Wow, all three of us had trouble our first game. Let's do better. emoticon

Good news that our teams are winning games. emoticon

Happy development for me -- got message today that secretary has a couple to fill out our team instead of the beginner and a vacancy. Don't know there averages but the camaraderie between the two of them should make it easier for all of us to get along. emoticon

Not bad, Patrick.
CC, are you bowling these days?
Today was okay for me. I also had a clueless first game 134, and our team lost that one (we had to spot them 140). Came back with a 209 and finished with a 161. Team also won these two games and we took total.

Last evening's league scores: 135 (YIPES!!), 204, and a 202 for a 541 series. I was clueless in game 1! Finally found a good spot towards the end of game 1, and at least recovered some.

Team-wise -- we split.

Sounds like you may regret making the financial sacrifice to bowl since you have a newbie and one that doesn't seem to be up for suggestions.
Whenever I bowl against people like that I don't interact with them and stay off the seating area because if I don't I start watching them bowl and it turns my game to crap.
Good luck is all I can say, Lou.

Not as good an opening night as I hoped as I rejoined a league from last year last night to begin the 2nd half -- 151-205-161 = 517 series = 172.3 average. Team won all 7 points from the blind team and I made all of my 10-pins. Only had two missed spares but several splits or washouts, Game 3 was clean through the 7th frame then split, split, split with no conversions to finish the game.

After telling the secretary when she asked me to bowl that I didn't want to bowl with beginners, she brought a woman to my teammate and I and said she was joining us starting next week. No shoes of her own. No ball of her own. Never bowled before. What was I to say with her standing there? The past two years I bowled with two different beginning bowlers whose scores might be 73 one game, 108, then 82. And we know she will not likely improve much, but there is hope. Guess I'll be coaching her for 16 weeks.

About that, my teammate, a 138 average bowler, lefty, kept missing the head-pin to the left. Her ball wasn't hooking enough but she was playing between 2nd and 3rd arrow. There was heavy oil on the lanes especially since we were the only two bowling on them. I asked if she thought it might be a good idea to move her feet a couple of boards to her left (when she was going to shoot a washout on her 10th frame fill ball) to see if her ball would hook more. She refused because her instructor didn't tell her to do that. So she rolled her ball and it barely hit the head-pin which went around the 3 and 6 pins. A slight adjustment and she might have picked up those two pins or even maybe make the spare.

No coaching for her it looks like.

But we will be in 1st for at least one week! emoticon

A surprise, the first refi fell through over $410.00 appraisal that I wanted deducted at closing but the credit union didn't, and they wouldn't tell me why all of the appraisors on their "approved" list all charged the same. Seems at least one would be different.

Anyway, I've worked out to bowl 2nd half of Friday night league I bowled the last two years starting tomorrow.

My grand plan of getting instruction and videotape hasn't happened as much as I had hoped so we'll see how tomorrow goes.

What a pleasant surprise for you, Patrick. Great scores.
Sorry, Lou. Hang in there.
Today my team lost two games and total pins (by 20) and I had an down, up, down series with 150,194,150.

I wasn't supposed to bowl in league play last night -- originally was supposed to be in Austin, TX, but the trip was cancelled due to Jonas, but since I had lined up a sub, still planned to take the night off, but when one of my teammates texted me asking to find a sub for him, and not finding anyone else to help out, I did the right thing and bowled last evening. The results: 215, 189, and a 260 for a 664 series!!! 20 strikes, 13 spares and only one open frame -- a 4-6-7-10 split in the middle of game 2! Finished game 3 with 8 straight strikes! Now that is the way to end an evening!

The only downer is that we only won 1 out of 4 as a team.

The elbow is pretty sore again today so no practice this week. Worked out fine this past week!

Still on the fence about joining a league this Friday night for the 2nd half. May have a procedure on my back soon that possibly could lay me up for a while. Two days to decide.

It looks like the house refinance will go through. Working on one sticking point. Not sure how soon closing can be. This would pay for league for the half.

Drug and medical appointment increased co-pays have cost $315.00 so far this month. The refi is the only way I can pay for bowling so keep fingers crossed that it happens soon. Thanks.

Thought I could bowl 2nd half in a league where there is an opening but with health insurance drug prices skyrocketing ($225.00 so far this month), car insurance increasing, telephone/Internet cost up, homeowner insurance increased, doctor co-pays doubling (have 3 appointments every month), etc., it doesn't look like I'll be able to afford league. Don't know when the house refinance will close. The cash from that will let me join. So just weekly practice for now. Darn. emoticon

That is a lot of pins to give away. All it takes for the other team to win is to have a bowler or two bowl over average and the pinfall you need to overcome becomes like a high mountain. Keep plugging away; things can change quickly for the better.

