Missed simple spares ugh! How we despise them! They continued to plague me last week in league and last Sunday in the doubles and singles of our association's annual City Tournament.

Last Thursday league started with all pocket hits: 7-pin, 4, X, 8, 10, 10, 4... and so on the rest of the night.

Game 1: 198 -- One 10th frame missed spare
Game 2: 173 -- One missed spare, one split, couldn't catch a double
Game 3: 175 -- Same story as game 2.

What a different carrying just a few strikes would have made. Team was tied with three other teams for 2nd in position round, won 4 of 7, moved into tie with one other for 2nd, 3 points from 1st, a team we bowled a couple weeks ago and bowl ago next week. it's up to us with 5 weeks to go.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sunday was doubles and singles for our City Tournament. Missed so many spares but averaged 197 for the four middle games. Unfortunately started with 144 with only a strike then four missed spares on right lane as figured out which ball and line to use.

Then 192-181-203-211 with total of 7 more missed spares then tired in game 6 for 148 with 5 missed spares. No splits all day.

On to league tonight.

Shot my 2nd highest game last night, 268, had the first 8, then a spare, a strike and 6,3. I'm on a very small league, 6 teams, and I heard the entire league go oh, when I missed the strike in the 9th.

Interesting week last week.

Thursday team won 5 of 7 points and is tied for 2nd with 3 other teams, 2 points from 1st going into position round tonight.

Game 1: 210 -- Started with 1st four strikes. One missed spare and one missed split.
Game 2: 185 -- Started with 1st five strikes. One missed spare and three missed splits.
Game 3: 203 -- One missed 4-pin in 10th and one missed split. = 598.

Teammates watched the speed monitor on the scoreboard and noticed my ball was definitely slower when I missed spares and got splits.

Won my 2nd bracket match. My opponent tonight bowled Monday and had 172-178 but then popped for a big 234 for 584, with handicap = 740. I need 596 scratch to tie or 597 or better to win and get into the casher's round. Better clean up my spare shooting tonight.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Friday I subbed at my old center. What an adjustment to heavier oil. Team won 5 of 7 points.

Game 1: 147 -- Missed two spares and two splits trying to find a line and ball.
Game 2: 214 -- Missed two spares.
Game 3: 182 -- Missed three spares. = 543.

The good news? Despite five opens last two games, still shot 396 for the two.

On to tonight's bracket challenge. emoticon

Won my first March Madness bracket match last week. Tonight against a bowler who bowled last night so I'll see his scores when I get to league tonight. Spot him 29 pins a game.

Last week team won 5 of 7 points and moved from 3rd to 2nd and cut deficit from 3 to 2 points from 1st. Felt as though I cost us the last game that we lost by only 8 pins.

Game 1: 222 -- clean
Game 2: 188 -- one missed spare (only 2nd one in 4 games)
Game 3: 142 -- 3 missed spares and a split. Pain from the trunk lid accident was intense.
= 552.

More incentive tonight as we head for first place!

Last week team won all 7 points and moved from 8th to 3rd, still 3 points from 1st, with 1st and 2nd places bowling each other tonight while we spot our opponents 285 pins a game. Should be interesting.

Game 1: 4 missed spares, 1 missed split = 162
Game 2 : clean = 203
Game 3: 3 missed splits, 1 missed spare in 10th = 148 = 513

Tonight starts the center's March Madness tournament. 64 bowlers from different leagues put in $20.00 each and were randomly paired against each other.

In round 1 I'm against a woman I don't know. Spot her 21 total pins. Final 8 bowlers earn cash. Should be fun. Must cut down the number of missed spares.

Practiced 3 games with a buddy yesterday. 157-233-167 = 557. Timing was good but a few missed spares hurt.

Tonight: CONCENTRATE!

Did I ever mention my internet bowling friend in Kansas? He said no one in his league knows who Jacob is or how it got started but when someone in his league rolls a first ball gutter then gets their spare by rolling a strike, it's called a Jacob.

So, Patrick emoticon on your two Jacobs!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Last week was an abominable night of spare shooting.

Game 1 -- 4 missed spares -- 167
Game 2 -- 3 missed spares -- 161
Game 3 -- 2 missed spares 1 missed split -- 152 = 480.

Unlike previous weeks, did not roll the ball well. Couldn't get a good ball reaction and wasn't consistent. Only one double. Can't expect good scores when those things happen.

Team was 2 -5 and dropped from 4th to 8th, three points from 1st.

Interesting thing: after 5 of 18 weeks in the 2nd half, 16 of the 22 teams are within a week's worth of 7 points of 1st place.

Last night's league scores: 180, 196, and a 192 for a 568 series. Converted all but one of my cross lane spares but inexplicitly missed a 7 pin, and even wilder threw 2 gutter balls on first shot. Converted both into spares but the 2nd gutter ball was on a spare in game 3 so it cost me 10 pins and a 200 game in game 3!

Rough night for the team - only won like 7 points. I'm on vacation next week so hopefully things will go better for the team.

On a slightly related note, noticed my shoes have seen better days (they are at least 8 years old) so will invest some of my prize money at the end of the season in a new pair.

