I have also been in the hospital and have not had any problems with getting vegetarian food. The Dietician came to my room with a list of foods and asked what I wanted each day. It was actually good.

Im a vegetarian... and have been in the hospital a few times, and have requested vegetarian meals... and they have been pretty good actually! so If you need to be admitted to a hospital that you know beforehand find out if they have special dietary meals for vegans, it's becoming more popular now.

Oh Crap! A whole new thing to worry about! Seriously, what the heck am I going to do when my time comes, and it will, when I need some outside help.
I feel a little advocacy and volunteerism coming on. If I act now, maybe I can assure that something adequate will be in place when I need it.

in the nursing home where my wife works there is a vegan and it has thrown every body, nobodys knows what to do. She told me they were giving him a cup of peanuts a day for protein. I would hate to see what he is forced to eat. But it might be healthier than normal food. I work there and I know it is bad

Hospital- see if you can have someone bring you food. After I had my daughter my hospital brought me a plate of peas and a side of peas and carrots as a meal. (Gross!) Fortunately my hubby went out to get me food.

Nursing home- I would try to educate them on the diet and provide the nursing home with a list of items/recipes to get them started.

Good question. My husband's grandmother couldn't even get a diabetic diet in her nursing home (!!!!!!). They'd check her blood and give her Rx, but not adjust her diet. That was in a nicer nursing home, too.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for those of us still young enough to do something about it to get involved in nursing home patient advocacy. It's one of those things we think we'll never need and can put off thinking about...

For now, one option is to live in a Seventh Day Adventist/Buddhist/Hindu nursing home.

Also, these days it's not simply a matter of just keeping the elderly at home. Many folks have such specific medical needs that it would be irresponsible for a layperson to take on their care.

You are worth it!

gluten lactose and some other allergies are delt with but even the dietary planners don't know anything about a vegan diet and if they do the people preparing the food may not follow the directions, the resident is at their mercy. Not just in food but in care as well. I have seen some bad thing happen when my aunt was recently in a home.

Eventually these institutions will need to make adjustments. As we all begin to age and the rate of allergies continues to rise, it will crucial for the health of the patients/residents and from a customer service stand point. I know that where I work, we had a patient that was gluten free and was provided such.

I agree! Every time I visit a restaurant I view the menu online first and then ask the chef for a vegan option. I offer a lot of feedback too! People are getting the point, even if it sometimes means eating ahead and then telling the wait staff that I'm unable to eat in their restaurant because I couldn't make arrangements with the kitchen. If enough people say something, you're bound to start getting better service.

As for the nursing home, I've had calls for my personal chef service for vegan meals that were pureed for sick invalids. If the situation gets very desperate, I would definitely work with dietetic staff.

I don't think so, my wife is still working and what she is saying is the kids that are coming out of school don't know anything to start with except how to talk or text on the cell phone. I am dreading the day I go in to a home because the help is deplorable. recently I had my aunt in a home for 8 years and if it wasn't that Kathy and I were there several times a week she would have got little care

That's a broad generalization. Nursing homes have changed over the years. You need to work with the staff dietitian.

Hi, we all know the quality of hospital food and nursing home isn't any better. What is a vegan to do in a hospital or nursing home
