Last night went well... we were minus a member, and we still won 2 games and took the pin count. Ending up with 6 points was good. Last night was a "positioning" round? I didn't do great, but not terrible... 104-114-121. At least I went upward in score emoticon DH had a 190 (the second game) before his shoulder went out.

No practice for me today. Back is absolutely KILLING me! It has not been 100% since the end of October, and today it pretty much feels like it did that morning at the end of October when it felt like someone whacked me with a baseball bat! I saw the chiropractor on Wednesday and have another appointment on 12/29, but if it does not start improving by Monday I'll be back there sooner!

Tuesday evening results: 159 (UGH!), 188, and a 215 for 562 series. Really struggled to find a god spot on the lanes in game 1, got a little better in game 2, then pretty much had it down in game 3. Team-wise, we won all 4 so we should be very close to 1st place!

LOL Patrick. never heard 12 consecutive strikes over two games called a wrap around 300. The most often used term is a Varipapa 300 after PBA pro and hall-of-famer Andy Varipapa. He was as well known for his tournament prowess as he was for his amazing trick shot ability. Check out videos of him on YouTube:

615 practice series yesterday for me (183, 216, 216). Thought I was going to get a wrap around 300 as I finished game 1 with 4 strikes and opened game 2 with four more, but ball came in light in the 5th frame so that ended that fantasy! Overall a good session. As usual, looking to carry what I learned to league play on Tuesday night.

Another night tonight of consistently hitting the pocket and carrying strikes. Should I be happy or sad? I'll take happy because I have to believe one night the hits will carry for a terrific series. But team went 7-0 and my average went up a pin despite scoring lower every game: 200-181-169 = 550. Only two missed spares all night but one missed split game one and one game two and two game three so overall a good night. emoticon -- Lou

Much better night in Tuesday league play! My scores: 190, 235, and a 203 for a 628 series. The only irritating part was that I had one open in each game but at bad spots -- game 1 it was a split in the 9th, game 2 an easy miss in the 10th, and game 3 an easy 6-10 conversion missed! But I did convert all my 10 pin opportunities -- 6 of them -- and had a good line in games 2 and 3. Team-wise, we had a another tie in game 1 -- what are the odds of two ties in two weeks! Good news is that we pummeled them in games 2 and 3 and took series. Game 2 we set the season high for team scratch game with a 122, and that was with one blind score (our top bowler called out sick and we could not scrounge up a sub).

A good night all the way around!

Got 50 bonus points for team this morning on spin... emoticon
DH bowled his first 208 game today... best in his life! He is definitely improving in the bowling department! My best tonight was a 132... We won two games and pin count against the first place team tonight...thanks to DH's outstanding scores for the evening. emoticon
Lou, I have one Cardigan Welsh Corgi who is 9, and a Mexican Redheaded Amazon parrot who is around 25. He will outlive us, we think! LOL! I would love to have another Pembroke or Cardigan puppy to show, but I cannot handle that and DH. So until Chevy crosses the Rainbow Bridge, I will be a one dog owner. It has been 37 years since we have only had one dog in the house.
Sparking is going well. I'm able to ride recumbent bike about everyday for at least 30 minutes.
Was on retreat yesterday and today.
Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! emoticon
Too tired to stay up much longer... will try to catch up on posts later.

Glad the suggestion worked, Patrick. It helped me stay in the pocket last night with only one split. So far this season splits have killed me -- usually 6 or more a night. A friend gave me the tip to keep the speed up on all shots and it has been working well. I'll tell Mike, the friend that his idea worked for you during practice. emoticon -- Lou

A 621 practice set yesterday. Really concentrated on form and speed using my heavier ball and it paid dividends! A few other changes:

- Brought my bowling balls in from the car and gave them a good cleaning (plus they stayed warm vs sitting in the car and being cold!)

- Used the arrow on the 10th board as my "go to" target for my ball. I have been trying to throw to a spot way down the lanes so decided to change it up...

- Did not try to overthrow the ball (too much speed). That way, as you suggested Lou, I was able to keep my speed consistent for all 10 frames.

We shall see if this translates into improvement on Tuesday...

A frustrating scoring night tonight. Had two Brooklyn hits and one first ball gutter, every other shot was in the pocket but 6 or so 7-pins and about 6 10-pins plus a few 4-pins kept me from scoring a terrific series if only a few of those hits were strikes. I was rolling the ball really well, timing was good after last Sunday's practice.

But by not carrying those single pins the best I could do was:

195 (with one missed split)
172 (one missed spare)
184 (two missed spares) for 551 series. Team won 3 of 7.

Have to keep working on the timing but happy overall with how I bowled tonight. -- Lou

Patrick, could it be you are letting up in the second half of the games without realizing it? As you know, that leads to slower ball speed and hits higher on the headpin. What types of leaves are you getting the second halves?

Team and I continue to struggle. I had a 190, 171, and a 187 for a 548 series. What was maddening last night was that each game I started with 3 or 4 strikes in the first half then faded in the 2nd! No clue what is going on! All I can do is keep practicing and hope the trend changes. As a team we tied the first game, lost big in the 2nd, and lost the 3rd by 7 pins! I believe we are now out of first place.

