Thyroid conditions - can donate if healthy and well

Looks like it's fine with my blood bank. My medication wasn't listed as a can not donate drug.

Thanks!

Hi Shannon! Here's what I found:

Armour Thyroid looks to be "T1, T2, T3, T4 and calcitonin...the hormone that mimics a human thyroid almost 100%" and it sounds like it is not compatible with blood donation. Of course it is absolutely more important to care for your health, and I hope your thyroid situation improves quickly!

Google search: ("Armour Thyroid" "blood donation")

Thanks so much for your question, and all the best to you!

Hi!

I signed up for this team a few weeks ago. I haven't donated blood yet this year. I did donate five or six times last year.

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism (low thyroid) started medication for it. Wanted to know if it's still ok to donate? The name of the medication is Armour Thyroid

It's ok!!! It's a big decision to donate blood. Not everyone can do it. Not everyone should do it. No one should ever feel pressured to give blood. That happened to me the very first time, and I backed out because of it! Giving blood is something you have to come to in your own way, and for your own reasons.

If you are able to, it is truly one of the things in life that we can do to help save our fellow beings. There is no synthetic replacement for blood, and it is always in short supply.

I have only been giving since 11/18/04, the day after my 32nd birthday. Until that day, I was scared about the process, and it took me two tries to finally participate. The first time, I chickened out. The second time, I went in with a friend to wait for him, and to get more comfortable with the whole thing. And then the next time, I was ready! Personally, it was a great decision for me. It might be for you, too!
