I'm at 126k and still working on the novel. Might finish by the end of the month, might not but if I don't it will be close. Surprised that I could write this much and be regular about writing. It really shows if I put the time to writing what I can achieve.

Soon comes December and edit time for 2 of my other novels.

Made it. 50k in 10 days. Well, 51k+ cause I have a part of a scene written I haven't added to my count yet but still. I made it a day earlier than last year. Happy with my little victory and will keep on writing tomorrow. I will get this book done this month, I hope. :-)

Great job! You finished something and that's fantastic.

NaNo isn't for everyone. I like it because I can push out that first draft so that I have a whole ton of clay to work with and sculpt later. But I'd never want to share that draft with anyone. It's just a get the first draft done thing for me so I have the infrastructure and can build from there. But for others, it's not the best method of getting a novel done. And I see far too many who use it to go "look at me, i'm writing" but to each their own.

I'm at 41k and still going. I want to get the novel done so I have a finished first draft and get all my first draft writing joy out of the way before I bunker down to edit other novels. Now it just needs to stop getting longer. But the good news is I worried about the YA part slowing me down this month and that doesn't seem to be a problem.

I'm officially retiring from NaNo. Permanently.

I finished "Our Second Baseman is an Alien" last night at a write-in. It clocks in right around 20K.

That's all well and good, but I don't want to keep writing just for the sake of reaching a particular word count. My real goal here was to write a book that my son can share with his 4th grade classmates. In order to be sure I have something I'd be happy for him to read and share with his class, I want to spend my time editing what I've got to make it better.

I've learned it's not all about word count. Just like my failed experiement at writing morning pages, it's not for me.

From now on, I think I'll look at November as an opportunity to take stock of my current writing projects and make a plan for the next eleven months, rather than a month of pressure to produce a certain number of words.

Still sounds like you are making great progress Myrealana. Great to have a sounding board. I wouldn't let a teen read the rough first draft, wouldn't want them to suffer through that, lol. I will have to work on his voice in rewrite cause MC sounds a bit too girly at times but it's far better than my first person attempt was with him.

One of my friends on WDC has made it to 50k already, so I know how you feel but we can't compare our attempts to others. As long as we are writing then we are winning in our own ways.

It's actually easier than I thought it'd be compared to last year. I'm doing a lot of procrastinating too, posting in forums, check facebook on occasion and such but still making my daily goal. Though my hand does hurt a little but it has been aching on a regular basis lately (might have carpal tunnel in right hand). At least it's only minor aches. I plan to get this first draft done by the end of the month, since I don't want a 6th unfinished first draft lying around. lol

I have work today but hope to be at 30k before midnight tonight.

I feel like I'm slacking, but I've managed to average almost 2000 words per day.

I was pushing so hard on my novel in the weeks leading up to NaNo, just writing a couple thousand words feels like I'm on a break.

I'm still struggling with making my work fit for the age group, though. Luckily, I have a very well-read 9-year-old who is reading my daily pages for me and making suggestions.

His first notes - stop using so many words. Just say things, geez, mom! Don't be so flowery.

Yes, sir!

I knew I was missing somewhere I needed to post an update on. oops

I am done with day 5 and sitting at 25,772 words. Averaging 5,000 a day right now, but we'll see what happens when I start the new job that is going to give me more hours. Since my goal is to finish writing the whole first draft, I'm off to a good start.

DCLola, NaNo is definitely not for everyone. I've only done it the real way once, but I've been a rebel several times. It helps me get my word count up, and my first drafts are always just spewed words anyway. Once the story is done I add the five senses, descriptions, emotions, body language, etc.

Day 5! Are you at 8,335 words, yet?

Mine is going well. I'm right where I should be as far as word count.

Unfortunately, I'm not very far along in the story. I'm having a pacing issue, moving from writing for adults vs. writing for kids. I'm going to have to do a LOT of cutting if this is ever going to work as a middle-grade book.

Let me just say at the start, I don't want to be negative, I think all of you are amazing for participating in NaNoWriMo. And I think NaNoWriMo is a totally cool concept.

I have joined, tried but failed to finish NaNoWriMo every year since 2005. This year I have decided that speed writing is not as important for me as the quality of what I write and my well-being while writing so I have already abandoned NaNoWriMo 2012.

I do wish all of you who are still in the running the very best of luck and hope that you finish with a written work you are proud of!

You don't stop doing things because you get old--- you get old because you stop doing things!

In spite of work being crazy yesterday, I managed to get about 1000 words in. It helps having my son commit to doing it with me.

