I was in the mood for one of my marathons last night... bowled 6 games straight. Best game was the last 158... the rest were in the 120's, so I was good with it.

emoticon Patrick! You had a good season! One day I'm going to have a 188 average! I think you are wise to ask opinions on which bowling ball to get. I am looking forward to my new one.
I'm going bowling tonight!

Last evening was our prize fund night. Finished in 4th place for the 2nd half of the season and a total of 73 wins. We also took top honors for team high game scratch and series (only get paid for one, though). I finished the season with a 188 average.

Going to consult with my teammates and the pro shop on the next ball to get. One of my teammates thinks there is a particular ball that would really improve my scores -- honestly, I don't remember the name of it, but it is yellow or gold. All I do know is that it really finishes strong. More to follow as I get info...

Slow is better than lousy, Lou! LOL!
Today was OK. 122-126-110. More consistent. I have busy week at work(YAY!), so I may not get any bowling practice in until Saturday.
Next Sunday is last 8X8, and No-Tap starts 24th.

Another slow start Thursday: 167-218-200 = 585, raised average a pin. Team won all 7 while 1st place lost 5 so going into this week's last night position round we are in 2nd, 2 points out. So if we win all three games, or 2 games and series, we win this half. Bad thing is that we'll be spotting the other team about 200 pins a game. -- Lou

There was no consistency today... 170-118-99. I was tired to begin with, and it went downhill from there... Tomorrow is another day!

Another good practice tonight: 209-231-222-247-168 = 1077 = 215.4 average.

We had to move lanes after game two because, even though the entire center was empty, the manager put beginning bowlers on a lane next to us. They immediately started not waiting for us to bowl but running up on the lane right next to which one of us was on the lane next to them. When we complained to the manager he said, "That was the lane they wanted." What the heck? Your regular league bowlers don't count? So we moved lanes to get away from them.

emoticon Patrick! Let us know what type of new ball you decide on, and why...
When we went for our Senior league Monday afternoon, the lady who set up the 8x8 league wanted to be sure she had my info correct for my new ball. Both of the men who bowl on our team wanted to know why I ordered a 10# ball... they said I needed a 12#, and I would stop leaving the one pin, as I have been doing, if I got a heavier ball. So, the new ball will be a 12#. These men are excellent bowlers(one has bowled 64 years, and usually has a 250-280 score consistently) and have helped me tremendously. I am going to trust their judgement and see what happens... I bowled 140-138-113 Monday. The last game I was worn out... my ankles were aching pretty bad(as well as the rest of my body).
I have an appointment with rheumy doc on Monday morning(5/13). The all-over pain is not acceptable, although I may have to live with it. We shall see!
I'm planning on going bowling Friday night...

Nice way to finish the season last evening: 274, 197, and a 201 for a 672 series! 1st game and series were my best of the season. Only blemishes in game 1 was in the 7th (2-4-5 spare) and the 12th (left 3 pins standing). Game 2, while not as high as I would have liked, was an all mark game, and in fact my only open all night was in the 3rd frame of the 3rd game!

Team won 3 out of 4 on position night and moved into 4th place for the 2nd half!

Next Tuesday: MONEY!!

emoticon

Both glad and sad to see the season end. Planning to invest some of my winnings in a new ball -- my teammates have some ideas on what I should get.

I must have learned something... scores today were 134-117-160.
There was a clear difference between the left lane and the right lane today. I am thinking the left had more oil... at practice, I threw my Karma on the left side first, and I followed through, and it went straight, then veered to the right, and I left one pin. Got it with my T-Zone. On the right, I had a strike with the Karma. Kept happening like that the first half of the first game. Since the T-Zone was hitting right where I wanted it when I delivered it correctly, I stopped using the Karma. Others who had the performance balls on these lanes did almost the exact same thing. They switched to their plastic balls on the left lane, too.
Could it have been the oil? Or were we all "off" the same? LOL!
I figured out about where to stand, and my target. Tomorrow I am really going to concentrate and pay closer attention to where I stand and how the balls seem to be going. Today, I was having fun, and one of my teammates has mental challenges, so it was more cheering for her, and helping her than focusing on my game. When I was able to focus, I bowled AWESOME! So I cannot wait to see how I do tomorrow when I am with my "real" league...
DH is helping a young man with cerebral palsy to bowl better, and the kid is really improving! Each week, he is figuring out how to stand solidly and get the ball going straight. He is now scoring 69-72 pins a game... up from 20 -35 pins a game. In helping him, DH is actually doing better himself! God IS so good!!!!
I'm SO excited! Bowling has been one of the best things we've ever done!

