Dawn - your stepfather sounds like my husband! I have wanted to quit since the day I met him nearly 9 years ago - I was wearing a patch that day! Last year at Christmas he bought me a treadmill with the promise that we would go get Chantix and quit in Jan. I ended up having to make his dr appointment and pick up both prescriptions and we just this year started with it. He NEVER let us run out of cigs and he wakes me up every morning (and in the middle of the night) sounding like he's coughing up a lung.

I was very angry my first week on Chantix-I started it on 12/29 and smoked that first week on it and thought that I was going it alone again and was so afraid I wasn't going to make it again because it's really hard when you are around someone that smokes all the time and cigs are readily available. So on my quit date of 1/5 he actually started taking Chantix and his quit date was supposed to be this past Mon 1/12. When he came home on Mon and told me he "only" had 9 cigs I was kind of devastated inside...thinking he's going to leave me hanging AGAIN! But he did smoke 2 packs a day and he only smoked 8 yesterday so he has cut back and he isn't smoking around here (we never smoked in the house - garage and outside only). He says he's going to continue to cut back this week and on Mon be done...we'll see.

Another fear I have is that he'll tell me he's quit and be sneaking off to smoke...what kind of relationship is that? He won't want to be around me because he'll be trying to figure out a way to get away so he can smoke...I guess time will tell on that one...I just know I have to STAY quit this time no matter what.

Thanks for my turn to vent...now back to you. :-) Does your step-father live with you or you with them? Either way you need to have smoke free zones where no one is allowed to smoke. Sometimes that coughing up a lung sound is an inspiration not to sound like that myself so keep that as a positive for yourself as well. I would definitely tell them not to bring you anymore cigs and that you are quitting and would appreciate their support. Let me know how it's going for you - GOOD LUCK!

KLAREESE, I have quit before also. I quit for two years. I have been smoking this time for about a year and a half and I don't smoke near as much as I did before I quit for two years. I was smoking like a little over a pack a day then. I only smoke about half a pack now. Sooooo, why the hell is is so much harder this time? The whole thing just makes no sense to me. And, my parents called me last night and asked if I needed anything. They even asked, "do you need any cigarettes?" I said "no". I told them that I really needed to quit. MY STEP DAD BROUGHT ME SOME ANYWAY!!! What the hell is all that about? I mean, come on....that man sounds like he is dying every single morning. Literally, he wakes me up because he coughs so loud and so hard and gasps for air and literally sounds like he is about to die. I don't really want to sound like that. I mean, does he just not want me to quit and that is why he gave me a pack anyway. Go figure. Anyway, hopefully he won't do that today. I mean, it is hard enough without having someone rub a pack of smokes under my nose. It is bad enough that he still smokes around here. Well, I guess that is enough venting for now. Thanks!

Be Blessed!!!!!!

Hi Krystal~Excellent advice! You know what I say...whatever it takes and whatever works for you is the ticket!! Quitting is the hardest thing to do but the most wonderful freedom you will ever experience. I too, smoked for 35 long and addictive years!!! I can't explain how good it feels to be free of the ball and chain that was around my ankle for soooo long!!!

Hi Dawn,

Today is day 9 for me as a non-smoker. I actually feel better now than I did the week leading up to my quit date. I realize now that I was edgy because I was giving up something that has been a part of my life for 35 years and I was afraid! I have quit many times before - once for 8 months. This is my last time! I have to remember NOPE - not one puff ever...I cannot be a social smoker it isn't in me.

Don't be afraid to use something to help you get over the cravings--this is a drug! I've tried it all: patches, gum, commit lozenges. This time I am on Chantix and it is amazing how calm it keeps me. The urges still come but you have to realize they only last a couple minutes - you have to have a plan on what you'll do instead of reaching for a smoke. I like the Chantix because it isn't putting the nicotine in my system so I should be clean already and now just breaking the habit of smoking.

Good Luck!!

I recite this affirmation that we say at my church.. It always helps me.

"There is only one presence and one power in my life and in the universe, God the good, omnipotent"

I say it 3 times and by then the craving is gone. emoticon

The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.

Hi Jean,

just remember: N.O.P.E.

