I've always liked mantises, but at the same time I'm terrified of them. lol. The first night I ever spent away from home in a college dorm, one flew in my window and terrorized me! I didn't think of squishing it, but had to get it OUT...I was very shy and ended up making a new friend because I asked the dorm mother-person to help and she wrapped it in a t-shirt and we deposited it outside.

Mother's Day just passed, and with my other gifts I received a couple of Praying Mantis cocoons from my son. He goes to the garden center every year and gets them for me. A kind of rite of spring for us.

We put them in a clear container and wait for them to hatch, (they're darling.. only 1/4 inch long and fully formed) then we release them in our yard and the neighborhood. They are amazing beneficial- eating huge amounts of mosquitos and other pests. Also, I've always just thought they were neat. They carry an air of sentience about them.

I've read conflicting things about insects being appropriate 'animal spirit guides', but I've always felt connected to them somehow.

Some of the pollen where I'm living is amazing. Last weekend I saw a bunch of pollen floating out on the river... several dozen yards from shore, and it wasn't calm water either.

Well in addition to pollen etc, Yellow Dust (originally sand from the Gobi Desert) contains nasty stuff from China's recent industrialization: heavy metals, carcinogens, and the like. Kind of scary stuff.

It's like being punched in the throat some days. :(

Oh, yeah, we get that, too. My yard is COVERED in pollen. Every morning I wipe a huge sheet of pollen off of my windshield with the wipers. It's nasty! that's why my poor doggie is so sneezy.

Here in Korea, Spring means YELLOW DUST SEASON. As someone with allergies AND asthma, the dirty air has been awful for me. I'm always either wheezing or sniffy or suffering from a a sore throat. :(

However, all of the flowers in the pots and parks are blooming, and the colors are just beautiful. Such an improvement over dusty city grays and tans and blacks!

well, I am trying real hard. But so far this spring we've dealt with an ant infestation (got rid of with herbs), TERMITES (no herbs for those: $800 treatment), a speeding ticket (yeah I was speeding but city cops are thicker than flies on...honey since the city is broke), and my poor collie mix having allergies (vet bills on top of above expenses, plus she can't play outside as much...and she's a border collie so she's NUTS. AND on steroids).

And I have a coworker who is completely incompetent and interferes with my work at least every other day.

But other than that, things are grand. lol! I am seeing LOADS of wildlife...bunnies, squirrels, deer, foxes, birds...really cool! Also, I heart the farmer's market...I've been getting two heads of lettuce a week and it stays SO fresh, so we eat salads all week. I get huge, very sweet tomatoes, too. And I got my first batch of strawberries last week. Gonna get a whole tub this week, and make a pie, or trifle, or something. And I'm going to try to nab some asparagus for soup. Also, sassafras! There's an herb vendor who sells it every other week and I love making tea from it.

I did an earth day demo for my job about making herbal shampoo and hair treatments, and people have been telling me in the hall "I tried so-and-so and loved it," so that's nice, too.

Aaaahhh.... spring!
My orchard/front yard is in bloom...
There's a robin's nest with three little blue eggs in my Red Honeysuckle just outside my bedroom window...everyting's GREEN instead of WHITE!
yeah... I adore spring!

I just can't get enough. :) Though my grass is OUT OF CONTROL.

Evening thunderstorms, cool crisp mornings, birds everywhere....

Spring is so wonderful!