Today was interesting... the three main Pro's we learned from were Jason Sterner, Johnny Petraglia and Chris McSwain. They spent a good bit of time with us. So did Chuck Gardner and his son. DH was royally confused after three hours of throwing bowling balls... I picked up some pointers, but I am not a hook bowler, and most of these guys only throw curved balls. My coach was there, too, and he said I have improved greatly, and to just keep practicing on my follow through. I am going the right direction. My RA causes me to make some adjustments, as my balance is far from perfect. I feel more confident after today, and the more I work on my follow through, the better I will get. I'm going to make an appointment to be coached by one of the Pro's who throws more of a straight ball in the next few weeks. My hands tend to get sticky, and I can get a "liner"(?) for my thumb hole that will keep it from sticking so much. We tweaked the holes in both of my balls, so they fit even better now.
Over all, I was very pleased, and I had a blast! I like the no scoring, open ball practice... There were 4 of us using the two lanes, so I could throw and throw and throw. Cool!
We'll see if I learned anything tomorrow...LOL!

I guess the "lanes" won last night, Lou! Do the lanes usually get that out of whack very often? Does it have to do with how many bowlers use it?
I'm beginning to understand about counting the boards to the left or right, and how that gives me some direction. The more I bowl, the more I learn!

Rough night tonight. No oil on lanes to the right of the 4th arrow. Don't know why the right half of the lanes had no conditioner but it made it hard to be consistent. Team lost game 1 by 130 pins, won the next two games and came within 23 pins of taking series. The 4 of 7 points puts us in 2nd place, 7 points out of first with two weeks to go. Me: 155-184-194 = 533, dropped a pin in average. -- Lou

Patrick, you may feel you are off, but I think you did great!! Glad the team did well.
Lou, you had good scores, too!
DH and I went last night and practiced. He bowled highest yet 130 -173-175. He has a new plastic ball, and it is a pound lighter. He says he feels he has more control. It was obvious he did! I couldn't seem to find a good spot until the last game. I was 107-115-147. This was at the lanes where we bowl for Church league. We won't be going there too often during the summer, now that the league is over.
Looking forward to the exhibition Saturday...

I think the No Tap will be a great way for us to get into the league "frame of mind" and keep up our skills over the summer.
I am still in awe that I bowled a 191 yesterday! 122-191-148 for 461. That will ruin my handicap...LOL!
I feel like I am finally getting a grasp on what I need to do to bowl well. DH has promised me a new bowling ball carrier if I bowl three 150 games or better(in a row...he seems to think he won't have to pay up soon, LOL!). I used my Karma yesterday for my strike ball, then the T-Zone for spares.
When I throw the Karma, from my usual approach spot, I seem to curve to the right a bit. Every time. So, I adjusted accordingly. I played two games before league yesterday, and I got a feel for the Karma. I threw my T-Zone straight as an arrow. It worked.
The Pro Shop, Bowling Solutions, at our favorite spot, Liberty Lanes, is having a Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday. There will be 11 Pro's doing trick shots, and will do on lane coaching. It was only $10 a person. DH and I are looking forward to it. My DH's dad bowled with the owner of the lanes, George Pappas, for many years in tournaments. George hasn't watched me bowl since my very beginning in July. I hope to surprise him by my improvement! LOL! He thought I was crazy when I bowled 11 games at a time, but it has paid off!!!
My goal now is to be consistent. DH is going to have to cough up that carrier MUCH sooner than he thinks! I believe I am ready for another lesson. My coach will be there Saturday, too.
Sunday, at George's other lanes in Mooresville, Pete Weber and other Pro's are having some sort of tournament/exhibition. We have 8x8 league Sunday. If I can get DH to pre-bowl Friday night, I want to go watch Sunday. I haven't lost any motivation, and don't want to! LOL!
Hope everyone has a great week!

Leah, No-Taps are fun! Get a strike and it counts as a strike; get nine pins and it too counts as a strike. Anything else you shoot at the spare as usual. Too bad league isn't like that. emoticon -- Lou

Today was a very good learning experience! I've been reading the newsletters from Bowlingball.com, and some of the tips have helped me a lot. I've been noticing exactly where I place my feet on my approach. I'm getting low enough that when I release the ball, it is close to the foul line, and my ball makes a smooth roll down the lane, almost silent. I can focus on my mark and keep my eyes on it until after I release the ball. I am following through. I decided to bowl one game before the league today. I took my Karma with me, as I haven't used it since I got the new T-Zone. I took note of every shot. My score wasn't very high, a 124, but for me it was a good score! The first frame, I established where to stand, I was throwing the Karma, and it wanted to go a bit to the right. The second frame, I compensated two boards, STRIKE! Third frame, my follow through was off, so I left a pin. Used the T-Zone, and spared it. I had a few balls where I threw across myself... By the end of that game, I had an idea how I needed to stand. During the league bowling, I made mistakes, but I kept to my marks and bowled 115-134-118. I was not unhappy with myself at all! I saw what happens if I raise my eyes up a bit before releasing the ball. I saw how not standing in the same spot exactly makes a difference. Everything is slowly coming together! 'Bout time! LOL! There is some consistancy beginning to appear. I look forward to tomorrow's Senior Fun Bowling.
Another thing, we are going to bowl in a No-Tap Mixed Doubles league for the summer on Friday nights. Since we are just beginning, we will be 9-Pin bowlers...??? We'll have an average from the 8X8 league... there are 24 games we'll have bowled... Flyer says if we have no "yearbook" average, we bowl 9-Pins.
Have any of you done this before? Best way to learn is to jump in! LOL! I figure it will help me be a better bowler, especially for our Church fall league.

