I am still here! LOL I can only peek in from time to time though and never have time when I am at home. I miss when the place was hopping as well. If you decide to find a different team that is more active, let me know so I can tag-a-long! emoticon

I sure miss the ladies of this team. I was the fifth person to join this team and post regularly, and now, I seem to be the last. I miss the days of opening my email and seeing those messages from Sparkpeople informing me that someone had posted to this team. I used to hold out hope that everyone would trickle back in, but that hope has faded. It truly saddens me because all of those dear ladies were like family to me. Maybe there is no point in posting anymore. I seem to be all alone. emoticon emoticon Not sure where to go from here!

Things have been really rough for the past couple of months and in spite of my determination to eat right and lose weight, I did gradually put back on a few pounds. I have not been home enough to do anything more than sleep for over two months now so cooking healthy meals has been out and unfortunately for my weight, health, and sensitivity to wheat products fast food has been in, usually in the form of a fast, easy to eat on the go hamburger.

My mother has been moved to a skilled nursing facility near my home now and even though I still spend a great deal of time with her I am having to slow down some and make some time for myself. I am going to set some realistic goals for my current situation and do what I can to lose the 5 pounds I have regained and then keep losing. I know that I cannot maintain the pace I have been keeping indefinitely and at some point something is going to have to change in my life. All I can do is my best and I have to hope that it will be enough because I am making myself sick with the schedule I have been keeping lately.

Things have gone from bad to worse for my mother. A week after her heart attack she suffered a stroke (I blogged it). Yesterday was two weeks since this nightmare began. My mother has had a very difficult time and is not in very good shape. I really don't know if she is going to make it....I just keep going to the hospital and do what I can for her....and keep hoping for the best. :(

I have been MIA this week. My mother had a heart attack on Wednesday so I have not been online as much as I usually am. I will be back when she is better and life is back to normal.

Salads are a wonderful way to eat lower calorie but you have to be really careful with the dressing and other toppings. I love bacon bits (homemade of course) on my salads but I don't think the flavor is enough for the calorie cost, so I leave them off. I have never been big on fruit on a garden salad. I know a lot of people that love it though and fruit is something I am limiting, so I just eat it separately.

I am doing really well with my eating. I did treat myself to a bowl of ice cream this evening but I am avoiding the wheat and being very successful. As for the bread temptation....I just stay away from that part of the grocery store! lol I am really not having too many cravings right now and when I do I have been able to resist so far.

I think I may go to Sam's Club and buy their huge container of Spring Mix salad. I love the darker varieties of greens in it and they have a much better price than the smaller bagged versions. I love all of the veggies you mentioned for my salad. You can't beat a good bulky salad. I like adding fruit like strawberries or mandarin oranges to it too. I like vinaigrette type dressing for my salad. Then I can toss some lean meat in there and should be good to go. I just need to make sure I don't go too crazy with the toppings especially if I am adding feta... because I can unintentionally pile on the calories very easily.

That sounds great Debbie!
My success at the store revolves around only getting 3 things over the list of 3 things.
I went for milk, dishwashing detergent, and decaf tea. Unfortuantely you have to pass through the deli/bakery to get in the store and I saw some apple datenut bread. I grabbed it but went around the display to check the price...saw it was $5 so I put that back. LOL Unfortunaltey I then spied the fresh baked rye bread(just $2.99) . Having only had a South Beach meal bar by that time ... I started craving. I knew I already had some sauerkraut in the fridge so I ended up stopping at the deli for some sliced corned beef and baby swiss. Haven't made the Reuben yet, though. I didn't have any thousand Island dressing. LOL

I did forgo having Pizza yesterday. Zachary wanted to buy Pizza Hut pizza. I only ordered the one kind he wanted(meat lovers, which I don't like... usually I also get a veggie lovers) So I had some leftover spaghetti in the fridge for a late lunch and ended the day having had only 2 South Beach meal Bars, a bowl of spaghetti and 7 wintergreen lifesavers.

On a sad note.. my chia seeds never made it to my door. Apparently the packaging failed in transit and they sent it back and credited my account. So I had to reorder and won't receive the new order until next Thurs or Friday.

I completely forgot to post what I came here to say. lol I went to the grocery store today and bought salad greens along with other fresh produce. I will be eating more salads....especially for lunch each day. I have ham in the freezer and will be baking one to eat for breakfasts next week, along with boiled eggs....something I can put in baggies and grab on my way out the door in the mornings. I also have chicken breasts to cook and chop to go on my salads for lunch....so I am all set for next week.

I also have fish in the freezer and will be baking it with olive oil, tarragon, and dill weed and have salads and rice on the side. I also have broccoli spears, cauliflower, and carrots in the freezer, as well as canned green beans. I will limit the rice, potatoes, corn, and peas since they are starchy.

I feel like I am physically and mentally ready for this. I intend to eat "clean" most of the time. I do use bottled salad dressings, in moderation, but am thinking about experimenting with making my own. In fact, I have already made a garden salad with Iceberg lettuce, Romaine hearts, baby greens, red cabbage, and carrots. I have also sliced cucumbers, red onions, mushrooms, black olives, and radishes to go along with my salad. Yum!

Lisa, I started having hot flashes and night sweats in my mid 30's. I am also going through the change, but am toward the end of it. I rarely have that time of month...just every 3 to 5 months now and the last two were almost nonexistent. I also throw the covers on and off throughout the night. It really sucks.

