I know I haven't been around. I've been so busy but I felt so guilty about not being able to log on and spark. I've been getting ready for our upcoming vacation to Hawaii next week. I hope you're doing well yourself.

i know things are going good now and not so stressed with the business so there's no reason for me to smoke and plus it's disgusting lol. there's a filipino owned tattoo shop down in long beach that i'll be guest-spotting @ --i'd go sooner but i've got so much other stuff to do first like passports and stuff among a bunch of other tattoo travel dates before then lol.

way to go!!! haha yah i try not to be obsessive with weighing myself either but my curiousity gets the best of me sometimes ehehehe.

Thanks. I got up on the scale again this morning. I know, I know...I shouldn't be weighing myself more than once a week but I'm so curious. I'm glad I did though because I'm back to my 50lb weight loss again. Woohoo!!! I hope you're not stressed anymore with the business. Take care of yourself now. No smoking!!! At least you're actually streaking that in, haha. I do live in Cali, about 45-1hr from Long Beach. Oooh, is there a special event that you're going to be tattooing here? That's awesome!

lol yah i know what you mean!!! and this june is busy for me too, 3 family birthdays plus some friends birthdays, then a trip to winnipeg! I'm trying not to eat out til i go to winnipeg to see rihanna in concert though ---my one indulgence will be red lobster since there isn't one here in the city i live in.

i kinda got off track in may with the whole business move i even started smoking that month (disgusting i know) from all the stress -- i'm on day 1 smoke free finally so i'm going to have to try harder.

hey didn't you say u were in cali somewhere? I'm going up to long beach, cali in either jan/feb next year to tattoo :)

Hi Velle! Still hanging in there. I met my 50lb weight loss mark, then I sabotaged myself so I'm trying to get there again (2 lbs). June is gonna be a lot of decisions and temptations. Every weekend there's a party so I'm going to have to really think before I act. I'm going to Hawaii in July so I can't be sabotaging myself anymore. I wish there was a way my body doesn't blow up after a day of stupid mistakes coz that's what happens. Grrr...I'm even afraid to be on maintenance mode when I finally get there. I hate my bad familial genes.

Hi Raidan! I know how you feel...my family makes the best filipino food and we party a lot! That's why I get in trouble many times especially during weekends, holidays, and parties. I pretty much prepare myself for the upcoming fiesta by eating small snacks beforehand so I'm not messing my metabolism or starving myself. I also try to fit a good workout in. If I've done plenty of damage during the feast, I don't beat myself about it, and just get back from where I left off. Why do even more damage right? So far, that's how I've been doing it and it's been working well for me. As for rice, I either eat 1/3 cup - 1 cup max or none at all. Sometimes I make brown rice. Sometimes because I'm lazy to make it I just won't eat it at all. I can go days without it now unlike before where I had to have it everyday. That was the main adjustment I had to make. As for mashed potatoes or other substitutions, I don't think it would taste as good esp with sinigang and adobo (my favorites). Just saying...lol!

Hi all,

I was wondering if you all have any strategies for when you know your going to eat a pinoy dish later in the day (my mom cooks, and when she cooks it is usually a feast because several friends come over). I've been limiting white rice, but I wanted to know if there was a better substitute for rice (brown and white). Maybe mash potatoes? I'm having adobo and sinigang later. I also will try to eat less during the day and put in a few xtra minutes of exercise.

Thanks

Wow I haven't visited this site in so long....I need to do this more. I'm also trying to run except I do like to run on a threadmill cause I can do 2 minute runs at a faster speed and then walk for like 3 to 4 mins until I've done 45 mins long. I'm now up to doing 15 min/mile walking and running. I want to work up to a point where I'm running the whole time. Also when I'm pushing myself, I can put my hands on the side bars and it helps me. We have a threadmill at home so I'm lucky cause I don't think I want to be at the Y all huffing and puffing like that!! LOL!!

Keep on working hard mentally and physically!!!

Stay with my goal!

Finish what I started!!

I'm thankful for the C25K program because it turned me into a RUNNER, which is unbelievable even for myself. Every time I used to hear people say they run, I would either get jealous that they can do it or think it's just boring. However, I did realize that I do a lot of thinking when I run and I think that helps take my mind off how long I still have to go. That's why I prefer running outside because I can't stand being on the treadmill and seeing the timer. Even when I cover it, I manage to take a peak, and that does not encourage me. People running outside encourage me and I like to think I inspire people to run too because some who have not run before are running now, lol! But yeah, if you're interested in running, the C25K program is the best place to start. Yay!

lol i ramble all the time! i haven't tried zumba yet sounds like fun. I mostly do kickboxing dvd workouts (I love to kick stuff hahah), weight training, core workouts. I'm getting a treadmill next sunday after we move in to the new place woohoo!! I think i'm going to try this running thing with the c25k program since it seems to working so well for you! I used to walk around everywhere too, to work and stuff but not so much anymore. Once I get settled in, maybe i can start again, especially with the whether getting nicer. It snowed here the other day but it didn't stay thank god -- today was beautiful.

