A little better, just really weak. I still had to take a 2 hour nap today. I just feel really tired. Back to work tomorrow so I have to get my rest today. On Tuesday we are picking up our granddaughter and then I am off work until July 16th. Been looking forward to this vacation for quite awhile.

They are so loyal that way. Mine would all stay by my side when I was sick, too, if they could. I hope you are feeling better today.

We buy Max the big stuffed animals but they don't have any stuffing in them. He does like to make them squeak. He shakes them around in his mouth like he is trying to kill them. Yesterday I was really sick, I had a case of food poisoning and was so sick that I couldn't even stand up. I spent most of the day in bed and my Max never left my side. Even now he is laying on the couch next to me. He has a lot of energy but he must have known that I was really sick. I don't like taking him out much because we are in the upper 90's and have been for over a week. He got his lyme shot and distemper shot yesterday so I don't want him over doing it.

That's funny. We don't have fireflies around here, just a lot of millers and flies. Annie used to go after them, but I don't think any of the others did. Venture, Blue and Patty were all serious like their daddy (a real, working farm dog plus AKC herding champion). Venture did find he liked stuffed animals after he got about 2, but that was all. He used to steal the stuffed animals, though.

I am still enjoying Max as being a young dog. He just turned two. He is so funny with the Newfies. When they are all outside, Max starts running around the yard trying to get the other dogs to chase him. He is so observant. When he wakes me up in the middle of the night to go outside, he gets so distracted by fireflies that sometimes he forgets why he is even out there!

There is something to be said about staggering the ages of your fur babies rather than having littermates, too. It is really hard losing them close together. I had to let Blue go in December, which hurt me and even depressed Venture. I think even though they fought, they enjoyed each other so that they could fight. With Venture showing so many problems this soon after it really hurts.

It is hard when they get older. You can only do so much. My daughter had a cat that just died and she was devastated. Sabrina was 20 years old and we had him since he was a kitten. Courtney grew up with Sabrina and he lived with her when we moved to the country. Her kids got to know him. She knew that he was old but it was still hard.

Annie and Ben (my Aussie) were like Max. Ben ate more than Annie, but she might not eat for a whole day and then eat a little. Once the puppies were born I had to do more restricted feeding cause those youngsters were little pigs. I still haven't gotten Venture's weight down, but I guess he is doing that himself nowadays, though it doesn't show. I hope it is just the heat getting to him. I tried going back to feeding him raw, which he will happily eat, but he keeps getting the squirts. My vet wants him fed natural, but the natural kibble seems to be the only thing I can do for him now.

We open feed so there is always food available. Max is more of a hit and run kind of dog. He grabs a few pieces and then brings them into the living room to eat. He also grabs a few pieces just before we go outside.

He seems to be doing okay. He did his usually wandering in the middle of the night and just woke up this morning. It is too hot for him to eat, apparently. He was asking for breakfast, but he is just leaving it.

Thank God he wasn't hurt. We don't have window wells so I don't have to worry about that. Max sits in the chair with me at night also. I find it quite cozy but a little cramped.

Hey, Liz, keep Max away from window wells. I have boards across mine and Venture still managed to fall in one tonight. Boy, was I panicked. I couldn't find him anywhere, but could hear him panting. He finally got his head up high enough for me to see. I can't pick him up, though, and had to go after the next door neighbor. He never knows what I will be asking him to do for me. Thank the Lord he brought those neighbors a few years ago.

My dogs have always been that way when they could. Venture can't get up by me anymore, but he used to sleep on top of me. That way the others couldn't get too close to me. When he got home after I had my surgery a few years back he climbed up in the chair with me every night to sleep. Of course, that was a little hard on me because there wasn't enough room to move with both of us in the chair.

I have never had such a jealous dog such as Max. When I was spending time with the goats, he got so mad at me that he chewed up the remote for the Wii. He has never done anything like that before.

Venture used to sleep with me whenever he got the chance, as did his mother. He cannot get up into the chair now, but when I got him back home after I had surgery he climbed up next to me every night. I wish they could climb up their now because it is cold in this house and I can't afford to turn the furnace on.

