DID YOU KNOW..... emoticon emoticon emoticon

February -- known as American Heart Month. There's no better time to "wear red", and raise awareness about heart disease in women. People of all ages and backgrounds can get heart disease.

A women suffers a heart attack every 90 seconds in the United States. emoticon If you think you or someone you know is having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you seek help quickly, treatment can save your life and prevent permanent damage to your heart muscle. Treatment works best if given within 1 hour of when symptoms begin.

Heart disease symptoms in women: While some women have no symptoms of heart disease, others get dull, heavy to sharp chest pain or discomfort, pain in the neck/jaw/throat, or pain in the upper abdomen or back. These symptoms may occur during rest or physical activity, or be trigged by mental stress.
Women are more likely to describe the chest pain that is sharp and burning and more often have pain in the neck, jaw, throat, abdomen, or back.
Sometimes heart disease may be silent and not diagnosed until a women has signs or symptoms of a heart attack, heart failure, an arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), or stroke.

Know your risk for heart disease and heart attack:

- Diabetes, high cholestrol, and high blood pressure are risk factors for heart disease.
- Smoking, poor diet, obesity, excess alcohol, and being physically inactive are also risk
factors for heart disease.
- Heredity can also be a risk factor because heart disease can run in families.

DID YOU KNOW!

emoticon These classic desserts are full of nutrients that boost the immune system. And tweaking your favorite recipes can make ' em healthier, too.

Pumpkin Pie:

Sniffle-protection power: This seasonal squash is rich I vitamin A, which helps keep germs from invading in the first place.

Make it healthier: Cut calories and cholesterol by swapping skim milk for whole milk and subbing egg whites for whole eggs (2 egg whites equal 1 large egg). And if you're making a graham cracker crust, choose the reduced-fat crackers.

emoticon :

Apple Pie

Sniffle-protection power: Researchers at the University of Illinois report that enjoying an apple a day can increase your odds of fending off viruses, and of recovering faster if you do get sick, compared with folks who don't eat the fruit.

Make it healthier: Slim down your apple pie with this low- fat, low-sugar filling. Use 6 cups peeled tart apples, 1/3 cup frozen apple juice concentrate (thawed), 2 Tbsp. quick-cooking tapioca and 1 tsp. cinnamon.

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the body;

2. ... glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs

1. ... glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion

1. ... glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure

1. ... glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack and can also

The origins of Valentine's Day trace back to the ancient Rome celebration of Lupercalia. Held on February 15, Lupercalia honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.

In addition to a bountiful feast Lupercalia festivities are purposed to have included the pairing of young men and women. Men would draw women's name from a box, and each couple would be paired until next year's celebration.

While the pairing of couples set the tone of today's holiday, it wasn't called Valentine's Day until a priest named Valentine came along. Valentine a romantic at heart, disobeyed Emperor Claudius,. It's decree that soldiers remain bachelors. Claudius handed down the decree believing that soldiers would be distracted and unable to concentrate on fighting if they were married or engaged. Valentine defied the emperor and secretly performed marriage ceremonies. As a result of the defiance Valentine was put to death on February 14.

After Valentine's death, he was named a saint. As Christianity spread throughout Rome, the priests moved Lupercalia from February 15 to February 14 and renamed it St. Valentine's Day to honor Saint Valentine.

The secret to STOPPING MONEY STRESS

Struggling with debt - and the stress that goes along with it? Here's one solution: Consumers who attend financial education programs are 25% more likely to feel in control of their budget, according to a MetLife study. And there may be a health payoff, since 23% of people with high debt - related stress say they're suffering from depression, compared with 4% who don't have financial problems, reports an Associated Press/AOL poll. A Surprisingly Healthy Snack;

Got the afternoon or evening munchies? Reach for popcorn -- as long as it's not slathered with butter, oil or sugar. The crunch snack contains more polyphenols, which are potent antioxidants, than fruit and vegetables, according to University of Scranton researchers. Plus, just one serving of air-popped popcorn ( about 2 tablespoons of unpopped kernels)
orivids more than 70% of your daily whole-grain intake!

