I had my first good night in a long time last night. I bowled 181,187, 212. But still lost my points as the guy I bowled decided to bowl way over his average. Despite that, I was happy with the night.

Last evening: 192, 234, and a 173 for a 599 series. At least my average won't go down. Key misses in the 9th frame in games 1 and 3 really hurt! Not to mention some ugly splits in game 3!

Struggled against another high handicap team last night, losing 3 out of 4. They were on fire, and I'm not sure even our A+ game would have helped!

I've had that 4-6-7-9-10 split a few times -- seems amazing to me that 3 our 4 pins in the back can remain up in spite of hitting the head pin. I'll have to see if someone has posted a slo mo video of that on YouTube.

Forgot to mention that the first game split last night was a 5-7-10, often called a sour apple and equally often announced over the loudspeaker. emoticon Fortunately, no announcement last night. It was embarrassing enough just leaving it. First time having that split. Hoping never again.

While not close to Patrick's emoticon series, I finally had a good night. Only two missed spares and a split 1st game, clean 2nd game, one split 3rd game for 179-264-190 = 633, raised average two pins and team won 5 of 7 in end of half one position round. Rolled the ball well tonight and will always take sloppy strikes! emoticon -- Lou

OK, let's get the bad news out of the way. We lost the roll off. Won the first game by 12, but lost the last two by 60 and 30 pins. Still, 2nd place isn't all that bad. Our top bowler just never got untracked until late in the 3rd game.

Personally, one of my best nights of the season: 278, 210, and a 226 for a 714 series! Game 1: 9/spare in frames 1 and 2, 9 straight strikes, then a stubborn 4 pin in the 12th! Only had one open all night, a nasty 4-6-7-9-10 split in game 2! 21 strikes and 10 spares! Used the heavier ball and it was tracking well!

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the rest of the season!

Tough league night last evening -- my scores: 174, 169, and salvaged the night with a 213 for a 556 series. Team wise, we lost 3 out of 4. Started the evening with the lighter ball, it just had no punch! Switched to the heavier ball at the end of game 2 and at least ended the night OK. Game 3 was the only one we won, and we won it in the 10th frame!

We are having the first half roll off on Thursday -- we tied for first so this will determine who gets the BIG $$$!

I went to bowling today because I knew DH wanted to go. Poor guy has been cooped up with me being sick for two weeks now. I feel so much better, but it was a mistake to go. My first two games were great! 152-145. By the third game, I was wiped out. Coughing had come back, and I was just plain tired. 88 was the best I could muster... but I still bowled well overall. I learned that if I am tired my balance is off and my timing goes south...
I hope to be closer to normal by Saturday, as that is church league night. If I can put into practice what I've been learning, it will be a good evening.

Leah, thanks for asking about my dog-bitten hand. It's back to normal color but still swollen slightly. Getting better daily.

I wish my bowling was improving daily. An abysmal night. Even having taken a pain pill before league, my back kept cramping as I let the ball go keeping me from getting a deep knee bend and being consistent with my shots. Only one double all night, just four missed spares and three missed splits. 169-168-155 = 492, dropped a pin in average and team lost all seven points again. In two weeks we've dropped from 9th to 14th and now even lower of 22 teams.

Ah well. Practice again Sunday. Always hopeful it will come together one day. -- Lou

Got in a good practice set this afternoon -- 191, 200, and a 198 for a 589 series. The 198 game was "clean" -- just not many strikes -- but spare practice is a good thing. Stuck with the lighter ball and it reacted pretty well. It'll be the ball I use next Tuesday in league play.

I haven't bowled in 3 weeks so my scores were all over the place on Wednesday. They were 202, 137 and 215. I just couldn't figure out the lane during the second game. I split my points for the night. It wasn't too bad of a night.

