Just do baby steps and mini-goals.Get through it one day at a time, one hour at a time if you need to. One mistake is not going to kill you. Like I heard someone on this site say "if one of your tires popped, would you go around and pop the other 3?" I find that saying to be helpful to me.

You all are right, I am a perfectionist bipolar and that doesn't help at all. In fact, it sets me up for trouble. I often say to myself, "I know it won't be the way it really should be, xo why bother doing it at all? I am very afraid of being judged. That's a big bad deep down, nitty-gritty feeling for me. I comes down to one of two things: Do it perfectly, of don't do it.

Same goes with diets; Either I follow them to the letter, or I miss something small and end up in a splurge. That's me.

there's no rules that says you have to resume a ton of regular life activities all at once. no one is measuring. and if they are they aren't worth your energy. take your time. relax. do what you can until you feel like doing more.

Ayla, just try doing your normal things- self care, getting out of the house, stuff like that. It's hard to do, but I know you can. Even if you just walk around the block, or whatever feels safe for you (you have agoraphobia?), but do things that make you happy.

Hello all,
Right now I feel guilty for having a bad day. Slept too long, isolating myself, tired, Just want to be by myself and not for anything. I know these are not good signs, but I am going to see if I feel better in the morning. Things have been generally looking up, I really don't need a setback right now. One day at a time, I will let it be.

cool. i've used that site before. i needed more customization than i wanted to put in at the time. the key is use what works for you. like when coaches get asked what's the best exercise. the answer is the one that you do! do what works for you.

Just find out what works for you... I don't write things down, I just keep a mental log. Sometimes I get messed up, but I'm too lazy to write a schedule, especially since I don't have anything to do all day.

Hello all,

I have been thinking and working out a plan for my system. I like the paper sitting in-front-of-me idea, so I am going to go with a plan I used before--the WRAP plan by Mary Ellen Copeland. There were many things about it that worked for me.

I also have an online program called Optimism, where I log my daily successes, failures, and triggers. The site is called findingoptimism.com and I find it works much better than a conventional mood log. It has computer, tablet and phone programs, and I just love the thing. Since I just use the computer, it works out well for me.

I haven't really gotten into getting organized yet, since at this point I am only 12 days or so out of being at suicidal feelings, and 11 days into my new medication dose. I seem to be getting better every single day, which feel very fine. I am definitely on the lookout for hypomania, but so far, things are fine and "normal."

I really appreciate all of you and this site. So glad I found you. Thanks for all your help and support.

Ayla

yea they're apps. some have PC versions as well. good old pen and paper is what most are based off of

unless taking care of others is your paid job ... then you HAVE to take care of yourself FIRST. which means eating and sleeping regularly and consistently

as for a master schedule .. you have to do that on your own. figure out what you have to or want to get done in a day ... block off time for meds and meals and sleep. mark down exercise times. and whatever else necessary.

if you're not into apps (phone or computer) ... try Google Calendar or Yahoo calendar .. or Outlook Calendar .. or just get a monthly daily or weekly planner for cheap at the store (some places give free ones as advertisement near the end of the year) ... and mark down things

in college i used weekly planner with color coordinated class assignments and tasks written in there. i switched to computer versions once they became more popular. i wish i'd kept my old planners for some things but alas.

also check out the WHICH STEP ARE YOU ON picture .. nothing is i can't if choose it to not be

Larissa, I can appreciate your "have to" attitude. Maybe it's a morality thing. I have some "have to's and some definite won'ts and "never will"s. I have often done the "have to" thing myself.

I guess it's the way I keep myself going when the chips are down. My have-tos today revolve around doing things that relate to taking care of other people and going to the doctor, and taking my medication. I let a lot of other things, like eating and sleeping slide. Maybe I should make eating and sleeping "have-tos" as well. I would probably do better if I made a lot of my self care regimen a have-to.

Fact of the matter is I spend too much time on my sorry butt watching the world go by around me. Now that my meds are kicking in I am finding myself wanting (and finding myself having some power) to change it. Now I can get down to the nitty gritty and change some my I can'ts into I need to's or perhaps even I have to's.