I went to the folklore festival here today to check out all the ethnic food and dances and I helped out at the filipino booth - we sold bbq pork and beef, adobo, and banana turon it turned out really well! just wish we had more filipino volunteers in our city to dance :(

Running is great! I never thought I could be doing this and it's pretty awesome to think I'm doing something I didn't ever think I could do. So far I just finished my 7th week and I'm on to my 8th hopefully tomorrow. I'm a little behind because I took the kids to Disneyland on Friday (which was supposed to be my last day for the 7th week. At least I got some exercise from all that walking around the park. And of course the weekend was too busy to even get a workout in. It's okay though..I'll make it up this week. My mom got me a copy of her zumba DVDs and I'm excited to try those after I get my running for this week done. Sorry, just realized I was rambling. What do you do to workout?

Easter turned out ok. Originally, we had planned to go to a park on the beach but things got in the way so it didn't happen. It was a gloomy, cold day anyway so that was okay. I just invited my in law's kids and my young cousins for an Easter egg hunt at my Mom's. Food was great! My uncle made yummy food but I hope I didn't get into too much trouble. Didn't give in much to Easter candy either but Filipino desserts especially family homemade is soooo good!

I hope your Easter turned out well. I know how parents can be...my mom can be the same way but i just let it go in one ear and out the other.

So what are the plans for Easter weekend?

Hubby & I will be going over to my older cousin's house for supper with the whole family....mmm can't wait for all the yummy goodness my cousin is an awesome cook :)

My dad found out the new location for the business and he's not happy because he thinks it's in a bad neighborhood (it used to be years ago but it has since cleaned up and there are many new respectable businesses in the area - I actually did my research before jumping into it *sigh*) --so i'm not looking forward to that if he starts trouble on sunday dinner lol.

Hope you all have a awesome Easter weekend :) emoticon

Wow! That's so awesome. Maybe if I ever go there I can come find you so you can draw me a tattoo. Thanks for noticing my efforts. I've been working hard. Last week not so much, but the most important is that I keep coming back to the game right? Hope all is well with you. I'm glad business is booming.

Yes Abby, that's some of my work you saw on FB it is crazy busy and of course now that we are trying to move it's even more hectic --- everyone wants to get their tattoo done before summer starts so they can show it off lol.

I've noticed all that hard work you've been doing with the running its so awesome that you are doing that!!!! Maybe once things settle down at the new shop i'll be able to start that too, oh and we are getting a dog soon so that should help me get out and about more often :)

Running is something I totally enjoy doing now that I never thought I would ever do in the past. Take it slow and on your own pace so you can eventually get to your goal and yeah, definitely consult with your doctor first.

It's great to hear that your running is working. I'm just starting to run myself. It's going slow, but I get such a charge when I start to see the amount of time I can actually run increases. I am taking it slow, since I'm new to this. Since I'm beginning this in my 40's I have to schedule an appt. with my Dr. for a possible stress test to make sure this is safe. Wish me luck!

Wow! Is that your work I saw on your facebook page? It's amazing!!! I've been wanting one on my back and I would definitely choose you, but you're far... It seems you have been busy lately but it's cool. I totally understand, but don't forget about us ok? I've been doing ok, not much going on but I have been doing really good with my running. Have you noticed? I'm so happy i can actually say I can run. It's an amazing feeling. I don't wanna jinx and say the P word but I've been consistenly losing...which I'm very happy about.

ach sorry haven't been posting as much the last couple of weeks... a lot of stress and craziness going on over here.

on a good note: I will be moving my business to a bigger location and there will be an apartment to live in in the same building!! and we will be able to have a dog there too so I'll have an excuse to take walks in the new neighborhood :) I can't wait to move next month and get settled in.

How is everyone????

lol yes i agree - I still love white rice but I also love brown rice. I don't have white rice very often anymore since I got married but when I do have it I still have a hard time limiting it to less than a cup.

Has anyone tried red rice? i love it too. a few years ago i used to mix the the white rice with the red and brown and it was really good! there's no red rice here where i live now though so it's usually just brown rice if i do eat it.

The only time I have white rice now is when we order out. It was really hard at first to give it up, but now I really like brown rice. I cook the long grain brown rice. I think it comes close to white rice. The short grain browns are okay, but too "earthy" or too nutty or something. It cooks up in a rice cooker the same way as white, but use 2 parts water to 1 part brown rice.

It was definitely the hardest thing for me to give up rice when I first started out on this journey. I started without the 5 factor diet. It's a pretty healthy diet but I was always grumpy because I couldn't eat a lot of what I wanted to eat. I still kind of use it's guidelines but I modify it into the spark way which is better for me because a happy me makes a happy family! So I still try to alternate my white rice with brown rice which is fine but sometimes if all you have is white rice, then what are you gonna do? Still, when I eat white rice, I'm okay now with eating 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 cup, depending on what else is on my plate. I'm not as addicted to rice as I used to be. I don't even look for it anymore if it's not there but if it is I give in sometimes especially if my ulam is yummy (I'm a sucker for pork sinigang and kare kare and adobo). Man, the advantages and disadvantages of being Filipino...

