FINALLY got some practice in yesterday! Had planned to do so on Friday but the alleys closest to my house changed their hours AGAIN! Now open at 5pm on Fridays! Anyway, our plans yesterday changes, so I was able to get in 3 games at my league house. 149, 200, and a 225! Had lots of success standing on the 11the board so that is where I will start on Tuesday for league play!

Hi all.
Patrick, misery loves company, right? Wrong. This was just an off week for you.
Lou, I think your scores were good. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
I did indeed keep with my old ball for this week and I rolled over my average each game.
163,155,157 for a 475 scratch series. I will definitely take it and hope my two weeks of struggles have given way to normal. And we bowled a team that was only one pin off our handicap so it was competitive and we split the series.
Happy bowling to all this week.

My roller coaster ride continues: 125 (really??), 213 (yea!) and a 141 (really??) for a 479 series. Game 1 I wrote off to no bowling at all for the past two weeks. Game 2 was sweet! Game 3...ARGH!! Despite all that, we captured 28 out of 35 points and I bet my opponent in games 2, 3 and series (he was not having a good night either!).

I just need practice! Hopefully Friday...

A 1982 ball, Cat? Whatever works and it did, didn't it? You going to start with it next week?

The past several weeks I have tried to make a very aggressive high hooking ball work during league on mid-heavy oiled lanes. The ball is too much for the amount or lack of amount of oil and consequently my average has taken a nosedive.

Game 1 -- 178 -- two missed spares and a split
Game 2 -- 148 -- three missed spares and a split
Game 3 -- 160 -- one missed spare and a split. = 486.

Team won 1 1/2 points of 8 and fell to 19th place of 32 teams.

Not happy scores. No doubles to make up for any of the open frames. So tomorrow night I'm going back to the ball I used the first few weeks when the average was higher and use it and the straighter line that was more successful, plus keep working on spare conversions.

Lou

Well, I continued with my , what do I call it?, poor bowling.....
First two games were 149 then 127. But then I rallied in the third and rolled a 174.
The team lost the first game but won the next two and total pins so all is good.
I switched to my 1982 ball in the third game and gained back my speed and confidence.

Sorry to read of your bike mishap Cat and your ankle trouble Patrick. Prayers for quick healing for you both.

Is there a bowling prayer for me to get my spare converting game back?

Last Wed. same old, 4 missed spares and 6 missed splits. Finally got a line last game.
153-163-196 = 512. Team won 4 of 8 points. Back at it tomorrow night.

Since I can't do the league tomorrow, I went to Senior Fun Day today... not too respectable. 122-109-167. UGH.

Goodness, we are all falling apart!
I didn't do well last Tuesday. 106-127-111. UGH. Going to be absent this week. A dear friend's hubby is having major surgery Tuesday morning, and she asked if I would keep her company at the hospital. More important than bowling! Sending DH, hopefully. He doesn't like to go anywhere with out me, but since we moved only 5 miles from the lanes, he can manage to go... My not being there and being absent would be better than If I pre-bowled, probably.
Lou, you've been in my prayers.
Hope you heal quickly Patrick and Cat!
I used to love riding a bike, but it would not be smart for me to try at this stage in my life...LOL! I've two left feet I can barely walk on. Maybe roller skates???
Keep Sparkin'!

OMG! I lost 7 pins of average today as I bowled worse than I have bowled in years.
136,109,127 for a 327 series. What the heck??
Other than I fell off my (new) bike last week and have cuts and bruises on my bowling arm and leg there was nothing different.
Next week................
Good luck all.

Sometimes progress comes in slow steps, doesn't it Patrick? Way to win your points and finish strong in the 10th. Enjoy vacation.

Had a good practice session yesterday with a new to me ball given to me by a bowling buddy. Had maybe 25 games on it. Hooks more than the ones I was using. 211-159-237=607. Game 2 got slow and had too much hook and this splits. Have to remember to keep speed up when I try that ball in league tonight.

Last week we got snookered and won only 1 point of 8 dropping from 5th to 12th place of 32.

Game 1 had 2 missed spares and a split -- 185
Game 2 had 1 missed spare and a split -- 185
Game 3 had 2 missed spares and 2 splits -- 148 = 518.

Last evening's league scores: 153 (YIPES!), 190 and a 191 for a 534 series. Game 1 was a mess! Splits, easy missed spares. A few strikes in a row at least keep it from being a disaster! Game 2 was better...until frames 8 and 9...ugly split in the 8th, easy miss in the 9th. Fortunately my teammates and I were chatting between frames and my one teammate brought up how he gets a deeper trajectory into the pocket by moving up in the approach a few inches. I took his advice to heart, and proceeded to punch out the 10th! More strikes in game 3, but a couple ugly splits held the score down, though I finished with 29 pins in the 10th! Progress...