Last night was a learning experience... I didn't realize there was real $$ involved...LOL! When we bowled the last session, we were in 2nd overall. That last night changed everything! We ended up 5th... there were 2 points difference between each placement...6th place up to 1st place overall... Very weird! But our team won $250... nice surprise! DH and I agreed to put that money back to help pay for next year's season. I want to pay it all at the first meeting in August. Yep! We ARE doing it again. The couple we bowl with said they had already signed us up! LOL! The money was a sweet surprise, but the fun and fellowship is worth far more than any prize!
Today we have our 8x8. I am going to give it my best!
Hope everyone's weekend is going great, so far!

I don't blame you, Leah, for not patronizing such a center, especially at that price. At least now you know what to expect there. Good going on staying consistent. Wasn't too long ago you weren't bowling in the 100s.
*******
Patrick, I've been thinking of doing the same thing -- buying new bowling shoes if we have enough prize money. We may bowl a second league this summer as we did last year and if I have enough prize money to pay for the entire second league at once (the only way I can afford another league), then I'll have to see how much is left over. But I'm way overdue for a new pair.
*******
Another good night on the lanes: 245-212-214 = 671 to raise average ,6 of a pin. The last seven weeks, 21 games, the average has been 213.6. This good bowling lately since I got my timing and confidence back is why I am eager for summer league to begin. It will be nice to start with a higher average and not digging an early hole for myself.

Team started in third place, two points out of first. Won 5 of 7 tonight. Not sure what first and second place did but the worse we can be is four points behind first place with three games to go. -- Lou

New shoes, Patrick! emoticon That is a good investment of your league winnings!
We went to the "BowlNBounce" near the house... it is a bowling alley wanna be... No sound buffers, lousy oil pattern(if there is even one to begin with) and expensive... at $5 a game, I think it is expensive... I worked late, and just wanted to get out and bowl. Our usual lanes are too far away to go to after 7:30pm. After one game, my head hurts, and concentration is nil. The noise is deafening... Oil literally drips off the balls. If you bowl well here, you ARE a good bowler! DH had 105-112-130. I had 102-105-115. I found my mark and was just not following through. I doubt if we will ever go back there, unless I need to practice dealing with distractions and mind numbing noise. The day may come hwen I will need to learn to bowl in noise, etc. But not right now! LOL! Three games was more than enough...
League banquet is Saturday night...

Last evening: 176, 199, and a 172 for a 547 series. Team won all 4. Weird night for me. Found my spot early on, but mechanics and concentration were a little lacking. Really can't blame the lanes for the scores. Just two weeks left in the season. Really am looking forward to the summer break. I am thinking I'll use some of my prize money to buy new shoes. My current ones are starting to show their age (not to mention they are really stretched out from when my weight was much higher).

After last Thursday we ended up in 3rd with four weeks to go, counting this one. With 7 points up for grabs each week, here are the wins for the first 8 teams:
61, 60, 59, 58, 56, 56, 54, 54. Plus several more bunched up after that. This is the closest this many teams have been to 1st in a long time. Some of the teams in that group bowl each other this week so things should keep being interesting.

Had an up and down practice Sunday for 6 games with high game of 247 and low of 158 (first one with no warm up), for 195 average. Looking forward to Thursday. -- Lou

I don't feel so bad about yesterday... DH bowled today and said the lanes were so bone dry, no one scored much of anything. The lanes hadn't been oiled since Friday night...

The 8x8 is today... I hope I can keep up my decent streak of throwing a good ball... I AM getting more consistant! I've figured out my target, and my ball speed is coming down. Now to be consistant on following through, and getting it "straight" off my fingers... My approach is much smoother. I'm not tossing the ball anymore! emoticon
Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday, and is able to renew the spirit within!

Last night's practice helped me know which ball to use tonight. 203-230-235 = 668, raised average another pin. Team went 3-4 and stayed two points out of first.