Not so good night last evening: 172 214 192 for a 578 series. Was only able to find a sweet spot in the 2nd half of game 2, the rest of the night lots of first ball 9's and a few nasty splits. Except for our leadoff bowler, the rest of the team struggled in the same manner. Other team was on fire the first two games so they ended up winning 3 out of 4. I think we are now tied for first place. Hopefully we'll break out of our funk next week!

Nearly every decent bowler admitted the lanes were funky Friday night. A 215 bowler on our opposing team shot 504, to give an example. My last game and series were high on our pair: 141-175-229 = 545, held average, team won 5 of 7. Six missed spares but only two splits. Have to concentrate more on spares, missing so many is killing 600 series so often.

We're off this week (day after Thanksgiving) but practiced six games yesterday, may try to get a few in tomorrow then next Sunday again. -- Lou

Our league's center uses LeagueSecretary.com but if the counter person entering the data week to week messes up then it throws the stats off and is often difficult to correct. I liked the old way where the league's secretary compiled everything but that's how this center runs things for its leagues. Hope you get it straightened out.

Meanwhile, a most emoticon series, Patrick! emoticon

Last Friday our team won 4 of 7. Once again, missing easy spares (5) and getting splits (5) cost me a 600 series. Had 196-199-189 = 584, raised average two pins. As I get back to hitting the pocket consistently my confidence is building. Onward and upward.

Tuesday evening results: 196, 237, and a 223 for a 656 series. Average should go up a pin or two! The stat sheets were all messed up so none of last weeks scores were entered in. Not sure how that is happening since it was my understanding that our league secretary uses software we (the league) authorized for purchase a year ago. May need to ask some questions if the same thing happens next week.

emoticon

We split last night, but the 2nd place team lost 3 our of 4 so we are still very much in 1st place. We managed to go 6-2 against the high handicap teams the past two weeks, which is pretty darn good (nothing against high handicap teams -- really keeps us lower handicap teams on our toes!).

Leah, you sure have had a rocky time lately. It's happy news that your husband is progressing so well and that your scores are improving emoticon but sad news that you had to say goodbye to your beloved doggie emoticon . I had to do the same in January but still have Thumper the Shepherd for company. Do you have other pets?

As for the rules, if your league is sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) -- www.bowl.com -- then the league must follow rules established by USBC and any other rules your league members vote in. Even if the league is not sanctioned (NOT recommended!) then following the same USBC rules means there are standards everyone will follow. This includes rules to handle any disputes, etc. Bowl.com lists the many benefits of sanctioning such as bonding of the league's money in case of theft or malfeasance by the treasurer. Everyone can still have fun.

We didn't bowl Halloween night but the week before was disappointing for me: 137-166-193 = 496. After raising average nearly 5 pins in two weeks, this week dropped it 2. Team went 2-7.

After that I wondered if the changes I'm making in my game would ever pay off but three good practices has me thinking maybe things are definitely improving.

Last Friday was a good example. I went high on the headpin 3 times and missed it to the right 2 times. Every other shot was in the pocket but the scores don't reflect that success: 164-199-182 = 545. So many single pin spares. Just couldn't get the strikes. Could have been so much better. Sure felt good to be confident in my shots again though. I think that is one thing I have lacked. Confidence allows us to roll aggressive shots. Team went 3-4, having a tie in 3rd game. We're still in the bottom quarter of 22 teams. Our two new league bowlers are trying and are fun to be around but their scores are pretty low. Ah, well, we're a team and do our best each week.
*******
Wishing us all a successful and happy week. Thank you for posting. emoticon -- Lou

emoticon Patrick!
We've been trying to discern if we want to move back into the city of Charlotte... DH is having some more brain issues, and we are not sure if living out in the boonies is the best thing any more...
So, I've not been on SP too much other than the basics.
Here is my score report for the church league last Saturday...122-92-113. DH meanwhile had his best night ever... 187-149-159! For someone who could not coordinate feet and hands 2 years ago, he is doing AWESOME!
Yesterday at Senior Fun Time, I was a bit better...143-132-106. I was tired going into the first game. I'd taken my 13 1/2 year old Cardigan that morning to the vet to allow her to leave us in peace. She had congestive heart failure, and was only going to go downhill. She left us peacefully and with dignity.
My consistency is improving. If I would practice more, I would be even better. Perhaps when the moving issue is resolved I can get in a weekly practice session again.
Hope everyone is doing well. I remember all of the team in my prayers.
Looks like Winter is approaching. Stay warm!

One of my best practice sessions in a LONG time this afternoon: 212, 244, 246 for a 702 series! Split the first game between the light and heavier ball, but heavier ball was reacting better so games 2 and 3 all heavy ball. Hoping this carries into next Tuesday when it counts!

Nice scores CATHOLICCORGI!