When push comes to shove, if I want to be a truly functional bipolar, there are going to be have to's. Functionality requires mandatory maintenance. Now I have the energy (just about) to start taking better care of myself. And I know now that I AM WORTH IT

Good luck, Ayla! I'm okay with getting things done, especially if I think I *have* to do it. I *have* to exercise to lose weight, so I go out and exercise. When I don't want to do it, I think of my Dad and how he pushed himself through so much pain. I'm a bit lost in life, now. When I was a kid, I was told over and over that I *had* to get good grades and graduate from a good college. It was not an option, there was no room for error. And I did it! I went to the University of Southern California (USC) and even though I was in and out of the mental hospital while going there, I would just bring my books and study when we were not in group. I never once thought about dropping out. That would be the worst sin I could think of, so it never crossed my mind. Now I don't know what to do... I'm on disability and am going to be for a while. I'm trying to think about things I can do when I go back into the real world.

I know you probably can't relate to my story, but it's just how I got things done. Now I have to make my own "I have to's" and get them ingrained in my brain just like college was.

Thanks for the info Kimberly. Those programs all sound like apps, would they work on my pc? I don't have a smart phone. I actually think I might do better with an old-fashioned paper and pen application like my WRAP. I really do appreciate all the thought you put into this though. I might try an app of it would work on the computer. I don't need to make lists, what I need is a master schedule.

I am generally not a multi-tasker. I shall try the 5-minute system and see how it works out. I will let you know.

Thanks again,
vary sincerely,
Ayla

you are correct ... DBT is about your thinking and changing patterns and thoughts .. it isn't about setting a routine or sticking to a schedule or meeting goals. for that you need to look into organizational programs. anything from a simple task list (remember the milk, google tasks, notepad, toodledo, Wunderlist, Producteev, iProcrastinate, Cheqlist, ) to GTD (getting things done) or Franklin Covey system or MyIntervals.

my best advice is do one thing at a time. don't try to multi-task b/c every task will suffer without your full attention.

work on prioritizing the tasks and coordinate with how much available time you can put into a task.

break things down into smaller tasks. check things off a list when done so you can see how much is left to do on that larger project.

i don't know you or your personality or work style so i can't tailor the advice much more than that. you can always try something out and if it doesn't work .. scrap it and try something new.. if it's all overwhelming .. try the 5 minute system.. try something for 5 minutes and re-evaluate how it's going ... if good and easy then continue .. else set it aside and do something else (now keep in mind that's more for ppl like me who have trouble getting started at all .. not for someone who wants to start everything all the time all at once)

All I know is I have a really hard time keeping on track, a nothing in DBT that I can think of is going to help me with that--unless you know something I don't. I have to come up with a very strict schedule to adhere to (I know it sounds corny and old fashioned, but I have to treat myself as if I still lived in the nursing home) or else I can't get anything done and I feel terrible. Mary Ellen Copeland came up with an organization plan. Does anyone else know how to make a schedule for yourself?

Kim: For me, on time is late too. But my mom is all about being laid back. She says she'll be done in 10, so grab a cup of coffee because it's going to be a while. She's gotten better over the years, but I can't tell you how many times we had to chase the school bus because we missed it by being too late.

Mollie: great job on starting the DBTsupport team. I haven't looked at it yet but I would think discussions about a topic or a "worksheet" being useful. we usually cover 4-5 worksheets over the a couple of weeks that pertain to one another (in my in person group). here lately we've been doing automatic thoughts... recognizing them and thinking of alternate reactions to practice for next time.

we cover a lot of things that maybe aren't all DBT specific. definition of DBT, shades of gray, balance, automatic negative thoughts, reactions, moods, finding positives, anger management, sorrow and grief, self esteem, handling difficult situations, interpersonal relationships, self talk, etc...