Team-wise, we only won game 3, but I won all 3 of my games against my opponent, so I earned 5 points for the team!

I'm off next week (vacation), and won't get back until late Sunday the 14th, so no time for practice. But I do need to start getting in some practice time.

Hi all. Thought I was posting each week but see I missed one.
Glad you are back and doing well, Lou.
Sorry for the loss of your friends, Lou and CC.
I am bowling well this season. Last year I ended with 151 avg and this year I am up to 157. There have only been one or two games below my avg so far.

Sorry for your loss, too, Leah. Too bad life interferes with our bowling, huh?

A 13-year-old glove Patrick? That's about as old as some bowling balls we have isn't it?

Last week there must have been a sewer leak on our end pair of lanes because there was a bad smell when I was on the lanes -- 8 missed spares and 3 missed splits. They could have put a pin a foot in front of me and given me a ball 10 feet wide and I would have had trouble making a spare I was that off.

169-183-138 = 490. Team won 4 of 8 and stayed in 5th of 32 teams, 3 points from 1st after 4 weeks.

Practiced with a new to me ball and drilling yesterday. Eager to see how it works tonight.

Added a tip to that section based on two weeks ago after getting to the lanes late from the hospital visiting my friend. Hope it helps you all one day.

Last night's league scores: 191, 179, and a 166 for a 536 series. 2 splits in game 1 held that game back, 3 easy missed spares in game 2, and at least that many in game 3 plus a split. No practice this past week, hoping to get out on Friday. I did change my wrist guard out to an older one. The one I had been using has a metal brace that sits along the bottom of my wrist, and it caused my arm to bruise a few weeks ago and again next week, as I found with my new ball I am having great luck converting cross lane spares with a pure straight ball, so the metal brace was literally causing blood vessels to pop! My older one (a mongoose) has no such brace. I do need to order a new one - that brace is like 13 years old!

Team-wise, only captured 10 out of 35 points. Our anchor bowler is struggling a bit. None of us are helping him out.

Always next week... emoticon

Yesterday's league was interesting. We played the last place team, and they had the highest handicap of any team. DH and I didn't bowl badly, nor did our other team member. We only got one game... the other team got two games and pin count, due to their handicap. It's OK, because they were lots of fun to bowl with! We laughed the whole time! And THAT is what it's about!
Hope everyone is doing well. Very hot here... over 90 every day and no rain. I'll gratefully accept whatever we have... People are hurting all over the world due to more than just warm temps!
My scores yesterday were 151-97(UGH!)-135.

Glad you and the kitties are well, Lou! You were in my prayers! My family in Houston is cleaning up and assessing their situations, too.
I lost a very dear friend of 40 years this past Sunday. I know he is at peace, but my heart hurts... Sorry for your loss, Lou! But friends are friends forever when you know you will see each other again... emoticon
Patrick, your scores don't look too bad to me! LOL!
I'm enjoying the league bowling, so that's what counts. DH is having a good time, too. We hope we place above the bottom team-wise at the end. It isn't about what you win or where you place!
Keep Sparkin!

Glad to hear everything is in good shape for you Lou.

Tuesday's results: 157, 206, and a 165 for a 528 series. Game 3 should have been better, but I'm sure I did not throw ball fast enough in frames 9 and 10 and left nasty splits! I did pick up a 4-7-9 split earlier in game 3! I need to get some practice! Team wise we got hammered! I think only 5 points!

Hey Cat, Leah, and Patrick ~~ Thank you for posting. You are truly appreciated.

It has been a bittersweet couple of weeks. Two previous small house leaks worsened during the storm. Waiting for the roofer to schedule an appointment to check out the roof and provide an estimate. The two sheds and all cats, here and down the street, are okay. I cut up several large tree limbs by hand since I don't have a chainsaw but it was good exercise for my bowling arm and shoulder. Probably two weeks left of bagging tree debris. Very fortunate compared to others, especially to those in the islands, then and now.

Plus, last Wednesday before league I had my last visit in the hospital with a friend of more than 40 years before he died a couple of days later.

So, sorry for being absent. You three have done wonderfully. Keep up the good scores and posting. I enjoy reading how you're doing.
****************************************
****************************
Two weeks ago, 6 splits but only 2 missed spares. Team won 3 of 8 points. My "mentor", tournament partner won our singles match but I'll get him next time.

168-211-155 = 534.

Last week ~~ 2 splits, 2 missed spares, 201-199-185 = 585, team won 6 of 8 and is in 5th place 2 points from 1st heading into tonight.

I have a story to tell about last week after the hospital visit and a new tip but will post that later. Have to shower and get going to league.

We lost all 8 points, but not by much! We bowled the #1 team, and they only won by 3-4 pins each game, so I don't feel bad. These guys bowl several times a week.
I had 141-111-134(386) for scratch and with handicap my total was 560. It's fun, and that is what matters!