For #1, I absolutely detest the smell of diesel engines. I've also heard that you should keep your window rolled up when in traffic because of all the exhaust. That's no longer a problem for me since I quit smoking.

For #2, I had no clue about aspirin. I'm not on an aspirin regime & I'd rather not start. I heard it can be hard on your stomach & I already have signs of absorption problems. DH takes aspirin regularly so I'll make sure he's aware of probably problems with abruptly stopping them.

Thank you Michele!

#2.....Do NOT stop daily aspirin on your own.

Why your heart loves it: If you take low-dose aspirin for any reason, check your supply and run out for a new bottle if it's low. Stopping suddenly can triple your odds for trouble-causing clots in 10 days, (yes 10; that's no typo). If you've got surgery scheduled have a careful talk with your doc now about the pros and cons of stopping your little white, yellow pr pink tablets.

emoticon .............7 Hidden Causes of Heart Attacks emoticon .................

Nearly half of all heart attacks happen to people whose tickers look good. So doing a little extra could save your life.

Here's a crash course in avoiding seven hidden causes of heart trouble..

#1 Heed those dirty-air warnings on the news.

Why your heart loves it: Inhaling ozone -- the nasty gas that results when tailpipe and smokestack fumes meet sunlight and hot weather -- can kill cardio cells, throw off your heartbeat, and boost your odds for a heart attack even if you don't have heart disease. Smart moves: Exercise indoors on high-ozone days. Do your best to avoid exhaust-choked streets. Get out from behind diesel busses and trucks, their tailpipes spew out chemicals and tiny particles that can inflame lungs and arteries, rupture plaque buildups, encourage blood clots, and boost blood pressure, (Get in the mood to shape and slim down.)

To Follow: #2 Aspirin

Did you know that smoking depletes you dopamine reserves! It is said that L-tyrosine may help to increase your reserves (it is also supposed to help your thyroid out too). This is an amino acid that should be taken only on an empty stomach or with a carb meal - not protein. Check with you doctor to see if this could be an option for you. Beware that L-tyrosine taken on a empty stomach may cause stomach upset.

Have an Orange, Not Juice

The picture-perfect breakfast always includes that 6-ounce glass of orange juice sitting there looking delicious, doesn't it? But according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), it's better to eat the fruit than to drink the juice.

Orange juice (or any other juice) raises your blood sugar rapidily. Studies comparing juice and sugar containg soft drinks found no difference in the effect they have on people's blood sugar. The ADA advises people to use the juice as "treatment" for low blood sugar, not as food.

So, what do you do if you want that bright wake-up taste of orange juice first thing in the morning? Try a half-juice and water mix, says the ADA. Or you could try a sugar-free, citrus-flavored drink mix ( and a serving of real fruit later in the day).

From 101 Tips for Improving Your Blood Sugar by the University of New Mexico Diabetes Care Team.

I think you are absolutely right about the 5 things we take for granted! I can really relate to time and health. Since I have been sick, I find myself thanking God every day for still being able to walk and talk, see and feel, touch and taste. Especially that I can still take care of myself and live independently. My friends and family I appreciate soooo much! They have been so great through all of this, and I pray I never take them for granted either. I am so thankful to God for giving me such a great family and friends that really care about me and try to help to make my life better in whatever way the can. And they do! They make it so much better and make me feel loved. After not being able to see clearly from the chemo, or taste anything, I really am grateful for being able to read again and things taste good again.
thank you Michele for posting these! It really makes you appreciate what you have more!

I believe that these are the most important things that we take for granted. There definitely are more things such as the rainbow after a rainy afternoon, a bird taking flight, a flower that has just bloomed, or an internet post that we may have just glazed over but never took the time to reflect upon the words or meanings!

Thank you Michele!