Like your friend, I believe that high fructose corn syrup is evil. People just gain weight differently than they used to and there has been a drastic increase in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, etc. What is different now than when our parents and grandparents were growing up? The type of wheat we eat. What else is different just since we were growing up? High fructose corn syrup! Not only did they stop using granulated sugar in sodas (which actually tastes better) but they started loading other foods with high fructose corn syrup AND wheat. The food industry has this figured out....they know that both are addictive and will cause people to crave foods containing them. I remember, as a kid, sodas were a treat....not an every day thing....but I do not remember EVER craving them. Today, people drink them like they are water and they don't even taste as good as the sodas we had growing up. It is more than just wanting the good flavor....I really believe it is an addiction and the difference between today's sodas and the ones we grew up on is high fructose corn syrup.

I truly believe that eating fresh./frozen fruits and vegetables along with fresh beef, pork, fish, and poultry.....in other words, eating "clean" ... is the solution to the obesity and diabetes rates! I hope we have enough rain in the spring to put in a garden this year....I know that home grown veggies are healthier.

I read an article online a while back that said people in desk jobs were at higher risk for blood clot, stroke, and heart disease because they sit all the time and in that article it was suggested that just getting up and moving around for a few minutes once every hour will greatly reduce your risk. I for one sit entirely too much, but with my job I am up out of my seat at least once every hour and usually more....though I do get to sit most of the time.

I can't wait to lose the achy joints! The nursing instructor I work with that eats gluten free is also certain that high fructose corn syrup is another diet evil. She also printed out an article yesterday for us all about a study showing that we must move throughout the day if we have a sit down job of 5 hours or more, or risk an earlier death than those who only sit at their job for 3 hours. I haven't had time to read it myself, but she said getting up every hour would be beneficial.

Did I mention I think I am going through the change? I have been having heat flushes with the slightest bit of exertion. I throw the covers off and on all night from being too hot to then getting chilly. It is crazy! Just walking to the car (maybe 10 steps)this morning in 27 degrees with my sweater coat and I had to take it off and throw it in the back seat. 7 minutes later whent the car had still not started blowing warm air.... I was cold but couldn't reach my coat. LOL

I hope the wheat free works for you as well as it has for me. Even if I didn't lose weight just by cutting wheat....and I do....I just feel so much better....it is like I am a different person. Those cravings for wheat loaded foods go away very quickly, so just hang in there when you start the diet. It takes about a week, maybe a little less for the cravings to diminish. I think you will find that it helps your achy joints. Good luck.

Debbie, If i had not bought some South Beach and Slim fast meal bars and shake mix right before New Years, I would be going wheat free this week as a new start. I am totally impressed with reading the Wheat Belly information. I plan to give it the ole college try as soon as my expensive diet foods are gone which will be in less than 7 days.

Happy New Year to you too!

I have been sick all day today. Everyone around here has been passing this around for the past couple of weeks and it finally caught up with me. I have done pretty good with my eating though. Day 3 and I am still going strong with my commitment. I even resisted the mac & cheese made with velveeta yesterday....I didn't have any of it at all. :)

Off to log my food for the day.

OMG....I forgot how full you feel when you don't eat a lot of foods with gluten. I had a chicken breast cooked in olive oil, 5 or 6 broccoli spears with cheese sauce, and 1/2 cup corn for dinner and I feel so full I am miserable. Gotta cut back on portions! emoticon

The more I study about it and based on my own experience, I have come to the conclusion that wheat is the main evil in today's obesity rate. I think high fructose corn syrup plays a major role as well, but I think that modern wheat is the larger culprit!

Dr. William Davis, a Milwaukee cartiologist has written a book called "Wheat Belly" that I am going to buy. He claims that modern wheat is not the same kind eaten by our pioneer ancestors, but is a newfangled variety that produces super-size crops that create super-sized waistlines. He says that studies at multiple universities show that modern wheat raises blood sugar more than granulated sugar does! (One thing I noticed early after my diabetes diagnosis was that one dinner roll would make my bloos sugar soar...it would raise it more than a slice of cheesecake and I know several diabetics that have told me they don't eat bread at all because of it making their blood sugar soar, so I believe this one.) Since high blood sugar leads to weight gain, eating wheat causes people to be fat. He also says that modern wheat is mostly made up of a type of carbohydrate not found in other foods....he calls it a supercarbohydrate. He also says that if you feel addicted to bread and pasta you are not crazy...you are addicted because research shows that wheat has a morphine-like effect on your body to want more and more. He says that cutting wheat from your diet will cause people to consume up to 418 fewer calories a day without trying. He also says that whether you have an allergy to wheat or not, wheat is an appetite stimulant. "Remove the wheat and appetite naturally diminishes." (I know this is true from personal experience.) He estimates that cutting wheat will work for over 75% of people with a weight problem. "Experiment and see how your body responds. You'll feel better right away. And you can get all the nutrients you need without wheat. You really have nothingn to lose -- except your pasta belly, biscuit hips, waffle thighs and bagel butt!"

This doctor lost weight by cutting wheat from his diet! He also says that cutting wheat could relieve (I read some of this online a while back) arthritis, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, acne, acid reflux, and IBS! (When I completely eliminated wheat from my diet, my joints stopped aching, I lost weight, and I didn't have to take any meds for acid reflux or IBS (I was on meds for 15 years and now only have problems when I eat wheat products....when I avoid wheat I have no symptoms at all!).

On his diet plan you can have unlimited nonstarchy vegetables and lean protein because, "without the apetite stimulating effect of wheat, you are very unlikely to overeat these nutritious and filling foods." You can also have two servings of wheat-free rice and potatoes a day and two servings of fruit. Also, lots of good fats are allowed....raw nuts and you can drizzle veggies with olive oil. He also encourages drinking lots of water.

I am so down for this! Women that have tried this diet have reported losing as much as 11 pounds in one week without feeling hungry. This just reinforces the idea that we should eliminate processes foods from our diets and eat "clean" because most packaged foods have wheat hidden in them....even processed meats, chewing gum, and packaged seasonings/sauces.

