I've been running on the streets or the track lately because I've had a hard time finding time to get to the trails and because we have gone through a really frigid spell here lately. Lows between 1 and 6 degrees and highs at the highest 32 degrees and some days not even that high. And cold wind! But it's supposed to get up to 45 today and up to low 50's by the weekend so I'm hoping to hit the trails then.

On Saturday I did a 7 mile hike. I want to start running again too, which I've slacked off on. I don't make resolutions, but the running is a goal instead.

This time of year is early Summer down under so I have no reason to not enjoy the early morning. But who ever liked getting out of bed at 5:45am (except on Christmas morning)?

I trained through Winter this year but I didn't do early mornings. I have the luxury of free time during the day when the baby is in childcare and kids are at school.

Good on ya' ladies for the commitment to exercise during Winter!

I try to hit trails for either running or hiking every chance I get, but it does get harder this time of year with work and everything. I did manage to squeeze in a short 1 and 1 1/2 mile hike on Saturday when I was traveling and stopped at a trail in an area I was traveling through. Even when traveling I try to find someplace to get some outdoor activity, and if at all possible on trails of some kind. Nothing like being out in nature!

I haven't been on the trails for about a week. I ran my HM last weekend on concrete. I needed quite a few days to recover from my street run.

This week I did my steep hill intervals on Wednesday. Ouch! The good news was that I could go further in 60sec than the previous week. The bad news is that I was still hurting today when I went for my next long run. Quads and hammies, ouch! I had a long hill run today.

Actually it was suppose to be yesterday but I need 2 hours free time. The kids were early out of school on their last day, the toddler doesn't have care on Fridays and my partner wasn't home until 6:45pm. So no time for my run. That meant that to get the run in I had to get up at 6am today and hit the trail...4am the nine year old had a bad dream and wanted to sleep with me. Not happening. So I was in and out his room for half an hour settling him down.

I was not looking forward to my early morning run! But I did it. I was slow but when I got to my long hill (3.4k, 250m ascent) I let blast and got to the top in 20min. Good time for me. I ran home and was a bit disappointed to not have a coffee waiting for me but no one had woken up yet. Shower and dress and then coffee. 9am and ready to start the day.

Attacked my course again, and STILL can't run the hills. Too steep...12K of rugged steep terrain. I spoke with a woman I came across on the trail and asked her if she does the race. She does (I think she was an age group winner from pictures I found) and she said it was a tough race.

So I went home and did some research on how to train to run steep hills. It looks like I need to do several different things:
1. Learn to breath at a high heart rate. There are exercises and techniques for this.
2. Learn to not get psych'ed out by tough courses. Break it down. Visualize each piece.
3. Interval training on steep as hills.
4. Long hill climbs.
5. Run hills on tired legs at the end of a long run.

Today I did intervals. 60seconds up, 120 sec down and rest. Repeat 6 times. Ouch! The hill is ridiculously steep but it needs to be for my training. The course is ridiculously steep as well!

So here's hoping that these 5 elements will get me to a level of fitness that allows me to run, instead of walking and getting DNF'ed because I don't meet the cut-off time.

And I did my interval training at 6:30am this morning! 'pat on back'

11K on the 'burbs trail today. Loads of people, bikers, sun and wind. I run past an airport runway which had some trainees taking off and landing so lots of plane action. I was fast and strong today and felt on top of it.

I've got a HM in 10 days as part of my training (isn't it cool when a HM is 'training'!) and I hope to be able to run it in 2 hours. Looks like it may happen!

Yesterday I did 11k with about 2000ft of ascent. There was some walking mixed with the running. It was a lovely day. I'm pretty tired today. And thank goodness we don't have Black Friday in NZ! Good on all of you for enjoying the outdoors rather than the indoors.

Yesterday I did a hike up to the top of a peak that climbed almost 2,000 feet in 2 1/2 miles. With the round trip up and back and the distance to my car that was parked a ways from the trailhead I did 5.5 miles. Made me so much happier than trying to hit the black Friday sales LOL!

I didn't run but I got in 5 miles of hiking on Friday in the high desert area 2 hours from where I live when I had to travel to that area for work. Then Saturday I went to an area near me by a river and did 8 miles, including a lot of hills as well as along the river in a beautiful area.