Things We Take For Granted:

Friends and Family
I think most people believe that their friends and family will always be there for them and, as a result, they're often not treated with the kindness, love and respect they deserve. The reality is that these are the very people who we should attend to the most in our lives. I bet many of you are guilty of at least one of the above. There's always a small or large price to pay for taking someone or something for granted.

Things we take for granted:

Your Significant Other;
There's an unfortunate kind of complacency that seems to take hold in most relationships that's born out of familiarity and naturally comes with the passage of time. The sad reality is that taking your siginificant other for granted can be emotionally distressing to your partner and potentially devastating to your relationship. Since human nature tends to take us in this direction, we should all be on guard about the downside of taking our companions for granted.

Things we take for granted:

Time.
This is an interesting concept because most people realize how much they take time for granted until, they get a bit older. Age has a way of teaching us all about how precious time is and how quickly it passes by us. " Where did all of those years go? " That is a question one hears a lot from people as we age and mature.

What expression do you use when you realize time has gone by before you knew it?

More to come.

The First of the things we take for granted:

Food and Water...........When we get hungry or thirsty, we can simply pull into any fast-food joint or store and get something to drink or grab a quick bite to eat. We're also quite accustomed to having our grocery stores stacked high and deep with a vast variety of purchasing options. Food and water is typically only a few minutes away, even at the worst of times for most of us.

Your Health.....When I say Health, I actually mean many different things beside the opposite illness. I'm also referring to things we just do without thought every single day, like your ability to walk, use your hands, speak, hear, smell, taste and think clearly, for just a few examples. The body is an amazing creation and the fact that it operates smoothly most days is still a magnificent mystery that far to many of us simple take for granted.

Why do we not worry about our Health until something happens? Why do we not worry about something until it is gone?

Yes, I often do take these for granted. Thanks for taking the time to remind me to eat well, hydrate often, work on obtaining good health, use my time wisely (& enjoyably), be a good wife, mother, sister, grandmother, & friend. I should post this where I must look at it at least once a day!

I found Guar Gum at the health store. You can get it in capsules but I went for the powder form. You might find it at a local grocery store that has a good natural foods department.

Great info Michele!

Here's one about Guar Gum. I first used it to thicken a soup rather than using cornstarch or a roux & was pleasantly surprised.

On top of it all, it also has some health benefits. From WebMD:

Guar gum is a fiber that normalizes the moisture content of the stool, absorbing excess liquid in diarrhea, and softening the stool in constipation. It also might help decrease the amount of cholesterol and glucose that is absorbed in the stomach and intestines.

There is some interest in using guar gum for weight loss because it expands in the intestine, causing a sense of fullness. This may decrease appetite.

Be sure to take this with at least 8 oz of water to prevent any blockage!

DID YOU KNOW:

Anytime Grandma got a new wooden spoon, she soaked it in apple cider VINEGAR overnight, and dried it off with a towel the next morning. This treatment kept the wood from absorbing food odors, so Grandma didn't have to worry about having her chocolate chip cookies come out of the oven smelling faintly of spaghetti sauce!

DID YOU KNOW: In Grandma's Day !

Like a whole lot of other bathroom products that we take for granted, Kleenex Tissues appeared on the scene when Grandma was a girl. They started out as thin gauzelike paper called Cellucotton that Kimberly - Clark produced as liners for GI's gas masks during World War 1. When the war ended, the company used the surplus to make "Kleenex Kerchiefs," which it heavily promoted as "the Sanitary Cold Cream Remover." Women all over the country scrambled to buy the handy things. ( Until then, they'd used washcloth's and towels to take off their makeup. ) But they soon began writing to the company with a complaint: Their husbands and children were forever snatching the Kerchiefs to blow their noses! The folks at Kimberly - Clark took the hint, changed their marketing strategy, and the rest , as they say, is history

TIP: Tired of losing the screws in your eyeglasses? Make sure the tiny things are screwed in tightly, then paint the ends with clear NAIL POLISH.

emoticon ......GRANDMA's DAY

We all know that garden fresh FRUITS and VEGETABLES are essential for good health.
But did you know that working outdoors with your plants is also good for you? According to
the docs who study these things. It can relax your mind, lower your blood pressure, even help you lose weight -- depending on the particular chore, gardening burns 300 to 450 calories an hour. No wonder Grandma kept her girlish figure all her life.