Bowled four games on a "Super Sport Shot" -- heavy oil and long down the lane -- one of the shots a center here puts down for practice. Wow, sanded one ball with a 500 grit pad and still couldn't get it to hook much. Don't know if that will help or hurt tonight on normal hooking lanes. What an experience though.

Last week missed spares again stopped scores from being better.

Two missed spares game 1 frames 1-2 then a double and turkey, bad counts = 200
Two missed spares game 2 = 181
Severe back cramps game 3 with 3 missed spares and a 10th frame split = 178 = 559

Team = 2-7 points. In 4th, 4 points from 1st. Second and third places bowl each other so we have a good chance to move up except we spot 272 pins a game tonight.

Need to start making spares.

Five games of practice today. High of 224, low of 145. It's hard breaking bad habits.

Last Thursday team won 5 of 7 again and is 15-6, two points from 1st.

Two missed spares and two missed splits game 1 = 150
One missed spare game 2 = 210
Three washouts (I call them splits even though USBC doesn't) game 3 = 174 = 534.

What will tomorrow night bring? emoticon

All right, two 200 games! emoticon Patrick. Tough score for me to aim for tonight. emoticon
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Team won 5 of 7 again last Thursday. Tied for 2nd heading into 3rd week of the half.

Couldn't catch doubles again. one missed spare and a split in game 1, only a missed 10-pin game 2 but then three missed corner spares and a split game 3, 176-180-145 = 501.

Going in early tonight to bowl a game shooting at corner pins. Hope it helps. Have to find my strike ball instead of so many 9 counts.

Last evening's league scores: 174, 210, and a 201 for a 585 series. Game 3 should have been better -- missed an easy 10 pin in the 10th frame. Just did not throw my cross lane with any confidence, which is sad because I hadn't missed one all night! Game 1 was interesting -- only one open but after opening with two strikes, all spares except for the open (a split). Took me well into game 2 to find my spot -- 30th board -- but once I did the strike count went up!

Head to head beat my opponent games 2, 3 and series! Team: Lost games 1 and 2 by a total of 80 pins but roared back in game 3 to win that game + series! A total of 23 points for the evening!

Last Thursday, 8 missed spares and an open split kept my scores low. 157-178-208 = 543. Team won 5 of 7 to start the 2nd half.

Game 3 started strike, spare, five bagger, but then a split and a missed single pin in the 10th ruined the good start.

Back at it tonight.

Last evening's league results: 223, 202 and a 177 for a 602 series! First "six" in awhile! Should have been even better, but had a VERY untimely 4-6-7-10 split in the 10th of game 3, and had a strike in the 9th to set up what should have been a good finish. But I am sure I probably slowed down the ball in the 10th and my ball went right through the heart!

On a even more positive note, team did VERY well, winning 29 out of 35 points. I beat my man in games 1,3 and series, so I earned 4 points I believe.

More practice on Friday...it does seem to be making a difference!

emoticon Patrick. You're holding up the team!

Glad the tip about staying under the ball helped.

After seeing the videotape of my delivery Tuesday last week, and focusing on lifting the ball with my right ring finger last Thursday at league, I started with three of the most beautiful strikes I've thrown in a while.

Had 118 in 5th frame but then the wheels fell off -- chopped a 7 of 4-7, chopped a 3 off 3-6, open split, missed a 10 on the left at the last moment, another open split, 4 of last 5 frames were open for 164. Two more missed spares and 2 more open splits in game 2 for 178, then a missed spare and open split game 3 for 166 = 508. No doubles after the beginning turkey. Team won 4 of 7 and finished 1st half in 4th place of 22 teams, 1 out of 3rd and 2 points from 2nd.

Practiced five games Tuesday this week with video, making the same mistake every shot -- starting out under the ball, palm up, but as the ball dropped beside my leg my thumb turned down and the fingers swung and released on the side of the ball causing dropped shots, pulled shots, and no hook or direction.

A bad habit. I don't know how or why I started doing this. Will take a lot of swinging at home in front of a mirror to (I hope) correct. We'll see how tonight goes when I lower the ball in my stance, move way up on the approach, and try to do a very loose swing. Maybe that will cut the back swing down and give me a better feel of the ball as it starts backward.

last evening's league play: 200, 185, and a 179 for a 564 series. Highlights: 1) Only one missed cross lane spare! 2) Punched out in the 10th both in games 1 and 3! 3) Really tried to stay behind ball on release all night.

A few too many splits though, but overall I was pretty happy. More practice this Friday. It seems to be helping!

Thanks for sharing Lou. I plan to get some practice in tomorrow and will really concentrate on keeping my hand under my ball when I release for my 1st throw + all spare shots except cross lane. For my cross lane spares, I had purposely changed my hand to the side from the get go and was having better luck with that last week. I'll probably stay with that approach.

Good comeback Patrick! emoticon
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

A frustrating league night last Thursday but an uplifting videotaped lesson yesterday.

First the bad news, for me. Same problems with missed spares (6) and open splits (3) and no doubles to make up for any of them. 156-163-153 = 472. Team won 5 of 7 to either be in 3rd or 4th (standings haven't been posted yet) going into position round to end the half tomorrow night.