When I was in college I had a professor for Child Growth and Development that obviously had plenty of money. One day she was going over a chapter in the text and it stated that poor people had more health issues and were more likely to be obese because they didn't eat as well as wealthier people. This professor actually said, "I have a problem with this. I don't think it has anything to do with cost it has to do with poor choices. When I need something I go to the store and buy it but I make good choices and buy healthy foods to eat." She obviously not only had money but grew up in a wealthy family and never had to worry about where the money would come from to meet her basic needs. It really does cost more to eat right! She was the ONLY person in that classroom that could not understand that it costs more to eat the right kinds of foods. She was a true snob! lol

Maybe we should try taking some fiber capsules....they claim that fiber helps you feel full longer. It can't hurt! Also, when you eat a meal, experts say to wait a full 20 minutes after eating to get seconds. It takes about 30 minutes total for your brain to be signaled that your belly is full, so after you finish eating if you are still hungry 20 minutes later then get a "little" more. I know this works for me, if I will do it. Eating slower also helps you eat less....they say we should savor our food by eating it slowly and enjoy the taste to feel full and satisfied.

I wonder if fiber pills fill you up. I really need to just decrease portion sizes and getting used to eating smaller amounts. But I seem to keep going until I have that full feeling.

Fruit has gotten so expensive and veggies too. It is no wonder that wealthier people are healthier and poor people are fatter. Cheap food is bad for you but it is affordable. Doesn't make sense. I wish things cost money according to it's calorie value. Then I could afford all the salads and veggies and could not afford the fast and easy unhealthy stuff.

Lisa, I have found that when I am busy and don't snack between meals I can eat pretty much anything (in moderation) and still lose weight. Of course, it is healthier to eat fresh fruits and veggies and those are both almost always missing in fast food. It is so hard when we have to work though. Like today, I didn't know if there would be a microwave handy so I needed something I could eat cold. Cold doesn't offer many options. I made a Tuna Pasta Salad to bring with me and that is what I had for lunch. Some days though, I will have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a small apple for a snack, and a small apple for lunch and then won't eat again until dinner. On those days I almost always see a loss on the scale. One would think I would learn a lesson from that.

It definitely gives you motivation!
I agree that it doesn't make sense to go against everything they tell us about losing weight and yet the easiest losses for me are from not eating from being under the weather. UNfortunately I am not sick right now so it is hard... in fact I am extra exhausted ...which makes me want to just sit and eat.

I finally discovered the secret to losing weight....it really works. All you have to do is NOT EAT! lol I didn't eat anything yesterday until about 8 last night and I had a McRib from McDonalds (I know, not good) but from my morning weigh-in to 9 last night I lost a pound....literally! This morning the scale was down 2 pounds....TWO POUNDS IN ONE DAY!!!! I know that isn't good...especially on a long-term basis....but isn't two pounds awesome?

Today I had a large apple for breakfast and a large apple for lunch.....I will have something for dinner tonight......it would be awesome to see another two pounds tomorrow! :) Seeing the scale go down the past couple of weeks is so motivating!

The past few days have been very stressful. I had a hard time finding a party dress for my daughter and spent 4 days shopping after work. We finally bought a dress on Friday and when we got home we got a phone call that my Aunt Alma had just died. Saturday morning we found out that Alma's husband, Huston, had been hospitalized and he refused to go on a ventilator because of his breathing issues. I had to go finish shopping for accessories for Brittany's costume Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning Huston was moved to Hospice and we had Alma's funeral in the afternoon. I spent the evening at the hospital with Huston. The doctor says he could go any time. He has had health problems for a while now and I really think that after he lost Alma he just didn't want to go on anymore and is ready to go. In less than two weeks I have lost a second cousin in a horrible car crash, an Aunt, and will be losing an uncle and attending yet another funeral in the next few days.

I stepped on the scale a few minutes ago......I usually weigh in the mornings before I eat or drink anything and in a t-shirt and underwear....but it still showed a 1 pound loss...and I had the added weight of a pair of shorts. I have been so stressed that I forgot to weigh myself this morning so I will do my official weigh in tomorrow morning so that I can get a more accurate official weigh in.

I have done nothing but go, go, go for the past few days and don't feel like I have had any time off....maybe next weekend I can get some rest.

I almost forgot....I have only lost about 10 to 12 pounds since I last saw my mother-in-law and at the funeral she asked me if I have lost some weight. I was really surprised that it shows because I am so large to begin with....I guess it does though because she asked me about it...it felt really good that she noticed.

I am glad that you are liking the job better these days. It is so much easier to get up and go to work when you like your job and the people you work with! I don't make much money doing what I do, but I love my job, I work with some great people, and most of the kids are great as well. I guess I fear change a little because you never know what you might be getting into with a new job. I may have to find something else soon though....I am just not getting to work every day like I used to.

Hey Tani,

Good to hear from you again! SOunds like you have a lot of interesting things going on! Are you still doing your dressage?

Debbie I know what you mean. All of theses formulas and books about diet.... I have my information, I know what works, I just don't do it. The women I work with are determined to help me get healthy. That has made it so much easier to try! We have walked this week and they are into healthy eating, and like us they know a lot about nutrition. I think I may stand a chance now that I have a good support group that I am with 5 days a week.

Hi Tani! Welcome back. It is never too late to restart this journey. I have lost track of how many times I have done just that.

I too have my addiction....for me it is my laptop....online and offline. I am very attached to the thing and to be honest it keeps me from being as active as I should be. I have no one to blame but myself. I like Facebook and some of the games entirely too much.

