I understand the mess situation quite well. I am so glad I don't have that very often anymore. I have been under lots of stress lately. That has the opposite effect on me. Everything comes out very liquid. That can making changing pouches very difficult. I am glad I didn't need to change it today. I hope I didn't eat too much lettuce on my tacos today or I might be up most of the night.

God bless you and hold you in the palm of his hand!

Couple of observations. Last night I made stir fry chicken with a ton of peppers, cauliflower, onion and carrot slices. I had it on a bed of whole grain and wild rice. Welllllll...... Let's just say that the rice compounded things not coming out smoothly and I pancaked seriously bad this morning (as far as I can tell) and totally blew my flange in the midst of voting and on my way to work. Got to work and didn't realize it had happened until I went to the bathroom to change the bag and oh dear, the mess I had. Thankfully I kept a change of underwear in a file drawer. After much cleaning up and running back to my office for a new flange and stuff, I prayed it would hold.

Didn't hold. That's when I noticed the pancaking really bad. I had a meeting to be at in minutes so I sprayed the whole area with deodorizer stuff and went. Praying it didn't blow "out" while in close quarters. Then I had a birthday lunch with office mates (who are nurses and not phased by stuff like this) and as I was eating it started again. Went to the bathroom and you could see the stuff coming through the tape, beyond the gasket/wax part. Cleaned up a bit and left for the day. :-(

My guess is that the rice put me over the edge as far as keeping it loose, it was anything but that. So, getting hubby out the door and then I'll lay down to read and get the hernia back down. Then I'll shower and change out the whole thing again. Meanwhile, stool softeners increased for the day. I'll take a dose of docusate now and again tonight. Had my daily miralax this morning. sheesh.

One interesting observation. I was stuffed last night and it was also the first time I'd had something "manufactured" - the teriyaki sauce. After I ate, I got the munchies so bad I couldn't stand myself. Ate candy bars, chips and dip....I mean like the worst PMS on the planet. It was such a craving it was insane. I've been allowing myself little treats every day or so, and have been able to stop, no problem. Last night, it was like a crazy woman took over. So, no pre-made sauces now. Not sure why it had that effect, but it was HORRIBLE.

That's my day so far, hoping everyone else's is doing better. :-)

I agree with you on the food scientists moved. I have recently learned that Olen or however you spell it that was reported to be a soybean based fat that potato chip companies, etc. starting using in the late 1990's was not reported correctly back then. I recently learned that is when P & G started selling the first artifical fat to potato chip companies, etc. It is not a meat based or vegetable based fat but totally artifical and not good for our digestive systems. Maybe this was a new type of margarine that can withstand high tempers of cooking. I don't know how many people are aware of the fact that margarine was first invented to fatten up pigs quicker for market but didn't work as the fat content was way to high and undigestible. It is also very close to being plastic without being plastic and heart doctors tell us that is better for us than butter which is a digestible fat. Hmm! Makes you think. emoticon

As for the foods that don't agree with me, I've studied the issue some more and any baked good that has sugar and fat in it DOES NOT agree with me. Pecan pie, chocolate cupcakes, German Chocolate Cream Cheese Brownies, all have an ill-effect on my whole system, because every ounce of me (and that's a lot) craves more, more, more if I so much as smell these things. Not worth it.

The paranoid side of me believes that food company scientists moved over from the cigarette companies and studied how to get us hooked on things they could manufacture cheaply, with a minimum of human effort or expenditure, that we would gladly put in our mouths in the name of nutrition. So I am keeping my distance. At least until they come up with the antidote gum to chew when you feel an uncontrollable urge to eat every piece of processed food in sight.

Oh, now I've done it. That will be the next new product on the market. Foodette gum to control uncontrollable urges to eat more that 5 servings of Rocky Road Ice Cream!!

The next time you try a raw food, try grating or shredding it. I even chop my fresh spinach into strips. I do a shredded salad with carrot, apple and zucchini, with some cinnamon. I don't need any dressing on that, and I don't think the shreds can block the stoma.??

All the same, it might still irritate, so just try a small amount. If no problems, try a larger amount, say 1/2 a serving.