How did the weekend go?
The weather wasn't bad this morning, so we were able to go to bowling. We took all 8 points... My scratch was 406...134-120-152. Handicap was 57 today. Total was 577 with the handicap added in.
I hope I get better as I go along...

We are just getting some wind and rain here. Our effects of Irma will hit this evening. Mostly high winds and heavy rain. Power company is prepared. Our inconvenience will be nothing compared to what Florida and Texas have experienced, and the devastation the Islands have had.
Remembering 9/11/01 today, too.
Not sure if there will be bowling tomorrow. If there is, we'll go... but not if there is any danger. Not worth it!
Hope Lou and the kitties are good! emoticon Thought of you during the night, and prayed.

Today was our first league date and I did well although I did leave some really stupid pins.
My avg going in is 151. I bowled 151,200,152 so 503 scratch series. I'll take it!
Good luck tonight, Lou. I bet you will have fun.

Good going on the 50/50 Leah! Hope the locker issue is resolved by next week.
*********************************
Patrick, a few months ago I read a tip for 10-pins, or 7s for lefties, that has made a major difference in my 10-pin conversions and might help you, too.

It suggested barely putting the fingers in the ball when shooting cross lane, causing the ball to go straighter since we aren't our fingers them all of the way in as when we make our first shots and thus not hooking the ball as much.

The result for me has been a softer, straighter shot and a much higher conversion rate for 10s and 6-10s. Hope it helps.
*************************************
Got the standings from last week 1 as we head into tonight's week 2. We won 7 of 8 points and are tied for 1st with 3 other teams.

Tonight should be interesting. We bowl a team that has my partner from our state law games tournaments with whom I won many doubles and team titles, and set 2 records. He and I will bowl game 2 doubles against each other and our doubles partners and he and I will go head to head in game 3 singles, the first two times we have bowled against each other.

His doubles partner is a long-time friend and my long-time car mechanic and a former league president when I was a secretary/treasurer. Will be like old home week catching up.

Lou

Off to an auspicious start: 139, 171, 170 for a 480 series. Game 1 was just totally lost trying to find a good spot. About midway through game 2 I kind of found it. The 10 pin was my kryptonite all night -- only covered 1 out of at least 6 or 7. The one positive was my ball speed -- got it up consistently in the mid 13 mph range. Once I get the 10 pin issue settled scores should start to rise.

Not sure if I'll get any practice in this week. Golf outing on Friday. MAYBE this weekend.

Team-wise, I didn't think we did all that good but I believe we got 20 out of 35 points. Or was that the other team? I was confused...

We lost all 8 points this morning... the bowlers we competed against had averages of 181, 185, 190. We did pick up a third bowler, and I think he is going to fit well with us. I was totally inconsistent. 116-108-145. My handicap was 53. We had a good time, and that is what counts! Poor guy joining us was handicapped because they couldn't get his locker open, so he shared my DH's ball and he had to rent shoes. By the time we left, the house STILL hadn't gotten Bobby's locker open! I bet he'll have it resolved by next week he was not happy...
The good thing was they have a 50/50 drawing, and I won it...$22! So we almost got our fee back.
DH says he thinks we don't need to bowl on Mondays. His wrist bothered him today. So we'll play it by ear, week to week.
Patrick, may you have a great season! Hope we ALL do!

That is our league's scoring system:

Game 1 is team vs. team for 1 point.

Game 2 is doubles with our 1st two bowlers vs. their 1st two bowlers for 1 point and our 3rd and 4th bowlers vs. their 3rd and 4th bowlers for 1 point, so two points for game 2.

Game 3 is lead off bowler vs. lead off bowler, for 1 point, bowler 2 vs. their bowler 2 for 1 point, our 3rd bowler vs. their 3rd bowler, our 4th bowler vs. their 4th bowler, each individual match worth 1 point or 4 points per that game.

So, 1 point possible for game 1, two points possible for game 2 doubles, and 4 points possible for game 3's four individual singles head-to-head matches for total of 7 points, then 1 point for total team pins, so 8 points possible for the night.

Took me a while to get used to it but all I need to worry about is helping the team in game 1, my bowler who bowls in 2nd position and I beating their 1st two bowlers in game 2, and me beating their lead off bowler in game 3, and hoping we take series pins.

Thanks for the USBC link, Lou! And your explanation! I think I will give the secretary the extra $2 each to have a standard membership, since it is for a year. Then should there be a tournament we might like to try, we will be covered. Neither DH or I are very great bowlers, but it would be fun to do a tournament once to check it out.
Today we decided to go to Senior Fun, and I got better each game, 113-122-169. I finally woke up by the third game...LOL! Hope I am fully awake when we bowl tomorrow morning, since it counts!
You've confused me about the scoring system, but it don't take much to confuse me! emoticon emoticon

I got a spot on a team in a different center on Wednesday nights at 6:30 last week with a captain I happen to know. emoticon And there were many more bowlers I knew than I thought there would be. A plus to make me feel comfortable.