I am still working as a substitute teacher and I am still fighting the battle of the bulge! I suppose the important thing is that I haven't given up yet so the fight continues. I seem to pingpong between two numbers on the scale....and have done so for 2 years now. I lose a few pounds and gain them back. From my largest weight loss I gained over 40 pounds back and have been stuck ever since. I won't give up though and am currently trying hard to get back on track and stay there. I lost two pounds last week and so far another pound for this week.

It is good to have you back Tani!

Its been a very long long long time ....I want to stay accountable here at Sparkpeople...revitalize the verve in my groups...make some progress in the weightloss journey and re get to know you! I wonder what happened over the year.....

For me...I have a neopets addiction..I am on the 11th chapter of my fictional book about a young woman finishing up university and dealing with her disfunctional family...its a fairly common story but she learns plenty of spiritual lessons along the way and in the end there will be balance in her life..

I am also now part time at the languages school which I have been working at the last 4 years...I am collecting students from all over and hope to open my own center within 6 to 8 months.

My daughter has been working on her Masters in Neuroscience in Germany and my son is attending Uni in the Business Admin Dept...

Well I look forward to hearing from you actives....take care..tanibear

Hey Lisa. I am doing good!

Most diets have some good ideas but the reality is that most just don't work. I have a friend on a diet right now....can't remember what it is called....but it is basically a low carb diet but they can have soy milk and some cereals. The thing is that they are not supposed to eat any foods with sugars or artificial sweeteners in them and they have a long list of foods that are sugar-free and acceptable for them to eat (ironically I have read some of the labels of some of the approved foods and they DO contain some form of sweetener). The problem is that it is difficult to eat that way since so many foods contain some form of sugar or artificial sweeteners. He was telling me that he can't eat bacon because it has sugar in it....I showed him a package of bacon and it did not have sugar in the ingredients list and it had 0 carbs....but he insisted it has sugar in it since the diet plan says that all bacon has sugar in it. He is failing miserably on this plan. He lost about 80 pounds on his own before starting this plan and hasn't lost any more. I can tell him how to do it....I know how....but he won't listen to me and why should he.....I am not following my own advice! lol

I truly believe that the key is to keep moving....whether you "exercise" or not...just keep moving, drink lots of water, closely watch portions, eat clean foods (no packaged/processed foods), avoid sugary drinks, keep it low or lower carb with adequate protein, and occasionally (once day every week or two) allow yourself to eat anything you want so that you have that to look forward to and the weight will take care of itself....we just have to have the willpower to do it.

Today for lunch I had leftover taco meat with lettuce, a little cheese, and half a whole wheat pita pocket with a bottle of water. It filled me up, I felt satisfied and it was 345 calories. So far, my total for the day is 523 calories but I don't feel hungry at all. Of course, I can't eat pita pockets every day because I am gluten sensitive and have to really restrict foods that have gluten in them. Portion control can be difficult but it really is a huge part of succeeding.

I didn't lose any more weight before the Fourth. I really feel like I have let myself down. It seems to me that it should be just as easy to eat the right foods as it is to eat the wrong foods. But is just isn't. No matter how good my intentions are, it is just too easy to get off track. My ONLY consolation is that I did not gain any weight either. I am just not willing to accept this. I have to lose this weight so that I will feel better. So, yet again, I am going to lay out a plan for myself and try to start over. My new goals will be for Labor Day.

I am off to a decent start. I did strengthening exercises yesterday and went to the park and walked a mile. My approach this time is going to be a little different than what I have done in the past. I am off to work on that and get it posted in a new thread.

Just posted a minor bit in the other thread about DASH. You can go to their website and print off their work sheets which pretty much could be used as an outline for the program without the book. The plan offers limits for several calorie ranges. Mine will be 1200, my son's will be 2000.

I am riding that angry train right along with you. I get so aggravated by that crap and had to deal with similar yaps from in-laws as well. The only thing is I know of men who work and have stay at home wives and they still chip in for family sake so the attitude we were given is just that. People will use that as an excuse to excuse away the lazy behavior of their sons.

It sounds like you are super busy these days. I fully understand that. David should help you around the house; it won't hurt him a bit. You know, I get so sick of people thinking that a woman should do all the house work and the man shouldn't have to do any...after all, it is the man who is the breadwinner of the home. CRAP!!! For years I got lectures from Darrel's family about the duties of a wife! Basically, according to them, a man's duty is to go out, work, and make the living and it is a wife's duty to submit to him when he wants, cook, clean the house, have babies, take care of the kids,etc....even if she has a full-time job! They even back this up with the Bible...it defines the duties of a man and wife. Well, I have read the Bible too and it does say that a wife is responsible for giving a man children, taking care of the home, cooking, etc...but it also says that it is the man's responsibility to provide a living for the family. It seems to me that if one wants to quote the Bible they should include the man's responsibility and it also seems to me that the men in Darrel's family are NOT fulfilling their part of God's standards for family life since 99% of the women in his family now have jobs outside the home. Of course, they don't see it that way! Geez. Ok...sorry about the venting. I just get so irritated with men! LOL (Can you tell I have already had a good dose of "man" today?)

Have a wonderful Mother's Day Lisa. I am glad to hear that work is getting better for you.

Sorry I have seemed missing in action. I am so pushed for time these days, I have to sneak on the computer when everyone is sleeping.

I am getting used to my new job. Doing lots of interesting things but still struggling to complete tasks at home which I had always been responsible for...I let dishes stack up in the sink a few days last week just to see if anybody else would eventually do anything about it and after 3 days, David finally decided to do them. I outright refuse to continue to carry the old load I had with working this new full time job.

Four days a week I leave before David and get home after him and am still the only person who will cook. Fridays I get off earlier depending on how many of my 40 hours are left, but I refuse to do extra that day, just because it is still a 40 hour week.