Steaming those veggies like broccoli and cauliflower deals with the fibrous tissue but leaves a little of the crunch. And you don't need to eat them hot. Steam, flash cool in the freezer if you need them right away.

I can eat raw spinach, working on other stuff now. Paying with a blockage tonight :-( It's been a while since I had one too. I had cucumbers and cherry tomatoes last night and they don't want to make it out.

I've eaten peeled apples with no issues. When I add stuff that has fiber in it, I try to 'sandwich' it between a lot of food I can tolerate so that it doesn't bunch up. Most of the time it works.

I don't eat cabbage raw or cooked. Uhm... no raw veggies like cauliflower and broccoli or brussels sprouts. I used to live on them. I did have cooked from canned asparagus tips. Seemed to do ok.

Interesting that you all are having problems with fiber. Does a fiber food that bothers you raw still bother you if it is cooked?

For example, a raw apple as opposed to a baked apple?

Or raw spinach as opposed to fried or steamed?

I feel for you Sagelady2. I have had blockages in the past and it is not nice or comfortable. I have developed a peanut allergy if I eat too many. I can only eat a few. I can eat most anything except very much wheat bread or cold wheat cereal in moderation.

God bless you and hold you in the palm of his hand!

I can't do fiber, not much at all. No nuts - I had a peanut that snuck in a protein bar and the sucker was working itself out whole. Took an hour and man I felt every second as it tried to come out. Iceburg lettuce kills me. I can eat spinach and baby micro lettuce though.

I eat a fairly consistent diet of same old, same old. As long as I don't get another blockage I'm good though. Grape juice has been my lifesaver for those.

I no longer have any food issues. My issues were related to radiation and chemotherapy. We finally have cancer and diarrhea conquered, at least for now.

I did go through a long time when I could eat nothing raw. Only cooked fruits and vegetables.

I know many of you wound up with your intestinal ostomy after IBS or Crohns or something similar, and quite often those problems continue.

I wish I could help you with those issues. I'll be no help there. However, if you are dissatisfied with your pouching system, I might have something for you to try. I don't need to use tape to go swimming, and I no longer have rashes. No adhesive to clean off. Easy to remove.

Send along a spark mail if you have these issues.

I understand TNLADY1960, I finally stopped have as much trouble after the 5 year mark but still can't eat lots of high fiber foods very well. emoticon I recently found out peanuts & how certain foods are cooked are problem. I seldom have cramps but do know where nearly every bathroom is along my weekly errands route in atleast 3 or 4 towns. My stomach never quit being sensetive to pressure of any kind.

Yea, Pinkhaired mom, iceburg lettuce has also caused me trouble in the past. I can eat it now but in small quantities. Thanks for sharing. I have found that probotics & aloe vera juice help with flares but have to be taken regularly. I eat leaf or two on a sandwich or in a taco salad but take 2 or 3 meals to eat that taco salad. emoticon can be the way we feel with flare ups. Some days I get tired of being so careful & miss some foods.

Iceberg lettuce and raw herbs like basil and peppermint are the worst, but what really causes me to flare is something like poppy or fig seeds.

I am glad to hear that you don't have any trigger foods. I had a blockage one time from not chewing up mushrooms good enough. At that time, I wasn't wearing my dentures & didn't realize there were mushrooms in the lasagna until it was too late. I had never eaten at that restraurant prior to that experience. My favorite fruit to eat is watermelon. With all the vitamins & minerals, I feel refreshed after I eat it. I have trouble when it comes to moderation some days.

God bless you and hold you in the palm of his hand!

No foods bother me too much. Coffee makes it move too fast but I then take Immodium if it gets bad. I have gotten a blockage from nuts especially if you don't drink enough water with them. But they do have oily calories. I try to eat more veggies than fruit. Our strict heart doctor says fruit is bad and turns to sugar so use sparingly. That is not fun.

My trigger foods are whole wheat, rye, whole grain bread or cereal. I can only eat chicken in gravy with no reactions. I recently found out that peanuts are out because of the oil content. I can eat small amounts of peanut butter. I love fresh fruits and vegetables in season but have to watch the fiber content. I do get diarhea from cole slaw & saurkraut but since it naturally cleans the blood. I do it maybe once a month and usually feel better 2 days later. emoticon