As a director of our local bowling association, one of my duties is to present honor score awards wearing either one of our white or red association shirts with an embroidered logo on it. Tonight was the fourth time I've presented awards to my league members while wearing the red shirt. For those four times bowling my average is 219+. Must be my lucky shirt. emoticon -- Lou

Nice consistency, Patrick. Isn't it really frustrating missing easy spares? Are you taking the summer off again?
*******
Joining a summer league is a wise choice, Leah. The weekly obligation will ensure that you at least get those three games in if you're not able to practice. Maybe you want to look into renting a locker so you can leave your bowling stuff locked up at the center. It will be a quick stop since it's only a block away if you want to go to another center for a lesson or practice.
*******
Another long Wednesday night practice. Took two games to get timing back and figure out which of four balls emoticon I use would work best on the fresh oil -- a good lesson for tomorrow night's league so I don't waste a game or two trying to figure it out. Six weeks to go; we're tied for 2nd, two points from 1st and we bowl the team tied with us. Will be a big night if we can take 5 or 7 points.

Tonight's practice: 173-161-225-192-210-215 = 1176, a 196 ave. -- Lou

Not a bad night last night, but could have been so much better: 204, 187, and a 196 for a 587 series. A few too many easy spares missed that could have made it in to the 600's with no trouble. Hope to get some practice in this week.

Team struggled -- lost all 4!

3 weeks left in the season. Not our best, but we should get an OK payout.

Scores for Senior Fun League... 130-157-132. Not bad, for me! The new 12 week session began yesterday. My average was 139, and the handicap is 48. I've got to miss next Monday, due to a workshop I have to attend. Isn't is amazing that I now try to schedule things around exercise...LOL! If there was a way to change the workshop, I would!

Scores for the 8X8: 96-130-116. Not spectacular... the whole first game I felt like the ball weighed a ton... my wrist hurt, and when I would pick the ball up, it was wet with oil. By the end of the third game, I had used 2 cloths, and they were soaked with oil. I asked why the lanes were so oily, and I was told that because there was a regional family tournament, the lanes were over-oiled. Were they ever!!! The front of my shirt was black and oily. Weird.
But it was fun, anyway! We chose the new ball we wanted to receive at the end of the league. It will cost $10 to get it drilled. Not too bad a deal. I chose a T-Zone, 10#. Very pale blue. Something different.
Today is the senior fun bowling. Looking forward to it...
Hope everybody has a great week!

I bowled pretty well tonight... 138-130-118. Our team won the last two games, and lost the total pins by 18 pins. We are second overall. One more Saturday left to bowl.
I go tomorrow for my first 8X8 League games where I am with my team. We didn't meet on Easter, and I didn't make it to the first meeting. I did bowl my three games later that afternoon.
It should be interesting!
DH and I were asked to bowl again in the Fall with the Church group. I think we will do it. It's been a lot of fun!
Gee! I get to bowl three days in a row this week! COOL!
Hope everybody has a nice Sunday!

Last six weeks have averaged 207, last four weeks have averaged 215. Feels good to be back on track. Team won all 7 and moved into 1st place, going 26-2 the past four weeks. -- Lou

So far, our team for church is in second place, overall.
I decided to be nice and stop by house and get DH... we went to supper early and then to bowl. DH had three good games... 147-143-133. Me... not so hot! 102-102-93. I just couldn't find any energy or throw the ball correctly. (Reminder to self... if you have been really sick for 5 days, do NOT go bowling! You have no strength!)
I am looking forward to Saturday's league. And I have the 8X8 on Sunday. Then the senior on Monday. I'll get enough in then! LOL!
Going to bed early. I WILL get well!
Hope everyone is doing well!

A bad time for me last weekend in our city tournament. Couldn't find a comfortable line either day. Used four different bowling balls and rolled from the first to the fourth arrow but just didn't find it.

Team: 186-131-169 = 486
Doubles: 170-182-203 = 555
Singles: 187-160-178 = 525

Total: 1566, a 174 average.

Had a better practice last night and hope to rebound tonight in league. Our team is in 2nd place, three points out of 1st with seven weeks to go. -- Lou

Patrick, there is always tomorrow!!
No bowling over Easter... DH and I were so sick we didn't leave house from Friday until Monday afternoon when we went to doctor. Stayed in all Tuesday, too. No Easter church, no Easter meals... just chicken soup and PB & J sandwiches. We survived! LOL!
So, tomorrow I have managed to arrange my day so that I can go bowl in the afternoon. No DH. Just me and the lanes. I can't wait!!!

AWFUL start last evening -- 131! But rebounded nicely with a 216 and 222 for a 569 series. Sadly our team lost 3 out of 4. Dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first game (we all bowled poorly, and we were giving up 155 pins, so a bad combo!).

Interesting night at league tonight. Team went 7-0 again and may have moved into fourth place.

Individually, I guess I needed Geritol or something the first game: five open splits and a missed 10-pin. Scores: 142-207-263 = 612, raised average a pin, four in last four weeks. The past five weeks have averaged 204, the past three 211. I'm psyched for our city tournament team event Sat. and doubles and singles Sun. -- Lou

I was pleasantly surprised to be able to bowl three games after the doctor trip... and the last game was my highest yet. 119-129-183. I only had 2 open frames, and 5 strikes the last game!!!! I focused on my approach, and my target. I never once looked at the pins before I threw the ball. My speed when I made a strike was around 12.5mph, and I followed through well each time. For once, DH said he was impressed how I improved with each game.
I've a very busy, long day tomorrow. I am determined to bowl three games Saturday!