After last night, he is setting his goal at 25K words for the month instead of 50K. He gets almost exactly half my word count every time we sit down to write, and he wants to set something he can realistically hit instead of shooting for the 50K that seems impossible and consistantly falling short.

So far, so good. I've developed a couple of the characters, and they've already revealed some quirks to me that should make the whole thing more fun.

It's almost time. Are you ready?

I went to an interesting discussion at a local library about nanowrimo last night. The speaker is a writing coach who has three books out on writing. It was interesting to hear her talk about the subject of nanowrimo and to see other people who attended the event. Next is the midnight write-in. Woot!

I'm glad you have an idea, Elfmage. I know when the voices in my head are truly insistant about a story, I can't deny them, but I agree with Abby. You need to make a deal with yourself to start working on revisions to one of your previous works Dec. 1. Cross that finish line.

My critique group meets every Sunday afternoon to deliver critiques of the week's submissions - except in November.

For that one month, we meet for our normal 2 hours a week for a "write-in." I put it in quotes, because the fact is that during that time, we never end up writing. We socialize and discuss our books, but the point is we have no critiques due.

Various members of the group take that time off from submitting and critiquing for different purposes. Some people commit to the full NaNo experience - shooting for 50K words on a new project. Others take that time to add to an existing book. Some use the time for revisions on a previous work.

My first year with the group was 2010, and I took the NaNo rules very seriously. I ended up pushing so hard for word count, I killed my idea. When I felt the same thing happening last year, I just walked away.

I have my story idea ready and can't wait for 12:01 on Nov 1. hehehe

Though I have a few people who think I shouldn't do nanowrimo this year. A couple think I need to pick a novel and focus on getting it ready to submit (which would be the novels I need to edit because the first drafts are not something I would send in to anyone) instead of starting yet another new novel. Another thinks I need to do less exercises (so like the little contests on wdc) write and start sending out short stories and such instead.

But I think I'll stick with write crazy word counts in November, and edit work on the rest in December.

My NaNo project this year is actually two middle grade books, tentatively titled "Our Second Baseman is an Alien" and "The Kid in Bunk Six is an Alien." They're about a space alien who comes to live in a suburban neighborhood and tries to fit in with the other kids. I'm collaborating with my 9-year-old son. He and I have gone over plots, characters, etc. and I've got both books outlined and ready to go. As I finish pages, I'll give them to him for review. I'm aiming for readers in the 9-12 range -- those who are ready for chapter books, and like things like the "Origami Yoda" books.

Each one should be around 25K words, which is why my NaNo goal is two books.

That's cool. I remember one year in college I did a little article for the college newspaper about nanowrimo. There were a couple professors even who had taken part or were going to that year, so I got to interview them. It was fun.

I am looking forward to this year. I'm posting on the forums for my regions (since I moved I have a whole new region this year) and there are many writers in the area. I'll get to go to some write in activities this time, which will be fun. Can't wait to start.

I get so jealous when I hear of NaNoers and I can't participate (I'm planning on editing). BUT I wholeheartedly support you all!

NaNo helped me realize I wanted to write, and I got to do a post about it for USAToday's HEA blog:

Greetings

October is also the month where people who are writing during the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) http://www.nanowrimo.org/in November begin to plan and network with other writers. This is the perfect time to acquire writing buddies, to check out the NaNoWriMo forums, make videos, and develop outlines to write from. This year I am writing as a NaNoWriMo rebel because I will be writing my memoir instead of of a traditional novel. The title of my memoir I have begun is titled “Two Step” and is already 40,000 words and I want to expand that by writing more words. I aspire to tell my story of being a Native American in the Mohican tribe walking in the modern world. Many people of heard of Last of the Mohicans which is a fictional book but unfortunately have lead many people to the false idea that the Mohican tribe is extinct. I have had both Native American and non Native American people tell me to my face that my tribe is extinct because of this misconception. Not only are Mohican people here they have a reservation in Shawano county Wisconsin and are many that live there and around the world. I hope in telling my story as a Mohican woman that people can see the thriving resiliency that exists.

I hope you come with my on my creative journey!

*dusts off old nanowrimo forum post*

It's almost time for nanowrimo again and figured instead of starting a new topic, why not just use the old one. Who is ready for nanowrimo 2012?

I'm working on preparing three novels in a nano prep challenge but I'll only be writing one of them in November.

Well another NaNo is over. I didn't reach my 50,000 word goal but I did keep at it and stay attentive through the whole month. Usually I bale by week 2 and i've never gotten above 5,000 or 7,000 before. I've had a blast this time and I feel more inclined to continue with my writing. Over all a good nano year.