What I wasn't told was that after the league meeting last week was that we would bowl our first league session. emoticon

All in all, things went well. One missed spare each game and a missed split in game one also.

190-180-191 = 561.

Unknown how team did. Other team had a new bowler without an average so that had to be computed and we had a missing bowler who was going to post-bowl.

This league is called Crazy 8's for its scoring system. Highest average bowls anchor, 2nd highest (me) bowls lead-off, 3rd highest bowls 2nd, lowest average bowls 3rd.

Game 1 is team game worth 1 point to winner.

Game 2 is doubles with our bowlers 1-2 against their 1-2 and our 3-4 against their 3-4 worth 1 point per doubles team.

Game 3 is singles, 1 versus 1, 2 versus their 2, etc.

My partner and I won our doubles and I won my singles but we have to wait to know the other points.

Hi all ~~

USBC dues increased this year from $10.00 to $13.00, their first increase in 10 years and guaranteed to not increase for at least three more years.

This fee covers our sanction through July of next year so if we bowl in more than one fall/spring league we are covered and if we bowl in any summer leagues next summer we are still sanctioned.

Please see the list of benefits of sanctioning here: www.bowl.com/Join/

Many bowlers take for granted that the rules they bowl by, even in unsanctioned leagues, apply but that is not necessarily true. For example, what if your center decides to put in much heavier pins that are almost impossible to knock down? That's legal if the league is not sanctioned. Or, what if your league's money is stolen? Not sanctioned, then there is no bonding of the fees and you are out of luck? Sanctioning protects us in many ways.

All of that said, in addition to USBC's national $13.00 once a year dues, our local association assesses dues, usually up to $10.00 a year to cover the local costs of keeping the local bowler's averages to send to USBC, running local tournaments -- normally one for Youth, Women, and an Open one for all adults --, an awards program, inspecting all of the lanes in all of the centers in your association (in Orlando we have 14) to ensure they are level, checking foul lights, pin decks to make sure the pins set down on spot every time, providing rules interpretations if disputes occur between bowlers and league officers, a small salary for an association manager to oversee everything, and much more.

In Orlando, since our dues went from $9.00 to $10.00 this year, our first increase in years, that brought our yearly dues to $23.00.

Some bowlers prepaid their national dues online before league so on their first league night only had to pay local dues and first night of league fees.

One last thing, some women want to bowl in their state's women's tournaments. If so, they are usually charged a dollar or two additional because the women's state associations are separate from the men's and have their own structures.

I hope this helps clarify. if not, please let me know your questions. I will gladly answer them for you.

Cat, that was $19 each to join USBC... said it was a "basic" membership, and it allows to bowl in just this sanctioned league. If we were going to bowl in more leagues each week it would have been $21. We are totally new to sanctioned leagues, so we just paid what we were told... it was chaos Monday. No one seemed to know what was what. Sort of irritating...
The weekly fee is $13 each to bowl. I think there are 15 three member teams, although the person supposedly bowling with us didn't show up.
I guess we will see what transpires on Tuesday..LOL!

I was amazed that the USBC card went from $17 to $20 this year. Our weekly bowling fee is $15 again this year even though the lineage went up again.

But $38? Was that your USBC card and first week of bowling?

Yesterday was open bowl after team formation and I bowled two horrible games. Couldn't hit my mark no matter what. Ugh.

No one told us we had to pay $38 to be part of a sanctioned league... it's fine. I just didn't have that much extra cash on me. Thank goodness for ATMs... The weekly fee is reasonable.
DH had 149-182-147. I had 114-139-146. I improved as I figured out how to bowl on freshly oiled lanes... The Monday lanes are not oiled before we use them.
There is supposed to be three people to a team. The person supposed to be with us didn't show. Another new experience.. bowling with a "vacant" spot.
There were three people on the team we bowled, until one member's hip went out in the 4th frame of 1st game. So they had a vacant spot, too. We won two games, they got one game and total points. So we split the points. I hope next week will mot be as confusing...
I think it will be fun. Going to make it so, as there are 36 weeks of bowling! LOL!

I, too, do not enjoy conflict. Thus, he loses my bowling and snack bar business forever. I look forward to meeting new people and if I get in this league bowling in the same league with two long time friends.

We need to choose our battles, Lou! I choose to avoid conflict, if I can. The person running off at the mouth will eventually hang themselves as people see their behavior on a regular basis.
SFB went well today... 157-120-129.
We have decided to join a senior league on Tuesday mornings. It is sanctioned, and I guess runs 30 weeks? $13 each per week. It will mean not doing Mondays, but it will be something different.
It is a 3 person team, so we probably will not bowl together. That's fine for me... Again, something different.
First session is tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes...