Now the good news. A videotaped lesson Tuesday immediately showed a major flaw. Although I started with the palm of my bowling hand facing the ceiling, thumb about 1:00 or 2:00, as the ball got to its lowest point on the backswing my thumb was facing about 9:00 position and my release was with fingers on the side of the ball instead of underneath, thus dropping the ball, pulling it, not getting hook I expected.

I also need to work on a deeper knee bend and to get my non-sliding leg further behind me before my release.

Now I have something for teammates to watch for. Bowled four games with instruction conversation video replay along the way then bowled a serious game with two turkeys, and all four single pin spare conversions, the best game all season.

Now to see how tomorrow night goes.

Last evening: 136 (really?), 190, and a 210 for a 536 series. I was pretty clueless in game 1, could not find a good strike line, missing easy spares, etc. At least I found a decent line in games 2 and 3. Was 3 for 5 on cross lane spares. Missed a critical one in the 10th of game 3 that held that score down. More practice on Friday.

I realized I had not posted my league scores from Tuesday night: 177, 171 and a 225 for a 573 series. As usual, games 1 and 2 should have been better had it not been for missing easy spares. I did have a demoralizing pocket hit 7-10 split in game two, 5th frame, after I had opened with strike, spare, strike, strike! Finished that game with two 10 pin misses! Thankfull game 3 was a goodie! BTW, I brought my big hook ball back out and for the most part it performed well.

I brought my equipment home with me (normally I leave it in my locker) so I can get some practice in tomorrow at my former establishment. It is only 10 minutes away and I just need practice time.

It must be frustrating that you and hubby are still sick, Leah. Consistent scores, though. However, don't stay sick so you bowl well. emoticon
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I share your spare shooting frustration Patrick. Last Thursday I missed 3 in game 1 and 3 in game 2, plus 3 splits game 3. In game 1 twice on right lane I chopped the 3 and 9 off 3-6-9. Game 2's were all single pins. Should have made them.

166-161-188 = 515. Team won 2 of 7 and dropped from 3rd to 4th.

We lost game 1 by 2 pins, won game 2 by 10, and needed 3 of us to mark in 10th frame of game 3 on the left lane that had been slick before the head pin all night. Unbelievably, the 3 of us with the team's highest averages had our shots dive onto the headpin, all of leaving the 4-6-7. A surprising and disappointing way to finish.

Back on the horse tonight.

Lou

Monday SFB wasn't bad... 136-142-122. I wasn't feeling well, and really didn't want to go. DH and I are still battling that crud going around... Supposed to start snowing tomorrow afternoon through Saturday. Maybe that will kill all of the germs!
Happy New Year!

Last evening's results: Started out nicely with a 203, slumped to a 167 in game 2, and then fell to pieces in game 3 with a 135 for a 505 series. Better than last week, but really disappointed. I may have to break out my other retired ball! But what I really need is practice! Way too many easy missed spares! My issue is that where I am bowling now is a solid 20 minutes away and the day I prefer to practice -- Friday -- they don't open until 6PM! The house I used to bowl at is closer and opens at 4PM on Friday so I may just go there for practice -- just get some reps in and see if that helps my game!

Last Thursday I tried a hooking ball I hadn't used. Stayed clean for 213. Lost timing game 2 for 149 with 2 missed spares and three open splits. Switched balls game 3 missed 1 spare and 1 split but had six 9 counts and no doubles for 164 = 526.

Team won 4 of 7. Still in 3rd, 1 out of 2nd and 7 out of 1st.

Finally made it back to Senior Fun Bowling... and I was surprised at how well I bowled! The lanes were bone dry, but I conquered! 161-126-182. 469. Not too shabby for being out three weeks.
I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. We had a very quiet Christmas day. Both DH and I have had colds for two weeks, and my colonoscopy mishap added to the longer recoup.
Saw the gastro doctor today, and no issues. The two polyps were negative and my eating plan is acceptable to the doctor. I'm good for 5 years now. Hallelujah!
May the New Year bring us peace, joy, and better bowling scores! emoticon

Speaking of missing easy spares, which I do every week (sigh), 5 of them Thursday night and 3 missed splits, one in 10th frame (those really hurt, don't they?).

168-204-175 = 547. Team started the night in 3rd, won 5 of 7, and moved into 2nd.

Back to the lanes for league play last evening: 200, 209 and a 157 (sigh) for a 566 series. Game 3 was plagued with easy spare misses, and the only salvation was a turkey in frames 9, 10, and 11 (followed by a 7 count) that rescued what would have been a horrible way to end the evening! Team wise, we won 3 our of 4 and got 23 points for the evening.

Leah, your scores are improving. Feel better soon, and hubby, too.

Hi Cat, a dysfunctional team surely can take the joy out of the game. Good to see you back.

Last Thursday only had 3 missed spares and 1 missed split but couldn't get doubles. Clean game 3. 176-182-191 = 549. Team was 3 of 7 but moved into a tie for second, 3 points from 1st.

Greetings all and Merry Christmas.
I see I haven't posted in two months.
Most of that time I have been bowling pretty good, until last Wed when I lost my streak.
Our team has been fractured this season with members coming and going with illnesses and injuries and I believe that has played into our team failures and for some of my personal lack of joy. Hopefully we will get it together in the next week and start the second half off on the right foot.
Happy bowling to you all.

Team won all 7 points again last night and atyed in 3rd after week 11.