Back at league play last evening after a 1 week break due to a fun trip to Jamaica! 210, 212, and a 174 for a 596 series. Had a chance for a 600 series but left a ringing 10 pin on my second shot in the 10th of the 3rd game. Buried them on shot #1, but 10 pin would not budge on shot 2! Overall not a bad night considering I had not picked up a ball in two weeks. Arm is feeling it today though! Team won all 4!

emoticon My scores were much better yesterday! 137/121/143 for a 401 series. I was pretty consistent, and felt good about how I bowled. I hope to do as well tomorrow. I tried to stand at the same spot and target, and saw where I needed to adjust during practice.. For the most part, I was successful.
Hope everyone has had a good weekend. Cannot believe it is November 1 on Saturday!
Good week to all!

Just a 553 series last evening. My lighter ball was not finishing well and should have switched to the heavier ball which I was using for cross lane spares. The good news was that we swept all 4 again this week against the 3rd place team so we will have a comfortable lead in 1st place. We all really want to win the 1st half season title!

emoticon Well, scores aren't fantastic, but I am more consistent. My average is 115.43 right now. I'm inching up to 116...LOL! The Senior games are lots of fun, and I am finally learning to get the ball out in front of me and use the curving to my advantage. I wish I could practice more as I used to in the beginning, now that I understand better. But I am grateful for my weekly games on Mondays. DH has his average up to 150. Church league team is not doing so well. They are using 230 to figure handicaps. DH says he isn't going to bowl next year because they are emphasizing "playing by sanctioned rules" than just having fun. We'll see when April gets here. Perhaps it is time to move on. I would like to stay. I don't want the people who are "taking over" to stop me from enjoying myself. If they want to play as if they are in a tournament, that's their loss... the money is very important to them, it seems, than the fellowship. Such is life...
Anyhoo, I am not giving up! I'm slowly Sparking away! Moved my step goal up to 5000 steps a day, and I am beginning to consistently reach the goal. emoticon
When I had my physical, all of my numbers were great. No cholesterol issues, no diabetes, and BP was so good I am taking 1/2 tablet of HTZ as a preventative measure. Doctor was very pleased. The Rheumy doc was happy with me too. They both want me to keep losing weight and exercising as I have been doing. There will always be the usual aches and pains that come with growing older and the Rheumatoid Arthritis. My Fibro is under control, too. I am very blessed!
The holidays are about to commence, so I hope everybody will have a great Holiday Season. The year has flown by! emoticon

Another good series, Patrick! emoticon on holding onto 1st place.
*******
Last night was just blah, only a couple of doubles and one turkey, 3 missed spares, and 3 missed splits, another one in 10th frame of last game. I started to move my feet a board and a half left in that frame because I had been high on the headpin the frame before on that lane, but I didn't. Figured to put a bit more speed on the ball but, of course I slowed it down and hit high for a 4-7-10 split. Lesson learned: Listen to my instincts.

166-189-189 = 544. Held average but team went 0-7. Position round next week. We'll be in the bottom third of the league. emoticon -- Lou

Tuesday league results: 246, 205, and a 193 for a 644 series. Game 3 should have been better, but opened with and closed with a 4-6-10 split and an easy 10 pin miss in the 9th. Good news is that we swept all 4 during position week, so we will still be in 1st place.

Nice 2nd game Patrick!
*******
Last week we also bowled a vacant team (we have 23 teams in our league) and won all 7. More splits and missed spares for 177-157-179 = 513.

Tonight, though, I missed 4 of 5 splits but no spares for 215-184-197 = 596, raised average 4 pins and team won 5 of 7. The frustrating part of tonight was missing a split in the 10th frame of every game. Could have added another 30 pins or so with a spare or strike instead of the splits. Still, to make all of my spares was very satisfying.

Another inconsistent evening last night: 161 233 181 for a 575. Game 1 I could not get the ball to finish plus left 3 easy spares, so changed to the lighter ball in game 2 and was rewarded with a 7 bagger! Game 3 another slow start but finished with a 4 bagger to salvage that game. I'll be practicing with the lighter ball on Friday. My arm is feeling a little fatigued so I think the switch to the lighter ball is the right move.

We bowled against the vacant team (we only have 9 teams this season) and had to post at least a 1018 to "beat" them, which we did for a 4 game sweep. We were in 1st place going in to last night so we will still be there next week.

Leah and Cat, sounds like the three of us are still inconsistent. Like Patrick said, when we miss easy spares our scores go down.

That has been my continuing downfall (and splits) for the past two years and still is troubling me now. The past few weeks have not been good for me and I quit one league because of a personality conflict with a teammate, one I didn't want to bowl with for another 34 weeks. The second and last night of that Thursday league was 9/11 -- 197-159-149 = 505 with 7 missed spares and 4 splits, yet team won all 7. Go figure. emoticon

The next night on Friday league, 9/12 had 214-137-185 = 536 with 5 missed spares and 4 more splits. Team won 5 of 7.

On Friday 9/19 had 174-151-158 = 483 with 5 missed spares and 6 splits. Team was 0-7.