Real strikes are always nice, aren't they, Cat? And extra days for bowling are, too, right, Leah?
*************************
I'll attend a league meeting this coming Wednesday night at a different center from the one I bowled in this past season and hope to get a spot with a team.

I found out the current center's manager, a past director of our bowing association, has been bad mouthing me behind my back and I have heard him multiple times trash the association as if he made it great and problem free (not true, there are always problems), but since he resigned a couple of months ago he has nothing good to say about the association and makes his remarks loud and in front of other bowlers in his center.

Both of these faults are unprofessional and, although our team won the league last year, are reasons for me to look elsewhere.

Always interesting how a small tweak will make a big difference.
Yesterday was the last of no tap for the season. I did ok but not great with scores of 178,222,151. Not especially good for no tap but I made a number of real strikes which is good.
Next Wed is team formation and open bowling then 9/6 we start league.

Had usual practice with a teammate yesterday. Four games.

First 2 games stunk. Then I noticed the hand position a third bowler with us was using and tried it starting in frame 6 of game 3. Instead of starting with palm under the ball and thumb pointing at maybe 12:30 on a clock, I moved my hand more to the side so my thumb pointed at 11:00.

Proceeded to end that game with 7 straight strikes and started game 4 with 1 for a string of 8 in a row. Had clean game 4 but couldn't catch a break for a double -- pocket hit for 7-10, pocket hit for solid 7, three 10s, pocket hit for 4-pin.

Friday morning will finally get to work with an instructor for an hour. Eager to learn what he notices for me to work on and get videotape on my cell phone I can watch there or plug in and save to my computer.

Last week was the final week of summer league and a first for me including Little League, Intramural sports, school sports, and other bowling leagues and tournaments -- we ended up in last place of 22 teams. emoticon

A typical night for us -- we gave the other team handicap as we have every week, they won game 1 by 73 pins, we won game 2 by 69 so only 4 down for series. In game 3, even their two 170s average bowlers started stringing strikes. Anchor guy began with the first 5, the other 3 had 4, 5, and 6 in a row from frame 2 on, just blowing us away, winning by nearly 200 pins.

Team = 2-5.
Me = 181 -- Missed 1 split
191 -- Missed 1 split
158 -- Missed 1 split and 2 spares (2nd week with only 2 missed spares.) = 530

No senior bowling tomorrow! Have eye doctor appointment. Plan on being inside during eclipse. Will watch on TV. Remember the one in 1960, and being with my daddy. That's the memory I want to preserve. So TV will be enough!
May go practice a bit Tuesday, as I am off that day.

Yippee, Leah! Keep your goal in mind and you will soon reach it. I have confidence in you. emoticon
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Last Thursday night the team won 2 of 7 points from the last place team and dropped into last place ourselves. We bowl them again this Thursday in position round to end the summer league. I have never been on a last place team before and don't understand why we spotted pins to every team we bowled and mostly bowled over averages as a team but couldn't win. Last chance in two nights.

I rolled the ball well and cut my missed spares to two and three splits but couldn't get strikes in game two.

186-162-187 = 535.

Cat, perhaps buying a portable fan may help. Even in our air conditioned centers I see many bowlers, including me, using them, from small ones to larger ones. Too many centers have fans and a/c ducts over the spectator's area but not over the settee and ball return/bowling areas so it gets hot and sweaty bowling.

Last week team won 2 of 7 points. The game we won was by 1 pin when the other anchor bowler got a 9 count on his 10th frame fill ball. Whew.

Missed 6 spares (5 singles pins) and 1 split, but ended game 2 with 4 strikes to help us win that game.

185-179-156 = 520.

Should be able to afford time with an instructor when get paid next Wed. Maybe will help for last night of summer league next week.

emoticon Lou and Cat!
We're heading out to Senior Fun... I've made a few changes, and the past times I have implemented them it has helped. I have moved closer to the line so that I release the ball at the line. Made a world of difference! Making good use of practice and being mindful of how the ball breaks is getting results, too.
Will report in later today!

Lou, I hear ya about the missed singles. There are times I just whiz right past the pins I should easily pick up.
Yesterday was another good no tap day for me with 217, 213 then a dismall 145. Our lanes are 60 years old and there is no a/c and only ceiling fans and two floor/table fans for 16 lanes. UGH. It gets so hot it is nearly impossible to be in there much less bowl.

Last week I missed 200 in game 1 by missing 2 ten-pins, did not adjust to the lanes' transition in game 2, and could not catch a double for 200 in game 3.

Game 1: 183 -- 2 missed 10s
Game 2: 167 -- Washout, 3-10 split, 2-7 split (picked up), 4-9 split
Game 3: 186 -- clean = 536.