Once again rolled the ball well. Compliments from teammates about my shots, but couldn't carry enough doubles to make up for 4 missed spares and 3 missed splits, including 1st frame pocket 7-10. Guess that was an omen for the night.

177-190-167 = 534.

We did not have league last Thursday, Thanksgiving. I would have enjoyed getting a turkey XXX. D'oh! emoticon

On the 17th, I finally got strikes to overcome 2 missed spares and 1 missed split in games 1 and 2 but not game 3's three missed spares.

208-203-161 = 572. Team went 5-2.

Eager to get back to it Thursday but need a couple of practice sessions before then.

WOW!! Did my "retired" come through or what? 199, 201 and a 267 for a 667 series! Easily the best game and series this season. Game 3 was most pleasing: strike, spare, spare, and then closed out with a 9 bagger!

We did well team-wide -- 25 out of a possible 36 points! We started our second third of our season so we are off to a great start.

And yes, the "retired" ball is retired no longer!

Hope you are feeling better, Leah. Why is it so hard for all of us to be healthy on league day? emoticon Consistency is becoming one of your strengths. emoticon

Hey Patrick, let's get t-shirts printed reading: Bowlers United Against 10-Pins! emoticon Way to pull out your second game. emoticon

I realized as I talked with a friend about me giving up bowling that her advice was what I needed to hear ~~ Change your attitude. I have been so disgusted and depressed with my scores so far this season and with the games I feel I lost for the team that I was ready to hang it up but she convinced me to hang in there and take each shot with a more positive attitude. We shall see how tonight goes.

Except for a few good shots last week was another disaster for me: 8 missed spares and 5 missed splits. 161-139-147 = 447, dropped another 2 pins. Team won 3 of 7 and held onto 6th place of 22 teams with position round tonight.

After years of successes, al with all of my bowling knowledge, the past few years' scores have not been satisfying. It might be time to give in and admit my back cramps and pain so far have not allowed me to roll the ball consistently well.

So, will new attitude = better scores? Ever hopeful it will.

Didn't bowl yesterday... totally exhausted from our Marriage Encounter weekend. We're looking forward to going next week. I drove over 7 hours Friday to get to Atlantic Beach, NC. Due to road construction, it took 2 hours to go 28 miles... what should have taken 5 hours was torture... Luckily, returning Sunday night was a bit better. Just over 5 hours to get home. needless to say, we took another route home... Both of our legs were swollen. Better yesterday morning. Today we feel like ourselves again! LOL!
Hope your week is going well!

My scores from last evening's league play: 214, 160 (YIPES) and a 184 for a 558 series. Really started out well -- 5 straight to open game 1, then proceeded to miss two 10 pins! Game 2 totally lost my spot for the 1st half and had a 64 after 5 -- found it to at least make the game respectable, game 3 better but more 10 pin misses! I need to get some practice time in.
Team wise -- we lost all 4! SIGH!

I've had similar things happening to me. I really feel I have released the ball well, and covered my mark. The ball looks like it is rolling down perfectly... it even hits the pocket. But the pins act like they are possessed! I've come along far enough to know what throwing a good ball is! May not happen often, but when it does, I know it. I am assuming the oil pattern has something to do with it? Especially when others I am bowling with(who are really good bowlers) are saying they are having the same issues. Maybe it's a conspiracy? LOL! All over the world bowlers are having their minds messed with! LOL!
I hope to do better tomorrow. I am grateful for a second...third...fourth chance! emoticon

Wow, Leah, tough break on the lane breakdown. Good going on the practice scores. Hang in there. emoticon
*****************
Patrick, I have a bowling friend in Kansas City who told me he does not know who Jacob was or how this got started, but in his league if a bowler throws a first ball gutter then gets a strike for the spare, they call it a Jacob. emoticon

So, emoticon on your Jacob!
******************
Your story was mine, Patrick. Last Thursday after the back injections, I felt as if I had rolled really good shots 98% of the night. The ball was coming off my fingers great and I was seeing it roll over my target but didn't know where the ball was going.

One would slide, the next one hook, couldn't get a comfortable line, even rolling what felt like great shots. Different balls, different hand positions, nothing got me lined up. Four missed spares, 5 missed splits, dropped another 2 pins in average, 10 in the past two weeks. That has to stop tonight!

159-137-179 = 475. Team won 5 of 7 and we moved from 11th to 8th place of 22 teams.

Back to league play after a week off: 179, 192, and a 206 for a 577 series. Actually felt like I bowled better than the scores show. Game 1 a couple easy missed spares, games 2 and 3 were clean but threw a gutter ball in game 2 on a spare that cost me a 200 game (thankfully I covered the spare on my 2nd ball!). Tough night for the team -- only won 1 of 3 and lost series too.

emoticon Senior bowling was interesting yesterday. I have honestly forgotten what my scores were...
We started out on our usual lanes, then one lane went wacko. Scoring by itself and resetting itself. put us a game behind everybody else waiting for each fix. Finally we were moved to other lanes. Guess what! this set kept dropping the pins! By this time it is almost 3pm, and we would be finishing up, and we're not on 3rd game yet. We are moved again. The next set of lanes go dark, and drop pins! We finished after 4pm. Everybody else was done and left. Can we say frustrating? Two members of our team had to bowl at 6pm for their regular league. They were NOT happy campers. I was very tired. Thus the memory lapse... We'll see if anything is said next Monday. Things happen, I know. But THREE sets of lanes? Or is it just our team is jinxed?!? LOL!
Have a good week! Mine can only get better!

