I can't imagine trying to write while in the midst of redecorating your house. Yikes!

I am trying to get my house in order, all the painting, cleaning, organizing, and decluttering done so that I have minimal to clean, no projects left (short list). So that each day I can just live life being active and writing.... oh and working til I can live by my imagination.

I wrote a story last night!

It's the first thing I've managed to finish in WEEKS.

I'm so happy.

I'm a member of RWA but not of Women Fiction Writer's Association.

You can have a romance without sex scenes (see Kristan Higgins or inspirational novels, and others). They're usually referred to as sweet romances. What matters is the love story and the happy ending.

Finding a great critique group is gold! And your system sounds really good, too.

not writing, but reading Writer's Digest for some tips and clarification the past week and a half (got a lot of old issues I saved but never read, and renewed my subscription). I'm also organizing old writing journals of mine and my thoughts for a memoir-ish thing I'm planning to write (or at least get enough info over the year to turn it into my NaNoWriMo project)

Hoping to finish reading my writer's digest copies, and am carrying a microrecorder with me to work to pick up any bits of inspiration I get while I'm swabbing decks or taking out the trash. started doing that today and it might be what I need to kick me into better ideas (I forget to write things down when convenient)

Are any of you RWA people also members of Women's Fiction Writer's Association? My manuscript is a love story with virtually no sex scenes, so I have found a home there. My critique group is tremendous. We're all working on full MS drafts, so we're spending a month on each person, really diving into the characters etc. And since we're all querying or about to, it's great support.

Finally got around to editing some of my shorts and sending them out.

Sent three on Sunday, two on Monday.

Already got a "Thanks but no thanks" from Clarkesworld for one of the Sunday ones, so I need to pick where to send it next.

I'm going to get my SFWA qualifying stories this year if I have to submit everything I can write to every publication on their list!

Thanks Abby. I'm shooting for just around the 90K point. Taylor and Devon's story is at 47,016, Last Christmas (my short story) came in at 5,935. Santa Baby (Novella WIP) is at 9,640. So I have a ways to go on my main WIP (Taylor/Devon). emoticon

That's pretty much what it is. :) Write until the story is told.

Keep in mind, my contract with my publisher said 90K words. Different publishers have different lengths, but I just wanted to give you that number.

Well I'm back to my main WIP. I had a bit of trouble getting chapter 14 started. But now I'm 1/3 of the way through it. Hubby asked me how many chapters it'll have and I told I have no idea. I guess I'll know when I get to the end. emoticon

Very cool! And no, it's not silly.

This person doesn't know you, didn't take your feelings into account, and didn't have to say anything nice. When you get praise for your writing by a total stranger, you're darn tootin' it's a form of validation!

My BFF (the one that got me started on this writing adventure) does these writing prompts from The Writers Path blog. She's been encouraging me to try it. So yesterday I did. These were the prompts:

Begin a scene with this line: Clocks aren’t supposed to stand still like that.

Include all of these elements into a scene: a wine glass, a translation book, awe, and a puzzle piece.

Write a scene with a court jester who doesn’t think he’s funny.

So I worked on something yesterday and then posted it on my writing blog ( https://freeingmymuse.wordpress.com/ ). I also posted the story here on my Spark blog. Last night I get a comment notice from my BFF from Freeing My Muse. She all excited. It seems when you post your story on your blog and link back to The Writer's Path blog, the blog owner, Ryan Lanz, picks one to highlight.

Well yesterday that one was mine! I was so shocked! Maybe I can do this writing thing and have people enjoy what I write. Here's the link to what he said (he was impressed I did ALL the prompts. Which is kind of funny...I thought I HAD to do all of them!). I guess in a small way, it makes me feel vindicated. Or is that just silly of me? emoticon

I haven't joined the local chapter. They meet on weekends and I can't do that. Hubby, cats, etc keep me pretty busy on weekends.

I've been working on my Santa Baby short/novella story and stated some notes I had about an idea. That's what I posted to my blog yesterday.

Yay RWA! There's a critique partner matching program that you can register for on the myRWA site. I'm not a part of it because I have my fill already, but you should totally do it!

Did you join a local chapter, too?

I'm trying to get back on track with Spark. Post and stuff. I have been working off and on on what used to be a short story but now seems it's moved into the novella realm. I've been using my tablet for that mostly. I'm not really happy with the little desk setup I did.

