I am barely spending at all. I look forward to the day when I can afford to spend a little more. I also am looking forward to the day when I am out of debt!

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.

LOL!

We have been being super-cautious, but because of a little household mess in the past few months, we have gotten off course with our saving & budgeting, have had to spend more than we like, and are just now really starting to get back on track.

I think that I am vetoing any and all extra spending starting in June to get us straightened out. :(

Fortunately, I have a car that is paid for. We "write a car payment to ourselves" each month and when our 2000 Saturn goes to its great reward, we will buy the best used car we can find.

Not to be a negative Nellie but, I expect there to be inflation of price above and beyond what we are seeing.

I think that Americans not spending money is sending a message to Washington "Hey, we want this mess fixed!"

NOT spending money is one way to keep the pressure on. I try to stay away from politics but, in the case of my shrinking dollar and increasing expenditures, I don't see how I can.

I had to take out a car loan and buy a "new" used car a little while back. It really hurts to write those big checks for the rent and the car payment. My hand just doesn't want to write those huge amounts....

There was much rejoicing!

I too live buy by cash and I am on a fixed disability income. I am raising a grandson too who is seven. I have to think before I spend. It isn't easy . It takes a lot of sacrifice.

I am a cash only spender, so I do alright. It really makes me think before I spend.

Glad to know several of us are in the same boat. Yesterday, my SO bought a flat wide screen TV (not a huge one). It's the only thing she really wants and it's her early Christmas present this year.

Next week, I'm replacing my ancient eMac (if anyone even remembers: it weighs a ton!) with a brand new desktop iMac.

I'm almost 64. As I was walking to class today, the thought struck me, "If not now, when?" I really do have the money to buy things and I live quite reasonably. Who was it who said, "I've been poor and I've been rich but I'd rather be rich." LOL The French have a wonderful word: rich is "riche," poor is "pauvre" and then there's "assez," which means to have enough. I just love that expression as that's what I am, "assez."

Best wishes to all.

I am trying to overcome my fear of spending.

It's been such a tough 2 years, even though we personally have not had any major financial hardships, that I worry. Even with an emergency fund!

It was hard when our retirement balances plummeted ... it got harder when my honey's company stopped 401k contributions and froze the pension plan ... it got even harder when our son decided that he hates his college where he goes absolutely free and wants to go somewhere else (yes, he really is)!

Our budget this year includes saving about half of our income (either long term or short term), and yet I still don't want to buy the items we have budgeted in. I even had a few panic attacks about it.

So, yeah, I get fearing to spend!!

But, I am working at it. We recently got my husband a new laptop. That was hard for me, but I did it!! I even encouraged him to select some upgrades that I knew would really make him happier with it.

I don't think that being afraid to spend money is strange at all. I am the same way. My background is a little different, but I have a terrible time sometimes spending money, even on things that I actually need.

What if you gave yourself a gift card? Then you could replace some of the old stuff without spending money, you would be using a gift card. I know that sounds silly, but hey, if it works.... !

I can see being nervous with a big expenditure coming up, as well. Someone mentioned an emergency fund, be sure that you have six months expenses in it, and you will know you are covered.

Good luck, sweetie, let us know what you decide to do!!

Thanks for all the great feedback. I think people with eating problems often have problems with money, too. Either over or under spending....

I failed to mention that I'm also nervous because my SO and I looked at an apartment last week that we both really like and will probably be moving in together next month. We've been together for about two years now and are both in our 60's! (Of course, we had been in long term relationships before.)

We've both retired and know we want to live together but it's still scary! She's a wonderful person & I feel extremely fortunate to have her (and her grand kids to visit!) in my life. Nonetheless, that's another scary thing for me.

I lived with one person for over 25 years and that ended in 2006. I thought we would be together forever. Someone once said to me, "Make room for the unexpected." How true....

Best wishes to all.

I think we have saved and conserved for so long, that it is hard to spend. I am not so quick to turn my money over, something that most business expect because we have done that so easily. I am amazed how people just spend without any thought.

I'm also afraid to spend money sometimes. Instead of buying luxury item for myself, I'd save it for food or for the children's needs. But deep inside of me, I really wanted that item.

Sometimes we're just over cautious waiting for something to go wrong. As the previous sparker said, if you have your emergency fund and you can do it cash, and it's something you want, it's okay to treat yourself.

Psalms 34:7 - Delight your self in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Before you ask God for Anything, remember to first thank him for Everything

I understand what your saying, sometimes I find it hard to spend money on myself, although I can usually justify it, and only when I have the cash to do it. Seems everything cost so much, I think I am pretty frugal for the most part, my hubby too, so then it makes it really hard. I just bought a new recliner recently, really had thought I would buy a leather one, but can't justify the cost, bought microfiber. I guess I don't like to spend the extra if I don't have too. Not afraid, but really can't do it.

If you have an emergency fund to fall back on if something happens, it is OK to spend the money on things you need. Then you don't have to be afraid if something else comes up. Just don't overextend yourself or put anything on credit.

As a former compulsive spender, it's easy for me not to spend money. The hard thing for me is to spend money. I'm 63 and I have a reasonable standard of living. I have a really old computer and two ancient TVs. I just committed to getting a new computer and a new TV. I can afford both but I'm scared to death to purchase these items.

I always think something bad is going to happen to me if I spend money. Is this nuts or what? emoticon