On 9/26 went 164-175-199 = 538 with 6 missed spares and 2 splits. Team was 0-7. But I did raise average a pin. A 149 average teammate picked up the 7-8-9 split!

Just as I thought my problem of turning the ball early thus spinning it and pulling it off line was cured, it's back. All we can do is to try to make as good a shot as possible every time and try to forget the bad shots after they're made.

In addition to try waiting for the ball to roll off my fingers instead of me trying to make the ball hook and turning it early, my new goal is to beat the posted score every week that's needed to increase average a pin.

Never give up! emoticon -- Lou

09/30/2014 results: 216, 169, and a 185 for a 570 series. Started the night with the highest average I've ever been at -- 212 -- and of course that will tumble after those results. Historically my first game has not been my best, but that is what has been happening. Lane conditions did not change much last night, but struggled with the 10 pin again -- I think I was like 2 for 5! Also missed a 7 pin, and when I miss easy spares, the scores come down.

The good news is our team won 3 out of 4 -- should have swept but none of us finished very well at the end of game 3. We were in a 4 way tie for first going in, so worse case we'll be behind a game tops.

Tuesday night league results: 245, 171, and an even 200 for a 616 series.. Could hardly do no wrong in game 1, but the back end dried out very quickly and everyone on both teams struggled in game 2. Game 3 was better, but ended with a 4-7-10 split in the 10th to mess up an otherwise good comeback in game 3.

Team won 3 out of 4 -- should have won all 4, but we lost first game by 1 pin!

Good Morning!
Lou, I am going to try to use your advice Monday... I notice that when I am intentionally trying to slow my first ball down I get the spares, and then I speed up to try and make it and miss the whole thing. BALANCE! I've got to just relax and let the ball DO the work!

Thanks, Lou.
Your middle game is like a couple guys on my league. They are all good bowlers and slump in the middle. I will pass along your friends observation to see if they can use it.
Finally I had a decent week. My avg went from 135 to 143 since I bowled 146,183,176. I'll certainly take that based on how bad I have been bowling.
The key? Mid first game I took out (I had to hunt in the basement for it before leaving) my 1980 straight ball and used it exclusively for the rest of the day. Who'd a thunk?

Leah, I take a pain pill for my back as soon as I get to the center and get a soda to take it with. It kicks in about 2nd game when the back would normally start to cramp. Maybe taking yours then or even as you leave the house might help. As for slick lanes, on those it's best to roll off the corner (right on for right-handers, etc.) and aim straight for the pocket, like a rocket straight and true. Let us know if this helps.
*******
Cat, keep your chin up. We all have bad weeks, sometimes bad years, but with your goal of making each shor the best one you can goes a long way toward better scores. Hang in there.
*******
Last week Thursday was 203-140-173 = 516. Friday was similar: 214-137-185 = 536.

Tonight at dinner with two guys i bowl league with and practice with I told them between two Friday league session and one Thursday that these are the per game averages:

Game 1 = 207
Game 2 = 152
Game 3 = 171

and asked why they thought the second games were filled with missed spares and splits compared to first game. They both said they noticed in practice I start strong (224 last week, only 200 of six of us in game one) but then seem to either let up a bit or get tired and slow my ball down, thus hitting high on the headpin for splits or missed spares as the slightly slower shot hooks by easy spares. Why didn't they say something before now for crying out loud? I didn't ask because I didn't want to put them on the defensive and ruin a nice birthday dinner for one guy's wife.

So my focus tomorrow night will still be to start strong but then to keep the speed up in game two and see if that brings the score up.

We can also learn something, can't we?

Greetings all. I have not posted here for awhile as I have nothing positive to post.
My avg has gone from 153 to 135 in three short weeks. See what I mean? I do not know what my problem is but hopefully I can find and fix it before too much longer.
Good luck to all of you this week.

Lou, I really understood how pain affects me last night. My scores were pretty terrible... 118-107-90. We lost all games and pins. They used last years averages, and mine was 120. I came close, at least, the first game. It went downhill from there. I forgot to take my evening meds until 2 hours after I was supposed to. I really do not like starting bowling at 7:30pm. I believe I will set my alarm so I have to remember to take pills at 8:30pm when I bowl. This is a habit I will have to develop. On the "sort of" good side, NOBODY had good scores last night. It didn't matter how I adjusted... the ball slid down the lanes. No one could get their ball to hook whatsoever. Pins were falling really strange. They didn't make any noise. The whole night was very weird. I may try to go for the penny a pin session this afternoon.
I hope everyone has a good week. My Rheumatologist visit was good. A reprieve of 4 months before more bloodwork. Catch you later!

Hope you feel better soon, Leah. Yes, our bowling often suffers when we're in pain. I've started taking a pain pill for my back before we start practice warmup. Seems to help. Let's hope relief is on the way for you. emoticon

First night of Thursday league was much like last Friday. Started with 203 then started missing spares again for 140 (ugh) and 173 = 516. Need to handle the transition better when the oil pattern changes in games 2 and 3.

Friday league tonight. Concentrating on making spares is the goal!