Team won 5 of 7.

Tomorrow night and two more weeks to go then three off weeks before fall league starts. I am going to try hard to set aside at least enough from our prize money emoticon , depending how much that is, for 1-2 lessons, plus practice in between the two leagues since no league fees will to be paid from the budget for those off weeks emoticon .

Practiced a couple more things with a teammate yesterday, but need the experienced eye emoticon and sole attention and video emoticon of an instructor.

LOL Cat! I find myself thinking of so many things in only five steps that it messes me up emoticon then once in a while I bowl without thinking and make one of the best shots ever emoticon .

The trick is to practice the physical aspects of our games to the point where we are confident in them, get on the approach, set our grip, aim, and go. Can sure be hard when we aren't able to practice 100 games a week as the pros do, can't it? But we keep trying. emoticon

Good that you're back, Leah. As for your average goal ~~ emoticon !

I think I may be coming back to life...
Went to Senior Fun Bowling yesterday, after three or four weeks absence. Didn't go too badly... 149-126-151. I think I will reach my goal of a 150 average by the end of the year. Gonna give it my best, that's for sure!
Sounds like you guys are doing well!

Had another good no tap out although it wasn't as fluid as the week before.
163,224,195.
I also had to slow myself down after seeing my first game not producing as desired.
Keeping my pace down and trying to even out my footfalls/slide along with trying to keep my arm form and follow through all in the right zone can be a real head game for me at times but I seem to be doing it more lately.
Still haven't had a clean game in over THREE years!

Six total splits and only three missed spares last week but had trouble getting strikes.

174-142-187 = 503.

Team lost all 7 points.

Rolled ball well, though. Still focused on body alignment and faster ball placement in approach. Tuesday in practice, bowling teammate picked up something else -- when I made shots where I turned ball early, thus pulling it inside of target, first two steps were fast. When I slowed down and made sure to feel my heels on those two steps, I made all of my marks and shot over 200.

Something else to work on tonight in league.

Wow Patrick and Cat! emoticon emoticon

emoticon Cat! Keep it going. emoticon

Let us know how the 14-pounder keeps working for you, Patrick. A number of years ago I dropped to 15 pounds with some balls others gave me and a couple of new ones then tried an old 16-pounder I had just to see how it felt. Grip was still good but man it was like using an 80 pound ball. Hard to believe one pound could make that much difference.

Working on angling left shoulder to the lane and putting the ball in motion earlier helped me make a lot of better shots last week. In the second game, a bowler on the other team, someone I've bowled with and against for 30+ years, said I looked like my old bowler self.

Only made maybe six shots where I still turned the ball early although I missed some spares and had a couple of splits.

Game 1: 147 -- washout, 2 missed 10s, chopped 1/2/4/7
Game 2: 235 -- 4/7/10 split
Game 3: 175 -- 2/10 split, 3 count then missed spare. = 557 series.

Team won 3 of 7 points, winning series by 3 pins and I struck out in 10th frame of game 3 to help.

All in all, much better than the past few weeks. Timing was better so release was better. Will keep working on it tonight. Only tonight and three more weeks to go for summer.

Finally I have something to brag about here.
No tap bowling was great today. I rolled 210, 195, and 287 for a 697 series. Other than the last ball on the tenth frame which I rolled a disappointing 7 I had a clean game, with an opening spare and the rest strikes, all real except four. This is the highest score I have ever bowled and the highest series.

Patrick, I am glad to know there is a man that is willing to reduce the weight of his bowling ball. Most are too stubborn to do that. Good luck this season.

First day of practice in prep for the fall season (which starts just about a month from now!): 183, 203 and a 227 for a 613 series! Just got a new ball last week (Ebonite Game Breaker 2 Phenom) and worked like a gem! I decided to go down a pound on the weight (last ball was 15 - this one is 14) and this ball is MUCH less reactive! So I am able to throw to the 10th board and finishes great. Plus with a lighter ball my speed is up over 1 mph (was running in the 13.5mph range) AND am able to use it for cross lane spares!

Still stuck in a bad bowling rut.

Last two week's scores:

185-139-154 = 478 -- Team won 2 of 7 points.

158-176-159 = 493 -- Team won 2 of 7 again.

Since then, instructor started having me working on starting my ball early -- a hard adjustment to get used to after falling into late timing the last couple of years -- and starting with my left, non-bowling shoulder, pointed more toward the lane than being squared up to the foul-line.

I know it will take time to kick in but yesterday's practice felt smoother.

What will tonight bring?

Once again, team won game 1 big then lost next two games but hung on to win series, so 3-4 for the night.

Weird game 1 for me: Missed all four pins of washout split. got double where missed headpin leaving 1 and 2 pins with some pin rolling backwards to knock them down, picked up the 2-10 split but then missed a 4-pin and a 10-pin. = 163

Game 2 -- 1 split. = 187
Game 3 -- 4 splits = 156 = 506.