As soon as I get home Zachary is ready to eat and waiting to spend time with me. Weekends I try to stuff in the laundry and do some extra cooking on Sunday so I don't have to do so much during the week. I am usually ready to plop down on the couch and not move. One day I was so tired, I just sat on the couch and my supper was a can of ravioli, eaten out of the can. LMAO

Anyway, I hope you have a Happy Mother's Day!

Lisa, I too am a visual learner. I found a program online that teaches you word, excel, powerpoint, etc. for free...they send you emails and you complete exercises online. It is supposed to cover everything that can be done in those programs. I need to make myself do the lessons....I am sure there are employers that will let you test on those programs even if you don't have formal training in them. They really should require it of all degrees since computers are an integral part of most any job these days....especially jobs that require a college degree.

Good luck on your new job...I hope it works out for you.

It is a full time job, for which I was in desperate need. It might not be a bad thing for you to take a class for those Apps, Debbie.

Our college requires SCT100 for all students, which is the use of Word, Excel, Power Point and Access. Just that one class will give you what you need there and it is not terribly expensive to take just one class at a technical or community college.

I learned what I know from assisting students in the computer lab for that very class. I had to learn it on my own, but I am wishing I had taken the class. Before Fall Quarter in 2011, I could/can qualify for the Hope Grant (lottery funded program) but shortfalls, have required cuts and now even the Grant will not be allowed if you already have a bachelor's degree. It is too late to get enrolled for it for me though, Spring Qtr is almost under way and there will be a really short qtr this summer as Technical schools transition for Quarters to Semesters.

I should have taken some things when I could have gotten the grant and had time being only part time. No one could have foreseen the changes with the hope though and I have learned much on my own. You should check out some visual learning books. I checked out a visual learning microsoft apps book in our library before that test for the interview and studied it.

I was surprised at what I already knew and equally surprised that I MUST be a visual learner. The other book I checked out was more difficult to decipher-it was not a visual learning..

I have the bachelor's degree, but no experience and can use Microsoft Word, but am still learning and have no clue about Excel or Power Point. I really need to do something full-time so I can get insurance and make better money, but I really don't want to teach full-time. I am glad that you found something...is it full-time?

I believe the fact that I already worked in a Technical college that had a similar program helped. I am familiar with the requirements, testing and such that goes with it. I had to take a Microsoft Word and Excel test right before the interview. They preferred a Bachelor's degree and experience in higher education setting was a minimum requirement with office type experience also necessary.

Pollen is kicking my cahoouey, too!

I have good news! Finally! I interviewed for 2 jobs this week. One on Tuesday(the one I really wanted) and one yesterday after work(I would have taken that one if it was offered).

This morning I got an offer for the one I wanted and an hour later some of my references called me to tell me the other one was calling them after my interview yesterday. It looks like my dry spell left in a big way and I am so thankful my preferred one contacted me first. It will be at another technical college (I will be assisting with the Associate Degree Nursing program) and the other one was a university. I know the university(a registrar's office job) has more prestige but the tech college paid more, better benefits and 40 less miles of commute. I start April 4th, so I have one more week here in the library and then I start there!

I have had a constant headache since I got home! I am ready to feel better.

I did walk for a few minutes on the treadmill yesterday...only 6 minutes, but better than nothing!

I need to lose 26 pounds in the next 4 weeks to meet my weight loss goal for Easter! That is over 6 pounds a week....I just don't see it happening unless I totally starve myself! :( I am beginning to think that is what it will take to lose this weight.

I am sure it will be. I made it to Lafayette at 8 this evening after my seat breaking and having to go back and get it fixed, leaving again, getting caught in 2 traffic jams in Dallas for an hour...two 3 car accidents, a 2 car accident, then rain and fog the last 55 miles of the trip. I have been going since 6 this morning and am exhausted. I think I will go unload the truck and go to bed.

I have been a little MIA as well. I was sick all last week and finally got an antibiotic...sinus infection and bronchitis. I am doing better but still congested and coughing some. I have not weighed or really worried about my calories...I am sure I haven't lost any more with the inactivity, orange juice, chicken noodle soup, etc. I am going to Louisiana tomorrow and always lose weight while I am there....I am convinced it is largely due to the fact that I stay upstairs while I am there and am up and down a LOT! No doubt my bad knee will be swollen and painful by the end of the week, but I will survive.

I did not know your mom was having surgery on her spine. I hope she has a speedy recovery. I know how exhausting it all is for you. My mother almost died 7 years ago and at the time I commuted an hour and ten minutes (each way) to a full-time job, had a small child to take care of, and she needed someone at the hospital with her, so I was at the hospital when I wasn't at work or sleeping...and sometimes slept up there. I was so worn out and run down by the time she was out of critical condition. Just hang in there...it will get better.

Finally looked at my cinnamon today. LOL

I have 1000mg capsules that also contain chromium(amino acid). It was all I could find at Walmart when I bought them. The bottle suggests 2 capsules once or twice a day.
2 capsules would equal the daily dosage you suggested so I will probably do 1 at Lunch and 1 at Supper.

I took my first one a few minutes ago.

I have been mia for a bit since my mom had her spinal surgery. Been trying to stay with her as much as possible while also working and making sure my own family is taken care of...it has been very exhausting.

I actually bought some cinnamon last week, haven't started it yet because it has been at my house and I have only been here off and on and ultra busy with laundry and cooking squeezed in.

Hope you are well!

Lisa, when it comes to jeans fit and length are everything. An ill-fitting pair of jeans is one of the most uncomfortable things in the world....a good fitting pair of jeans is an awesome feeling!