A little late on my Tuesday league results: 245, 248, and a 231 for a 724 series!!

emoticon

Probably the most consistent set of league scores I have ever thrown. 23 strikes, only one missed spare all evening (and it was a 6-7-10 split!), converted all 5 of my 10 pin spares, etc etc. I was just very fortunate to find a good spot and be able to stay with it all night. One of the things I did differently was to add some speed and some "snap" to my release, so the approach stayed consistent almost every time.

On the team side, we won all 4 and have likely taken over all of the season high score categories, an area we dominated in last year. Should be no worse than in 3rd place in the standings!

And to top it all off, we play a poker game that ties into our bowling -- you get a card for each strike, 9-spare, or a split conversion. In the 3rd game I pulled a royal flush!

Every frame is a new opportunity... emoticon
I was very inconsistent today, but that's nothing new. 115-138-100. I find if I am in pain, I do not bowl well. Period. We'll see what Rheumy doc says tomorrow. No one else was doing too hot, either today, so I don't feel too badly about my scores. The lanes were really strange. Even the great bowlers had low scores.
I am looking forward to Saturday nights first Church League session.
Hope everybody has a good week! I'll touch base on Sunday.

Patrick, Leah, Cat, it is so nice seeing your posts again. Bowling, as with other sports, can elevate us to exhilerating highs and the next shot, game, week drop us to dismaying lows. The goal is to try to make each shot the one we can. It's not going to happen every time but never give up. If the line we're playing isn't working, try some different, move left or right, speed up the ball a bit or slow it down a touch, something other than using the same frustrating line all night.

Patrick, I can relate to your last series. After a mediocre summer league and subbing 7 weeks in another, I decided to join two leagues this year (hoping the budget handles it emoticon ) and started one league last night with a clean first game of 205. But then I started missing simple spares and didn't find the right adjustment finishing with 179 and 156 for 540 = 180 average. Not what I expected but a learning experience. I'll talk with the guys I practice with on Sundays and see what they would have done.

Our team had a first-time league bowler who shot 98-73-89 = 260 = 86.6 average. He needs lots of encouragement so we cheer him on each frame and keep telling him it's okay, he'll get better. But we can only do this face to face because he's deaf. It worked out though so we're hopeful once he gets his ball's thumb hole opened wider at the pro shop next week and can use that instead of a house ball that he'll post higher scores.

Team started 2-5 so at least we won't be shut out this half. emoticon -- Lou

Typically, the house "conditions" the lanes prior to league play, but when it comes to practice time, you are dealing with lanes that have been played on for some time so it is more like game 2 or 3 of league play vs game 1 and fresh conditions. Plus, if it is only you bowling (vs your team plus another team), even though the lane conditions have broken down somewhat, nothing like what happens during league play. So I find that once I find a good spot during practice, I usually don't have to adjust. Having said that, the challenge for me is finding that spot! So in practice I start at the 10th board for my first few frames and see what the ball does, understanding that it normally takes me about 5 frames to get my arm and wrist loose. Once I get to that point, I tend to follow the rule of "miss right, move right" but it all depends. Had I done that last Tuesday, I would have been on the next pair of lanes, so I opted to move left to the 13th board and throw to the 8th board with a bit of crank and it worked out OK. But it is clearly an art and not a science.

I had heard that our house was going to post what oil pattern they were putting down so that we'd have an idea how to approach but I think that was just a bad rumor and they are still keeping it a secret. Not that it would matter...the pros know how to deal with it, but I'd likely be clueless!

emoticon Cat! Every game is a new beginning!
I learned while showing dogs, you lose more than you win unless you are a "pro". I was fortunate to have dogs that won early and finished quick. But that is not the usual scenario for an owner/handler. Good pedigrees and luck were with me... In bowling I am learning there is a lot of luck involved, too, but if you practice you can improve. I'll never be pro material, but I can at least be good enough to have people say "Uh oh! She's competition!" LOL!
I am looking forward to some practice on Sunday. I'll let you guys know how it goes...
Patrick, I think it is great you know how to adjust so you do better! This is my main goal for this year... learn how to adjust my approach so I can hit the pocket more. Reading how the oil is on the lanes is not easy... that's something else I want to work on! Understanding it all will come in time. Not so sure about putting it into practice, though! emoticon

CC, you are really improved this year. All that practice helped. Keep it up.
Patrick, at least you had too good games and were able to come back in the third.
Yesterday I had another disastrous outing. One decent games, two horrible ones.
And, we are still tired for last having won nothing.
I do have encouragement as there are 31 more weeks to improve!

An interesting evening last night: 232, 145, and a 215 for a 592 series. Had a nearly perfect spot in the first game, then just like that, it vanished in game 2, where I had 3 splits, a washout, and other assorted messes! Finally found a new spot at the end of game 2 (moved 4 boards left) and was able to salvage my evening in game 3. We bowled another high handicap team last night and were able to take 3 out of 4. We only ended up with a split last week after that team's average were computed. 300 pins scratch was not enough!

