I confess I've been at a stand still as far as penning -- or typing -- anything for a few months. I am a part of an erotic anthology, but I haven't been motivated past that! I am going to get back into my writing this weekend. The hardest thing I've found it just getting started. Does anyone have that problem?? emoticon

"Forgive me Fodder for I done cinn'd. For years I've led the charge against anything that even appears to restrict one's creativity.
I taught my composition students to shun all formal outlining schemes. Instead, use only key word or key phrase sketch outlines.
Instead of doing only one day of free writing, everyday was a free write day.
I taught them only bare bones grammar, unless they were going to be literary'ists, since most writers eventually create their own rules for sentence structure.
I taught them that if they were writing about a time or place where specific rules applied, and researching those rules was taking too much writing time, then create your own time or place and only Your rules would apply.
Alas, now I find it was for nought: now as I start taking my writing seriously, much of what I railed against, I find that I need to be using."

Myrea, that's great! I think readers need a lot less backstory than we think they do.

I finally worked out a problem I've been having with my WIP. I skipped the "origin story" for my heroine. She's sheriff in a mining town in 1882, which is weird enough, but the population of the town includes her ex-Pinkerton deputy, a vampire, a Lakota shaman skinwalker, and of course, the town witch.

There are a lot of question that naturally come up as to why a young woman is sheriff, how she knows what she does why the vampire is allowed in town. I was starting to think I was going to have to scrap the current story and go back and try to choke out the origin story after all.

But, last night, I worked it out. I found a way to get enough backstory into the dialogue that I think the reader can fill in the missing bits on their own, without doing the "As you know, captain," speech.

Finally finished the chapter in the one novel, LtW is what I'll call it to make it easier. Wrote a scene today, over 1,000 words. Yay.

I spent the entire day waiting for my car to be fixed, so I did a lot of brainstorming/free writing.
I used several of the other customers for character sketches. Wonder if any of them used me??

I did the last couple of days even. Have worked on the novel edits so that I'm now on chapter 12 (having started back at chapter 25). Also started writing in a young adult novel. Have a scene done so far.

I had to kill off a minor character during editing. She was one of two 'red herrings'. I decided I just needed one. This is the first time I've needed to do a 'kill'. I've never had so much fun!
It started off simply enough, but, then I really got into it. I just let my imagination go free with different ways to kill. After about 30 death scenes, I settled on two that were both excessively bizarre, and funny. I e-mailed them to my friends who proof and critique my stories, asking them to choose.
So my readers will bid adieu to this character who wore the cruel panty-hose. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Slow but okay. At a part that is a bit uncertain but I'll get through it. Today I edited half a chapter from the other novel.

Started working on one of the novels I plan to write over this summer. It's a YA novel that I started a few years ago but only got 15,000 words into it back then. Fixed a chapter today where I just missed something.

Next I can start a new chapter. Yay!

I managed to edit half a chapter today. Only 19.5 more to go for editing this time around.

As for 3rd to 1st person. hmmm

Honestly, I do the whole draft in one method before doing any major changes, but that's me. The one I'm editing now, the first draft was written in 1st person present tense. I suck at first person and the word count was only 23,000. Draft 2, I changed the novel to 3rd person present tense, rewrote the whole thing but the things that happened stayed relatively the same though I knew more what I wanted by then. Draft 3, I fixed some of the weak words and such while also changing it to past tense. And now I'm doing minor edits going through the novel backwards one sentence at a time. Still find an occasional present tense as I slip back and forth at times.

It has taken me 7 years with this one, but that's partly because I get distracted writing other things. So, I don't have much advice other than just to write the draft and fix it later. ;-)

Congrats to your baby!

As for getting motivated, I got nothing other than working through it when you don't want to. Write every day. I changed a story from 1st to 3rd it was HARD, but ultimately a more satisfying read.

I decided to change my mystery from 3rd person to 1st person and just not motivated to do the typing plus add all the changes that I scribbled on scraps of paper as they came to me. Any tips out there? I like the dreaming up part. It's the follow through that's waning. Don't get me wrong. I love the ideas coming out of my head, I guess depression is just keeping me from enjoying it right now. (Baby Graduated and is moving across country in a couple of days)

I've already finished three chapters that aren't edited, but I just haven't had the motivation to write this week. I'm going to push myself today and write: It's not like I don't have enough time. I don't work now, and I can write all day if I choose to.

Good idea, acually.

I've been playing with the interaction among some of the characters and I'm realizing there's not even a hint of romantic relationships going on at all. The MC is not going to be getting it on with anyone. She's just not interested. But there are a couple of secondary characters who lack depth, and giving them romantic entaglements would make sense. Plus, other than the MC, everyone of consequence in the book is male. I could use some development of other women in the town to add some balance to the cast.

Myrea, if you can't do anything different with your plot in Act 2, mess with your characters. A major conflict, a romance, something that you can go back and lightly introduce in Act 1, takes center stage in Act 2 when the rest of your plot is brewing, then gets solved in Act 3 along with your final battle. Maybe look for two of your characters that have a bigger story to tell.