I am working until 11:30am tomorrow, then have a wonderful(NOT!) mammogram afterward. As my Dr. office is about 10 minutes from my fave lanes, I am going to go practice...until I hurt enough to not throw the ball anymore. I plan on taking enough Aleve to keep me going for a few games...LOL! There is no way I can bowl until after Easter Monday. DH has a neurologist appointment on Monday. I hope to get a game or two in on Tuesday.
Catch you all after Easter!

Interesting evening for me last night: 184, 265 and a 155 for a 604 series. Had not bowled in two weeks (not even any practice), so guessing the 3rd game was as much about fatigue as it was not finding the spot I had in game 2. Game 2: started out with 7 in a row!! Got a little too nervous in the 8th and did not stroke the ball as well I had on the previous 7 shots.

Team results: we won 3 out of 4 against the first place team!! That despite losing the first game by 66 pins, so a really good night all the way around!

What an average, Lou! ... I can only dream that one day I'll have a 150 average...
The scores today were not great. 96-114-108. I was very stiff and could not seem to follow through accordingly. I knew where I should stand, the right target to focus on. The only consistency I have is INCONSISTENCY right now! There was no fluidity to my movement, and I wasn't flexible at all. Almost as if my muscles were seizing and keeping taut. Oh, well! One bad day bowling does not ruin them all! frustrating, though! emoticon
My work week is really crazy, so I will be doing good to just check in each day.
Keep Sparking!

Your enjoyment of bowling is evident in the enthusiasm that comes across in your posts, Leah. It is indeed a wonderful sport for gentle exercise and camaraderie. It is a sport you will be able to be a part of for many years.

Saturday I bowled eight games of practice with several people and averaged 195. Sunday was another six games with five other bowling friends. Averaged 193. So 194 for the 14 games. We're getting primed for our city tournament this coming weekend -- team on Sat., doubles & singles on Sun.

It's nice to have my confidence back. I remember how depressing some posts were earlier in the season. Now I'm eager for summer league to begin so I can get off to a good start average-wise. -- Lou

Our Church team was second overall, so far. We bowl two more times befroe we are finished.
Hubby went to first 8X8 meeting. I had a workshop that I would not miss, so they let me bowl yesterday evening to count as my first with the league. Not great, but a decent start. 120-100-114. Average was 111. Church was not very good... 96-105-121. I am still improving, and beginning to understand more.
Today is senior fun. I am looking forward to it.
Bowling has been my anchor when it comes to SPARKing right now. It has kept me from being discouraged as the scale has climbed due to the meds. It has helped me appreciate my body, and that it is a great gift to be able to move and expend energy in a positive way.
I am very grateful that I was led to a sport which helped my DH heal some of his stroke damage, and that has helped both of us when it comes to self image and physical exercise. Bowling gives me a confidence that is new and stronger every time I throw that ball down the lane.
I hope everyone has a good week!
If you celebrate Easter, I hope your Holy Week is filled with much anticipation of the joy of the Resurrection, and a greater knowledge of the love God has for you!

A fun night at league last night: Team went 7-0, I had 266-200-211 = 677 to raise average another pin (that's 3 pins in last 4 weeks).

Started game 1 with the first nine strikes and just knew I would get 300. That's how well I was rolling the ball and how relaxed and confident I felt. To my regret, on the first ball in the 10th, on the lane that hooked more than the other, I didn't listen to my experience which said to move feet and target a board left to get more oil and skid on the ball. Rolled a nice shot but got it out a board or 2 too much to the right, into the dry area, and it hooked on the nose for a 4-10 split. You'd think I'd know better after all these years and after having 300s before. Nice game to start with, though.

My series was only 3rd high on the team behind a 719 and a 726. First game our team scores were 167-266-279-257 = 969 scratch, a 242.25 ave. An exciting night.

One last note: Last night was the 2nd night this year I've worn a red bowling association shirt to make a 300 game award presentation. The two series with the shirt were 719 and 677 = 1396, a 232.6 average for the 6 games. I wonder if I wear it when there is no award to present if it will still bring me such luck? emoticon -- Lou

Last night, still used my straighter Machine ball--have to learn where my targets are with it. Think it will be good spare. My regular ball has its own hook at end so challenge when picking up 10-pin. I usually have to take ibuprofen at beginning of night because my knees hurt. Well past couple of weeks, since I throw out further with straight ball, I've been throwing my shoulder out. Maybe I have to use arthritis cream before coming to alleys for preventive medicine. Everyone had lots of splits, but some were picked up.Only took 1 game, and season will be ending soon. I plan to sign up for summer league. Want to bowl till the end..lol

Taking tonight off from bowling so I can attend my WLS surgeon's monthly seminar for WLS newbies. It was 23 months ago when I attended my first and only seminar, and I feel quite strongly about being there for folks are are new to the journey. Plan to get some practice in later this week!