Thanks for the tip, Lou! I always do better when I slow down and focus. I need to memorize to adjust feet/target according to where I miss the headpin.
I ended up in second place, by 2 points. I won't complain because the lady who was first is a great bowler. I won $6. Paid for my bowling fees today. DH won first place, and he got $8. Bowling for the three games is $6, and you get 5 "strikepot" tickets. If your ticket is pulled, you get a dollar for every pin you knock down the next frame you roll. They pull 3 tickets a day. If you pay $2 more, you get 5 "special" tickets that give you an opportunity to bowl for a "super strikepot". They have a special lane set up with red pins(that are NOT like regular pins! LOL!)
They pull 2 tickets during the bowling session for this. I won it one day when it was up to $65. Lucky roll! LOL! DH had one of the strikepot tickets, so he won an additional $9 today, plus another $4 for making spares or striking with colored pins. I won $3. We usually pay $8 each Monday, so we came out a bit ahead today! emoticon
As to my scores, it wasn't too bad. 109-141-111. Not wonderful, but not shabby for me, either. I can live with a 120 average to begin with.
The best thing is I have NO knee pain nor heel pain! emoticon
I'm planning on getting more practice the next few weekends because there is a special being run on Sundays between 1pm and 6pm. A "Penny a Pin" promotion. Should a woman be good enough to have a 180 game, she bowls free that game. I doubt if I will do that, but it shouldn't cost me too much for 3 games.
Hope everyone has a great week!

Cat, I sympathize with your first night. About all you can do is laught and keep believing in yourself and your team. emoticon
*******
Leah, an excellent way to start practice/warmup is to roll whatever ball you're using over your favorite target and adjust from there, typically moving your feet and target to the right if you miss the headpin to the right and to the left if you miss the headpin to the left. Maybe two boards with your feet and target each time as a general rule. Remember, too, that most of us don't get warmed up and roll our shots at normal speed for a few shots -- slower ball = more hook (generally) while faster ball = less hook (usually). Good luck! emoticon

The good thing, Cat, is "This too shall pass!"... whether it is weight/exercise issues or lousy bowling! LOL!
Our organizational meeting was interesting... there are some people who are big time league bowlers who are trying to turn our little fun Church league into a "league" with all the rules and regulations we don't want to deal with. That is why we are a fun league and not sanctioned! DUH! They are trying to get several "positioning rounds" put in, and we only bowl 16 weeks, every other week. They also want to use last years averages to establish this years averages. Stuff I do not understand, and do not care to understand! All I want is to bowl and have fun and fellowship. They also want to raise the fees so we have higher payouts at the end of the year... of course they do! They are who will win the higher prizes! DUH!
I am not bowling for the money!
The free games tonight were good practice for me... I had 137-161-135. I will not complain, although one of the lanes took a huge chunk out of my ball! I just could not find the right spot every time I went up to bowl. There was no curve, although I threw the ball like I usually do. It's like the ball never would "catch" as it went down the lane. No spin at all. It just slid. Is that too much oil on the lane? My ball didn't appear to have any oil on it... Oh, well! I am grateful for the scores I had! With no practice, I felt I did well. I don't like just walking up into the first frame with no idea how the lane is.
Have a great Labor Day holiday!

Sorry to hear of your health issues, CC. Hope you can get that weight gain under control soon as well. My weight has crept up due to some hypothyroid issues and not going to the gym. I am trying to keep it under control and curse every morning when I weigh.
My first league bowling was terrible and my team is tied for last with the team that did show and forfeited. Great.

Cat, I'm sure you can tactfully get the rules in place! Would you believe we have a battle over who will be the treasurer on our Church league? The original person who volunteered would be great. It appears another person wants to do it "for the money". I'm staying out of it...LOL! Since I only actually know one of the women, I will vote for the lady I know, who will do a good job.
We have our organizational meeting tonight. It should be interesting. DH and I are bowling with the same couple we have been with the last 2 years.
My heel is about healed... the stretching exercise my chiro gave me stops the pain cold. it has been fascinating to watch the muscle/tendon(whatever it is called!) loosen in my foot. Unfortunately I have not been back on the treadmill once since it all started. As to the knee, it comes and goes. Last night it was swollen, and after Ben Gay it was OK this AM. I'll wear my brace tonight, just to be safe.
My primary doctor says I need to begin using the treadmill again. She gave me some knee strengthening exercises to do. They are simple, and I hope are working. I go on 9/9 to my rheumy doc, and I will have cervical ex-rays to see if the RA is affecting my spine. I'll tell him about my knee and see if he wants to ex-ray it, too.
In the meantime, I have gained 10 pounds. SIGH. Exercise is definitely the key to my losing(and keeping off) weight. The crazy thing is my BP, cholesterol, bloodwork is the best it has ever been. We even cut my BP med in half. I don't take cholesterol meds, nor do I show signs of diabetes. I just weigh too much and have Rheumatoid Arthritis. The extra weight is not a good thing when you have inflamed joints. The side dose of Lupus does not help, either. But you handle what is dealt to you and do what you can. God IS good, no matter how crazy life is! LOL!
I made it through 11 weeks of Senior Fun Bowling in the Ladies first place. I was 2 points ahead of the other ladies. I think I lost the placement last week when I only gained 2 points. I bowled the worst bowler of the whole bunch, but her handicap got me. It was nice to last 11 weeks! LOL!
We think we are going to go have our balls cleaned before we start the league bowling. It will begin 9/13. We have two weeks to get the cleaning done. Certainly cannot hurt...
Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Got the 2014/15 season off on the right foot. 216, 209 and a 193 for a 618 series. I was especially happy with my 10th frame work -- 29, 28, 29, and marked in the 9th in all 3 games to be able to setup a great 10th!