Yes, Gemfire, good series.
Patrick, have a great trip and rest that arm.
Wed I bowled slightly better than the last few weeks. 162,157,132. Worse, my team lost all games. It is difficult to win when you have to spot the other team 135 pins per game!

Another meandering adventure last evening. Started OK with a 189, then the floor just fell out and I struggled to get a 133 in game 2, but thankfully hung in there and finished with a 206 for a 528 series. Team won 3 out 4 - that ALWAYS makes me happy. I'm on a business trip next week (Austin, TX) so taking a break from league play. Elbow is a little more sore than normal so the timing I think is good. Won't practice this Friday to let it heal.

Ugh! Those pocket 7-10s are horrible! I'm bowling two leagues this season. One is a fun mixed league and the other is a more competitive scratch league. Luckily that 127 game was not bowled during the scratch league! For that league, I bowled 202, 201, 197 for a 600 even. How's that for consistency!

Oh, and I'm bowling in Everett, Washington.

I was talking in general about slower speed and the ball coming in high. I've had those pocket 7-10 splits, too. They don't seem fair since we hit the pocket. But what can we do but get one of the pins and carry on?

Lou, I am willing to take the blame for a slower ball, etc., but at our lanes last week, not only did I get victimized by an untimely and unwarranted 7-10 split, but two other bowlers on my pair had the same thing happened! And none of us put it through the heart! All the same -- looked like great pocket hits, and the 7-10 just stood there! I'm sure there is a logical explanation, but that just hurts!

emoticon for posting. Where do you bowl? What type of league? Don't you just hate splits, especially when they're in the 10th frame? Drives me crazy.

Most often it is because we slow our ball down a bit without realizing it and it hooks onto the nose or the lanes have dried out some and we don't adjust so the lanes hook more thus more splits as we again hit high or on the nose.

Cheering you on for a more consistent night next time. emoticon

I wasn't very consistent last night. Started with a 200, struggled with splits the second game for a whopping 127, then finally made the right adjustment and ended with a 208. I've been struggling all season. Sigh.

Good idea, Cat. A few weeks ago Patrick was running out of energy the last game and we talked about keeping a protein bar in his bowling bag or eat something when he gets to the center. Maybe that will help you, too. ~~ Lou

WTG Patrick.
I have had two less than good weeks with one decent game and two miserable ones each week.
Seems I may have identified a possible issue. Nutrition. I need to eat more than a protein bar and pot of coffee with 1000 mg Tylenol for my lunch.
Next week I will eat!

Last night was another adventure: 189, 225, and 187 for a 601 series. Always happy for a 600 series, but as always, it should have been better:

Game 1: All spare game except for the 12th when I FINALLY got a strike! Also converted at 4-7-10 split to start the game!

Game 2: On my game! Lots of strikes, all mark game!

Game 3: 1st half was awesome -- 125 after 5, then slumped in the 2nd half. Victimized with another 7-10 split in the 9th on a solid pocket hit!

The other good thing for me is I converted ALL of my cross lane spares last night!

Team wide, tough night. Lost game 1 by 116 pins, game 2 by 25, but won game 3 by over 100 pins but not enough to get series.

Well, always next week! Will get in some practice on Friday (I am off work that day!).

Rough night last evening -- 508 series. Another one of those nights where I could not find a good spot, and still not in sync with my spare ball. More practice needed.

Team did not fare much better -- only won 1 out of 4. Thankfully there is always next week!

Practiced five games with the guys today, my first outing since Nove. 19 last year. Started slow as back loosened up then had three consistent games:

158-160-203-204-213 = 938 = 187.6 average. Still working on the budget to see if I can afford to bowl some league's second half. Remembered a couple of things from the past to use today ~~ for me, keep shoulders up and back during the approach, and swing my trailing leg more behind me to open the hips at delivery. Helped the last three games.

Hope you all have a good week and bowl well. emoticon

If we refuse to try something new with our game, we often miss out on learning something that might make us better, like Patrick did for 10-pins.

Man, Patrick, I so relate to your 144 game and back pain. I was bowling too many of those, driving home angry and frustrated every week. That's why I needed a mental and physical break. In a couple of weeks I'll get injections that will be nerve block to try to eliminate right side back and leg pain ~ the leg constantly feels as if it is on fire. So, yeah, I feel your disappointment with that game after two good ones. Hope the chiropractor helps.

Cat, why is it some nights the pins fall down easily but other nights they seem glued to the floor? Those nights where the ball has a mind of it's own going here when we wanted it to go there are confusing, aren't they?