The article I read said to take 500 mg capsules of cinnamon...1 at breakfast, 2 at lunch, and 1 at dinner...they must be taken with food or can cause some to feel queasy....Darrel is taking them along with me and his indigestion has gone away! The Cinnamon I bought is NOW Cinnamon Bark 600 mg (that was all I could find at the Drug Emporium here) and I have been taking them as above....It is just ground cinnamon bark, so I don't see how it can hurt....4 pills is 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon...you can use the cinnamon in your pantry, but I don't care for cinnamon unless mixed with sugar, so the capsules are easier and fewer calories. This bottle cost me $18.16 and has 240 capsules in it...that is a 2 month supply for 1 person. On this bottle it says to take 2 capsules twice daily...that is how Darrel is taking them...either way, 4 capsules a day with food.

Hmm! Maybe it is the cinnamon, Debbie! Makes me want t go get some supplements and try them!

How are you dosing again? Congrats on the 3 pounds gone that is awesome!

I don't like the stretchy give in a waistband unless the pair over all has the extra give. Those capris give too much in the waist and very little in the leg which is why they bug the pooh out of me. My jeans in storage have a regular waist with a zipper and no elastic. I like the look of jeans and if they are not stiff... the feel.... as long as they aren't choking the chicken legs that i have. I would wear them daily if they fit well. I am a little out of sorts when I am the only person not wearing jeans on dress down or casual work days.

In the end it really does come down to the fit.. and the length for me.

I stepped on my scale this morning thinking I would see no loss...and possibly a gain...but hoping for that pound I have consistently been losing each week. While a pound is a little disappointing, I would have been very happy with it this week as my eating was not the greatest over the weekend. To my surprise the scale is showing a 3 pound loss for this past week. I couldn't believe it...I got off the scale and back on to make sure that it wasn't a glitch but it held steady....I lost 3 pounds!

Now for the big question! Is it just a coincidence, or are the cinnamon supplements helping correct metabolic problems that were contributing to me having trouble losing weight? I honestly don't know if it is the cinnamon....what I do know is that the only major change in my diet in the past week is that I started taking the cinnamon supplements....and this past weekend my eating was actually worse than usual. I honestly don't know, but if I continue to lose more weight consistently I am going to find it hard to believe it is just a coincidence.

I have never understood how anyone can stand to wear elastic waist jeans...even the stretch denim...I just think they are uncomfortable. I wear jeans with a waistband, button, and zipper. I absolutely love blue jeans. I guess everyone has their likes and dislikes....that is why there is so much variety in clothing. :) I do have some shorts that are knit and have an elastic waist....now that is comfort.

I do have some jeans capris that have the stretch lycra, and I avoid them unless there is no other choice. They get too big in the waist and too small around my thighs making them want to stay creeping down. They will give so I can yank them up but then they start moving their way down my legs again. Any clothing that must be yanked is to be avoided. LOL

Lisa, I find jeans comfortable...the ones I am wearing right not are not stretch denim, but they do stretch some. The jeans with lycra are very comfortable...they actually have a lot of stretch to them. But I am with you on the comfort thing!

I have some jeans I wore when I was around 313. I think they were 26's but I have them stored up. When I get closer to that range I will pull them out and start trying them on to give me an idea where I am at but I doubt I will wear them even if they fit.

I didn't like wearing clothes that don't give any. I can't even wear woven style pj's. I have moved into a 'stretchy only' wardrobe. I know people say to avoid stretchy for the very reason that discomfort is a motivation, however discomfort never gave me the boost I needed in that way.

That probably comes from a childhood of being the tallest child around (in 3rd grade I was taller than the 6th graders) and always having ill-fitting clothes and a lifetime of discomfort.

I would not be able to concentrate if I were uncomfortable in pants or even shoes. I did that in my 20's for work and I can't believe how willing to be miserable I was for fashion's sake. It is a problem I have always had, I can only dwell on the misery and pain until I can rip it off. Ill-fitting bras are another bane to my existence. I would trade my melons for a flat chest anyday and that was even when they were (much smaller than now) D's..

I am glad you are back in some better jeans. I know that works well for you!

They even have jeans with some lycra in them in the big girl catalogs like Woman Within or Roamans but I will pass for now. LOL

I for one hope that it helps...I don't see how it can hurt. I don't expect miracles, but it would be nice if it helped out some...I will take anything.

One would think they would have a crossing fingers emoticon....I guess they figure weight loss has nothing to do with luck though. LOL

My jeans that were fitting good (they would be too big now anyway) were so worn out that I had to stop wearing them...that left me with one pair that were so snug they were not comfortable, but I am stubborn and still refuse to buy new jeans. Well, my uncomfortable jeans are now fitting nicely. A few more pounds and I should be able to fit nicely into my goal jeans and these should be too loose. I will be so happy to be down another 30 pounds...I will have tons of clothes when that happens. emoticon

Let me know how it goes with your blood sugar. I don't have that issue yet, but I could do the cinnamon thing for the other benefits. Crossing fingers!

Over the past two or three years I have read about the health benefits of eating cinnamon and have often wondered if it works. I finally read an article that inspired me to give it a try. It is cinnamon after all...what can it hurt? If it does what the article says it will do, then I have everything to gain...errrrr...lose! LOL

Research suggests that cinnamon will not only lower your blood sugar, but it will lower blood pressure and promote weight loss...especially in the belly area. Researchers believe that the way it works is that it lowers your blood sugar...by as much as 29%, which will cause you to produce less insulin, and less insulin means less fat storage, especially in the belly area. According to the article I read, women tried taking cinnamon supplements....they are nothing but capsules with 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon in each....1 with breakfast, 2 with lunch and 1 with dinner...and they were given meal plans (which the majority didn't even bother to follow) and they lost weight....just by taking the supplement. So, I figure I don't have anything to lose...other than a few dollars and they are pretty inexpensive...a few pounds, and numbers on the blood pressure cuff/glucose monitor. I bought 240 cinnamon capsules and it cost me $18....that is a 2 month supply, so it costs about $9 a month....I really didn't think that was too much to shell out to see if they work. Keep your fingers crossed. I am hoping to see a drop in my blood sugar, blood pressure, and a loss on the scale as well. However, I intend to keep walking and eating right as well. If the pounds start to literally melt off I will be letting you know. Keep your fingers crossed for me. emoticon

It's ok Lisa...don't feel guilty. Everyone does that kind of thing from time to time and it is hard to resist half price goodies like that...especially when you feel let down by loved ones on a holiday. I think that what you did is pretty normal. Just let yourself enjoy the treats today, don't lay a guilt trip on yourself, and start fresh tomorrow or the next day. It will be ok.

