I was in the store today looking at yogurt and saw that Yoplait's ingredients say 'kosher gelatin'. I wasn't sure what that meant, so I looked it up. It means that the gelatin has to be made in a vegetarian way to meet the Jewish kosher guidlines - no meat or fish products in it. So, I think if you want to follow the meal plan that has Yoplait in it, it would be okay. I am looking for alternatives though - at this time Chobani seems to be my best bet.

I didn't know about gelatin either, but I just recently became vegetarian. Is there a gelatin-free version of yogurt similar to Yoplait that anyone uses?

I also hadn't really thought about cow's milk either, but I drink soy or almond milk anyway.

emoticon for the great info on this thread!

I agree with jaz milk is killing and animal as is eating an egg. If it is murder to kill an unborn child is it less killing to kill an unborn chicken in the form of its egg. I don't think it will become easier to eat vegan in the future it will be harder there are people that want the health movement shut down because when people get healthy by food and supplements they lose billions in sales of animal products and processed food. The medical industry suffers to when people are healthy. The purchased politician of these big industries like monsanto will see that it happens

Sugar is another item you have to be careful about. Most commercial sugars have been treated with bone char as the whitening agent. I was really stunned when I learned about that.

Couple of things recently that surprised me.
* Dairy free, egg free mayonnaise - was looking at one yesterday. Of course I know not to take anything for granted. One of the items on the ingredients list was ...anchovies. WTH?!
* Coconut milk (powdered) - compared 5 brands in the Asian specialty grocery. ALL contained casein (from milk) as well as coconut. Next time I'll have to check the coconut cream in cans and see what they put in the that. Not a big issue for me, I usually use just dried coconut and make milk from that myself if I need it and that's not very often.

Yeah - I do the same thing. If someone else doesn't like what I am cooking - make it yourself. I am not the only grocery shopper in the house, so there are meats, etc. However, it's not at home that I have a problem eating vegan. It's when we are on the road and there is frequently nothing on the menu that doesn't have some sort of dairy or egg in it.

In our house it is easy, my wife cooks vegan. It's delicious. Everyone else can eat it or find themselves something else to eat... of course, the rest of the food is usually vegan.

Yeah - it's not so easy though, when I am the only vegetarian in a house of 6 people. My family wants meat with their meals. I don't. I do the best I can on the vegan thing - but am absolutely vegetarian.

Yes - wine and beer - watch your shampoos and soaps, too. I also don't wear leather, fur or other animal derived clothing. It's amazing all the places where animal-based products show up.

I hope that in the years ahead it becomes easier to choose to not eat animals in any form when you go out. It isn't so much to ask to have that option. Restaurants that give me that option will get my money over others.

Funny you say that - I was JUST having that same conversation with my son and his friend about an hour ago. Since I eat on the road so much, I have a hard time avoiding dairy products. It's hard enough making sure everything is vegetarian. I get so tired of eye-rolls from servers when I ask them to please verify that there is no chicken broth in their tomato soups. When I am at home, I follow a vegan diet. When I am on the road, I do the best I can, but there are frequently no vegan options available at the restaurants we go to.

Every vegetarian I know cares about gelatin.

I am constantly learning, too, though. Creatine, for instance can be from a vegetarian or animal source - as can rennant (an ingredient in cheese). Therefore, not all cheese is vegetarian. Wine is frequently not vegetarian as it is sometimes processed through a charcoal bone filter. Beer is sometimes processed using fish, making many beers non-vegetarian.

While everyone has their own path to follow, just an FYI that milk is 100% linked to death of the animal.

Put simply, all mammals, just like humans, must be pregnant/give birth in order to lactate. Cows don't magically produce milk all their lives. :)

So... how does this happen? Cows are inseminated/impregnated and birth their young. More than half, I think about 75% (since ALL males, and 50% of females) become veal. This is a constant, never ending cycle. Purchasing milk is directly supporting veal.

So veal is a direct byproduct of the milk industry, not even the agriculture business can deny this. I guess you can think of it as a secondary level of connectedness, but I personally can't get past that.

Because, if we did not buy the milk, the calf would not be killed - or even be born and killed just for the mothers milk.

But like I said, we all have our own path.

I don't follow the meal plan either - I just check it for ideas as you do, Jaz. I will put even LESS faith in the plan now that I see that it's really not as vegetarian as it claims to be. I don't drink milk either and don't eat cheese or eggs.

My husband and I travel a lot for work - which means eating in restaurants. He is not a vegetarian and likes meat with his meals - which means we don't eat in too many vegetarian restaurants. I have no problem finding vegetarian items on most menus (even if it means eating off the side menu). However, finding Vegan options is often a different story. For that reason, I don't claim to be a vegan.

People who eat gelatin, chicken broth or seafood aren't vegetarian - even if they avoid it MOST of the time - just like people who do eat dairy are not Vegan even if they avoid those products most of the time.

I would expect more from this site than to make a very basic mistake like that. They may have suggested I eat a steak for snack.

I'm learning something new every day! I have never met a vegetarian who cared about gelatin and I've been one for over 20 years and haven't either. I'll have to remember that if I ever make something for another veg-head :)

I am not a vegan either. Vegetarians do not eat gelatin. Gelatin is not vegetarian because it causes the death of the animal whereas as milk and eggs do not. There is a difference in being a vegetarian and not eating meat.

I knew they didn't have a vegan diet plan, but I'm not vegan. I am a vegetarian, however and expect more from a site that is supposed to have meal plans generated by nutritionists.

yeah... not eating meat and being a vegetarian are two different things. For those who want to be "vegetarian" obviously gelatin is a no-go, since it's pretty much straight up meat; or at least the process is from death of the animal. But so is milk...

I'm vegan and do not use the SP meal plan at all - although sometimes I check it out for meal ideas..

I think the best starting option is to simply replace the meal plan foods with things that within your realm of dietary comfort. Next in line would be to make your own meal plan from scratch, which is what I do. :) It's FUN!!

Hope you're enjoying SparkPeople!!

Huh, I never would have thought about that! I don't eat meat (including seafood), but I'm not a vegan so I don't worry about things like dairy, eggs, or gelatin.

Good point.
SP is on the whole not very veg*n friendly. There is no 'dairy free' option on the meal plan either.

I was quite shocked to see Yoplait make an appearance on my recommended plan this morning. I am clearly marked as a vegetarian and Yoplait Light is not vegetarian - neither is regular Yoplait.
Yoplait Light yogurt contains kosher gelatin. Regular gelatin is made by boiling the bones, skin and tendons of animals, usually cows or horses. Kosher gelatin, by comparsion, is made from beef skin or fish bones - needless to say, that is NOT vegetarian. As much as I enjoy this site, I was surprised to find such a mistake on a site that is supposed to be knowledgeable about diet.