Meri even eats DILL PICKLES. I gave her a taste, thinking that would dissuade her. I gave her a whole one and lay next to me, merrily munching away!
I once had an Australian Short Hair pointer named Esmeralda. She stole a one-pound chocolate bar that I had bought for a fund-raiser. Luckily, the doggie door was in good repair 'cause she musta had the trots!

I can't really think of anything too strange that my ACDs have eaten. They've gotten into chocolate before, and grapes, which they aren't supposed to have. One day I forgot to tie the trash bag shut and they got in and ate spoiled raspberries, peach pits and corn on the cob. That worried me for a week or more, but they were both fine.

My Dachshund was the one who would eat anything. She would peal the radishes as she ate them (she ate the whole thing). She even liked hot chili peppers, which she would take to her water dish and puncture, let them fill with water, and then eat them. She also stole ALL our raspberries and most of the tomatoes.

We are in the habit of eating from TV trays in our little bit of living space. Last night I made curried chicken and rice, Brie likes hers slathered with Hot Japanese Wasabi sauce. She forgot to move the bottle from the floor next to the TV tray. I heard the plastic bottle thumping along the floor a moment ago. Yup, you guessed it. Meri found the bottle and claimed it as hers. It was on the floor after all. I took it from her, but she looked awfully offended! You can tell she is our dog, she will eat anything we eat! INCLUDING WASABI!

What about your dogs? what is the strangest thing its ever eaten?.

I've tried doing that with a mouse before. I can't even follow anything that is already on there or even take things out of a photo to make it better. You must be really good.

I do like to draw, but some things I just can't get right. Most of the paintings I have done I had to enlarge photos and then trace them. I did learn a couple years ago about using a grid and actually got a drawing of Fancy to come out good. Now I just can't get the paint color right.

That's neat. Do you have some special drawing tool to do that? I know I couldn't ever do anything like that with the mouse, but I've seen something before that you can use to draw things.

We are having some pretty warm weather after a couple weeks of constant rain and I've been out trying to get the lawn mowed. The boys have decided they will not come out with me because I had them in their runs a couple days this week. So they stay inside by themselves.

Blue is having some problems with his back leg. I don't know if he goes for walks if it will help or not. At 14 1/2 it is a little hard to tell what is going on.

My boys have been rather upset with me today, though they forgive and are laying close. I put them out in their runs when I left for church this morning. I was commenting that it felt like a nice summerlike day. Before I got my water and through the house to leave it felt like it had dropped 10 degrees, but it still wasn't that bad. I knew it was expected to snow late tonight and into tomorrow, but it started by noon today. We have had more snow today, I think, than we had all year.

This snow should help with fighting the fires. There have been 7 yesterday in one county and large ones in 2 other counties. One day last week we had fires in about 5 counties which, fortunately, they were able to get under control before they destroyed anything. One of those was human set. I wish people would quit setting fires all over the place and destroying other people's property (which some of those 7 in the one county could be from since there were several set in that county last year and one of the ones they just had was from a haystack for cattle, which is what they were burning last year.

I hate hearing about fires like that. Wisconsin never has those kind of big, out of control fires. I hope this is not any indication of more fires this summer in your area.

Oh, that sounds dangerous. Maybe he heard about the problems we are having in Colorado and wanted to make sure they didn't happen up there. There are three or four fires going now and with dry brush and high winds they are hard to contain, much less put out.

Max is beyond crazy. I burned the ditch last weekend and I had about 7 small fires going. Max ran into one and was biting at it. I yelled at him but he kept running into the fires. He actually put a few of the really small ones out by biting at it and running over the top of it. Now he has no eyelashes, eyebrows, whiskers and the hair on his neck is burnt. I guess he won't be sitting outside when we have a fire in the firepit during the summer. I have no idea why he did that. You would think after the first fire and losing all his whiskers, eyelashes and eyebrows that he wouldn't do it again.

It is crazy around here! Russ works a few blocks from the capital (Madison WI) and there were over 25,000 people at the capital today protesting. THEN the democratic senators took off and are hiding out in Rockford IL until the Governor will listen to them. I just hope it doesn't get violent.

I did look at the pictures. I love the one of Venture in your chair.

Now my rooster is in the basement. His wattle got frostbit and then it got all swollen. So swollen that he couldn't eat or drink. Still not sure if he is going to make it or not but I am vigilant about giving him water from a dropper and soft food from my fingers. I just hope he gets better.