Larissa: i have that thing too where "on time" is "late" in my mind. but i'm almost always 10-15+ minutes early to appointments or meetings and expect everyone else to be there within 5 minutes of the start time. and to me if start at :00 designated time feels late and anything beyond that feels disastrous. beyond 15 min and i feel distraught (understatement).. but i've also been stood up so many times part of the fear is real. but that's just my interpretations of things. not everyone.. most everyone.. doesn't hold themselves to the same early/on time/late guidelines. for me i have to learn to breathe and think about they might have had traffic or someone cut them off or car troubles or any number of other things might have gone awry... that it isn't personal.

as for the new therapies and whatnot .. i don't really know much about them. haven't ever looked anything up beyond what we discuss in my in person group. there's one girl in the group that goes on ad nauseum about such things but i tend to tune out bc she sounds pretentious and not relatable to the rest of the group ... it doesn't matter that I understand what she's talking about ..others in the group don't .. b/c she sounds like she's in a deep philosophical master's class

I was wondering, you all were talking about DBT and CBT, but I wonder, what do you all think of all the new mindfulness therapy modalities that are coming on the scene? Aren't they jsut a breakaway from Marsha Linehan's ideas in DBT? Mindfullness is great as far as it goes, but right now it's the fad. Does anybody here do WRAP by Mary Ellen Copeland? It's very helpful for me when I do it, helps me to structure my days and everything, but i am having a lot of trouble doing the very basics right now, coming out of a MAJOR depression (was suicidal last week). Still working on getting aback to sleeping-eating-bathing on a schedule. It's hard, but I have family support. Just got a good dose fo Abilify, kicked in right away, made all the difference in the world. I just have to get back into life again. -Ayla

hi all. popped in for a moment to say we can keep going in this topic for July but we'll continue chatting in "Where is everyone" topic instead of creating a new topic each month.

i have some thoughts about recent posts in here .. but i think i might finally be tired enough to sleep.

Mollie, just keep at it. It's not something that's going to go away overnight. It's taken me 8 years and a really supportive husband and friends to get to where I am today. *hugs* I know you can do this, and send me a Spark Mail if you need some extra support!

Larissa,
Thanks for letting me know I am not alone! I was part of a DBT group for a while, but the weekly copay of $30 was killing me. I am trying to go through my DBT workbook on my own. I still have a lot of trouble if anything doesn't go the way I expect (interpersonally). I kind of internally wig out.

Mollie, I had borderline personality disorder. I don't struggle with it much anymore, but it ruled my life in my early 20's. If there's a DBT class near you, you should try it. It helps a lot. I did mine at home on my own, but it's much easier if you have a class. You just have to sit there and tell yourself over and over when you are in a trigger situation that they are not abandoning you, that you are worth it and that you are stronger than this. I remember one time in my early 20's when I would be waiting for someone to come pick me up for church, and if they were 5 minutes late I would start crying thinking they abandoned me. I still get that way sometimes, but it's much better.

i've been doing well. great and crazy week. mostly good. some physical scary things on Wed but i know what went askew. i had an actual NAP today. haven't had a successful one in YEARS. so that was awesome. did i mention Tues i booked and paid for week stay in San Fran end of Aug (flight and hotel and ballpark tickets). i've been trying to keep up with what's posted here but i was and am keeping weird hours.

SUPERMODEL: do you have DBT or CBT available near you? that's Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. both can most help with developing more positive, realistic, and balanced ways of thinking and believing. we do exercises (outloud discussion and paper worksheets) to try to recognize recent events and the automatic thoughts about them (interpretation) and then what are feelings are about the event and interpretation ... which leads to action urges (can be anything you want to do about the event or interpretation or feelings) .. then choose more healthy positive action to take. it takes time and practice to think about events that have happened .. and to retrain your brain and you to act different/healthier next time. ... maybe pray with your 5 year old? she might just be interested in what you're trying to do when she's not around and therefore keeps getting up.

Well, I hate to admit it but I have had a couple REALLY BAD self-control days and binges. But I have been independent from my hubby, though, in the sense that I am trying to do what I want to do without worrying about what/how he'll think about it.

Larissa - Mollie is my name :-). Thanks for the advice. It's hard for me because in addition to the bipolar diagnosis I've also been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder which, if you don't know anything about it, means that I panic at the notion of abandonment. A lot of my clinging has to do with fear of abandonment and the perception that he doesn't care about the relationship. I so badly want to move past this fear of abandonment and feel like I could be OK on my own but I don't know how to start! Anyhow CONGRATS on the loss of 6.2 pounds! In a week? Amazing. Just remember that carbs are an essential nutrient!

