today (I MIGHT have surgery for the meniscus tear, but I'm thinking about it). Anyway, I asked him about the arthritis but he hasn't seen the x-rays so he just made some general comments and went ahead and prescribed p.t. for me. So--I don't have to wait until next week to get that done. But I don't know if I want to try a prescription medicine or not for the pain, so I haven't cancelled the appointment with the gp yet.

What does the arthritis mean to me? Well, I'm pretty uncomfortable most of the day because sitting is the hardest for me and that's how I have to do most of my work. OTC meds are only partially beneficial, but that might get better if I could get some p.t. to help out---along with how to apply heat/cold therapy, etc. I'm not exactly sure how to do that. I'd also like to find out about ergonomic chairs or something. Anything to help me feel better without drugs. I really don't want to be taking any kind of meds if I can do without. Too many things bother my stomach these days and I don't like how I feel when taking acetominophen (I feel drugged).

I'm still working out despite everything, though. This morning I did Firm Arms and Abs (Karen Voight) and the orthopedist said working the abs should help my back, so....there you go!!

My eating has been so-so. No major pigouts, but I don't always have perfectly balanced meals or snacks. I've got too much else to think about right now, I guess. I'll keep trying to watch portion sizes, though, and eat those veggies!

What's everybody else doing these days? I wish more peoople would be active on this site.

Take care everyone,
Donna

I hate that period in between the time you find out what you've got and the time you find out what it means and what you can do about it. It's really hard to focus on anything else.

I don't know anything about arthritis, but I bet the yoga workouts you're doing are just the thing for it.

Please keep us updated, Donna.

I don't know where I stand right now. Just trying to break even, I guess. As some of you know by now (I know Beth does) I was recently diagnosed with spinal arthritis (osteoarthritis, I guess). Anyway, that is why my back has been bothering me lately. I'm very discouraged and since I'm a mood eater--well, we'll see how it goes but I'm not making any promises. I'm pretty upset, you know--this wasn't in my plans! So I'll take it day by day this week and next week I have an appointment to see my doctor and see what my options are for dealing with the pain and holding off the damage.

On a lighter note: I did the 50-minute workout from Rodney Yee's YogaNow set on Saturday and my arms are still sore today from all the chaturangas in it. I think I'll have to do that workout a little more often!! I kind of like it, too--works for me, anyway.

So--I'm off work now. I'll try not to stop off somewhere to pick up chocolate or ice cream! ;-P

I'm in the "get back in the saddle" camp this week, too. I've been so busy I haven't been working out, watching my diet or logging anything. My weight went up a couple of pounds, and I'm just happy it didn't go up more!

I did do a lot of walking this weekend at least, and it felt great!

We have a new member? Excellent! Welcome :)

I'm trying very hard to get back on the bandwagon this week. One thing and another (many things and another) bumped me off the path over the last few weeks. I'm trying not to be discouraged about that, and I'm just getting back to work. Weirdly, my weight didn't go up (yet, but sometimes that seems to be a delayed thing with me), but still... I haven't been good about exercising, eating carefully, or tracking anything at ALL.

So, that's my challenge. Get back in the saddle. I'm off cardio/impact/yoga exercise for a little while, so I'm sticking with upper body weights workouts. But heaven knows THAT won't hurt anything!!!

Hi All - back from vacation. Had a great break, but really wish it could have been longer. I'm down a couple of pounds, or at least I was at the beginning of vacation. My hips also went down an inch. My P90X phase 2 starts up tonight.

I ate much more junk food at my inlaws than I had intended, but unfortunately, there's not a lot to choose from there. I faired better at my parents, but I'm really looking forward to getting back to a routine.

How's everyone else doing?

Beth

PS - I see my friend Cookie from VF has joined us too :-) Hi sweetie!
