I had this so ingrained in me from the days when the US Postal Service was the only mail system, I have just kept up the policy on electronic media....

Yes indeed, those chain letters can get out of hand, especially when forwarded to someone who does not know anyone to forward it to. If I get such a letter that has a beautiful sentiment, I simply delete the part about forwarding it to anyone else before I send it to my friends. Even then, I only send the sentiments to people who send me like sentiments and who I know will appreciate it.
coach J en asked that we do not respond to chain letters, they clog the system.
This is just a friendly reminder to please not pass along "chain" type SparkMails or comments on your SparkPage. There's one going around right now about being a beautiful person and passing it along to 3 other people you know. It's nice in theory, but can easily get out of hand.
I'd ask that you spread the word to prevent things like this from continuing.