Instructor tips for tonight -- shoulders up and back in approach, loft ball more, keep hand behind ball not trying to turn it for hook.

Better last week. Started by missing the 2-4-5 but then clean until 9th frame of game 2 when missed it again and guttered then opened in frame 10. Game three a missed spare and a split, no doubles.

192-192-167 = 551. Team won 3 of 4 for 7-7 after week 2, in 9th place of 22 teams, 5 points from 1st.

Good news. League has a strike jackpot. $5.00 for 5 tickets. Buy $10.00 worth, get 5 extra tickets, so we each put in $5.00 and got 10 extra tickets. Pot was $715.00. In third game, a ticket was drawn. Any bowler from the ticket's team could claim it, usually the team's best bowler, and if that bowler struck on his or her next shot, they got the jackpot.

A long-time friend claimed the ticket, slammed the lefty pocket, and left a stone 9-pin. He got $10.00 a pin, $90.00. Because he didn't strike, a second ticket was drawn, one of ours! Our best bowler claimed it, struck and the four of us split the pot's balance.

Actually, three of us took $150.00 each and let Gary have $175.00.

I could get used to this but do not expect it to happen again. But we never know, do we? Already have my $5.00 bill ready for tonight, though. emoticon

So happy to have you back Leah! emoticon

emoticon moving hurt you and hope you will feel better soon. Bowling can be your physical therapy!

My positive practice timing and attitude lasted only until game 1's frame 5 last Thursday then the night resembled almost every fall league session. Missed spares, missed splits, lousy shots, frustration, disappointment.

153-189-147 = 489. Team won 4 of 7 for week 1 with 22 teams of 4 bowlers.

Back at it tonight. Confidence is not high. emoticon

Returned to Senior Fun Bowling today! My series wasn't great, but 375 isn't bad either, since I haven't bowled in probably 2 1/2 months.
Our move took a lot out of me physically. Things are beginning to get back to more "normal" routines.
Weight has been very stable since February, so perhaps now I can focus on losing a bit. Haven 't been as diligent with my lower carbing. Still totally gluten free and not experiencing any RA symptoms. emoticon Only pain has been form carrying boxes or overextending myself.
I hope to be Sparkin' more regularly.
A new 12 week bowling session has started today, so my goal is to make it all 12 weeks!

Had a fun and confidence building practice with a friend and summer teammate yesterday in preparation for the start of summer league tonight.

Started off miserably as usual but switched balls after game 1 and remembered to follow-through forcefully. Short-arming my follow-through has been a year-long problem.

159-215-243-210= 827 = 206+ average.

What was fun was watching him strike out in his 10th frame game 4 for 210. I had made a poor shot in frame 9 for an open washout and needed to also strike out to tie him. Several bowler friends were there watching. Three shots in the pocket to tie! Like the old days. What a feeling.

Fall payout and summer week 1 tonight.

Thanks Cat. People like that sure make it more difficult to keep a good attitude, especially when not bowling up to goals we set for ourselves.

My goals for summer league

1. Ease up on the seriousness.

2. Focus more on spare shots.

We start this Thursday night.

Lou, it's a shame some just have to be the authority of whatever is at hand. I had a guy on my team for a few years that did the same thing and I, too, told him to keep it to himself.
He wasn't a better bowler than me to begin with so didn't have any room to be the authority.
Good luck with your summer league.

We won game 3 last week to win the 2nd half. Contrary to what I had been told, there was no roll-off against the 1st half winner so will have to see this Thursday how league champion is determined. We won more points over the year than other teams so it should be us, right? Who knows.

I finished the season on a dismal note for me. 137-183-179 = 499.

Dismal because shot #1 left a solid 8-pin and I figured I was lined up. Then high for a missed 3-10 split, high for a 6-pin leave where the ball on the spare tickled the pin but it stood, chopped the 6 off the 10, two splits... and game 3 with a four-bagger which, if clean, should have been in the 220s.

Ah, well. New league, new team, same center, same night but an hour later for the summer starting this Thursday. I will ask a teammate to video several of my shots so I will have something to analyze and he and I are going to practice together every week with more video. Maybe these will help.

One thing that was irritating with the team I just finished with, my first time with them, even though I had bowled in leagues and tournaments with one of the teammates, not one same teams, but in the same leagues and tournaments, was that one teammate would not stop telling the rest of us what he thought we were doing wrong on every shot.

The guy I knew, our captain, finally had enough and told him to quit telling everyone how to bowl.

Have you bowled with someone like that?

Irritating as all get out. One time during game two he said to me, "Want me to tell you what you are doing wrong? "Might as well, you've been doing it all night," I told him. "Well, if you don't want my help..." "No, I don't," I interrupted him. "I know what I am doing wrong. If you have a suggestion on how I can correct it then fine, I'll listen, otherwise, keep it to yourself." That's when our captain intervened and told him to concentrate on his own game and to stop telling everyone else how to bowl.