Due to the Pepsi Youth Tournament at the lanes where we are bowling, the league meeting was cancelled yesterday. BUT! I was able to watch young girls bowl in competetion. Very interesting! There were two sessions, and how many who would go to regionals were chosen by how many participated. Some of these young ladies were AMAZING! An eight year old bowled 185! A sixteen year old bowled 220, with an over 600 series!! WOW!
I was proud of myself today, as I figured out how approach the lanes and hit my target. I bowled 154-135-117, 406. I KNEW when I was doing it right! Did I replicate it? On occasion. I've had a taste of hitting my mark, and it feels SO good! emoticon

Talk about inconsistancy! Yesterday's practice... 100-137-91 ARG!!!
Going to league meeting today. Hope to learn more about USBC. Seems lots of people don't care for it. I guess it is like the AKC... lots of politics and "governing" when it is to the organization's benefit. Have to be a member of AKC to show, or participate in certain canine events. Must be same with USBC and bowling leagues. There HAS to be some redeeming qualities... or it wouldn't exist anymore.

Last evening (Tuesday) was my best night of the season: 236, 212, and a 217 for a 655 series! Plus, our team won all four against the team with the highest team handicap in our league (we spotted them 180 pins per game!). This has at times given us problems.

Tonight I swapped out with a straighter ball (I didn't know what kind of reaction it had because its been a long time since I used it last). There was a lot of oil on lanes for strike ball so I missed my easy spares--middle pins, and didn't figure out my target with swapped out ball.

One other tip that I got WAY back in college (37 years and counting!) -- make sure to walk straight from where you set your feet. So, as an example, if your foot is on the 10th board (which is a typical spot for me), make sure when you throw your ball your left foot is still on the 10th board! Sounds simple, but the key here is make sure you are not wandering all over the approach.

The idea about writing down where you stand is great! Right now I need to try that to help me pay more attention to where I stand, and how it affects my ball position on the lane. Maybe get DH to use phone to record the release, too...
I didn't get to bowl yesterday. But DH did. He went by himself! This is huge! He had a nice time and bowled near his 150 average.
Plan to try to get to practice tomorrow, perhaps.

I also want to add, when I bowl, I take notes on my napkin because I forget what my target is, I'll write L and R for left or right lanes. Under it where my feet is--if at dot on floor or how many boards beside it, and what board I'm aiming at. So I write 1-7 or 2-8. Recently added what pins I'm missing so hopefully I can figure out to adjust. Does this make sense?

CATHOLICCORGI--that black light bowling sounds like fun. People use to tell me I do better with my eyes closed. I figure being in the dark is the same thing..ha! Anyways if you're a straight shooter, you might not need much to aim at.

IUHRYTR --when we started bowling this season, a teammate told me I fouled, so I've been paranoid ever since. I stand quite aways from the foul line and always had trouble throwing out. Even when I was lucky enough to get someone to coach me--back in my younger days--coach would put towel on lanes to help me, but it didn't. I move my feet closer, and look out closer, I try to make the adjustment. I'll check out the site now that you suggested. Also, I'm swapping out bowling balls again. Keeping my spare ball, and have no idea what other ball will do. I think I bought it at local sports store, and had it drilled there. A cheapy ball..not a good idea for league but will change things up.

Happy Bowling!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Marly, try looking further down the lane a foot or so to make your ball slide more before it hooks. Conversely, if the lanes are heavy with oil, try looking closer to the foul-line, maybe a foot before the arrows, to get the ball into an earlier roll. Check out www.bowlingball.com for articles on aiming and let us know how things work out for you.

Leah, thank you for caring and bowling in the fundraiser. Keep up the positive attitude,

Working on my timing by starting my ball in motion earlier has been paying off the past few weeks. Had another good practice Wed.: 236-188-218 = 642.

At league Thurs. started slow but finished strong: 158-211-210 = 579. Team went 2-5 and likely dropped out of the top 10 in the standings.

Today, practicing with four others, had 216-247-269-215 = 947. Things are looking up, the confidence is high, and the timing has gotten so much better. -- Lou

This afternoon was quite the experience! I bowled 118. There were a total of 220 teams bowling today. The black lights, blinking lights and disco balls were in full swing. Totally new experience. LOUD! Until today, I thought I might like to try bowling in black light. Fine, if you aren't serious about bowling...
We had a great time... saw several people I went to school with. I hope I at least bowl the 118 each game tonight. It was very hard to see targets, and the spinning lights made me feel off balance. You literally could not hear yourself think... Interesting to watch people chunk the balls, too. Makes me appreciate what I have learned. Yes, it was all in fun to raise money, and I am proud to say I helped! But I realize I am more about just chucking a ball down the lanes. I want to be GOOD at it one day!
Bowling can be rewarding fun! It boosts my confidence, and is awesome exercise!
Have a great Saturday!