We bowled a team just establishing their averages, so based on their skill, I figure we had to beat them by 300 pins scratch to win, and we succeeded in that, so hopefully come next week we'll be in 1st with a 4-0 record. But they improved each game so they will be a tougher team the next time we see them in 9 weeks.

Cat, leagues typically have an audit committee of two people who review the treasurer's books, weekly (preferred) or monthly. Also, one of the president's duties is to ensure the books are balanced and all deposits made. If these are not done and there is a theft then USBC bonding may be void. I'd bring up the rule word for word at a meeting and ask for audit committee volunteers, people who have a sense of numbers. -- Lou

The one thing that jumps out to me is we have a gal that doesn't bowl as our sec/treas.
The rules spell out very specifically that the league has to have all officers and the pres has to actually audit the books monthly. None of that happens. We are a small community so things are a bit lax here, but I sure don't like being pres and not knowing about these things before getting drafted into the position. I don't want to upset the status quo or having the liability.
ugh
The rest is minor stuff I can fix next week before bowling, like late arriving bowlers and subs.

Hi all.
Our league meeting was today and we start next Wed.
I am Prez this year and have been reading the USBC rule book. Looks like our little town alley and our league need to all read the rule book.
Looking forward to the season and getting back to regular postings on this team.

We had our league organizational meeting last evening. Looks like maybe 12 teams this year, an increase of 2. This league used to have over 20 teams but many team moved a few years ago to a Monday league that has a much higher prize fund (and is MUCH more competitive). League play starts next Tuesday. Our entire team is back.

One of my teammates and I got in 3 practice games afterwards. Hopefully we can duplicate in league play how we bowled in practice. He had a 692 and I had a 637 (all 200+ games). Only had two blown spares all night...a BIG improvement. It was just nice to have someone to bowl with.

Oh, and still using my heavier ball...

Sad to read of your injuries, Leah, and glad you're feeling good enough to bowl. Good going everyone. Hope you enjoyed Reno, Cat, despite the bowling scores. emoticon Patrick on your outstanding average!

My summer league started poorly until the last four weeks when my average went up eight pins, finishing the league with a 646 and 590 the past two weeks.

Hope to see us all posting more as fall leagues start up again. Meanwhile, be well. -- Lou

emoticon Happy August, everybody! Fall Leagues will begin soon for most of us, I suppose. My Church league has it's formation meeting on August 31. Bowling at Strikers in Rock Hill, SC again this year. Nice lanes and nice people in the pro shop, Bowling Solutions. My DH and I are bowling with the same couple we've bowled with the past two years. We have lots of fun, and that's what counts.
As to the Senior Fun League on Mondays, we are still going every week. I've made friends with my Karma, and am averaging at least 125 most weeks. I am in first place for women, as we enter the 9th week. We go 12 weeks each session, so there may be a miracle will occur if I stay in this position... Good luck, not skill....LOL!
I've had a rough summer with my heel and knee, but I have learned of the benefit of a good knee brace and a great Chiropractor! My "injuries" made me slow down and really concentrate on what I am doing, which is a great gift. I may become a decent bowler after all!
Will be more regular at posting when the Church league begins.

...and I made it back to the 50 cent "Bowl For Freedom" deal at my local house (All bowling proceeds go to America's Veterans). 790 series over 4 games, with a nice finishing 223 game.

With the 2014/15 season starting in a month, today was a perfect day to get in some practice. I'm running a 10K race tomorrow so was looking to do some less strenuous activities today, and bowling was the ideal choice.

144, 166 and an even 200 for a 510 practice series. Game 1 was all about finding a spot, testing speed, etc. Game 2 and 3 concentrated on form, etc. My "nemesis" pin today was the 4 pin! At least 4 blown spares with that pin!

All in all, not a bad practice session. Next week on Friday they are having a special -- 50 cents a line!! Am planning to be there!

Guess I should confess that I bowled horribly in Reno. Out of nine games I bowled my avg (just over) four games and the other five I bowled between 25-30 below. That's each game that much below.
Last year our team and I did great and this year we bombed.
So go the pins!
At least the trip and the experience were good and I'm still glad I again participated.

Hello all. I have been absent on this team for months. No real reason as I always enjoy hearing of your successes (and not such great play).
Our league season ended a month ago and my team came in 4th out of 10. Okay.
My avg increased from a poor beginning at 142 to 153, where it should have been all along.
This was a strange season for me.