One of my hens froze to death last night. I felt so bad for her. It did give me an opportunity to get Max close to one of my hens, even if she was dead I told Max to be nice and he didn't grab her or bit her so that is a good sign. Still sucks that one of my little hens died.

Tippy (fainting goat) always tries to head butt Max through the gate. Last night when I opened the gate Max ran in and than ran back out. That was enough to cause Tippy to straight leg it over to the chicken coop and tip over. Oh, so brave behind her gate. I couldn't stop laughing.

Very nice. Russ and I spent New Year's Day with my parents and siblings, who I have not seen in 17 months due to fighting. A lot of tears, emails and phone calls later we finally all got together and it was fantastic. Now I am fighting a cold and today is my last day off.

Max has become a big baby. He sits on my lap all the time. Even when he is chewing on a rawhide he brings it up and then gets me all sticky and slobbery. I actually love having a dog that I can snuggle with though. He is funny when he lays down too. The Newfies all circle and lay down. He just sort of falls over - he is a plopper. I sure love him.

We have an outdoor wood burner that heats our house and the poleshed. Russ likes it warm so we keep it at 73. We spent about an hour trying to get to work today before we finally turned around. Guess it is a vacation day for me. Max is pretty happy about that.

Oooh, I think I'll stay here. I can't handle the cold. I don't think my boys would like it that cold, either. Hope it is cozy in your house.

We are suppose to get more snow this week. It took me over a half hour just to shovel the deck. Now with the winds we are at about 30 degrees below zero. I feel like I am living in Antartica!

I've been seeing reports of the snow in your part of the country. There has been a lot of snow in the mountains recently, but we have only had one storm here -- a blizzard that lasted all of about 5 minutes. We couldn't see across the street for those 5 minutes, though. Some channels they say we MIGHT get a little snow Thursday (which I would prefer on Wednesday or Friday). I am wondering what it will do next week.

We are buried in snow and so far Max is not liking it. I think I need to get him little booties. I never had to worry about that with the Newfies but they love the snow.

We went to see Tangled with Jordan today. It was such a good movie. Jordan really liked it. Then when we got out of the movie, Santa was there so he got to sit on his lap and get his picture taken. After that Russ and I spent the next 4 hours shopping. My feet are not too happy with me.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Mine was of mixed blessings. I am on talking terms with my parents and siblings (it had been 16 months since anyone has talked to me). My eldest son and his family were not able to join us. He is struggling with a lot of things going on in his life and all I can do is pray for him and be here if he needs me.

Well better to eat something healthy like raspberries than llama poop. Max follows me into the woods when I go in there to chop down vines. Our woods if full of wild rasperries with tons of thorns and it is like a puzzle for him to get from one side of the woods to the other side without getting tangled up. I think he likes the challenge.

Oh, that is funny that Max likes to eat the flowers. When mine were puppies we were visiting my aunt and Blue was running along the side of the yard and turned and cut a rose off the bush as he ran by. I never saw that one coming. They also dug up her daylilly bulbs. My dachshund used to like the raspberries. We never knew we had any until one day when I saw her picking them off the bush. Tons of bushes but no berries for about 16 years.

I tried carrots with our dogs and they mostly chewed them and spit them out. Unless they are on top of a pizza or burger they don't want them. Max does like raspberries. He ate as many as I picked this summer. He also like to eat flowers. I was yelling at him all the time for eating my beautiful blood red roses. At least his breath smelled nice.

A couple of my dogs favorite treats are apples and carrots (baby carrots). The apple tree out back produced this year and Venture kept going down and getting the apples that dropped from it.

We also used to give the dogs pigs ears but that gave them diarrhea so bad that we quit doing that. Sometimes we will buy lamb's ears (poor lambs)but all those kinds of treats are so expensive. Our dogs love marshmellows more than any treats and those are pretty cheap.

I have not heard anything bad about rawhides. Thanks for the heads up - I will have to check it out. It took over an hour to clean up Angel tonight but she seems to be doing a little better. I have also never heard of antlers for dogs to chew on. I have heard of cows hooves and those don't sit well with our dogs. They chew them up and then they puke up the pieces. Never mind that they smell horrible.