But it's working for me. I bought a Western Digital Passport mini drive to use instead of the various flash drives I had, but it turns out it's NOT compatible with my Samsung Tablet. So back to a flash drive to keep my WIP on.

Also...I'm now a member of RWA. I'll have to explore their site some. I need someone to help me with critiquing my work. My BFF does a great job of being a beta reader, but she's new at this too.

Awesome MYREALANA. I finally have gotten some real direction on my story. I am having a little trouble deciding on the motive for one of my characters so I have to get to know him a little better, but other than that, things seem to be shaping up.

The only time that I use pen and paper now is on poetry. It doesn't take to long to transfer that to the computer.

Hey! I have lost 5 inches on my hips since I started SPARKPEOPLE. I am not to proud to brag. I just hope to keep it off.

I got my plot summary knocked out last night, and I've got the chapter outline done through Chapter 9.

I worked out a few kinks that were bothering me, dropped a subplot that was kind of a stretch and made the villain's motivation a little more straight-forward. Now, the plotting is going much more smoothly.

I should be able to finish up the chapter outline tonight, and start writing chapter 1 tomorrow.

I've been slacking on the writing front so far in 2015.

I've been put in charge of a major project at work, and I pretty much worked 12 hours a day, every day from Dec 15 to Jan 9, except Christmas. Weekends, New Years, no different.

I finally got some breathing room this weekend and I found myself just sitting around, staring at things. I couldn't even begin to write.

Hopefully, I'll be able to give my writing a little more of my attention in the coming weeks.

Better you catch it than someone else! :)

I had finished a rough draft of my MS, but thought of a good scene to add, so I started that yesterday. Of course, this means I have to rewrite everything that happens afterward, but I'll deal.

So I worked a bit on my not so short story yesterday and now that I've re-read what I wrote I'm not happy with it. So I'm going to rework that last bit. It's just one paragraph that seems out of place in the storyline. emoticon

I have a hard time working on anything but a desktop. Sometimes I have to use a laptop if I am waiting for my hubby while he is in chemotherapy, but it is difficult. I would rather use a pen and paper notebook, but I hate to type it into the computer again. It seems a waste of time. I seem to be more creative on pen and paper though so it does have merits.

Aangel3, have fun with your short story. It sounds like you've been working hard.

I have a Samsung Tab S. It's got a 10.5 inch screen so it's not too bad. The last two days I'm on my laptop on the kitchen table. As of right now, I'm 4,475 words int what I hope is a short story. Since I still have the big reveal to do, it might be a bit longer then the suggested 7500 words or so for a short story. But hubby will be off work tomorrow though Sunday, so I see less time to work on it in my near future. Hubbys can be kind of needy! emoticon

So I took two weeks for Christmas/New Years thinking I'd have time alone at home. I love my hubby but sometimes a girl just needs ME time. He took two extra days off too. So I'm left only two days at home by myself to write. But I'm going to make the most of it!

I also found over the weekend that I can write like a little demon while setting at Starbucks using my tablet. We went to Starbucks Fri, Sat, and Sun mornings last week, had coffee and a croissant and we took our tablets. I the words just seemed to flow out of me.

Today I'm at the dining room table, ht tea on hand, 70s music playing on the surround system and typing away!

OK..back to it. I'm about half way though my short story.

Aangel, that's interesting - I don't send it to my beta reader until I have it polished, and you send it after a quick check for spelling. I love how different people work in different ways. :)

Abby I've been following these steps.

Write a first draft chapter of my story.
Check it for glaring misspellings.
Send it to my beta reader.
Start next chapter.
When she gets back to me, look over her suggestion/corrections.
Make those changes that she suggested and I feel are valid.
Print that chapter out and add it to my binder.
I'll do edits on the paper pages when I'm done with the whole first draft.

Right now I'm in the middle of a second short story I'm calling Santa Baby.

MyLiberty, good luck. Keep us updated.

Aangel, are you only going to do the editing your beta readers suggest? Or are you going to go through it on your own again?

Here's my usual process:
1. Write a really crappy first draft.
2. Edit crappy first draft into a passable first draft, fill in missing information, add stuff when I made the notes to add stuff, yada yada yada.
3. Fill in missing emotions, sensory details, and descriptions
4. Print it out and read it through, making edits on the paper if necessary. When finished, incorporate edits.
5. Send to beta readers and incorporate changes if necessary.
6. Send to agent.