Not One Puff Ever

Also -- I know I'm a puff away from a pack a day, and I will be, for always.

The first few days (weeks) are the hardest, but once you've gotten through the beginning, it gets easier. I smoked 2+ packs/day for 24 years, and quitting is by far my greatest personal accomplishment...mostly cause it was the toughest thing I've ever done.

Dawn -- I agree with Susan...You've GOT to want it, and keep wanting it.

good luck!

Ralk ON!!!

I WILL do this
I AM doing this
I DO deserve this.

Hi ! I have been having a tough time with the cravings and mood changes. But I did make a list of why I am quitting and I read it in the morning when I usually have a cig and coffee. I also quit the coffee for awhile. EEEK caffeine withdrawals, I do n ot know which is worse. The threads here are great support. Thanks everyone( yesterday was frustrating, Today is much better)

Dawn I honestly believe that you have to WANT to quit for it to work. It's the hardest thing I have ever done, and I wanted it more than anything. I also had to have a Plan to succeed.
Knowledge is Power. Educate yourself about quitting:
www.whyquit.com/Joel/#book
also read the threads in our quit tips section of this team.
Only You can decide that you WANT this more than anything.
Never quit trying. Just stay quit one day at a time.

You mom may have taken two years to decide quitting is good, but that doesn't mean that it will take you that long. It is a mind set. Really!

Hi Dawn, I understand what you are feeling. Even though smoking was the only (and I mean only) think i absolutely hated about myself, the thought of not having a pack of cigs in my purse would almost put me in a panic attack.

I hated smoking, but I was afraid of loosing my go to thing when it got stressful or upset or happy for that matter.

I am only 7 days on the wagon, actually today will be day 8, but I feel better already. I smoked for about 20 years total. I am going to do it this time for good.

It helps to really clean up your environment. get rid of the ashtrays, have your car cleaned so it doesn't stink. I even took a coat to the cleaners yesterday because I could smell smoke on it. I don't even have a ligher in the house. Good luck!!! you can do it one day at a time.

Hi. Saw your post, and I want to throw this out to you…like weight loss, exercise, etc. quitting smoking should not be approached with the thought that you’re doing this for the rest of your life. If you take such a macro approach, you’re setting yourself up for failure. If fear doesn’t break you, such an overwhelming goal is sure to. No, instead, don’t smoke today. Or don’t smoke this hour. Or this minute. Whatever it takes. Only you can do this for you…and trust me…they are ick sticks, and they will kill you…it’s just a matter of time. You are right to be afraid, but not of quitting, of continuing to smoke. You are an addict. Understanding that is the first step to being smoke free.

Good luck! You’re in the right place to get support on this journey!

Deb

WWGIRLLIFER, you are so right. I mean, maybe I just don't want it so bad. I don't know. I mean, of course I do want it because it causes me so many problems and I hear my step dad gasping for air everyday. He has some serious lung problems caused by smoking. I dont want to be that way but at the same time I just can't look at cigarettes as "ick sticks." I mean, I enjoy to smoke. My says she did to and it was miserable for her to quit. I remember that when she had been quit for a year she was telling me how bad she still wanted to smoke. She even said she wasn't sure if it was worth it and told me not to bother trying. Of course, she was just ill without a smoke at the time. She is quit now for two years and has a totally different outlook. She encourages me now to quit. But I can't help but think....it has taken her two years to finally quit wanting a cigarette. That just seems miserable. I have been procrastinating it for a while now. I have one pack now and I just think I not going to buy any. I know it is going to suck at first but I guess I just need to do it. It is never going to get any easier so I may as well just face the music. Wish me luck!!!! I am sooooo going to need it.

Be Blessed,
~Dawn~

NO Dawn~The only fear I had was wondering if I would fail. I don't like failure! But never once did I think I would miss those nasty ick sticks. They are not only deadly, smelly, expensive, gross, etc. it was something I wanted more than anything else in the world. In order to quit....you need to want it more than anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Okay, so I haven't quit yet. I am just scared too. I finally realized that is my problem. It isn't the cravings as much as the thought of not smoking ever again sort of freaking me out. Does anyone else think like that?
