Yes, I do need a fair amount of protein, I dont weigh it or anything but if I dont have sufficient I feel it. This is often when I'm travelling etc. If I am a bit low I start to crave high protein and I'll do something like have a whole block of tempeh or tofu and feel better. I know it is out of fashion but I do watch my protein fairly carefully and combine veg sources of protein for myself and for the teenagers. I think individual needs vary and I tend to do what works for me with a fairly wary eye on research etc.
Dr. Campbell who wrote "The China Study" sites research that proves that excess protein can not be stored and must be eliminated from the body. So it does no good to over eat protein and in fact can put stress on your kidneys.
Each person's protein needs are unique to them. I try to eat between 25 and 40 grams a day. I usually eat about 30. The world health organization recommended amount is between.45 to .8 grams per kg of 'ideal' body weight.