Because hubby and son did not give me a passing thought for valentine's day I went a little nuts with half priced stuff today at the store. I will have to say my day off was a day off from sanity. LOL I don't even like suckers... and Easter jelly beans???? don't like them why did I buy them? weren't half priced...

My life could fuel a really good Psych dissertation.

Your day off sounds much deserved and I am glad you enjoyed it. I am currently wracked with guilt from my little buying binge... i had 3 jolly rancher suckers(only 45 calories each..not too very bad) and then I got into the reese's pieces easter eggs. I really need to stay away from Walmart.. went there for girl products and came away with guilt products as well.

Oh well. Tomorrow is another day!

Today was the final day of the Valentine's Day goals. I was successful on some of my goals, but unsuccessful on others. I only lost 6 pounds of my 12 pound goal, but I am okay with that...at least I lost some so that is progress. Even though I haven't stuck with my goals like I should have, I did make some progress and have looked forward to eating anything I want today. So, even though I didn't totally pig out, I ate what I wanted, when I wanted it. I had chicken fried rice for breakfast, lunch, and one snack (LOVE chicken fried rice!), and then for dinner had a huge steak (that I couldn't finish), a large baked potato slathered with butter (so bad), and broccoli with cheese sauce. I also had an orange for a snack and a 16.9-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew. Oh, how I enjoyed my day off.

Hey Maggie! Just peeked in this thread and saw it was active...what is up with Spark and notifications... DUH!

We are not giving up either!

Debbie, the price of veggies is just plain crazy! You made a good point in the ohter thread about fresh should be cheaper due to less processing.. and the onion thing is crazy, too. just crazy!

I have lost a few pounds over the past few days. Finally under the speed limit of my scale again.

Today all I have had is a salad.. but it was a huge one... I call it a crazy salad (apparently crazy is my catchword of the day). My crazy salad consisted of:
Half of a bag- Italian blend salad(marked down but still looked very fresh!) very crunchy blend!
2 boiled eggs
about 2 ounces deli ham
about 1/2 cup wasabi peas
1/3 of a cucumber
1/4 c white onions
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1 cup mandarin orange sergments
1/4 cup shredded cheddar
1/4 cup croutons
raspberry vinagrette (light)

It was delicious! The only thing I might change would be to substitute feta cheese for the cheddar and to add some tomatoes..beets, garbanzos ....well okay I like a tangy sour sweet hot salad. LOL

I bought some onion plants last week only to have it turn cold...too cold to be out working in a garden last weekend. So far it has been nice this week and if the forecast doesn't change it is supposed to be nice this weekend....69 to 70 F. Friday and Saturday. I am going to try to plant onions in my flower beds and hopefully get two spots in my backyard tilled for a small garden at the house and then put space hogging veggies out on the land. I intend to plant a LOT of red onions....I bought a red onion a few days ago and they were $1.76 a pound...ridiculous when you consider that red onions are grown exactly the same way as white or yellow, the plants, seeds, bulbs cost exactly the same, and they are just as easy to grow. So why are they almost twice as much at the grocery store?

Anyway, I plan to get some exercise in with gardening this weekend!

Remember when I used to walk 4 miles a day on the treadmill at a 5% incline? Well I did not get my treadmill moved into the house 2 weeks ago or a week ago....I FINALLY got Darrel to move it in last night....and he lost the screws to put the handles on it....but I went for a walk on it anyway...just used the mantle for something to balance with. I only walked for 5 minutes, 30 minute mile on a 5% incline and I swear I am breathing harder than that 4 miles at the same settings made me feel 4 years ago. I know...I have to walk regularly and build my stamina up. One thing is for sure...I am SO out of shape that with some exercise and eating right the pounds should melt off for a little while. I am going to log my exercise to keep up with my minutes and I will be stepping on that treadmill several times today, so it will all add up....to at LEAST 20 minutes because that is the amount of time I set for the V-Day goals...20 minutes 3 times a week...Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I am going to do this!

I sure do miss all of the wonderful ladies that used to comment here. I always felt such support and motivation from them. Each and everyone of them inspired me in some way.

I am glad that Lisa and Maggie are still here. You ladies are an inspiration to me. No matter what...health problems, slipping into old habits, regaining weight lost, you never give up.

It is now week 3 of the V-Day goals and I have not been losing as much weight as I would like, but I am losing so that is progress. I am now down 2 pounds. It might not be nearly as much as I would like, but I will take it and am happy with it. I know that in time everything will come together and I will be losing more. I am ready for warmer weather so that I can go walking in the neighborhood.

Maggie, back in the day when the Sparkling Sparkettes were going strong and I did all of that exercising I felt so good....you just feel good all over after a good workout. So why do I dread working out so much? It just doesn't make sense...well, it does a little...to me it is boring. I used to watch television while walking on the treadmill and that helps, but it is still boring. I tried reading...have seen a LOT of people reading novels while walking on a treadmill...I just can't do it.

But, still, I won't give up either. It sounds like you are doing great with the exercise and the truth is that if we all were active enough we would feel better, be able to eat more and still lose/maintain weight.