First league night of the new year: 195, 160 (YIKES!), and a 199 for a 554 series. I had to switch to my lighter ball late in the 2nd game as by then I had my 3rd major split in just that game alone (had a total of 6 all evening!). My back is still not 100% and I think I just was not getting the kind of torque necessary for the heavier ball to do it's thing. The lighter ball reacts more anyway, and had much better results. I did not get out to practice last Friday, as I was doing some major outdoor chores that day (tree trimming -- hauled away 700 pounds of tree limbs!), but should be able to get there this Friday.

Team: we won 3 out of 4, 11-1 to start the 2nd half!

I managed to be consistent today! emoticon Granted, the scores we not high, but they were the same. 114-115-115. I stood in the same spot, threw at the same mark each time on the first throw. I stood in the same place to go for the spare, too. But I am not used to using my Karma for spares, and today was the first time I tried to use the Karma. I found I can use it, and the curve will work in my favor. More practice,and I will improve. Something has improved in that I wasn't throwing the ball all over the place. I was hitting in almost the same area each throw, just the pins didn't cooperate! LOL! I was hitting the headpin almost every time. THAT is an improvement! There were a few times where everyone said I was robbed! LOL! So, overall, I am making progress! emoticon

Well, my good games went out the window tonight! LOL! I did manage to save my last game...
86-95-166. Such inconsistency! it didn't help that I have a horrible cold, cannot breathe, and my balance is off. I finally figured out how to adjust for the balance by 3rd game. Oh, well! We won one game and lost pin count. There will be another day!
I was SO proud I managed to avoid the sickness I was exposed to from the week before Christmas until yesterday! At 1 am this morning, I started sneezing and have the whole nasty cold thingy. I've used the Neti pot and taken coricidin, so that's about all I can do besides eat right and drink lots of liquids. Could be far worse.... many people around here have the flu. I'll take a cold and sinus issue over the flu any day! This too shall pass!
Lou, how did you get bitten?!? So sorry! BTDT!

Back to league tonight. The opposing team had two 200+ subs. Added with their lowest average bowler averaging 191 and the two subs shooting 736 (with a 299 game) and 655 and their regular fourth bowler hitting 711, we got shellacked all seven points.

Very slow start, couldn't get lined up until last game using a ball I haven't used in this league, one I had the pro shop guy rough up for me. Total of seven missed spares (two were the 6 being chopped off the 6-10) and three missed splits. 154-149-210 = 513. I'll start with that last game ball next week.

Practice will be on Sunday again, six or seven games. The dog bitten hand has turned from purple and yellow to just yellow and is still swollen but it was being out of time and misaligned the first two games that was the problem, not the hand. Always hopeful. -- Lou

Patrick, I think from previous posts about my back problems that I truly do feel your pain. My lower right often cramps as I get ready to release the ball. Guess all that weight and dropped shoulder puts strain on that area of the back. We mdidn't bowl last week; pick up tomorrow. On 12/19 five missed spares and four missed splits again cost me a better series. 182-199-168 = 529, dropped a pin in average, team won 5 of 7, putting us in 8th place of 22 teams with three weeks to go in the half.

I had a lesson two Mondays ago. Shot 184-156 = 170 average for two warmup games while instructor finished with another student then bowled and discussed slight changes in my stance, pushaway, and release for an hour. After he left I bowled three more games: 222-237-256 = 715 = 238 average.

Last friday night a buddy and I practiced five games and I did terribly. Thing is I had a dog bite my bowling hand the night before and i probably shouldn't have bowled but you all know how hard it is to stay away from the lanes. Sunday, a couple of guys and I practiced seven games. had three decent ones in the middle: 236-204-180 = 620 = 207 average but the other four games were not good. My hand is still purple and yellow and sore but I'll give it my best tomorrow night after i rub some balm into it.

Not surprisingly, had a rough night last night -- 154, 170, and a 189 for a 513 series. Back was not quite in bowling shape, plus not having picked up a bowling ball in 2 weeks showed. The one irritating part was not one, but TWO 7-10 splits on solid pocket hits last evening! Oh well...

The really good news is that my teammates carried me -- we won all 4 and are off to a hot 8-0 start to the 2nd half of the season! We tied for first place in the first half, so there will be a rolloff at the end of the season. A nice problem to have!