I know how you feel, Marly 314! We are just going to have to "find our way" to do things!
I bowl tomorrow in a fundraiser for Holy Angels, in Belmont NC. It is run by the Sisters of Mercy, and is a place for disabled people who need special care. Google it, if you'd like, and see how it started. Very interesting. The baby that started it all, Maria, and I were born a few days apart in the same hospital. Maria was special in my heart. I am grateful I raised $100. We bowl one game. ALL proceeds go to HA. This is the 21st year. I knew about lots of other fundraising efforts, but since I'd never bowled until the past year, I was unaware of it. I plan on volunteering next year, as well as bowling.
I found the receipt for the first time DH and I went to check out the bowling lanes. July 8, 2012. SO, I've been at it 8 months today. Yep, I AM hooked for life! LOL!
Our bowling time tomorrow is 2pm. We have Church league tomorrow night.
On the 17th we have the meeting for the 8X8 USBC league. How I am looking forward to it! I hope to get all of my questions answered about the USBC, and about how to bowl in tournaments. Our bowling fees for this league get us a USBC membership and the games will establish our initial averages for USBC. PLUS! A new bowling ball! Can't go wrong!
I'll post my scores Sunday.
Don't forget to Spring Forward tomorrow night!

Step into the unknown with confidence! Trust that in the darkness of that first step there will either be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly!

Is there changes you can do in comparison if you're male or female? I'm making an easy question hard. My thought is, my son tells me to throw out further but keep target same. Well I can't throw out further because I tend to crossover, but will moving out a board have the same effect? I want to improve so bad, and I'd like to do a tournament or fund-raiser but with the scores, I can't do it. Its very discouraging when you don't know what to do to work with the lanes.

IUHRYTR--sounds like you've been bowling at our lanes. We've complained for years on broken down machinery while costs of bowling goes up. We only have 1 establishment to go to unless we go out of town.

Lanes tonight, we had spotted oil. My usual target I had to adjust about 3 boards and still miss my spares. We all had lots of splits, but I managed to pick up 3-6-10. Think it was by luck--not skill. Av--134..149, 91, and 128. Pretty sucky but team took all 4.

Today went really well...scratch was112-124-135. My handicap was 69, so adding it in made it all look better...181-193-204. I felt comfortable, and had some really nice shots. I'm getting more confident, and improving!

Be better, Leah.

Two weeks ago a bowling buddy noticed I was late in getting my ball in motion, thus getting to the foul-line way before my ball, making it impossible to be consistent in my deliveries. Improvement started slowly with an over 200 average while practicing five games last Wed. night, focusing on getting my ball into an earlier swing.

The next night, Thurs., in league, team won 4 of 7 and stayed in top eight of the league. Scores were 188-208-174 = 570, with only a first game split open frame and two split opens in third game.

Sat., practicing with three others for seven games, again averaged over 200, then yesterday, Sun., practicing again with three others for seven games, averaged 204.

Maybe I'm on the way back. Sure am more consistent and confident. Looking forward to another practice Wed. and league Thurs. emoticon -- Lou

This is the first week in a long while I have not bowled. We have our Senior league today. I hope to find out more about the 8X8 league today.
Having issues with meds, as in muscle spasms. I shall bowl today!

Take care CATHOLICCORGI -- bowling is tough enough without being dizzy!

Taking tonight off. Signed up for a 3 hour webinar tonight with the National Weather Service on "SkyWarn Basic Training". Have always had a interest in meteorology, so this will be a perfect way to cultivate that interest and serve the public in a meaningful way.

Will try to get some practice in later this week, especially since I switched to my lighter ball last week.

Scores today were NOT impressive... 127-86-90. I spent the last two games trying to keep my balance. My BP dropped to 114/70 the past two days, and I am dizzy even when I walk. SIGH!
We signed up for something called 8X8 with USBC. It is bowling for 8 weeks, $8 a night, and you get a free bowling ball. A USBC membership, and your beginning USBC average recorded. DH wanted a new plastic ball, and I would like one, maybe a pound or two heavier than I have now. It will be on Sunday evenings or afternoon. I'd wanted to join a sanctioned league, and this one will be for those who have never bowled in USBC before. I think it will be good for both of us. We can learn the "ropes" from a beginners level.
Off to take BP again... it WILL get better!
Have a great week everyone!