Of every 100 men, 10 shouldn't even be there, 80 are nothing but targets, 9 are real fighters, we are lucky to have them, they the battle make. Ah, but the one. one of them is a warrior, and he will bring the others back. --Heraclitus,500 BC

I'm having an act 2 problem with my current novel - the weird western.

Act 1 is fabulous. Act 3 (outlined) has plenty of suspense and action and hopefully a great and satifying resolution.

However, I'm not feeling it for the bridge between these two that I have outlined.

Basically, Act 1 seems like it's an adventure unto itself. The MC solves a murder, the killer reveals himself and threatens to kill everyone, the MC (a sharpshooter) shoots him, all done -- except he pops back up and reveals that he's posessed by the demon Moloch and now will destroy the whole town in revenge.

Act 2 is supposed to encompass the town finding a way to fight Moloch and Act 3 is the actual final battle split between the siege of the town and the MC facing Moloch down on his home turf.

I'm not feeling the second act. I feel like I'm writing filler. It was supposed to give me time to add in some character development and more setting details about the magic and mythology of this world, but I just can't get into it. I want to fast forward to the big battle, which makes me think maybe the reader will want to also. I need this time to get things in order, but I don't know how to make it compelling.

ARGH!

Been working on short fiction, or well scenes that play as short fiction but are connected to bigger stories. Shiny New Idea wouldn't be as much of an issue if the stories stayed short. They would then be finished and more ideas would be good. But no, they all wanna be novels... *sighs*

I've worked on a couple things so far today but still have writing to do. Managed a couple reviews of other people's writing on the peer site. Also sent out some of the stories that have had rejections in the past month. So, now have three more stories out waiting for response but also trying to get a couple more ready, some that haven't been sent yet. Fun times.

Yes, I'm at a point with one that I need to let it sit before I go back an edit, so I started another one that I had some notes on, but no structure.

Well, technically it's supposed to have a satisfying ending, they just get less words to do it in. lol

I worked on writing today though not sure what to call a project. I have so much going at once with trying to write for things on Writing.Com and such. Not sure what I'll submit next story wise either but have some things in the works.

I understand the frustration! There are many things that I have written as stand alone stories that people asked to have stretched into something else. I feel like it is really difficult to write short stories and fully contain everything. Good luck and keep on writing!

Short fiction is fun but a challenge for me as everything seems to want to be longer.

I just wrote a random thing couple of weeks ago based off the prompt "Mercury (name)" and got a review from someone on the writing web site that basically said they hope it's a prologue cause they want the rest of the story. Actually, same with the story I have out to an anthology, when I first wrote it for the contest based on the prompt of evil, the short story is it, nothing else beyond planned. 2 people read it and go, so what happens next. No next.

But I keep trying. Today I worked on a story about a boy who has to wear these weird gloves and the main character is trying to find out why.

I like the idea of dabbling in short fiction. I have some ideas I want to develop.

Yay multi-tasking! emoticon

I sometimes give in to the shiny new idea urge. It's fun but also have to be able to finish something. For me, the challenge has been trying to figure out which will be the one that gets picked up first for publishing. It's so hard to tell as I like all of my ideas. Might be slightly biased, lol. But I'm also one who works on many different stories at once. And I vary in genre a bit with YA, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, mainstream, and even some bits of erotica. Fun times for me but still have to see how it all plays out in the end.

Today, I'm writing on a couple of things but also reviewing a few other people's stories.

I think sometimes you have to dabble until you find the thing that really grips you. That's why I'm focusing more on short fiction right now. I figure one of these stories or worlds will grow into a novel-length idea at some point.

Yep, if I get an idea I just jot it down for later. This book is my only writing focus right now! :)

Great going, Katie!

I'm sure you'll find lots of opinions on writing more than one story at a time. I don't, because I get confused as to who's doing what in which story. But however you go about writing, make SURE you get to the end and don't succumb to Shiny New Idea Syndrome.

Thanks for all the support by the way ladies! It's scary opening up about this, but super freeing and motivating at the same time - I feel like I'm at an exciting stage of things right now!

Right now what I'm working on is a YA type. The lead is a teen girl who is descended from one of the Salem Witches (which I actually am - Rebecca Nurse) and she discovers why they were really hanged and other things throughout history tie in also - for a VERY brief description LOL. I have another idea that is completely different too though about a woman in the empty nest stage of her life and her self discoveries, so I'm not limiting myself yet, I would like to play around over the years with at least short stories in different genres and see what I'm most interested in and passionate about. But this story is my main focus right now, it's what came to me and what I'm going with :) I read anything from Anna Karenina and Pride and Prejudice to YA to Stephen King, etc - I like to have a well rounded reading list every year, so I'm open to writing different things until I KNOW what type clicks for me. I'm open to playing with anything that inspires me. Hope that makes sense :)

Katie, that's fantastic! It's so hard to admit to folks you write because you're opening yourself up to criticism. And the fact that you sat down and did 1K words? Amazing.

What genre are you writing? I'm a romance girl.

Good for you for stepping out of your comfort zone and freeing your creativity! It's really exciting when you get a thought and then everything just starts flowing - and that's how you know you're on the right track! Keep up the momentum!
