I don't have any definitive knowledge but it makes sense. If there was a blood marker for breast cancer, then there would be no need for mammograms. I know my oncologists monitor my blood work very carefully as they have been concerned about my cancer moving to my liver. Three times, they have requested further scans on my liver. In fact, my radiation was delayed as they thought it was already too late. I was originally diagnosed as Stage IV but now they think it was only Stage III but about to move into Stage IV.

Okay I am confused! I am a breast cancer survivor, 2 years, and recently went for a chest xray as the nurse practicioner I see at the cancer office wanted to rule anything out as I have developed a chronic dry cough. (Turned out to probably be a side effect of Lisinopril). Anyhow, my friend was recently diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer and her doctor mentions her cancer count in her blood to her. Well, my doctor has never mentioned a cancer count so I asked her if breast cancer had a marker in the blood they monitored and she said no! Not for breast cancer. So I asked her why they always do lab work and she said because it can come back in other areas and there are markers for certain other cancers. She said the only thing they can watch for breast cancer is mammograms and breast exams. So now I am very confused as the earlier blog I just read said her breast cancer markers were elevated! Is there or is there not a marker in the blood they watch for breast cancer? Certainly my np at the office would know. And this was just 2 days ago! Someone with definitive knowledge please respond!!

Connie - Best wishes on the PET scan results. The scan itself is actually not too bad. At least you don't have to drink those bottles of gook that you do with the MRI scans. That always makes me sick.

Connie, adding my prayers and well wishes for a good result on the PET scan. It is mixed bag when docs say "iffy" results on lab or x-ray. I always get nervous about "is it back" but at least if so you know & can start treatment as soon as possible. God's will be done & His Arms secured holding you!

Thank you, I am fortunate to be on Social Security and Medicare. The problem is I went into the "donut hole", where you have to pay 80 - 20, and I am only into the 2nd month of the year. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. emoticon

Connie, Have you applied for Social Security disability? Certain diagnoses of cancer are almost automatically approved, especially Stage III and IV. Once you get disability, you can get Medicare and do not have to be retirement age.

PET scans are great for removing uncertainty - is it back? if so, where and how big? Once you get the results, whatever they might be, then you can plan a comprehensive action plan. I also opted for exemestane for a while - much less expensive than the brand name and side effects are about the same as any other aromatase inhibitor. I'm sending support and strength vibes your way!!

Hi emoticon ,

I went to my first Brest Cancer Dr. appt since moving back to PA and my blood test CA marker is higher than the Dr. liked so he wants me to have a PET scan done, this Thurs.,
(the first one ever). I have read up on this and am not worried, and I know God is in control. Am a little nervous since I've never had one, but I am up for it!!

I didn't make much headway with finding financial help with the Femara costs, but the Dr. put me on Exemestane which is about half the cost, so that will help. So far less side effects than Femara and for that I am thankful. Thanks again for your support and encouragement, it means a lot to me. emoticon

I thank God for being in control of my life and know I can trust Him. Praise God!