I am planning to get in some practice on Friday. Going to make a point to stretch out my back before I start. It does feel OK today.

Did not practice last Friday but back is feeling MUCH better. Had another chiropractor appointment this morning (my normal monthly appointment) and my Dr really noticed the improvement. I plan to bowl in league play tomorrow -- I'll just be bowling cold (no practice).

Chiro appointment went well -- I'd say my back is feeling 60-70% better. I'll know I am at 100% when I can touch my nose to my knees when I do my AM yoga! Unfortunately, either I got DW's tummy bug sometime after that, although nothing like she experienced over the weekend, so I was pretty much in my recliner under my comforter most of yesterday. Feel 100% better today, have my appetite back, etc.!

One of my teammates messaged me last evening that we had won our first two games last night. Still waiting to hear how game 3 went, but the worse would be a split.

Hoping my back feels good enough to get some practice in on Friday, although we have company coming Friday evening, so it all depends if I can get my chores done. In any case, I'm not going to push it. I really want to bowl in league play next Tuesday!

How did the Chiro visit go, Patrick?
I had a good day today... 145-132-117. I learned a few tips from one of the pros watching, so my plan is to go try to practice some on Christmas afternoon. I have a $5 birthday certificate to use before 12/31.

Well Monday is here and back is just as bad as on Friday. I have a chiropractor appointment this afternoon at 3:30PM, but have already requested a sub for bowling on Tuesday. I simulated my approach on the lanes in my kitchen this morning and just swinging my arm caused a lot of back pain (and that was without a bowling ball!), so I do not want to penalize my team, not to mention screw up my back even worse!

Hopefully I'll post some more positive news in the next few days...

Last night went well... we were minus a member, and we still won 2 games and took the pin count. Ending up with 6 points was good. Last night was a "positioning" round? I didn't do great, but not terrible... 104-114-121. At least I went upward in score emoticon DH had a 190 (the second game) before his shoulder went out.
Not doing anything for the holidays except going to Church. That's what it is all about anyway!
I hope everyone has a good holiday, however you celebrate.
Hard to believe another year is gone. Let's Spark the New Year like we've never done before!!

No practice for me today. Back is absolutely KILLING me! It has not been 100% since the end of October, and today it pretty much feels like it did that morning at the end of October when it felt like someone whacked me with a baseball bat! I saw the chiropractor on Wednesday and have another appointment on 12/29, but if it does not start improving by Monday I'll be back there sooner!

Tuesday evening results: 159 (UGH!), 188, and a 215 for 562 series. Really struggled to find a god spot on the lanes in game 1, got a little better in game 2, then pretty much had it down in game 3. Team-wise, we won all 4 so we should be very close to 1st place!

LOL Patrick. never heard 12 consecutive strikes over two games called a wrap around 300. The most often used term is a Varipapa 300 after PBA pro and hall-of-famer Andy Varipapa. He was as well known for his tournament prowess as he was for his amazing trick shot ability. Check out videos of him on YouTube:

615 practice series yesterday for me (183, 216, 216). Thought I was going to get a wrap around 300 as I finished game 1 with 4 strikes and opened game 2 with four more, but ball came in light in the 5th frame so that ended that fantasy! Overall a good session. As usual, looking to carry what I learned to league play on Tuesday night.

Another night tonight of consistently hitting the pocket and carrying strikes. Should I be happy or sad? I'll take happy because I have to believe one night the hits will carry for a terrific series. But team went 7-0 and my average went up a pin despite scoring lower every game: 200-181-169 = 550. Only two missed spares all night but one missed split game one and one game two and two game three so overall a good night. emoticon -- Lou

Much better night in Tuesday league play! My scores: 190, 235, and a 203 for a 628 series. The only irritating part was that I had one open in each game but at bad spots -- game 1 it was a split in the 9th, game 2 an easy miss in the 10th, and game 3 an easy 6-10 conversion missed! But I did convert all my 10 pin opportunities -- 6 of them -- and had a good line in games 2 and 3. Team-wise, we had a another tie in game 1 -- what are the odds of two ties in two weeks! Good news is that we pummeled them in games 2 and 3 and took series. Game 2 we set the season high for team scratch game with a 122, and that was with one blind score (our top bowler called out sick and we could not scrounge up a sub).