Hey Maggie! Glad you popped in...we have missed your smiling face around here. I know what you mean by getting off track...it is so easy to do. Lisa and I are both trying to work ourselves back onto the track, a little at a time. We are slowly but surely getting there.

I have decided that this weight thing is going to be a lifelong struggle, but it is a struggle that is worth the effort so I am not giving up.

Hope to see more of you! emoticon

Holy cow....would you look who decided to stick her head in...LOL

I got a message from Debbie and it was like OMG!!! Thanks Debbie for checking in on me :)

I am so sorry, I forgot about all about checking in here and most everywhere :(

So how are you all doing? I'm doing okay, still struggling along, but I've been on track for a couple weeks, and I'm working out too, I hate to say anything because I get off track so often grrr!

I am sparking along nicely! If it weren't so cold I would go to the park to walk after work. It was around 10F here last night. Brrrrrrrr....I feel chilled to the bone....even though the classroom is warm. I guess I will get my walking done by making a trip to Wally-World instead.

I have issues with my knees now as well, so I know where you are coming from on that one. I know that losing weight would make such a huge difference in how my joints feel. You are right....at this point it is our present and future that we have to be concerned about.

I have been as overweight as you are right now, so I know how that feels. I have been 360 and I am about 3 inches shorter than you, so I know how you feel seeing that number on the scale. I know that we can set our minds to this and be successful and the reality is that if we don't....we won't have too many years left...I am getting there sooner than you...I am 48...will be 49 in just 3 months.

I did not get on the treadmill today, but I did something better. I have a television that is 55" wide with the built in speakers that won't fit into my entertainment center. So, we spent two days last week building a 60" wide section to go between two book cases I have (that we built 22 years ago). Today, we sanded the sides of those bookshelves and the facings to refinish and then stained the new unit. I now have 4 more shelves for my books and two shelves for a DVD and VCR. The entire unit is 10-ft long (only 11" deep) and going in my family room. I still have to move a 10" long entertainment center from the family room to the front living room. I have helped cut wood, glue, nail, sand (hand as well as with electric sanders), and move the units around. My arms, neck, shoulders, and back are killing me....it is good strengthening as well as burning calories....I was up moving around a lot instead of sitting in the recliner....and I was not eating. I must admit that I did indulge in a handful of Cheeto's when I finally sat down a few minutes ago....just had to have something because I had not eaten anything, or had anything other than water, since lunch. I am done for the night....thinking about having another salad for dinner.

I like your idea of calling it "V-Day" for victory!

That sounds like a great lunch.

As for my scale it is right. LOL I had to look it up because I couldn't remember the capacity and I have been hovering around that number for the past month. However I weighed this morning and it fell under the error mark so I had lost some water weight overnight.

I don't think I am being too hard on myself unless you are meaning the excess weight that strains my knees, feet, heart and lungs and every other part of this cumbersome form I exist in... I am just being realistic. It is my present and future I am concerned with... That scale capacity is 15 pounds from 400. Time to dig my head out of the sand and face some difficult facts. I will not let myself go there.

I told my husband my goal to lose 20 pounds before V-day. I think I will look at is as Victory Day instead of Valentine's Day. :p Trying to set myself up for being accountable for my actions in the upcoming weeks.

Breakfast for me was a salad as well. :p With 5bean salad, 2 boiled eggs and a few nuts as toppers and light Raspberry Vinaigrette.

Haven't had much since then but will probably have some peas and greens for supper. On my way to the elliptical to get in at least 7 minutes. Hope I can last! LMAO

Have a great night!

Good for you Lisa! It is hard to give away sweet treats like that...at least it is for me because I LOVE sweets!

As for your scale, could the batteries be low? I need a new scale...mine hasn't worked right for a long time. Anyway, I think you are being a little hard on yourself...we have all felt that way...remember...no regrets about the past...focus on the future. I too have to lose some weight or I will die...I already have high blood pressure and diabetes and feel like I am totally out of control.

I have done really well with my eating today. I had a grilled chicken salad for lunch with 16 ounces of water and am stuffed....I had no breakfast because I had friends over late last night and went to bed so late that it was almost lunch time before I could drag myself out of bed. lol

I dropped off those chocolate truffles I received at a family gathering last night. I also gave away a big box of crunch and munch. I mentioned my new weightloss effort several times at the party hoping I won't be faced with any sabotage in the near future.

If I don't make any changes I am going to die. The writing is on the scale which I just weighed on this morning and it gave an error reading because I must have jumped over it's capacity. I am officially disgusted with myself.

It motivated me to use my elliptical.
Day 1- 7 minutes.

I know what you mean about the holiday food. I made brownie bites and had macaroons for dessert and my mother brought a pecan pie....then left the thing here, so I took it to my mother-in-law's house for dinner and left it there so that I wouldn't be eating it. Share, share, share so you can get rid of that food! LOL

A new year is right around the corner and we have the opportunity to start it off on the right foot. Somehow, we have to find a way to make healthy eating the norm and unhealthy only an occasional thing....this is coming from a person that had a McRib for dinner last night and just finished having one for lunch! Geez!

Well I am no better off and I only have my regular stress to blame. :p

The weight and inches I lost being sick came back and probably brought friends. I am starting the miserable girltime today however so i won't be doing any actual checking/ measuring til the red tide has left.

I really wish people would not give this fat girl candy and unhealthy food for Christmas. I specifically told people i wasn't exchanging gifts this year-couldn't afford to and yet I came home with a huge box of truffles, snack crackers crunch and munch, chocolates and smore mix... :/

I guess next year I should specify no food please.

Thank you Lisa. Right now I am having a very hard time and I don't feel very strong. I will be okay in time though and will be back on track.