What I learned at my earlier practice definitely paid off in the first game of the league. It went downhill from there... my cloth I use to wipe my ball after each shot was literally soaked with oil last night! My scores were 148-120-102. Poor DH had a horrible 3 games. Our team won the first game, then lost the next two, but by only a few pins. When we went in yesterday, we were 3rd overall. Not sure where we stand now...
Have Senior league tomorrow. Hope I fare better there!

Yep! There is always next week...
We have our Church league tonight.
I am looking forward to trying the things I did at my practice on Tuesday.
May get DH a new lighter ball today...
Hope your weekend is good!

WOW, Lou, sounds like you could have been bowling at Laurel Lanes! Sorry you had such a hard time. I know how frustrating it is. I'm assuming your lanes is old like mine (65 years).
Next week, right?

How angry am I after tonight's league session? Let me count the ways:

1. Lane 13 frequently dropped the 7-pin when setting a new rack of pins causing us to have to re-rack it twice for a full rack.

2. Lane 14 a number of times had the sweep come down while a ball was on it's way down the lane. The ball would hit the sweep and fall into a gutter. We'd then have to wait for the counter attendant to come down and go get the ball. Several balls had nicks in them from this.

3. My teammates were not ready to bowl when it was their turn causing it to feel like 20 minutes between shots. Two of them would continue talking about fishing gear until I asked them to bowl.

4. Half-way through game 2, because of the machine problems, without asking the team captains, management moved us to empty lanes 1-2, instead of 31-32. Lanes 1-2 are by an exit where so many of the bowlers hang outside and smoke. Every time the door opened the smell of smoke came in. Our captain took every opportunity to go smoke, reeking of smoke when he came back in and often waiting to bowl until he finished his cigarette, causing more slow bowling.

5. Lanes 1-2 have no ceiling fan and the air conditioning vents weren't putting out cool air to help cool it off and to blow away some of the cigarette smell so we had to fan ourselves between shots. The A/C on 31-32 works great.

6. When we were told to move, our anchor bowler started bellyaching about lanes 1-2 having had open bowlers on them before league started. Hey, you're supposed to be a 200 average bowler so deal with it. We can't always have what we consider a perfect lane condition for us.

7. Then there were my scores: 160-156-157 = 473, dropped average a pin and our team lost all 7 points after having moved to 2nd place last week. It was such a frustrating night for me that I am still seething. Can you tell?

There were two other aggravating events but that's enough venting for tonight. -- Lou

Trying to use my new and untried technique at league today (too stupid for words!) I rolled a miserable 143,149,159. Our team lost all four thanks alot to me. Only the last game I went back to my usual throw. The lighter ball does feel better, though.

last evening: 151 (sigh!), 162 (sigh!) and a 188 for a 501 series. Just could not find a decent spot in game 1, so decided to change to my lighter ball. First half of game 2, better first ball counts but struggled with spares (61 after 5), but was able to get on track the 2nd half and salvaged the 162. Game 3 was the best, and would have gotten a 200 except for a ill-timed open in the 9th!

Team won all 4 again this week -- we're at .500 for the 2nd half of the season (14-14)!

Yesterday's scores at Senior Fun Day were OK. 104-103-120. Lanes were on the dry side, and I just could not focus. We left the lanes to go put a dog down, so I was a bit distracted, although I tried not to be.
Today, DH and I needed to get out, so we had lunch and went to practice. I figured out how to slow my ball down. Much better! 113-106-141. Of course it was in the last game I figured out where my best spot to stand was! I had a turkey in frame 10! LOL!
I like the little bowling app for my phone. It keeps a running average. From 2/4 to today, my average is 118.5 I think 118 is darn good for me, as I am still learning to bowl. My approach has improved, and the new ball has helped. Now I need the constistancy. It IS coming along!Practice is the key!
My goal for Fall is to join a USBC sanctioned league. Some of these tournaments look like fun, and I think it would be a good learniong experience for me.
Now that I am only working Wed.-Fri. I have long hours those days. So, no practice until I bowl Saturday night for Church League.
I also realize that unless I am practicing by myself, 3 games is enough for practice.
Hope you enjoy your new ball, Cat! I sure do like mine!

Yesterday was the dble/singles portion of our city tournament and I did not perform very well.
122,172,187 for dbles. 152,175,125 for singles. Even though I had all above avg numbers for the team I still don't think I will wind up in the money. Darn.

Went and had my new ball drilled today. Took a good bowler friend with me to make sure it was done to my specs. It's a pound lighter and felt so much better than my other ball, which is being plugged and redrilled for me to still use as necessary.

I'll be working on my technique and hopefully produce better and more consistent numbers soon.

We had league last night,, a lot of drama on the league..Will be looking for a new league to bowl on next year, but for last night not a good night 166-132-186 ended the night strong but still only took 2 of the 4.
Right lane had to really slow the ball down and the left lane had to throw hard and had to move my mark inward 2 boards.. Going to go practice again on wednesday
Happy Monday