Hoping to go back and do more of the same area this weekend. last weekend the weather was very cold and windy with a cold front but this weekend is supposed to be nice.

I've had two rest days and tomorrow is my first run after the weekend efforts. A little bit nervous but my body has held up really well after the weekend thrashing and I feel good. Fingers crossed!

Charity that does sound beautiful. I am considering whether or not to hit the trails today. It's been beautiful weather up until yesterday, when it rained all day. Today it's kind of cloudy and at noon it's 45 degrees. Those are still okay with me. But it's windy and winds are supposed to get up to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph so that is what is scaring me off today. I can deal with the others but I hate the wind!

I love running/mountain biking at night. It's such a different experience. Good on you for taking the leap and not losing those precious hours to train.

I ran in my local 'copper canyons' which is a trail that zig zags up an escarpment. It's quite open and clay which makes it feel like a canyon but hey it's NZ and we don't have real canyons! I enjoyed the run and enjoyed running with my partner.

And to top it all off I saw success in my fitness. I have found it hard to stay in LSD when I go up hills but today I gained over 800 feet ascent without leaving LSD and with my downhill included I averaged 133bpm. That's good for me. I use to sometimes get above 150bpm going downhill!

Weekend is an overnight tramp up above the treeline, camping in the mountain tent, and one pot meals. This is a tramp I have wanted to be able to do for nearly two years. The first attempt was aborted. The second was a shortened day trip but this weekend is going to be success! We get up to 4660 feet (starting at 400 feet) and spend half the trip with stunning views from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean, weather permitting.

I'll report back on Monday.

Had to use my headlamp outside for the first time last night due to the time change. Worked out very well and it was a good tempo run with nobody else on the trail. Can't wait to do it again!

I previously held myself back from running outside at night and lost serious amounts of mileage last season since I hate treadmill running. No more holding myself back now...

Thanks for the wet towel idea. Will try next hot day.

Yesterday I had a birthday run up the beautiful Campbell's Mill Road. This lovely track is closed to vehicles and runs just under a ridge line overlooking our community. It was lovely weather, high cloud, warm and partly sunny. The track is a gentle rise of 1000 feet over about 6.5k. It's cut into the side of the hills so there are little water falls and ferns on one side and a rather steep drop off on the other side. I enjoy running up high. Nice breeze up there as well.

10K's on course today. First peek at the challenge. Well...it will be a challenge! This is mountain running, not trail running. I will need to do quite a lot of technical training to prepare. The route is just never flat after the first 3k's on the road. It climbs on a 20-25% gradient and then is a roller coaster ridge line climbing up to 1000 feet. The trail surface is rocky, rooty, muddy and steep. Easy to trip and requires constant vigilance. No zoning out like an easy trail or the road.

The weather was not great so we exited the track at halfway. We'll return in a fortnight to explore the second half of the course. It took us 2:20 to walk/run the track and we need to do it much faster to make the cutoff time for the second half (which is where the adventure really beginnings apparently).

But it's best to know what we are in for. The World Mountain Running Champion (2000,2001) loves running this track so I guess that's a great recommendation.

Sometimes I wonder what I get myself into! I am a glutton for punishment...

Into 5 day a week training now, my first week every of running three days in a row.
Tues - Track along stream, flat, to horse stables. 45min
Wed - Treadmill...How boring! But efficient when combined with ST. 30min
Thurs - Track along stream, up road (on verge), back through sanddunes. 50min
Spring weather so wind causes havoc but better than driving rain!

Sunday is the reconnaissance mission for the 24 March adventure race. It's local, thank goodness. So Sunday will be a bit of running on flat patches and hiking on the steep bits, 22K in total. Curious to know why it's marketed as adventure race as I'm sure you can hear the 'pfff' of steam escaping from a local Starbucks while walking this track...We shall see, come Sunday!

I'm told that next to long slow distance running, tramping/hiking is the best way to improve endurance fitness. I'm fairly new to both activities but combining them should help push me along.