So, scores may not be as high as I hope for this summer based on fall's performance, but I look forward to getting away from him and in a league with higher average bowlers, most of whom I know from other leagues and tournaments and who have always shown me respect for the bowler I was and the accomplishments I achieved over years of competing.

Don't we all just want some bowling love? emoticon

Lou

Sometimes we start out funky and end right and other times it's the opposite. Go figure!
I am bowling 9-tap this summer. It's fun but I believe it adversely affects my regular game due to the one pin leave and no need for the spare pick up.
My Nationals performance was a mystery to me. I am a straight ball bowler so the oil doesn't effect me. I started out with 201 then 198 then 133. This started at 9:30 at night which is just before my usual bedtime so I am not used to bowling or anything else at this time.
The next morning we started at 9am and I started doubles with 197 then tanked to 126 and 129.
Moving on to singles at 1pm I did 130,135,143.
My league avg is 153 and my Nationals avg (don't know why they do this) was 177.
So, as you can see there really isn't a reason why I underperformed, just that I did.

Last week we gave away game 1 which could have wrapped up the half for us by all of us having poor games so tonight we bowl the same team and need only to win one game for the half title then after tonight's three games bowl the 1st half winner one game for the league championship.

I did mention our poor start. Oh my, for me 5 missed spares and a split game 1, then 1 missed spare game 2, and 2 missed spares game 3 with some strikes finally.

136-192-211 = 539. Team won 4 of 7 from team we bowl tonight and are 7 points ahead.

Payoff is next week when summer league starts -- same house, different league, time, and team since current team does not bowl in summer.

Back from the Nationals and side trip to the Grand Canyon.
My first game was 201, second 197, third 133. This was team.
My first doubles game was 198. The next five games were in the 120's and 130's. What the heck?? I just lost it and no matter what I did could not get it back. A disappointing outing to say the least. Oh well.
Good trip and fun regardless.

Two weeks to go. We extended our 1st place lead to 6 points after 2nd place lost a game and we won all 7. We need to win 2 games and series for 5 of 7 points this week since, by chance of schedule, we bowl 2nd place team, to lock up the half.

Then, on May 25, the last night of this league, position round, we will have a one game roll-off again the 1st half winner. Overall league champ receives extra prize money.

Another slow start last week with 2 missed spares and 2 missed splits game 1 and same in game 2 and one missed spare -- my dear old chop of the 6 off the 10 -- game 3.

151-167-222 = 540

Last Thursday team won 6 of 7, tying game 1, to stay in 1st with a 4 point lead with tonight and two more weeks to go. We bowl the team in 2nd next week and may bowl them again the next week in position round to finish the half. Should be an exciting finish.

Got off to a slow start game 1 by chopping 6 off 10 once more, along with two washouts, but did convert the 4-10 split again. Getting pretty good at that. Just need not to leave it. emoticon

Game 2 one missed spare and a 10th frame split (aarrgghhh!).

Game 3 clean with a 3-10 conversion.

177-163-208 = 548.

Last Thursday, team won 3 of 7, is still in 1st, and kept a 5 point lead over 2nd and 9 over 3rd. We have the highest team winning percentage in the league for the year. emoticon

Strange night for my scoring.

Game 1: 190 -- Only open was a 7-10 split but converted the 3-10 twice, the 4-5, and the 1-2-7-10.

Game 2: 213 -- Chopped 6 off the 10 due to slow ball speed, again, on that spare.

Game 3: 150 -- Missed 4-10 split when slid the 4 over to touch and shake the 10 without it going down emoticon , missed the 6-7 split, and a 10-pin, and a 7-pin in the 10th frame, aaarrgghhh! = 553.

Tonight and 3 more weeks to go.

Thanks, Lou. And congrats yourself on your cushy position. Don't lose it!
Will touch base when back from Vegas.
Wonder if any other Sparkers will be there when I am??

Last Thursday cut the missed spares down to five plus two splits, one in a 10th frame, ugh. 189-191-156 = 536. Team went 4-3, still in 1st with a five point lead over 2nd place and a twelve point lead over 3rd with five weeks to go.

Greetings my fellow Spark bowlers.
I have be absent from this team for far too long and I just can't get in the swing of participating in any teams except the one (50+Maintainers) I lead. Sorry.
But, for an update my league ended Wed and my team took 1st for the 2nd half but blew the roll off so we didn't get the league patch.
The last three weeks we lost 3 of four as each of us was inconsistent.
So, the equipment came home with me and I will rest two weeks before bowling in Vegas. The team members are from various locales but most known to me from here or previous Nationals.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Much luck to all you this summer.