Supermodel - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy combines CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), which focuses on changing the way you think, with radically accepting the things you cannot change and developing healthy ways to cope with those things and establish hope. Here is the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectical_behavior_therapy We can totally be your support group online. I have a DBT workbook, and it's helped me a lot in the past though I haven't looked at it lately.

Supermodel, DBT is short for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. It's a kind of therapy where you do a lot of taking your thoughts and turning them around. Like, instead of "I can't do X" you say "I CAN do X, and here's how" From what I hear it's hard work but it gets great results. Hi everyone, good luck with your goals. I am going to try and workout and lift weights more often.
Kimberly, I was reading your first post and you were talking about going to DBT. In your group you talked about automatic thoughts. My mom thinks that I have A.N.T.S. automatic negative thought syndrome. Can you give me any advice if possible? Also, I had post-partum depression for a yr and a 1/2 and sometimes intrusive thoughts pop in my head once in a while and the baby will be 2 in a couple mos. Ugh, I know I need to tell my Dr. This but I don't see him till the 26th. Maybe a support group would be nice. What does DBT stand for?
I also bought a prayer candle, I tried to pray last night but got interrupted by my 5 yr old who won't stay in her bed after I put her down for the night. I get so frustrated!

Molly (is that your name?) I had a lot of similar issues. I was overly obsessed with being close to Geo. When I first moved in with him, we lived in a tiny studio. I mean tiny, no room for a bathroom door, no kitchen at all. We cooked on a camp stove. He would be on the other side of the studio, 15 feet away on the computer and I would ask him to come lay down so we could talk. He kept saying he could hear me just fine where he was (he was trying to break me of my addiction, he wasn't trying to be an ass). The more he said no at first the madder I got. But I finally came around and realized he was doing it for my own good. It's taken me 7 years, but I can finally be alone most of the time. Sometimes I do need him, but it's nothing like it used to be. I don't know how he did it with me begging him all the time, but I'm glad he was strong to make me strong. I don't know if you are in a relationship or not, but try your best to fight on your own before you ask someone else (unless it's something really bad, like being suicidal). Soon you will get used to it and be even stronger.

As for me gaining my independence from carbs, it's going well. I've lost 6.2 pounds in a week and I'm getting used to it. When Carol Ann gets back, she's going to be my buddy, as well as my brother. I'm so lucky to have outside support since I don't know if Geo is going to be okay with me doing this. I'm going to try, though. I can be strong.

Hey everyone. I disappeared for a while because I sort of let myself go in many aspects of my life. I have major interpersonal issues and tend to withdraw from everyone and everything when I am feeling depressed. But here I am. I am going to try to make stopping by here a regular thing again.
The topic of "gaining my independence" really is my ultimate goal in life. I am a very needy and insecure person in general and feel like I need to cling to people and things to define myself, so gaining my independence is both necessary and seemingly an impossible feat. This month I am going to make my main goal just being independent in general, though I am not sure how to do that. I am going to take steps to be less clingy and needy of my husband (I am excessively so) in particular. I also want to focus on being aware of when I am concerned with others' thoughts (which is often) and trying to discern why I am so concerned in the first place, and then practice letting go of such worries altogether.

Whew. It's going to be a tiring yet hopefully cathartic month.

My son brought over ribs to barbque and I made macaroni salad. Also have a lot of different fruit from the co-op. Yummy!

I tried calling Courtney and her cell phone number doesn't work anymore. I've seen her on Facebook via mobile, so I know she has a phone, but won't reply to my calls or mail. I hope she is okay.

I had a great time last night at Red White & Boom at the ballpark. The opening band (www.newhollow.com) were really talented. the weather was perfect. and we had a great view for the fireworks.

tonight we'll go "across town" (aka 1.5 miles away) to my aunt's house to see the fireworks show.

i have not heard from Courtney in months. I've checked to see if it's listing her as inactive leader yet but it hasn't. there isn't an easy way to see the last time she posted on a topic here but I'm pretty sure it was longer ago than May. I sent a mail in hopes she'd respond but nothing so far.

What are your plans for the 4th? My mom and I are going to watch fireworks on the river.

