Wrote a new flash piece this morning while I was waiting for my database queries to run.

Loving flash fiction. I can write a complete story in an hour. Feels so good to FINISH something.

I finished rough draft of Chapter/Episode/(whatever the current FanFic word is) 2. Now to see if I want to use an unexpected element in the climax, this could require some serious thoughting.

Stared at my laptop for 15 minutes - zilch.
Picked up a pencil and a steno pad, went out to my deck with a glass of Sauvigon Blanc....wrote 3 pages worth of ideas for conflict between protag and antag, and protag and himself.

I'm still so busy with work, I just can't get in the writing time I want. When I do have time, I just want to lay on the couch and read. It's a good thing I have books on my iPad I can sit on the table next to me. I think if I had to actually turn pages, it would be more than I could muster.

I'm getting anywhere from 300-600+ words per day. I'm guesstimating another I should be finished with my 1930's section of my Sci-Fi story today. It is a struggle. I found some original Flash Gordon movie serials on Youtube. They have really helped with that era's understanding of futuristic tech, rocketry, world creating, and names they gave to characters. A Few things the pulp's of the 30's had in common: all the Hero's were very virile, all the evil's were either muscle bound or skinny, and ALL the females good, evil, or alien, were ample breasted and had narrow waists.

I'm 'sketching' out personalities for my supporting characters. One newbie discovery: the supporting characters must have several layers to their personalities in order to move the story along. Good thing I only have 4 recurring characters and 1 enter and exit character.

GWYNLEE2 - I admire essayists. I taught Competitive Essay writing for several years, not the same thing as real essay writing, so keep writing'em!

Just finished doing the edits on my fantasy story (shameless plug coming) 'Willow Wyst' on Writing.com. It WAS like killing one of my babies. But, I made the edits, then re-read it out loud, as also suggested. Yep, it did flow better, and Sophie's voice was stronger.

Made a couple of decisions(?).....named my protag & antag, began sketching out the 3 worlds my Pulp story takes place on. Will be using scenes to begin with. Scene 1 in the style of the 1930's, Scene 2 in the style of the 1940's, Scene 3 in the style of the 1950's.

I am on a depressing story kick for some reason.

Wrote a dead kid story last night. 3200 words in 3 hours. It's good being able to type at the speed most people can talk.

The story before that was a guy who traded his beloved wife's life to the devil for career success, and before that was aliens show up, scan us, and move off after deciding we're not worth contacting.

Like I said, depressing stories lately.

Doing some brainstorming/practice on writing in the style of 1930's pulp Sci-Fi. A fun language all its own, and pretty much disappearing from our bookshelves.

The one thing that makes you a writer is: Writing.

As Stephen King once said, "A writer writes."

The first step is putting words on paper. Until you start doing that, all the rest is just procrastination and busy work.

So, congratulations, you say you've written essays, then you're a writer.

Good work!

I'll be making the final edits to my 'ghost story', then submit it to Writing.com for more in-depth reviews.

I've decided to go PULP with my next story. I've been draining the local library and inter-library loan for Sci-Fi short stories from the 1930's thru the 1950's; Doc Savage, Tom Swift, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, etc. I guess the only rules back then were to keep the punctuation simple, non-stop action, and your story filled with crazy outrageous sci-fi devices and monsters.
This could be a fun style to write.

I've had a lot going on. From being sick to the company I work being bought out. I did get chapter 16 done on my WIP and got it sent to my beta reader. She had a few things she thought were out of place. I totally agree with her on one, the other I'm still mulling. I'll make the one change she wanted but will think about the other. I'm thinking I need more then just one person to give me input on this.

The bad: I have not worked on a "project" for months. I can't even remember the last time I sat down to write on either of my novels in progress.

The good: I wrote a short story last night at writing group. 2300 words. I had my husband give me a prompt and it turned out to work really well as a short story, I think.

The bad: Every story I sent out this round was rejected. (6)

The good: Lightspeed sent a very nice personal rejection for my story. They liked the voice, but they didn't understand the character's motivation at the very end, which I totally get, because I was already thinking about alterations to the space battle she's in that would make her choice more clear to the reader.

Writemann, if you're writing fiction, you can play pretty fast and loose with a lot of grammar rules. End a sentence on a preposition if it fits the flow. Use sentence fragments to ramp up the pacing of an action scene. Use slang.

If you're writing for something more formal, like an academic journal, you'll want to adhere strictly to the accepted grammar for that publication.

When I'm editing my husband's movie reviews, I allow a lot more leeway than when I'm editing my son's college papers.

True. I'll stick with my current proofreader. There is a free clone of Scrivener called HiveWord. I visited the Scrivener site and the Hiveword site. They appear to work the same and have MANY of the same features, with different names. Hiveword has similar high ratings as Scrivener. Only real difference is HW is totally free.
Check it out.

Writemann: Oh, dear. :) I don't know if I've heard of precis grammar. But I guess that's something to ask next time you get a proofreader.

I will start using scrivener when I start my next MS. I don't want to have to figure it out when I'm 56K into a story already.

My English Teacher ( a published author) recommended Scrivener. They have a 30 day/use (not 30 consecutive days) FREE trial. Each day you sign on it counts as one usage.
I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

I sent it to a friend of my wife's who teaches Advanced Composition at MSU. She responded saying that there were no grammatical errors, unless I was using 'precis' grammar, then there were many. But since no fiction writer would be caught dead ever using 'precis', then there were no errors. She also reminded me that since she knew I was NOT anal retentive, I should consider 'Willow Wyst' not only my first, but my last foray into fantasy story writing.

