Max has experienced his first snow. He love it!! He runs around so fast that he leaves a snow flurry behind him. He also likes to run with his head down in the snow. The newfies have always loved the snow so now they can all play outside together.

Now when we get home I make sure that I get out to the chicken coop before Russ gets Max out of the house. While I am putting the chickens to bed, Max runs around the outside of the pen, as usual, but when I come out he is not so wound up as when we first get home. I hang on to his collar when I come out of the pen and just keep saying Max, sit down. I don't get excited so then he doesn't get AS excited.

Heeling is probably their strongest drive, 2nd to being bossy, and begging (for food or attention).
emoticon

Max is probably just eager to interact with you. A new routine of having him do a few things may interupt his "self-assigned" activity. Maybe practice some "look-at-me" or basic obedience (sit, down, etc.), or even a series of tricks to get him thinking and cooperating in a positive manner. Maybe you could teach him to put the groceries away. LOL!

They're so darn smart, they create jobs when they think they need to be doing something. Sometimes their choice of jobs is not the best idea...

That must be a strong instinct in this breed of dogs. When we get home from work, if I don't spend enough time greeting Max, he will bite at my feet when I am trying to walk. I can't even begin to count the number of shirts and pants that have holes in them from him. It is easy to look back a few months ago and see where he was and see how much he has improved. Now if I could just get him from springboarding off the couch.

It's good that you're starting early while he's a pup (while he's very receptive and before it becomes habitual). Let him know when you disapprove with a quick noise or word (I tend to default to "aaaaaagh"). When possible, show him an appropriate behavior. For nipping there's not much you can do short of giving him a toy or something approved for biting(?). The important thing is to communicate that it's not O.K. with you. He's a pleaser, he won't want to disappoint you.

With my deaf dog "Tater" I usually reach down and gently grasp her muzzle (usually she nips me when I run around with her), and "show" her a no signal. She lets up and behaves until the next time she gets too excited, but seems to be developing a little more control. She's so old, I hate to ruin her fun. I'm sure it would've been easier to "nip it in the bud" (pun intended) when she was a juvenile.

Right now we are really working on him not biting Ginger's (Nefoundland)ankles. He did some damage on Thursday and now Ginger can't walk on all four legs. I feel bad for both of them. Max loves Ginger and doesn't understand why she won't play with him and Ginger won't leave the couch and is on pain medication. I think part of this is my fault for never really saying anything when we would chase them around going for their ankles. I know that is part of his nature. I am just going to have to be really creative to keep him busy and show him that he has to be nice to the other dogs.

That really helps to run the "zoomies" out of them. Cute little Max, I can just see him giving that little spot of light a workout.

Last night Max was still so wound up before we went to bed that I took the laser pointer outside and had him run around chasing it for about 15 minutes. That did the trick. He was pretty quiet last night.

Awwwww, poor Angel. It's so much harder when they can't even see the "assault" coming. Tater actually puts herself in harms way trying to herd Sheila as she darts around for the Frisbee. She really took a hit today and got knocked onto her side. I have to say, Tater is still quite the scrappy little cattle dog, she took the spill in stride.

Yes, I feel bad for Tater. That is exactly what happens to Angel too. She is 13 years old (very old for a Newfie) and she is totally blind. We don't have any stairs and she knows the house by heart. Max likes to springboard off of her and she loses her balance. Angel gets extra pets and she has special booties that have traction on the bottom.

We had Sheila for about a month and then her owner took her back for a month. We just got her back (again) a couple of weeks ago. It will be hard to let her go, but I had just adopted Tater last March and she's too old to tolerate such a young dog. Tater gets knocked down every time Sheila darts by her. So it wouldn't be fair to the oldster to add another challenge to her golden years. That's what makes it a little "easier" to place Sheila in a new forever home. You do have to keep a certain perspective for fostering that's for sure.

How long has Sheila been with you? Will it be hard to give her to a good home. I don't know if I would be able to foster a dog and then give it away. Cripes I have 4 roosters (I only ordered one) and when I thought about giving one of my roosters away I felt a little sick inside. I get strong attachments to my animals. I am glad that you do that because it is so needed but if I did that, I would have hundreds of dogs!

Max is such a hoot! Our foster dog "Sheila" loves the spraying water and hose too. She also picks up the hose and runs around the yard with water pouring everywhere. I know there's a cute trick hidden in that activity somewhere, but I haven't quite figured out what (water an area or container on command perhaps?). The real trick will be gaining control of her antics!

Max helped me clear brush out of the woods last night. He also helped me unwind the hose and fill up the water tank for the wild life animals. He sure does like to play tug-o-war with the hose. He also likes to jump through the stream of water when I am watering plants. Such a helper......

We have a big dog washing area that we had built into the house down in the basement but of course I thought it would be easier in the tub. Next time I will know better. He sure does smell better though.

Sounds like you got your bath too! That little rascal, he really enjoys getting a good workout doesn't he?

We had hot/cold water plumbed to one of our hose bibs so bath time is outside in the dog's yard. They all tolerate it pretty well, but both dogs were adults when I got them, so someone else showed them the ropes.