Carrie .. you may have trouble doing new things ... but if this situation or behavior is bothering you (which is understandable and warranted) then going to a support group is the best thing you can ever do. You should feel at home and safe in the group. if it's nervous to go the first time. see if you can track down the leader's name and let them know your fears so they know to look for you. and give them a heads up whether you want minimal attention brought to yourself or not.

This month I am going to gain my independence by not listen to my drunk husband belittle me. I will go to an al-anon group like my pdoc suggested, even though doing new things are very hard for me

This month I am going to gain my independence from carbs. I'm starting a low carb diet with Carol Ann so I have a buddy! Yesterday I had about 50 carbs, which is higher than the 25 I should have done, but that was because I had some chicken tenders on the train.

Yesterday was Murphy's Law on the train. Whatever could go wrong, went wrong at the worst possible time. We had to sit in one place for 2 hours because they were working on the tracks and we had to wait for 2 southbound trains to pass (we were going north). When the train started moving again, everyone cheered. But there were so many other times that we stopped for no reason. I was supposed to get to my stop at 9:15 pm and ended up getting there at 1:15 am. Then it was the ride back to my mom's. I went straight to bed. I'm feeling better today, and I hope that I can have a good rest of my trip!

helps if i slow down and read all the written words.

nightwings: i have always found the opposite to be true (for some things) .. for me it's easier to go somewhere unfamiliar with new people places and things b/c it's all NEW and fresh... nothing old and set in their ways and not repetitive. i can share as little or as much as I want and am not bogged down by old habits or situations. and not bored by someone repeating their oh-so-exciting-or-boring story to me for the 2nd-4th-17th time.

ROSES: take a note from my blog today ... speak affirmations OUT LOUD. the more i say something OUT LOUD it gives it voice and power and i can recognize it as unhealthy or begin to believe it's healthy... in my head is one thing but out loud and preferably to others it becomes a thing that must be dealt with. use your voice for good. leave yourself pick-me-ups, positives, goals, notes, smilies, stickers, whatever. if you're not sure what motivates you just pick a few things. leave a gold star on the treadmill or on the apple on the counter ... so that next time you see if you can positivitely trigger your brain to smile and know that you're doing good.

Awesome Nightwings .. those are achievable tasks ... even if and when they seem difficult .. it'll be worth it .. YOU are WORTH it

all - in case i wasn't clear this is the regular chat for the month with an added twist of a question/goal

-- i've gotten quite a bit done today and it feels great!
sold an item. put some cash in my pocket and rest into the bank. paid back a long overdue debt from 2010 [which feels GREAT bc i doubt she ever expected to get paid back but i could tell i wasn't high on the friendship list after that]. got my hair cut. made 17 (ok maybe like 7) hot speed laps through Walmart waiting on photos to print and picking up a few things. more speedy laps through the store when i realized i screwed up photo order and got it corrected. and some more errands.

made it to DBT and we talked about gratefulness and learning to recognize events and automatic thoughts and healthier alternatives.

then i got some super yummy Holy Guacamole food cart on the way home. it felt great directly supporting a family who loves what they do. i'm not sure if it's totally healthy but maybe if i leave out the sour cream and cheese then it should be. all organic locally grown ingredients.

but i love when I'm like THIS and excited and clear headed.. and i don't feel out of control. i feel normal. i feel good. sure i'm thinking about a ton of things but so far i've not skipped over or left anything undone. i don't have to be like this all the time but it's really good and really healthy to stop and recognize and appreciate the positivity!!

This month, I will work on self-esteem. On some days, it is hard to get out of the bed in the morning much less feel confident and optimistic.

This month, I will try to regain my independence by taking things one day at a time. If need be, one hour at a time, one minute at a time, etc. Will also work at radical acceptance. I have struggled so hard with that one. All I know is that it is crucial for me to move ahead.

I have been very discouraged, by the disorder, by my body, work, etc. It has been hard to even care.

Most of the time I take on too much, and I think it may be self-sabotage. It's easier to stay in the place you know than go to a place that is unfamiliar.

Start using this topic July 1st. Share what you will work on to gain your independence this month?

... start walking to the mailbox and back?
... make extra trips up and down the stairs?
... cut out or cut back on soda? sugar? sodium?
... meditate once a day?
... walk away from stressors?
... -- fill in the blank --