It takes a while for me to get a book I'd consider sending to my agent.

Yes, it is always a good idea to pay attention to your reader/ editor. I just am an old English teacher and find it really hard not to edit anything I do before I send it to the editor. My editor is usually really good about giving me ideas to work with on my stories. She seems to look at things from a different point of view, but that is a good thing.

I only did the editing on my short story after I was done with it. I printed it out and read though it while waiting for my beta reader to get back to me. After going over my edits and her edits, I did final run though for spelling and then called it good. It was learning process.

For my WIP novel, I;m printing out each chapter as I write them and put them in a binder. The only editing I do is I want to pick up any changes my Beta sends me. I make note of them on the printed page.

Hmm... Sounds like good advice to me. WRITEMANN1 and ABBYSHARPE. I seem to be in a circular cycle of editing that never ends. I will try waiting till the end to edit. It certainly can't hurt.

Well, everyone has their own way of writing, but I'm with you. Write first. Edit later. I also don't outline. :)

Editing as you write is fine if you're writing for yourself.
I would edit, re-edit over half of what I had written, every day. I thought this was OK. A several books published relative asked me if I ever, really wanted to be published, I would stop, and learn to edit AFTER I was completely through with my rough/first draft. I figured it out, and now that's when I start editing.

Is there ever a time when one can say that the editing phase is finished? I edit every time I read my writing.

Having fun with the short story. I even got so involved that I didn't snack as much and lost 2 lbs.

Thanks everyone. I learned a lot writing Last Christmas. Mostly about trying to edit something. I'm not sure I did it right, but at least I have a better idea about editing now. I've also started another short story.

I haven't forgot mt novel, just taking a break.

I started a new short story. I am excited about it. I have never done a historical short story, but I am giving it a try.

Congratulations! I find it very hard to write short. I think that's a talent all on its own.

WOOT WOOT! My first short story is done and I posted on my brand spanking new WordPress blog. If anyone would like to read it, it's here:

Titled Last Christmas.

Hmmm...link won't work. Maybe cut and paste?

Enjoy!

I heard back from my beta reader. She had a few things that I fixed, then I used a red pen to go though the whole thing again on paper and fixed some odd sounding stuff. I still have to make the changes in my writing program, then I'll send it back to her for a last look. I'd like to post it this week.

Today I started editing a short story that I might show some coworkers cause one keeps mentioning how I haven't shown them anything I've written so far. It's a bit tame compared to some of my other things, doesn't show much on the romance side, so we'll see.

I finished Chapter 13 last week. And instead of starting chapter 14, I decide to try writing a short Christmas story. I have that done now (with some light editing). It's 5,904 words long and bit on the Christmas fringe side. emoticon I sent it to my beta reader and haven't heard back from her yet. I'm going to try and post it on my blog after she gets back to me. I really need some feed back on it.

And just in case the Spark censors don't let me post it here, I'll be post it on my Pro Board.

I don't write in chapters. I add asterisks for a scene break, and then when I'm done, I'll count off 5K word blocks and see where to best end a chapter.

I do this mostly so I don't have to go back and find what chapter I'm on. *laugh*

I seem to have a mini streak going on right now in that I'm getting about an hour a day in on my WIP. Chapter 13 is 2/3 of the way done!

Oh, that's nice! Heh - my hubby works at a school, so he gets off all school vacations. It's nice because we have kids, so we don't have to find day care for them, but it also means if I take time off, I'm in a house full of people!

emoticon Yeah...mine depends a lot on what hubby has planned. I took vacation around Christmas. Days that he won't have off. I'm hoping to spend a lot of that time writing.

WooHoo! Chapter 12 is done and off to my beta reader. It came in at 3,670 words. Now on to Chapter 13. I'm off work the rest of this week (last day is today). My mom will be here for Thanksgiving but I hope to find time to work on the new chapter.

My writing time is pretty much catch it as I can right now. Still fighting the insurance company, getting ready to maybe race this weekend (Wed-Sun).

I have several things going on right now in the writing dept. Working on the last bit of chapter 12 of my main WIP. I felt I needed to get at least one love scene down (that looks like about 1K words in itself). Plus started a shorter WIP based on a character in the main WIP. And got a few paragraphs down about the bad boy (not the BIG baddie, just a lesser one, maybe turns good) in the main WIP.

I've been a bit stressed lately! emoticon