I was able to get out of work early today, so I took advantage of the fact, and decided I wanted lunch from the country buffet restaurant next to my bowling alley. Since the alley looked deserted AND I just happened to have my bowling bag in the car, I went in and bowled 4 games. 122-143-115-132. Averaged out to 128 a game. I was pretty happy with my overall scores.

Glad you are going to use the light idea, Leah.

Isn't it nice when you get better every game? Good going!

Back injections in the morning in a different place in my back. Wonder how things will feel in league Thursday?

Not too shabby, for not bowling consistently in awhile...118-139-156= 413 scratch; plus handicap of 56 is a 581 series. I'll take it... emoticon

Thanks for the tip about the night lights, Lou. Our house was built in 1949, and outlets in the bedroom amount to ONE! LOL! But I think there is a way... I found these stick on LED lights that if I place one on his night stand, and he "taps" it, it will come on and give enough light to get to the bathroom and turn that one on. I may use one on my nightstand, too. No excuses to not use it when all you do is touch it.
We are going to try to get o bowling today.
DH has numbness on his left side leg. From the knee upwards. He thinks he irritated the nerves when he fell, so that probably means another round of injections for him. If they work, that's what counts.

emoticon Patrick and Leah for your concern. At Thursday league this week I'll see how effective, if at all, new injections on Wednesday will be. These will be in the tailbone. Others were in the nerve on right side of my back at the tailbone. We'll see how painful these new ones are.

emoticon about hubby Leah. I put a nightlight in every room except my bedroom and the bathroom across the hall from me but the one in the hall lights up the bathroom. Can't afford to fall and break a leg or hip. Maybe doing that can prevent another episode in your house. Plus, the bright lights don't have to be turned on emoticon emoticon . The night lights aren't expensive when bought one or two at a time. Maybe a dollar store has them, I haven't checked.

Oh, Lou! So sorry about the back issues! My poor DH can relate! He fell on Friday Sept. 9 and twisted his ankle. This began a gout flare. then on Sunday morning around 2am, he fell again... No offense, but it was a "guy thing"... he wouldn't take the 2 seconds to turn on the light, and even with his walker he managed to fall into the bathroom. Took me 45 minutes to get him up. Only bruised his knees. But by Monday, the gout flare was uncontrolled. We ended up at the foot/ankle doctor Monday morning. Sprained ankle, and a soft cast for the gout. No bowling. We were finally able to bowl last Monday. Right now I do not remember my scores. No one had high scores. I was somewhere around 120 each game. Not terrible. I hope to go tomorrow. More doctor appointments in the AM.
We are glad we didn't do the Church league... no point in paying for bowling when you cannot go. DH's gout and balance issues make it difficult to plan. Thank goodness for the Senior Fun group! If it's the best we can do, I'll be grateful!
I've set a few new goals for the coming few months, and will try to check in at least twice a week with the team.

Last night was one I hope never to repeat. My back cramped so bad that my series was the lowest I can remember, even back to high school. I feel I let the team down even though we won 2 of 7 points. If there is a next time with that much hurting, I'll stop and let the team use my average. Going to try a back brace and taking pain pills earlier next week.

Missed 12 spares and two splits. Ugly night. 140-115-153 = 408, dropped average 8 pins. Sigh.

Last evenings scores: 206, 176, and a 172 for a 554 series. So much better than two weeks ago. I really needed the break last week. I won 4 out of 5 points in my head to head match, and the team lost the first two games but rallied in game 3 to win that and series. So not too bad of a night.

I plan to practice this weekend, and am going to take my old bowling ball to see if it will help my scores. The problem with my new ball is that it seems I get into all sorts of trouble if my speed or hook let up even a little bit. Great for the "crankers" out there, but maybe not for this 59 year old man who was never a cranker to being with.

Hi all. This was week six for my league and the first week that I bowled my avg or above all three games. It felt good once I stopped looking up instead of at the ball going down the lane.
And my team won two games and total.
Stay safe down southeast, folks.

*******
Thursday team got shellacked and lost all 7 points. Dropped from a tie for 2nd to a tie for 6th but 10 points away from first and we bowl them this week. A chance to make up a lot of ground.

Game 1 missed another two 10-pins to the left, a 10-pin and a missed 1-2-7 in game 2 then a fourth 10-pin and a 4-7-6-9-10 split on a slow ball (you can relate, right Patrick) in game 3.

184-200-173 = 557, raised average 2 pins.

Going to use my plastic straight ball on 10-pins this week and see how that works and need to get a few games of practice in.

Congrats Leah!
I have been absent for too long. No real excuses.
League started for me five weeks ago and my avg this year is 141. Last year it was 153.
I had health issues again this summer, bought a house, moved, worked on selling old house (hopefully closing the end of Oct), and just plain old life has taken my attention away from SP.
While moving, etc I stopped going to the gym for over 2 months and lost some strength that I am now working on regaining from working out again.
I'll post more frequently now.