Hang in there. emoticon

I'm trying to work the budget to join a league on the 29th for the second half. Insurance co-pays for doctors doubled and several medications went up to a more expensive level. I won't know how they'll cost me until January's refills are ordered. I'm hoping I can figure it out somehow. Going to practice tomorrow and see who else shows up.

Thanks for posting. Don't forget to post answers to our team games. emoticon

The alleys opened up early today (normal opening time on Friday is 4PM!) so got a nice practice session in today. 198 and 180 in my "normal" games, then used game 3 to work on cross lane spares. I think I found a better spot for me to stand -- on the 20th board (center) vs all the way to the left. I was able to cover the 10 pin with much better consistently from there, so that will be the game plan for league play next Tuesday.

Happy New Year!!

Patrick, I feel your pain.
We are in second place and played last place team. Lost two games and total to them because I bowled a 384 series. Good grief. I have no idea what was wrong but I could not get a strike or a spare half the time. Talk about wheels coming off.
Next week..............
Happy New Year everyone.

Tuesday night league play: Started well with a 200, then a 224, feeling good, and then after opening game 3 with two straight strikes, the proverbial wheels came off and finished with a disappointing 144 for a 568 series. I honestly think I injured myself, as I was in severe pain in my upper right part of my back yesterday, and had to go see the chiropractor! No idea what I did, but I bowled like crap in game 3. Sigh!

Team did no better, losing all 4 to our high handicap team. Our leadoff bowler barely broke 400, #3 bowler not much better, and of course my game 3 did not help either. Oh well, always next week!

Cat, seems like you just ran out of energy as the night went on. How're you feeling? emoticon

Did anyone watch the Pro Bowlers tournament on ESPN last night? Gary Faulkner, who bowls in leagues here in Orlando when he's not bowling tournaments, won it. His first title and a major one. Oh, he's a friendly, approachable guy. What an accomplishment! emoticon

WTG, Patrick. Picking up spares is the name of the game.
Yesterday was first half position rounds. We went in in second place and came out in third - because of me!
I lost it yesterday. After bowling so good for weeks now and thinking I finally got my mojo back after my cancer treatments, I just lost it. And, the team lost two games and total. We did have to spot the other team 98 points per game which didn't help.
I rolled a sad 164,132,113....... emoticon

MARLY1414, I got s Brunswick TZone plastic ball. Once I got some quality practice time with it, it works like a champ! I converted all of my cross lane spares on Tuesday during league play!

Speaking of which: 216, 175, and a excellent 239 for a 630 series! I love finishing the night on a high note! Team wise...won 3 out of 4 to close out the first half tied for 3rd place!

PLMITCH--what did you get for your new spare ball? I've been googling for a new ball, but on the bowling sites they're listed as performance balls, entry performance, and my son said I needed a polyurethane ball. We bowled against my son's team last night. He started out with his usual strikes in practice, but his games weren't as good as what he wanted. They had a sub with a 207 average. I allowed my old Rhino to have more "hook" on the lanes, and was surprised to pick up more spares. I even got 3 10-pin spares. My problem with that is, I like having my targets to look at, and I have no idea. I look at pins, throw the ball, and wonder where is the ball going to hit? We took 3 out of 4 games, lost first game by 18 pins. My ave is only 114, I bowled 119, 131 and 159. Oh, my last game I had only 2 open frames....rest were spare frames.

Got in some practice yesterday, especially working with new spare ball. Pretty much know what I need to do on cross lane spares now. Just need to see if that translates to spares when it counts. First two games were "normal" bowling -- 409 series, then game 3 dedicated to working on cross lane spares.

Just got our most up to date league standings. Team is at 32-32, solidly in 4th place, and playing the same team we just swept in position round next Tuesday. We are two games behind them so we have a chance to move into 3rd place! Sadly, I won't be there -- I have a dinner to go to that evening with my wife for her work. But my sub is a very capable bowler and will no doubt help the team!

Oh, and my average has snuck up to 185...

last evening's league play scores: 222, 201, and a 193 for a 616 series. As always, should have been better. Still not quite there with the plastic spare ball, but it's coming. No marks in games 2 and 3 in the 10th frame -- not happy about that. Relatively easy spares that I just did not convert.

On the team side, another 4 game sweep for us!! WooHoo! We're on a nice roll!

emoticon on an improved series, Leah. Often, when lanes are heavily oiled, it's best to shoot off the corner toward the pocket with a slower speed. Hope the tests prove okay. Keep doing your best. emoticon ~~ Lou