TIP: Stop a throbbing headache by rubbing half of a fresh-cut LIME across your forehead.

Okay, I found this one in my e-mail today. Some smokers become hyper sensitive to chemicals & I've been trying to flush my body of them hoping it'll help get me to +4.

This blogger estimates it costs $.33 per 2.5 cups of glass cleaner - cheap!!

emoticon
Homemade Glass Cleaner

Ingredients

1/4 cup white vinegar (apple cider vinegar will work as well)
1/4 cup isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
1 Tbsp cornstarch (the cornstarch reduces streaking — anyone know why?)
2 cups water

Method

1. Combine everything in a spray bottle (You can reuse the container you already have from your store bought glass cleaner. I had to buy one at a dollar store since we haven’t used glass cleaner in years :-) !)

2. Shake well to mix.

3. Spray onto glass surface and wipe clean.

TIPS: Shake well before using since the cornstarch might clog up your spray nozzle otherwise.

You can use microfiber cloths or rags to wipe your surfaces clean. I prefer either those options or newspaper to paper towels since paper towels leave lint and are more wasteful.

Make sure to label your bottle so as you make more and more non-toxic home cleaners you will know what is what :-) .

" Previous clinical trials primarily provided evidence of short-term abstinence and the ability of nicotine-replacement therapies to minimize withdrawal effects, " says Alpert. " But what we found is that in the long term, many people who had initial success using NRT products weren't able to quit for good. "

Even so, that doesn't mean smokers should give up the idea of using nicotine replacement therapy to help them quit, says Peter G. Shields, an epidemiologist and medical oncologist at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus. Patches, gum, and lozenges were designed for short term use; participants in the study typically used them for less than three months. But two animal studies published in November 2011 in ' Cancer Prevention Research' found that at least in mice, these products appear safe for long-term use. These findings suggest that someone struggling to stay tobacco free could potentially use nicotine replacement safely for many months or even years--possibly helping the person to remain off tobacco for a longer period of time, says Shield.

QUESTION: Who taught the mice to smoke?

DID YOU KNOW!

As anyone who has ever quit smoking will Probably tell you, kicking the habit is seldom easy.

That's why, when studies in the 1990s suggested that nicotine patches, gum and lozenges could help people quit, smokers flocked to buy them, resulting in more than $800 million in sales annually since 1997. So it was distressing to learn that a new study had found that nicotine replacement products actually didn't help people to quit for the long term.

The study, published online in January 2012 in " Tobacco Control ", found that smokers who quit via nicotine-replacement therapy were just as likely to start smoking again as people who quit without using these products. How could the first studies have been so wrong? The problem, explains Hillel R. Alpert, a public health researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston who led the new study, is that the earlier clinical trials followed people for only a few weeks or months, whereas his study looked to see what happened over the next four years. The longer view found that about one-third of more than 700 participants had relapsed, and that they were as likely to relapse as people who had quit without the help of nicotine replacement.

Did you know that smokers breath deeper when smoking? Make sure you breath deep after quitting to help clear your lungs! Concentrate on the clean, fresh air while inhaling & concentrate on relaxing your entire body on the exhale. In several months, your cilia will be operating at normal capacity! Here's a link to information on the importance of cilia & problems with cigarette smoking:

But I Already Have Cancer, WHY Quit Now?

A study to have been published last June 15, 2012, ISSUE of CANCER found that about 14 percent of patients diagnosed with lung cancer were still smoking five months after their diagnosis and 9 percent of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer continued to smoke following diagnosis. Yet research suggests that quitting smoking at the time of a cancer diagnosis, Can Improve Treatment Response and Boost Overall Survival.