Max found a nice big stinky pile of raccoon poop and of course he just had to roll in it. So, he got his first bath. I thought he would love it because he is always jumping in the water tub outside. His feet hit that water and he was trying his hardest to get out of that tub. Between the two of us we got the entire bathroom soaked. Maybe if I would have gotten him some bath toys........

I think we are pretty much done with the rain. Last night we had a hard frost. At least my birds are back at my feeders on the deck. We have a water bowl for the birds that we plug in and it doesn't freeze. We even get squirrels on the deck that want a drink.

I bet digging up rocks kept Max's nails nice and trimmed. I'm glad he doesn't like the walnuts, that'd be rough on the 'ol digestive tract.

I think I'll wait until we get some rain before I head out to dig in that heavy clay -- that stuff is like concrete during the dry season!

Now that we are done with the bulbs he was furiously digging to get the rocks out of the back yard. We just built a few years ago so we still had some rocks that we just never got around to picking up. They are gone now. Then we moved on to picking up a wagon full of black walnuts - he didn't help with that. I don't think he likes the way the smell. He sure is a happy fellow. Good luck with your unearthing and replanting. YUK!! I am sure it will look beautiful next year around your oak tree.

Max was a big help as we pulled dead brush out of the woods. He would help carry sticks to the wagon. Then he helped dig the holes for my bulbs that I planted. What did I ever do before Max?

Max does have a good nose and it usually lead to frantic digging in the dirt. It is like we live in the middle of a mine field with as many holes as that little stinker digs.

Well I am sure thankful that he doesn't eat poo. I shouldn't say that - he doesn't eat dog poo but is crazy for chicken, llama and goat poo. Personally I don't see what all the excitement is about.

I bet Max was wondering how those geese could "float" above the ground. As far as eating bugs, I've seen Tater (who is 12+ years old) tasting spiders, so I suppose eating bugs never stops (good source of protein I suppose). I'm not sure what's worse, them eating bugs or poo.

Brandy has (only recently) become afraid of Thunderstorms. We are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning right now (though the storm really isn't too bad), and she is just shaking. It mostly happens when we have the blinds open and she sees the flash of the lightning. This started about a month ago, with one particular strong storm. There was a very close lightning strike. She has been freaked out by the lightning ever since. Poor girl. I have to wrap her in a blanky and hold her to get her to stop shaking so hard.

My Rinky Dink has adopted our litter of Australian Shepherds. She won't let the Mama or Daddy in the pen with them. Good thing they are weaned.

She can't do much about the Ma and Pa when I let the little ones out in the yard to play.

Tater and Red are both napping peacefully at my feet. Poot Tater had a trip to the vet today and she was pretty stressed out when they drew blood. They have a note on her file and diligently muzzle her for all shots, etc. She may be old, but she's still quite scrappy.

My poor Aussie mix is feeling kind of puny. She got her yearly vaccines yesterday, and we thought we were in the clear. However, she had a delayed reaction to the Rabies vaccine. Her poor snout swelled up this afternoon! She got a steroid shot, and is doing a little better now. Poor puppy with the swollen face!

For those who may not have seen it, another kudo for this amazing breed:

A family dog helped keep a 3-year old Arizona girl from freezing during a night in the wilderness. Victoria…. was playing outside when she disappeared last week with her Queensland heeler, Blue. Authorities launched a land and air search as temperatures dipped into the mid-30s. After 15 hours, rescuers spotted the shoeless Victoria about a half-mile from her home lying on the ground, with Blue cuddling beside her, keeping her warm. “He was very excited,” said rescue pilot..”He ran around while the medic tended to the little girl and when it was time to go, he jumped right into the helicopter.” (The Week, 03/05/10)

Go, Blue!

It not only rains in California, it snows too! Red is enjoying sticking his head in the snow and looking for his Frisbee under all that white stuff! It was quite a bounty of snow this last week, but alas, it's melting now under all this rain.

I guess my ACD is a bit more "retiring" than yours, he's curled up in a ball dreaming of going for a run. We'll go out later this afternoon for a long walk with some Frisbee tossing for good measure.

She ducked under the electric fence to go over and bark at the neighbor's dogs. She can't contain herself.

A small herd of free range cattle just tried to walk accross our property. Meri just sent them packing the way they came in. She is so fast, she almost runs down the wild Antelope that come through here several times a week. Brie

I rolled out the vacuum cleaner last Saturday with Rinky Dinky inside with me. That's the first thing I've ever seen her back away from. I'm sure she would have warmed up to it if I'd let her stay in but I needed to vacuum and she's not old enough for me to go without watching her while she's inside.

Since I've decided to clean my house from one end to the other, little Miss Libby had to go outside to her kennel. She trys to herd the sweeper, the dust rag, the broom...whatever is moving. The weird thing...she doesn't do that when my husband runs the sweeper...only me. Maybe she's in shock just like me when she sees a man with a sweeper....haha.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

I know Rinky Dink has to be busy all the time. What is yours doing today?