I can understand about Angel's problem. My dogs started going in the bedroom last year (mainly after a guy was here who was supposed to help with cleaning my back yard) and now they can't seem to go all night or sometimes even during the day without messing.

I quit giving rawhide because I kept reading horror stories about it swelling too much, even though I hadn't had any problems with it. I was getting the dogs bully sticks, but they quit chewing on those so I haven't gotten any for about 2 years. I have read about antlers on the Dog Lovers team, but I've never tried those or even seen them, I don't think.

Max loves all toys. He is also very hard to keep in rawhides. We have resorted to buying the very large rawhids so that they keep him busy longer. He likes to bring his rawhide up on my lap and chew on it while he is sitting on me. I am not so fond of this little habit he has but I think he just really likes being by me.

Our oldest newfie (Angel who is 13) is having problems holding it at night. Last night she peed and pooped in the house while we were sleeping. I know she feels bad and can't help herself. I just don't know what we are going to do about it. I will have to look online for XXL doggie diapers.

Venture will find the squeakers, too, and constantly squeak them if the toy has one that works (most don't anymore). He scared me half to death one day with the horse puppet he stole when he got it whinneying. I didn't know he had brought it into the room. That is one toy he must have really been wanting because he had to climb onto my chair, onto the computer desk and across the sofa to get it. He was so funny when he brought it into the study that night because he would make it whinney, then he stopped and nosed it like checking to see if it was all right, then licked it on the face, then started squeezing it again. He hasn't played with anything much lately.

Max has a knack for finding the squeaker in any stuffed toy there is. When we first got him we would keep a stuffed animal on the bed for him and we would be awaken in the middle of the night by the squeak, squeak, squeak sound.

One of my girls I had used to throw her stuff up and chase it when I was not out throwing it for her. I think that was Bridgitte throwing her Kong. Annie preferred frisbees. Those two were fetching crazy. The boys and Patty have never had any interest in fetching. Venture does like stuffed toys, though, and will steal them if someone brings one in the house.

It has been working out really well for me to work with Max for about 20 minutes in the bedroom away from the rest of the dogs. He is so easily distracted otherwise. He jumped up on my LazyBoy chair and went all the way over. He is so funny. He is so good about playing with himself. He will toss his ball in the air and then chase it or he will shake up a stuffed toy and throw it around.

I have been working on it steadily and then I get to a part that is hard for me - like Pepper dying and as I write it, I relive the emotions and it takes so much out of me. Most of it is humorous but just as in life, it does have it's tragic moments also.

Yea - about 12 years ago I did step in a huge pile of newfie nuggets, fell on my leg and ended up breaking my knee on both sides. Yes, it is as painful as it sounds. About three years ago, I had my knee replaced. Actually I am writing a book and believe it or not the title is called "Death by Newfies"

Now that would have been pretty funny to see. I think one of my most embarrasing moments is when we lived in the city and I was picking up dog poop in the back yard. It was hot and a biting fly landed on my leg and bite me. Without even thinking I slapped my leg - yup with the glove on that was covered in dog crap.

Oh, I didn't mean the rope goes around the back feet. It goes around the girth area, just in back of the front legs. Of course, if he got your meaning when you yelled at him, there isn't a need for that rope.

That must be a sight to see with him running around with your pajamas. I wish my dogs would stick to something like that. Venture once ran in with my underwear and threw them at me.

Bet that duck was pretty scared. The wrapping it around his back feet sounds like a good idea but I really think that after I yelled at him the last time he knows that the chickens mean more than food to me. I can't believe how attached I have gotten to him in such a short time. You can really tell that he is MY dog. He rolled over all by himself today and I was so excited and telling him what a good boy he was that he grabbed my pajamas and ran into the living room with him. I couldn't really yell at him.

Have you tried a long line on him around the chickens? You can either let him drag it so you can step on it if he gets too wild (best way, but often hard to do) or hold it loosely. There is also a way that you wrap it around him behind his legs (down from the collar between the legs, then around the girth and stick the end you hold through between him and the line going around him). That one is often used for control until they respond to voice.

A friend here tried one of her dogs on ducks at a trial one time and the dog grabbed a duck and and just claimed it for himself. Never bit or hurt the duck, but wouldn't let anyone have it, either. I don't think she ever tried ducks without a lot of training at home after that, though.