A good night all the way around!

Got 50 bonus points for team this morning on spin... emoticon
DH bowled his first 208 game today... best in his life! He is definitely improving in the bowling department! My best tonight was a 132... We won two games and pin count against the first place team tonight...thanks to DH's outstanding scores for the evening. emoticon
Lou, I have one Cardigan Welsh Corgi who is 9, and a Mexican Redheaded Amazon parrot who is around 25. He will outlive us, we think! LOL! I would love to have another Pembroke or Cardigan puppy to show, but I cannot handle that and DH. So until Chevy crosses the Rainbow Bridge, I will be a one dog owner. It has been 37 years since we have only had one dog in the house.
Sparking is going well. I'm able to ride recumbent bike about everyday for at least 30 minutes.
Was on retreat yesterday and today.

Glad the suggestion worked, Patrick. It helped me stay in the pocket last night with only one split. So far this season splits have killed me -- usually 6 or more a night. A friend gave me the tip to keep the speed up on all shots and it has been working well. I'll tell Mike, the friend that his idea worked for you during practice. emoticon -- Lou

A 621 practice set yesterday. Really concentrated on form and speed using my heavier ball and it paid dividends! A few other changes:

- Brought my bowling balls in from the car and gave them a good cleaning (plus they stayed warm vs sitting in the car and being cold!)

- Used the arrow on the 10th board as my "go to" target for my ball. I have been trying to throw to a spot way down the lanes so decided to change it up...

- Did not try to overthrow the ball (too much speed). That way, as you suggested Lou, I was able to keep my speed consistent for all 10 frames.

We shall see if this translates into improvement on Tuesday...

A frustrating scoring night tonight. Had two Brooklyn hits and one first ball gutter, every other shot was in the pocket but 6 or so 7-pins and about 6 10-pins plus a few 4-pins kept me from scoring a terrific series if only a few of those hits were strikes. I was rolling the ball really well, timing was good after last Sunday's practice.

But by not carrying those single pins the best I could do was:

195 (with one missed split)
172 (one missed spare)
184 (two missed spares) for 551 series. Team won 3 of 7.

Have to keep working on the timing but happy overall with how I bowled tonight. -- Lou

Patrick, could it be you are letting up in the second half of the games without realizing it? As you know, that leads to slower ball speed and hits higher on the headpin. What types of leaves are you getting the second halves?

Team and I continue to struggle. I had a 190, 171, and a 187 for a 548 series. What was maddening last night was that each game I started with 3 or 4 strikes in the first half then faded in the 2nd! No clue what is going on! All I can do is keep practicing and hope the trend changes. As a team we tied the first game, lost big in the 2nd, and lost the 3rd by 7 pins! I believe we are now out of first place.

We were off from league last Friday after Thanksgiving but practiced Sunday with some guys and averaged 193 for the six games. Changes in timing are working, I hope, and carry over to this Friday's league.

Not so good night last evening: 172 214 192 for a 578 series. Was only able to find a sweet spot in the 2nd half of game 2, the rest of the night lots of first ball 9's and a few nasty splits. Except for our leadoff bowler, the rest of the team struggled in the same manner. Other team was on fire the first two games so they ended up winning 3 out of 4. I think we are now tied for first place. Hopefully we'll break out of our funk next week!

Nearly every decent bowler admitted the lanes were funky Friday night. A 215 bowler on our opposing team shot 504, to give an example. My last game and series were high on our pair: 141-175-229 = 545, held average, team won 5 of 7. Six missed spares but only two splits. Have to concentrate more on spares, missing so many is killing 600 series so often.