Good luck!

So far I have only written first books in series but look forward to continuing them. I'm going to edit my mutant novels in december and those are both meant to be series.

I made it to 125k for nano. Exhausted but very happy.

I was at 122K last night, not done with the second novel, but least I won nano. I will validate my word count tonight, and then work to finish at a not so rushed pace. 2 novels in one month is crazy, right?

I made it to 52k so far. I'm only half way through my story though. My schedule is so busy that I've only had time to write a couple days per week. I am looking forward to finishing the story through and editing.

The month is getting close to being over. How has everyone done so far?

I've made it to 95k and by the end of the 25th I hope to be at 100k. Looking forward to editing in December just to get some time away from writing.

Yay for everyone! *applauds*

I will be at over 65k by the end of tonight. And I've still got more to write. I'm excited because the most I've written in a month before was 67k. I shall overpass it!

I'm doing Nanowrmo as well. I'm at 35K, but I've only had time to write about 2-3 days each week. My schedule is super busy. This is my first book, but I am loving it! I expect that by the time I finish the book though I'll be at at about 150K. My goal is just to get the project done, and the story told.

Sorry I have not been able to check in! The writing is going awesome! It hit 50K 11/13. That was only 2 days ago and now I am at 65K. That's because Sunday I think I did like 14K for the day.

Anyway, I've mentioned my goal was 200K that's why I have been writing at an accelrated rate. It was supposed to be 2 novels 100K apiece, but this one is winding down, so I will do 3 at about 70K.

Week 2 is almost over and I'm still writing! This is the first time I've written through week two and this is the 3rd or 4th time i'm trying NaNo so I'm pretty excited. I'm having a hard time staying on one story. As I'm writing other ideas come to me or i get reminded of an idea i had before and never wrote down. My word count is behind but i'm ok with that. i'm still writing and I'll be working on catching up this weekend (mine runs sunday/monday) i have no plans but write, walk dogs, take care of horse, practice bellydancing, write some more.

As for me, I'm spending a bit of time on SP right now, and then I get back to writing :-) Would like to reach 39K today (only 2K to go today) and, ideally, would like to finish on Monday... That's pushing it a bit, so we'll see :-)
Good luck for your next 50K :-)

I made it to 50k in 11 days. *celebrates*

I am really tired especially since I also had work today but I did it. 2 days faster than last year and I'm so glad to have made it. Now to take a day off before getting back to writing since I have a goal of 100k by the end of the month.

nearly 8000 words today, I'm at 33000. Was really inspired today, so it wasn't tough going. BUT... I also need to study, and doing both on top of normal life is proving a bit difficult....
Wish you all a great writing weekend!

True, it's not for everyone.

I love NaNoWriMo and it helps me get my novel first drafts finished. I have yet to hate a project that I've used for nano. However, I had that happen to me when I had to do a capstone project for my bachelor's degree. I had to do a project that combined Art, Legal Studies and English, so I did a nonfiction book proposal. I loved the idea and thought it would be great but even now, years after graduating, I still wince when I think about that project. It made me hate the idea, really in part because of the hassle it took to get that thing finished and approved in order to graduate.

I've made it to 38k. Think that I'll be at 50k on the 11th, or at least that is now my goal.

I've concluded that, in my world, NaNoWriMo is where good ideas go to die.

It turns the act of writing into a chore instead of allowing it to flow at my pace. When I hit a block, and I need inspiration, normally, I would go back to my pre-writing materials and work through it, or write a short story, or just take a walk. But with NaNo, I feel this pressure - just get the word count - just get the word count.

It's not for me. I don't write for word count. I write to tell a story. When the story hits a pause, I don't want to push through writing crap just to get words on the page.

Last year, I had a good idea. I was in love with the idea. By the end of NaNo, I never wanted to see that story again.

I started feeling that way about my current project - a story I've been wanting to write for over six months. I don't WANT my Penny Parker mysteries to be a chore I resent having to do. I want to stay in love with the idea - not kill it with overwork.

I've learned my lesson. I'm done with NaNo. I'm going to my writing my way. It works, and it doesn't kill my favorite stories.

I finally made it past 25k. It's a couple days later than what I wanted but my goal is flexible. I still have a chance of making it soon, and as long as I get it done by day 12 or less it will be an improvement on last year. The bigger issue will be once I make 50k I need to keep writing. I often quit so I really want to keep going this year and reach 100k by the end of the month.