I did a 3 1/2 mile hike yesterday up a hill. Would like to have run but it was too hot by the time I got out of a meeting and it was all uphill for the first half, then turned around and went downhill back to the car but after the uphill climb my legs were tired LOL.

Recovery Week from last weekend event:
12K easy run, which became 12k "I will run every last ounce of frustration and despondency out of my system". Averaged 155bpm, not Long Slow Distance...but a hell of a way to burn those yuck feelings out the bod.

5 months of training starting next week. March 24th - 22K, 3600 feet ascent, adventure run. Here I come!

I didn't run the trails but I did hike 2 miles yesterday. I was really sick in June for most of the month and still having a hard tme with my stamina. So yesterday 2 miles hiking was great for me. Not the number of miles I was doing a few months ago when I was hiking and running on trails but it's a point in working my way back.

I went 3.2 miles Saturday morning, I only walked the first .3 or so to warm up though and ran the rest. I'm planning to run the same distance today if it isn't too hot.

Yesterday I ran 2 and hiked about 7 miles. I was in Baxter State Park in Maine. What a beautiful spot. Running along the ridge to Baxter Peak on Mt. Katahdin was spectacular!
I'm taking the day offfrom strenuous workouts for stretching and resting. After 2 tough days of hiking, I'm not sore, but I know that my body needs a rest.

4 today. On Sunday I led a hike up Mt. Monadnock. One of the people who joined us is afraid of heights. What started out as a fun hike turned into a labor of love to help this woman summit. I'm glad that she had the experience of hiking Monadnock, but I won't invite many people that I don't know well to go on the trails with me again. My 4 hour train run/hike turned into a 6 hour ordeal.

Day before yesterday I got in 2 miles of trail running. I hadn't been running much the past few months for a variety of reasons and fell into a slump and I'm fighting my way back out of it now. Felt good about what I did. Today maybe a run again on a trail after work.

Yesterday I logged 4 miles.
Yesterday there was only one reason why I went for a run-I made the decision, and I wrote it down. Yesterday all sorts of things got in my way. The weather was bad, work got busy, people needed me, and I had to shop. Everything was eating up my time. Still, I SAID that I would run, so I did. Before I got out of my driveway, I was so glad that I did. I felt the weight of the world leave my shoulders, and for almost an hour, there was nothing more important than me and the road.
My advise to you today: Make a decision just for the health of it, and stick to that decsision!

Logged 4.5 today, 70 degrees in NH, you couldn't beat the weather today! Who would think it was March? I ran the Fort Rock Trail in Exeter, it was perfect, just the right amount of technical (rocks, roots, short/steep hills, and planks) and not too much mud! Hope you all made it out.

4.0. Glad I got out today. Tomorrow the trail will be filled with mountain bikes and weekend warriors. I had the trail alone this late morning. I like that it is uphill out! When I see thirty plus cars at the trail head, I head elsewhere.

Yesterday I logged 7.4 miles. I took my daughter and her friend to Montano de Oro State Park to tackle Valencia Peak. This is a 4 mile ascent from sea level to 1300 ft. Mostly single track with a short section of dirt road. Very steep climbing. We actually hiked much of this as the girls are relatively inexperienced runners. After a brief lunch stop at the top my daughter and I ran 3.4 miles down the backside to the car while her friend and some other friends that had met us there walked back down. Absolutely fantastic day along the coast with some good brisk hiking and and insane downhill single track speed session.

Way to go on the trail run. I know what you mean about hunting season. Luckily for me one of the areas that I go is a state game preserve with no hunting allowed. But there is a lot of forest service land i like to go to also but not when the hunters are out!

Yesterday I ran 4.06 miles, part of it on a trail through a small park we have on the outskirts of town. First ran through some streets then went down into the park and on the trail. About 2 miles of my running was on the trail. First time I've ran on trails in a while. This is not a paved running trail but a little hiking trail that is a little bit of heaven hidden right by homes but feels like being out in the forest.

Did a fun 7 mile loop this am with a great group of trail runners!

How do you guys log your trail miles on Spark? I just end up putting them under my milage tracker. Just wonder how everyone else logs them. I know that I am burning way more cals than the trackers says on the trail days so it's good I am not really tracking cals.