We're off this week (day after Thanksgiving) but practiced six games yesterday, may try to get a few in tomorrow then next Sunday again. -- Lou

Our league's center uses LeagueSecretary.com but if the counter person entering the data week to week messes up then it throws the stats off and is often difficult to correct. I liked the old way where the league's secretary compiled everything but that's how this center runs things for its leagues. Hope you get it straightened out.

Tuesday evening results: 196, 237, and a 223 for a 656 series. Average should go up a pin or two! The stat sheets were all messed up so none of last weeks scores were entered in. Not sure how that is happening since it was my understanding that our league secretary uses software we (the league) authorized for purchase a year ago. May need to ask some questions if the same thing happens next week.

We split last night, but the 2nd place team lost 3 our of 4 so we are still very much in 1st place. We managed to go 6-2 against the high handicap teams the past two weeks, which is pretty darn good (nothing against high handicap teams -- really keeps us lower handicap teams on our toes!).

Leah, you sure have had a rocky time lately. It's happy news that your husband is progressing so well and that your scores are improving emoticon but sad news that you had to say goodbye to your beloved doggie emoticon . I had to do the same in January but still have Thumper the Shepherd for company. Do you have other pets?

As for the rules, if your league is sanctioned by the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) -- www.bowl.com -- then the league must follow rules established by USBC and any other rules your league members vote in. Even if the league is not sanctioned (NOT recommended!) then following the same USBC rules means there are standards everyone will follow. This includes rules to handle any disputes, etc. Bowl.com lists the many benefits of sanctioning such as bonding of the league's money in case of theft or malfeasance by the treasurer. Everyone can still have fun.

We didn't bowl Halloween night but the week before was disappointing for me: 137-166-193 = 496. After raising average nearly 5 pins in two weeks, this week dropped it 2. Team went 2-7.

After that I wondered if the changes I'm making in my game would ever pay off but three good practices has me thinking maybe things are definitely improving.

Last Friday was a good example. I went high on the headpin 3 times and missed it to the right 2 times. Every other shot was in the pocket but the scores don't reflect that success: 164-199-182 = 545. So many single pin spares. Just couldn't get the strikes. Could have been so much better. Sure felt good to be confident in my shots again though. I think that is one thing I have lacked. Confidence allows us to roll aggressive shots. Team went 3-4, having a tie in 3rd game. We're still in the bottom quarter of 22 teams. Our two new league bowlers are trying and are fun to be around but their scores are pretty low. Ah, well, we're a team and do our best each week.

We've been trying to discern if we want to move back into the city of Charlotte... DH is having some more brain issues, and we are not sure if living out in the boonies is the best thing any more...
So, I've not been on SP too much other than the basics.
Here is my score report for the church league last Saturday...122-92-113. DH meanwhile had his best night ever... 187-149-159! For someone who could not coordinate feet and hands 2 years ago, he is doing AWESOME!
Yesterday at Senior Fun Time, I was a bit better...143-132-106. I was tired going into the first game. I'd taken my 13 1/2 year old Cardigan that morning to the vet to allow her to leave us in peace. She had congestive heart failure, and was only going to go downhill. She left us peacefully and with dignity.
My consistency is improving. If I would practice more, I would be even better. Perhaps when the moving issue is resolved I can get in a weekly practice session again.
Hope everyone is doing well. I remember all of the team in my prayers.
Looks like Winter is approaching. Stay warm!

One of my best practice sessions in a LONG time this afternoon: 212, 244, 246 for a 702 series! Split the first game between the light and heavier ball, but heavier ball was reacting better so games 2 and 3 all heavy ball. Hoping this carries into next Tuesday when it counts!