Last Thursday I started with a ball I hadn't used at this center. began with a spare then four missed spares. Switched balls and was clean through the last five frames and first nine of game two until I missed a 10-pin in the 10th frame. No doubles game 3 and three missed spares.

153-225-159 = 537 = Raised early season average a pin, up every week so far.

Team won all 7 points to move into tie for 2nd place of 22 teams.

Still getting used to how much these lanes hook.

Ever hopeful again tonight.

Tuesday night league results: 188, 186, and a 174 for a 548 series. I was especially proud of my finish in game 3. Was going along OK until the 9th when I left 4-10 split, which I did not convert. But Lou, your comment to me about watching my speed in game 3 came to mind, and in the 10th brought the "heat" (for me) out and promptly closed out with a turkey! Thanks Lou!

Team wise, we won 3 out of 4 games, and I beat my man 3 out of 4 as well. We earned 21 points (out a possible 35) for the night.

Pretty good night I think...

Last Thursday I finally got some strikes, a four-bagger and twice a three-bagger but missed spares again cost me 200 games. 184-194-165 = 543, raised early average six pins. Team won all 7 points.

Have to concentrate more on my spares, especially at this center where the back end of the lanes hook a lot.

Tuesday night results: 154 (seriously?), 180, and 195 for a 529 series. First game was a mess -- even more befuddling was that I had a great line during practice and then just like that, it vanished! I was at 50 through 5, so at least I recovered somewhat. 3 for 4 on 10 pin spares, but missed a few other easy ones. Only beat my man in game 2. Team wise we lost 3 out of 4 games.

Last night, Thursday, was week 1 of a new league at a different center with different teammates, one a friend.

Not the auspicious beginning I hoped for. I bowled here for years but forgot how the wood lanes hook, especially the last foot or two before the pins, either on strike or spare shots. First frame left a 10-pin (so much for averaging 300 for the season emoticon ) and, like this summer at the old center, missed it to the left at the last moment.

That the balls would begin hooking halfway down the lane was a surprise. Plus the pressure of wanting to post good scores for my teammates.

Had 135 -- 1 split, 5 missed spares, 156 -- 3 splits, 1 missed spare, 218 -- 2 missed spares, had a four-bagger and then a turkey to end the game when the hotshot bowlers for the next league were watching. The 218 was high game on the pair. 509 series for week 1.

So a slow start then got the ball and line that worked for game 3.

My average will be established tonight and a 4th teammate's next week so not sure if we won a game or two.

Happy with how the night ended, though.

You are getting more consistent Leah. emoticon Now you need a t-shirt that says, "Our bowling team was not last!" emoticon Keep up the good effort.
********
Glad to read you like your new center Patrick. Scores went up week 2. emoticon You had the frustration I've had of blowing 200 games because of missed spares. Something for us both to keep concentrating on. The point system sounds exciting.
********
My last two weeks of summer league were plagued with games where nothing went right and ruined half-way decent series.

8/11: 202-194-136 = 532. Team won 5 of 7.
8/18: 172-135-170 = 477. Team won 0 of 7 and finished in 8th place of 20 teams. Got $50.00 more than I expected.

On 8/21 practiced four games with a bowling buddy, trying different releases and balls. Had 233-138-199-169.

Yesterday was the first practice since then, at the different center I'll bowl in starting tomorrow (Thursday) night, 6:30. Tried to get into the 9:00 league that fills all 32 lanes with teams of four but there were no spots open. I bowled in it for a couple of years some time ago and averaged 204 and 209.

The games Tuesday were to see how the back would hold up and see how to shoot 10-pins there. This summer I missed eleven 10-pins when the ball hooked to the left at the last moment. Never had a streak like that. Back on wood lanes the balls kept sliding off into the gutter. That will be a major challenge this year. Bowling with a new team where I know only one teammate but he said he has already told the others about my bowling accomplishments.

Now to live up to the hype. My goals this summer: Keep frustration in check, concentrate more on spares, and average 190 or higher. Eager to see how tomorrow goes. emoticon

Week 2 scores: 212, 194, and a 165 for a 571 series. Easy misses on spares in game 2 cost me a 2nd 200, then game 3 kind of lost my spot plus I am sure lack of bowling stamina contributed. I'm going to try to get in some practice tomorrow at lunch, but that means I need to get up early and run so that I can free my lunchtime up. With it back into the 90's and high humidity, pretty good reason to run early!

emoticon

I do like the head to head point system in this league. Keeps me on my toes and focused! I was giving up 24 pins to my man, and he beat me the first two games but won game 3. Team-wise, we won game 1, lost game 2 and 3, and tied in total pins! So if I understand correctly, we got 16 points and the other team got 19. Week 1 we got 30 of 33 points and yet that was only good for 3rd place, so I suspect we may drop. But all good...

My scores from last Monday SFT were 128-164-119(411) w/HC(162) 573! I'm inching forward to my goal of a 150 average... I told our pro that when I reach that I will treat myself to a new ball. I think he is praying for me to reach it now...LOL! I gather there is always new balls coming out each year. Since it has been about 5 years since we started bowling, I doubt if they even make a Karma anymore... It has served me well!
Hope everybody is having a good holiday weekend!