After reading some of the reviews on Writing.com of 'Willow Wyst', I had to agree.

Well, several things could be happening here -

1. your proofreader is correct and the other person is wrong

Hmmm, I sent my latest FF to my proofreader to make and suggest corrections in grammar. Grammar rules are a foreign language I never learned. So, that was done. I made all the suggested changes, submitted my work. The first review I received was all about the 'glaring' grammatical errors I had made. The reviewer pointed out 8 'errors'. I contacted my reader about this. She told me not to be concerned, my story was grammatically correct.
Has anyone else ever had this happen?

I have gotten out of the habit of writing so right now just focused on 'butt in the seat.: using two books with great prompts Page after Page by Heather Sellers and The Writers Idea Book by Jack Heffron. Write now I am writing on the prompt from the beginning of the book- Lawns. It simply beings with the words, :I steal" I am not using I steal but I am using I...."

I use Scrivener. After you install it on your PC you can copy it to a flash drive and run if from that. I do that so I can always have my WIP with me. As long as the PC that I stick the flash drive in has Scrivener installed on it, it'll from the flash drive.

I haven't been able to write ANYTHING since that one flash story a few weeks ago.

I have hardly been able to sit down at the keyboard.

Normally, I work from 5:30-2:30, then I have 3:00-4:30 set aside for writing time.

For the last few weeks, I have been working through my writing time (not to mention working through lunch). Then, having just put in an 11-hour day, I collapse on the sofa and tell my kids it's "fend for yourself night." My husband is willing, but not a great cook, and he's been working late prepping for his trip, so generally the kids are on their own. There's been a lot of Ramen, mac&cheese and frozen fish sticks in my house lately.

Last week, my husband left for a month in The Philippines, so that's big.

When I do I sit down in front of my keyboard, nothing happens. I type. I get words on the page, but they're not part of a story. The last time I found the time to write, I got a complete list of all the things I haven't finished yet: stories that I know need editing, stories I wanted to write but haven't started yet, the three books I've started and not finished.

In short, no, I didn't work on my writing project today, or for the last week.

UGH!

I went to a Scrivener workshop this weekend to see if it was something I wanted to use. I might as well try it. It's not that expensive.

A few months ago I learned about Blake Snyder's beat sheet/Save the Cat. I think it would work very well with Scrivener's cork board feature.

Now to actually put them to use...

Finally finished Chapter 14. For some reason is really hard to get it written. I wasn't really happy with it until it was all done and I read it as a completed chapter. I'm happy with it now. My beta reader thought it was great. I went on to Chapter 15 that one seems to be writing itself. It's the darkest chapter yet. It's all about the bad guys. I'm a little over 3000K words right now on it.

I can't imagine trying to write while in the midst of redecorating your house. Yikes!

I am trying to get my house in order, all the painting, cleaning, organizing, and decluttering done so that I have minimal to clean, no projects left (short list). So that each day I can just live life being active and writing.... oh and working til I can live by my imagination.

I wrote a story last night!

It's the first thing I've managed to finish in WEEKS.

I'm so happy.

I'm a member of RWA but not of Women Fiction Writer's Association.

You can have a romance without sex scenes (see Kristan Higgins or inspirational novels, and others). They're usually referred to as sweet romances. What matters is the love story and the happy ending.

Finding a great critique group is gold! And your system sounds really good, too.

not writing, but reading Writer's Digest for some tips and clarification the past week and a half (got a lot of old issues I saved but never read, and renewed my subscription). I'm also organizing old writing journals of mine and my thoughts for a memoir-ish thing I'm planning to write (or at least get enough info over the year to turn it into my NaNoWriMo project)

Hoping to finish reading my writer's digest copies, and am carrying a microrecorder with me to work to pick up any bits of inspiration I get while I'm swabbing decks or taking out the trash. started doing that today and it might be what I need to kick me into better ideas (I forget to write things down when convenient)

Are any of you RWA people also members of Women's Fiction Writer's Association? My manuscript is a love story with virtually no sex scenes, so I have found a home there. My critique group is tremendous. We're all working on full MS drafts, so we're spending a month on each person, really diving into the characters etc. And since we're all querying or about to, it's great support.

Finally got around to editing some of my shorts and sending them out.

Sent three on Sunday, two on Monday.

Already got a "Thanks but no thanks" from Clarkesworld for one of the Sunday ones, so I need to pick where to send it next.

I'm going to get my SFWA qualifying stories this year if I have to submit everything I can write to every publication on their list!

Thanks Abby. I'm shooting for just around the 90K point. Taylor and Devon's story is at 47,016, Last Christmas (my short story) came in at 5,935. Santa Baby (Novella WIP) is at 9,640. So I have a ways to go on my main WIP (Taylor/Devon). emoticon

That's pretty much what it is. :) Write until the story is told.

Keep in mind, my contract with my publisher said 90K words. Different publishers have different lengths, but I just wanted to give you that number.

Well I'm back to my main WIP. I had a bit of trouble getting chapter 14 started. But now I'm 1/3 of the way through it. Hubby asked me how many chapters it'll have and I told I have no idea. I guess I'll know when I get to the end. emoticon