Back at league play last evening after a 1 week break due to a fun trip to Jamaica! 210, 212, and a 174 for a 596 series. Had a chance for a 600 series but left a ringing 10 pin on my second shot in the 10th of the 3rd game. Buried them on shot #1, but 10 pin would not budge on shot 2! Overall not a bad night considering I had not picked up a ball in two weeks. Arm is feeling it today though! Team won all 4!

emoticon My scores were much better yesterday! 137/121/143 for a 401 series. I was pretty consistent, and felt good about how I bowled. I hope to do as well tomorrow. I tried to stand at the same spot and target, and saw where I needed to adjust during practice.. For the most part, I was successful.
Hope everyone has had a good weekend. Cannot believe it is November 1 on Saturday!

Just a 553 series last evening. My lighter ball was not finishing well and should have switched to the heavier ball which I was using for cross lane spares. The good news was that we swept all 4 again this week against the 3rd place team so we will have a comfortable lead in 1st place. We all really want to win the 1st half season title!

emoticon Well, scores aren't fantastic, but I am more consistent. My average is 115.43 right now. I'm inching up to 116...LOL! The Senior games are lots of fun, and I am finally learning to get the ball out in front of me and use the curving to my advantage. I wish I could practice more as I used to in the beginning, now that I understand better. But I am grateful for my weekly games on Mondays. DH has his average up to 150. Church league team is not doing so well. They are using 230 to figure handicaps. DH says he isn't going to bowl next year because they are emphasizing "playing by sanctioned rules" than just having fun. We'll see when April gets here. Perhaps it is time to move on. I would like to stay. I don't want the people who are "taking over" to stop me from enjoying myself. If they want to play as if they are in a tournament, that's their loss... the money is very important to them, it seems, than the fellowship. Such is life...
Anyhoo, I am not giving up! I'm slowly Sparking away! Moved my step goal up to 5000 steps a day, and I am beginning to consistently reach the goal. emoticon
When I had my physical, all of my numbers were great. No cholesterol issues, no diabetes, and BP was so good I am taking 1/2 tablet of HTZ as a preventative measure. Doctor was very pleased. The Rheumy doc was happy with me too. They both want me to keep losing weight and exercising as I have been doing. There will always be the usual aches and pains that come with growing older and the Rheumatoid Arthritis. My Fibro is under control, too. I am very blessed!
The holidays are about to commence, so I hope everybody will have a great Holiday Season. The year has flown by! emoticon

Another good series, Patrick! emoticon on holding onto 1st place.

Last night was just blah, only a couple of doubles and one turkey, 3 missed spares, and 3 missed splits, another one in 10th frame of last game. I started to move my feet a board and a half left in that frame because I had been high on the headpin the frame before on that lane, but I didn't. Figured to put a bit more speed on the ball but, of course I slowed it down and hit high for a 4-7-10 split. Lesson learned: Listen to my instincts.

166-189-189 = 544. Held average but team went 0-7. Position round next week. We'll be in the bottom third of the league. emoticon -- Lou

Tuesday league results: 246, 205, and a 193 for a 644 series. Game 3 should have been better, but opened with and closed with a 4-6-10 split and an easy 10 pin miss in the 9th. Good news is that we swept all 4 during position week, so we will still be in 1st place.

Last week we also bowled a vacant team (we have 23 teams in our league) and won all 7. More splits and missed spares for 177-157-179 = 513.

Tonight, though, I missed 4 of 5 splits but no spares for 215-184-197 = 596, raised average 4 pins and team won 5 of 7. The frustrating part of tonight was missing a split in the 10th frame of every game. Could have added another 30 pins or so with a spare or strike instead of the splits. Still, to make all of my spares was very satisfying.

Another inconsistent evening last night: 161 233 181 for a 575. Game 1 I could not get the ball to finish plus left 3 easy spares, so changed to the lighter ball in game 2 and was rewarded with a 7 bagger! Game 3 another slow start but finished with a 4 bagger to salvage that game. I'll be practicing with the lighter ball on Friday. My arm is feeling a little fatigued so I think the switch to the lighter ball is the right move.

We bowled against the vacant team (we only have 9 teams this season) and had to post at least a 1018 to "beat" them, which we did for a 4 game sweep. We were in 1st place going in to last night so we will still be there next week.