Week 1 of the new season is in the books. My scores: 191, 191, and a 168 for a 550 series. Considering I have bowled a total of 5 practice games, I am pretty happy with these scores. 2 splits and 2 missed 10 pins cost me in game 2, and a 10th frame split in game 2 lowered my score there. All things that can be worked on. On the positive side, I LOVE my new house (clean, lanes well cared for!) and my new team! My new league uses a point system, and I understand we earned 26 out of a possible 35!

Practice time is going to be a challenge. The day I like to practice -- Friday -- the house does not open until 6pm. They will be opening up during the daytime on the weekends starting next weekend so Saturday or Sunday may be my new practice day.

All in all, a nice start to the season!

WTG Patrick👍🏻 Sounds like a good change of bowling scene for you!
We finished our No-Tap tonight. Bowled our friends from Church. We've ended up in 13th out of 14 team. Margaret and Len hold the 14th spot. We won 2 games and total pins for 6 points tonight. All three games were close. DH's scores were not his usual. I was happy with mine...237-146-253.
A bit tired... Headed to bed.
Looking forward to a nice weekend.

Update on my fall league "hunt" -- my teammate Frank and I went to the organizational meeting at the the new house on Tuesday and we were lucky to find a team that needed two bowlers so we are "in"!!

emoticon

This is a bit more competitive mens league, and they use a match point system to make it even more interesting. I don't think it is a true "Peterson" point system, but honestly i've never bowled in a league with any head-to-head point system, so this will be a fun wrinkle regardless of the name of the system!

With my new "house" a bit farther away plus Frank and I are going to carpool, I will have to leave my home a bit earlier (around 6PM). The last few seasons I had stopped at Subway to have a sub before bowling, but won't be able to do that this season, so I am hoping the new house has a decent snack bar.

Our season starts 08/30. Hope to get some practice in over the next two weeks. I'll keep you all posted.

Scores yesterday were not great, but I will not complain. 146-114-129=389 +HC168=557. The lanes were very oily. No one had high scores.
Have just muddled through each day... too hot. Not much energy for anything.

Last night was the last No-Tap session... next week will be a roll-off. My scores were OK. 179-207-189=575
The couple we bowled have averages of 250 each, so we can't compete. Really, we cannot compete with any of the bowlers on this league. We just enjoy being around them... that's why we do it. We are in 12th spot out of 14 teams.
Terribly hot here... no rain at all in weeks. Grass is brown and crunchy!
Staying inside!!!

Lou, I'm envious of your scores...LOL! But I think one day I will be having more like yours. My goal is a 150 average, and I'm inching closer towards it week by week. I'll get the consistency thing right eventually! emoticon

My scores for the past four weeks have been mixed, many 200 games missed because of not making easy spares but converting several wide-open splits.

July 14: 182-170-172 = 524. Team won 3 of 7 points.
July 21: 168-226-159 = 553. Team won 2 of 7.
July 28: 181-186-163 = 530. Team won all 7.
Aug. 4: 190-185-177 = 552. Team won 2 of 7. (Lost game 2 by 1 pin. Ouch!)

Average to date: 181+. Have to do better tonight. Next week ends the summer session.

Best of success with your weight loss Leah. I'm in the same boat, stable at -29 pounds but can't seem to break through and get the scale heading downward again. Maybe we can work on this together somehow. I agree that your joints will love you as will my back and right knee if another 30 pounds is gone.

emoticon because we are BOWLERS! Let's start rocking this weight loss. How about we try to lose one pound a week? I'll start a post for weight loss progress and anyone on the team can join us by posting their weight for the week or just their loss, or gain for the week.

Hoping hubby recovers soon and that you aren't in much pain. We love to bowl, don't we, but it is frustrating when we have to limit our bowling because of injuries.

So, by next March we will each have lost say 25 pounds and be ready for a second league next summer.

My scores yesterday were not too consistent...124-143-110. I was very tired by the third game for some reason. I also twisted my right arm somehow. With my handicap I had a 542 series, so I will not complain. I am far more comfortable with my ball now than I have been, and I'm making progress overall. We have decided to just stay with the Senior league on Monday. Perhaps we will get in some games during the week, but a league commitment at night just isn't feasible for us at the moment. DH is having knee issues. He sees his doctor next Tuesday, so when that is sorted out we may feel differently about bowling another day in the week.
It's time for me to tweak my SparkPlan. My weight has been stable for three months. I've maintained well. My doctors want me to lose another 30-35 pounds over the next year. All of them tell me it will be slow, and not easy, because of being lower carb and grain free. My body has adjusted to how I eat now, and is happy where it is. All of my "numbers" are wonderful. It would be good for my joints to lose the next round of pounds. I've not exercised, other than bowling, intentionally. Exercise will be the key. It will have to be something sustainable. I have a recumbent bike and a treadmill. It's getting the motivation to do them both. If it isn't fun, it don't get done! LOL!
I've been remembering all of you in my prayers!

You're getting more 200 games in your no-tap leagues Leah. That's emoticon

It's tough bowling against some of the younger bowlers who have developed the style and who have the newer bowling balls that lets them crank their shots and get the hook and revolutions that most of us can't get. Maybe others on our team here grew up as I did rolling shots down the lane with hook at the end. I can still hook a ball but nowhere like these younger bowlers. They are really something to watch.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Patrick, I join Leah in hoping you find a spot on a team at the new center. A change of centers and oiling patterns can give us a fresh outlook.