I have been going every other Tues to a lanes some 45 miles from my house to plan Sr no tap. It's always enjoyable and I win a few dollars about half the time. Even the drive over and back is pleasant although costly with the gas prices.

I am also on a spring league that is spread out over Western WA. The finals are in two tiers and in another town. It's always fun.

Heading to Reno to bowl in the Open in a few weeks. This will be my third trip and I am looking forward to it. Our team last year came in 189th out of some 2400+ teams in our division. I am proud of that.
If anyone is interested in watching the USBC webcam I will be in the 3pm team play on June 17th. Don't know what lanes yet so you'll have to search. Team name is Pin Busters.

My plan is post here more often and catch up with you all. emoticon

Payoff night last evening -- no bowling for us, but the 1st place teams from each half had a roll off to crown a season champ. Hopefully next year we'll be in that roll off! Did pocket close to $300 though. Finished with a 196 average, a PR! Will give some thought to a new ball during the summer. But for now the bag goes to the basement for summer hibernation.

Chat with you all in late July...

Very exciting night last evening to wrap up the 2013/14 season. My first game was an extension of last week's miserable finish - a 155! Did something after that game that I rarely (if ever!) do - I switched balls! The one I switched to is my lighter ball, and then the fun began -- 201 and a 236 for a 592 series!

Team-wise, we were in 2nd place going into last night's league play, so we bowled the 1st place team. They had already clinched first place, but the 3rd place team was just one game behind us. But we rose to the occasion, sweeping the 4 games from the 1st place team, which was good b/c the 3rd place team did the same, so we finished the season in 2nd place! Next Tuesday is payouts, so we should do pretty good.

A great way to finish the season!

OK, so this week I decided not to practice before league play. Results: 247, 216 and a stinking 154 for 617 series. The spot I had in games 1 and 2 just vanished! And our team continued its downward spiral, dropping 3 out of 4! One more week and then we are done for the season. Can't get here fast enough! Hopefully we'll still be in 2nd place going into next week's position round.

Tuesday evening results: 168 (BLAH!), 234 (YEA!), and a 179 (HMMMM!) for a 581 series. Yep, all over the place! Could not find a decent spot in game 1 plus some easy missed spares cost me. Game 2: found the spot! Game 3: where did the spot go?? Thankfully I found it in the 8th. I was at a whooping 99 through 7, 10 pin spare in the 8th, then punched out to salvage the game. Team-wise, we split, though we pulled off another Houdini act by rallying from 47 pins down in the 10th of game 3 to gain the split. 3 of of the 5 of us struck out in the 10th to reel in the win.

That game three must have been an exciting one, Patrick. Good news that your team is still hanging close to first place.
*******
I have been involved in a book edit for the past month and apologize for not posting sooner. Scores have increased somewhat with a newer ball and working on timing -- starting the ball in motion sooner -- but I am still missing simple spares, often one pin ones. Converting those with more concentration on those shots will be a priority the last few weeks and this summer.

Last four weeks:

4/25: 194-192-179 = 565, raised average a pin. Team = 4-3, in the middle of the standings.

4/18: 158-219-188 = 565. Team 7-0.

4/11: 166-168-167 = 501. Team 5-2.

4/4: 172-159-150 = 481, dropped average a pin. Team 7-0.
********
The league I bowled in for several years until this year is moving to the current center I bowl in because Bowlmor/AMF is closing Semoran lanes here in Orlando (and a sister center in the county north of this one) after the last night of league. The payout/summer meeting will be the next week at the new center for the league. It'll bowl there through the fall on Thursdays. I'd like to rejoin it but don't want to bowl on consecutive Thursday and Friday nights. Maybe rejoin it for this summer since the current league does not bowl in summer and then see how things are in the fall.
*******
Be well. Don't forget the two games that have been started and let me know if you think of others we can try. Thanks. -- Lou

emoticon TAMUTPOT!

Tough night last evening. My scores: 215, 195, 169 for a 579 series. Oil really started to break down late in the 2nd game and the 3rd game I was clueless on where to throw! Team fared no better, dropping all 4 to the team we were tied for 1st place with! Not bowling next week as DW and I have a dinner to go to (her work), so hopefully my sub can help get the team back on track!

Last Sunday went well for me. I think I finally got used to my ACL brace. I bowled a 166, 219 and 218, for a 603. I was pretty excited. I even won some bracket money!

Last evening's league play: 182, 185, and a 214 (clean game) for a 581 series. 10 ping gave me trouble in games 1 and 2. Finally started converting them in game 3.

Speaking of game, lots of excitement and drama. Team lost game 1 by 35, won by 50 in game 2, so all we needed to do was win game 3 to capture 3 out of 4. Things were not going well, though. Other team had a couple hot bowlers and we found ourselves down by 60 going into the 10th. Well, we pulled one out, getting 129 pins in the 10th while the other team collapsed like a house of cards! We heard that the first place team lost 3 out of 4, so we should either be tied or be in first place going into next week!
