Just this week I did some reading here on SP about stretches and I found 8 stretches that are good for runners. 4 are using a wall for balance and technique and for are lying on your back. The ones that I lay on my back a three of them I found were ideal to do crunches at the same time so when I hug my knee to my chest I do 20 crunches with left, right and both knees together. This works for three of the lying down stretches. This is my present routine.
After my 5 min. dancing warm up I do close to 20 min. of stretching, then I go and challenge myself on my treadmill for 30 min. and them go and repeat my stretching routine again which adds up to 40 min of stretching with about to 80 total crunches done while stretching. Lastly I spend another 5 min dancing to music to cool-down.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food.

I know I will feel better if I stretch but yet I procrastinate! I need to get past this thought and just do it! That is my goal for this week- to stretch everyday.

The positive results achieved from just 10 minutes of stretching or gentle movement really is amazing, isn't it? Way to go, "TL"!

I just wanted to share that I have been doing 10 minutes of stretching this week - today was my fifth day in a row. It really feels good! It was hard to get motivated to do it but now that I'm on a roll I'm enjoying it. It gives me more hope than I've had in a long time. I know it's only ten minutes and it's very simple stretching but it's more movement than I've done in quite sometime. Thanks for the encouragement I've found through this site! emoticon

I am new to the team and newly diagonised with fibro. Question for anyone who may have an answer. I can do all the stretching exercises except my neck. When I try I get a severe migraine and pain level goes to a 10 in my neck area. I tried doing them in the shower and still the same things happen.

Hi CONCERNED85. Maybe you could try the stretching after you take a warm bath or shower. This way you would be a little warmer and your muscles may stretch easier. My doctor told me this and thats what I do now.

Some days it is very hard to get motivated to do the stretching. I really have to force myself to do them. They do help once I do them, but getting myself to do them can be challenging. I really have to keep driving into my head that it will help with the pain and to just get them done. I would hope this would get easier to do, but winter and cold really make it tough. I am better in the warmer weather.

Thank you for these stretches. I think they will be a good reference guide for me. I need good stretching exercises. I can't think of many more for myself. I was thinking about looking into a book. A friend had a stretching book when I was a teen. I hate to think about getting another book. I love books but I am addicted to getting books that I really want and then having trouble reading them through!

Topaz turtle. I agree about the loosing of the muscles before stretching. It does make the stretching go much better. Also the self talk motivation to get yourself to do it while you are loosing your muscles a little so your keep reminding yourself how important they are. There are a lot of helpful suggestions here too.

I agree -- these stretching tips are all very helpful. I would stress the importance of warming up before stretching. Yesterday I began some simple yoga stretches right after getting out of bed, and I have been paying for it! My lower back went into spasm, and now my legs hurt, and even my upper back is tightening up. So be careful! Before you stretch, move around for a bit (walking in place for a few minutes, a few dance steps, whatever) or take a hot bath or shower to loosen your muscles up a bit.

Take it slow and easy!

Here is a link for an article about how stretching can ease some fibromyalgia symptoms:

www.fibromyalgia-symptoms.org/fibromyalgia
_stretching.html

Here's an excerpt:
"How Does Stretching Benefit Fibromyalgia Sufferers?
Stretching is one of the best forms of exercise that someone with fibromyalgia can do. But maybe you need some reasons to stretch to get you motivated. Here are some of the many benefits of basic stretches:

1) Stretches help to elongate your muscles, helping to release stiffness and pain.
2) Simple stretching exercises increase your flexibility, allowing you to get the full range of motion in all of your joints. This will help with your daily activities, including shopping, driving, cleaning, and cooking.
3) Stretching will provide you with some much-needed time to relax, practice meditation, or just get reacquainted with yourself.
4) If you suffer from disordered sleeping, a daily stretching routine may help you to fall asleep faster and wake up less during the night."

Below is the link to SparkPeople's Reference Guide to Stretching. It is a really good overall resource, so take a look if you've got a few minutes. Plus you can earn 3 SparkPoints for reading it! Be sure to check the links at the bottom of the article for several stretching routines.

Also, please sign up for the Fibromyalgia and Exercise Team's team goal of 5 minutes of gentle stretching daily.