I got my old team together and we tried to get in a really competitive summer league at a center I have bowled in before but which they hadn't. But we were team #23 and there were only 22 spots because of an adjacent league. So my team decided to go back to where we have bowled the past three years, much to my dismay. I really wanted to bowl at the first center since it would be a change of scenery and is where I had my highest averages.

Wouldn't you know it, after the others left for the old center and same league as before that started that same night, a bowler I have teamed with before came running out to the parking lot asking me if I wanted to bowl with his team since a bowler had to change his plans.

I wanted to say yes but had already committed to the others. If my teammates don't want me back with them this fall, I'll see if someone needs a bowler in the fall version of the other center's summer league.

Best of luck to you.

I have four weeks of scores to report later.

Lou

Good luck, Patrick! I hope you can join a team where it will be FUN for you, besides improving your bowling skills!
The No-Tap last night wasn't too good, but it was a lot of fun. We lost to the other couple because they had 3 300 games each. Yes, they are that good! Most of their strikes were legit, too! We are 12th of 14 teams. I had 143-146-216. I just could not find a good place to bowl... the lanes were dripping. I finally found where to stand by the 3rd game... Ball would only go straight. The couple we played against had balls that curved from one side of the lane to the other. When the threw the ball, the speed was like 19 mph. Pins had no chance...
Both are in their late 20's and have bowled since they could walk...LOL! Nice people, and I enjoyed watching them.
Looking forward to Senior Fun on Monday.
Hope your weekend is good!

430 practice set this afternoon. Considering I have not set foot in a bowling alley in over 3 months that wasn't all that bad.

My teammate from my team last season and I are going to go to the league meeting at the new "house" on 8/16 to see if we can find some bowlers looking for a team (or maybe a team picks the two of us up!). The "old" house has their league meeting on 8/23 so at least if "new" doesn't pan out we have a fallback option.

Planning to get some practice in today as the fall season is not too far away. I was really hoping to change to a different house this fall but so far only one of my teammates from last season and I are interested. I'm going to call the league secretary for the proposed house today to see if he know of individual bowlers looking for a team. In the meantime I'll get my practice in the "old" house and make sure I still have a team to come back to. I'll post my practice scores later on...

The only redemptive thing about today at SFB was NO one had decent scores. I don't know what the oil pattern was , but it was awful. I had 137-116-112. I threw some beautiful balls, yet the pins still stood. I was the queen of 9's today. Had it been No_Tap, I'd have had a super day! LOL!
Oh well... that's how it rolls!

No Tap was fun. My scores were rather good! 243 -170 -213. I shall not complain! We still didn't get any points. The guys we were up against are 250 average bowlers in normal leagues. I feel we held our own, though. Going to prebowl for next week. A charity tournament is taking up our No Tap space. It's a good cause, so we may bowl in it. $25 per person, with $15 going as direct donation to couple's medical bills. Cancer has bankrupted them. There but by God's grace could go DH and I...
Hope everyone has a great weekend! Wish this iPad would let me use emoticons on SP!

Thanks, too, for the heads up on the Spark changes. Wonder what the "premium" will be about?
Have No Tap tonight... hope DH and I are up to it!

I apologize for being AWOL on weekly updates. I am in the process of selling my home and buying a soon-to-be totally remodeled one four houses away. That and car problems -- needed new alternator and battery.

Still hopeful Cat and Leah and Leah's husband get healthy soon. emoticon

Two Fridays ago I missed game 1 because the car wouldn't start for 5th day in a row. Finally got it jumped and going but couldn't de-stress and had 144-167 with 2 missed spares and 2 missed splits each game. Average dropped to 184. Team went 2-5.

Last Wednesday bowled 4 practice games, switching balls throughout. Had 180-133-200-177. Continue to miss spares and have missed splits every game.

Last Friday in league team again won 2 of 7 but stayed in top 10 of 20 teams. Had 184-158-196. Games 1 and 3 could have been 200s if I had made 3 spares. Average dropped again to 183. Felt as if I rolled the ball well, just have to focus more on spares. emoticon

I was comfortable with my scores yesterday at Seniors... I took first place for last session. I got an $8 certificate to either pay for my next bowling or use at the snack bar. Nice. I bowled 126-168-136. We started over yesterday, so I don't know what my handicap will be. DH's back is out, so he is resting this week until Friday.
Sunday we went to bowl with some friends at the AMF lanes here. Very poor place. Not been kept up well at all. I'm spoiled by all the nice graphics at my house and at the one we bowled at for Church league. This AMF was dated and frayed at the edges. Seems nobody cares there. Those at the desk played on their phones and the snack bar was closed due to lack of personnel. Sad.
Catching up on housework today. Supposed to be over 100 today. It was yesterday... most of the weekend was so hot it hurt to breathe. Not going anywhere and staying inside.
Hope everyone is well. Continuing to pray for Cat and her family! Remembering all of us! Sometimes we just have to remind ourselves that God is greater than any situation we face, and we are not alone as we face each day!