Hi gals, Okay I'll try to post here too. I only have filipino dishes occasionally and it's true a lot of our dishes are high in calories but they are also so yummy!! The problem is not the dish itself but how much we eat of it with rice....it is so hard just to eat a half cup of rice...who does that?? Although I've been trying limiting my rice to one cup and then slowly go down to a half cup. I have six kids and a husband that love filipino food, as a matter of fact I just cooked pork sinigang two days ago but that is because my little girls begged me to make it. I ate some on sunday but only a cup of rice and filled my bowl with the baby bok choy. Like I said I probably make filipino food once a week and I only make the big dishes like Pancit and Pancit lug lug during the holidays.....I gained like 14 pounds from Thanksgiving to X-mas just by eating all that filipino food. I've finally lost it and it's March but that's from working out and watching my portions.....Next holiday I will try not to do that cause it's hard work to lose it specially as I get older.
Anyway it's nice to see you all here and we all have to keep this up cause it's nice to talk to people that have the same issues as all of us!!

Keep on working hard mentally and physically!!!

Stay with my goal!

Finish what I started!!

I love it!!! It's definitely lighter than bringing a laptop to work or using the comp at work (because I feel we're being observed). I only have the wifi capable iPad because I figured there's free wifi everywhere but it might be nice to get the 3G capable one when you don't have access but that just means spending more money every month. It's pretty much like using my iPhone but in a bigger screen. You still can't open things that need an adobe flash either, but I'm in love with it regardless. I use it all day at work and at home. It's just more convenient.

how do you like the ipad? i'm thinking of getting one and using that to bring in to work instead of leaving my main comp there or even lugging around a laptop back and forth....

Yeah but at least you can track food and fitness when you don't have a comp around. I'm using my iPhone now as I speak. When I get home to my comp that's when I get to do the rest. Oh and sometimes at work using my iPad.

Oh yay! you're back! I hope you find the app for your bb. That's why I love my iPhone because the app helps me track everything even on the road and when I make food choices, I check my app to see what's better.

Wow! I was wondering if there was a pinoy team and so here it is. I started spark people about 3 weeks ago and I'm loving it. So far I've lost 7 lbs on top of what I lost before I started so its going well. As far as Filipino dishes, sometimes I don't even get to eat them anymore. Our dishes are obviously not the healthiest but I try to make some things here and there. So far, I've made munggo with shrimp and veggies, tinolang manok with chicken breast, adobo with chicken breast, and my mom makes me a separate brown arroz caldo when she makes regular arroz caldo for the family. Sometimes it's sayang coz my hubby prefers all the fatty dishes but whatevs...I'll eat it, lol! Keep in touch!

I agree, I feel like i'm the only one posting on the forum :)

I had started a thread for recipes under "nutrition and pinoy recipes" forum on our team page to share healthy versions of traditional pinoy recipes but so far no recipes...

most of us on the team seem to prefer to write on each others pages instead of here in the team forum but it would be really great to get everyone more active on here too!

The team also has monthly challenges:
drink 8 cups per day challenge and do at least 500 minutes of workout minutes per month challenge and those seem to be doing well :)

my fave pinoy foods are pancit (all kinds), kilawen, & longanisa mmmmm.

Also, on our main forum there are 2 "sticky" topics:

"mabuhay 2011" - where we can discuss anything really and chat, encourage others, it would be nice to keep going with this thread instead of always doing a new thread - seperate threads for everything is kind of hard to keep track of

"2011 dump site" - we can post our progress here and "dump" our lost weight and inches in here and cheer each other on :)

Hi Judi,

Yup! Let's revive the spark in PINOY SPARKS --- true, we can tweak some Filipino dishes so we don't have to completely give it up... I too am a HUGE believer in portion control, rather than restricting myself of a lot of foods. I believe that the more you restrict yourself of things, the more you crave it. But as I said... Filipino dishes can be a challenge! But there's nothing we can't do together right?!

Would you share some of your Tweaked & Healthy Recipes?

I would love to see this team revived! I've given up a lot of Filipino food because of the high fat, high calories, high sodium, high everything?? My family has a history of hypertension & heart disease so I do all I can to prevent all that. I don't eat meat, so I haven't had the food you mentioned in a long time. I do eat fish & have made pinakbet w/o the pork. I make a vegetarian pancit bihon, and a killer mongo. So it is possible to tweak some recipes & make them healthier. And who says you can't eat traditional FIlipino food? Let's help each other out & practice (my weakness) PORTION CONTROL!

Gising na ako.

Hey there my fellow Filipinos! I'm new here in Pinoy Sparks and I'd like to see if we could revive the team!

I haven't seen much activity in the group and I think we could do so much to help each other achieve our goals... As I mentioned at another post, we Filipinos, especially our food are quite unique. We're not quite Chinese, not quite Spanish, not quite anything. Our food always have a touch of Pinoy that only WE will understand --- as to why our spaghetti have hotdogs & is sweet. Like what exactly is banana ketchup? How do you count calories on Palabok/Pancit Malabon/Pancit Luglug? How do you make a healthier Kare-Kare? These are things that are uniquely our own and I know I'm not alone that going on a diet, and eating Filipino food is a struggle.

So how about it Pinoys?! Can we get active again and help each other in this journey?
