Saturday I'm running 10 Miles with RuninTexas.com at the Lighthouse Hill Ranch Trail Run.
Should be interesting if they got any of the rain we had last night!

It looks like this forum doesn't stay very busy? Anyone have any race plans? I completed 5 5k's and a few other charity walks last year and am registered for 2 races in the next few months.

January I am debating on the Women's Hot Cocoa 1/2 Marathon and 5k in San Antonio

I am doing my first 10k as a virtual race through willrunforbling

Feb. 1st, Color Run in Austin at the Expo Center

March 30th, The Biggest Loser runwalk 5k/half marathon. I am a team leader and so far, the others who said they would join my team haven't, so I am a team of 1. My group is open if anyone wants to join us. We may have several blind/low vision walkers with us.

I have a goal to complete 2 10k's and possibly a 1/2 marathon at the end of the year. I will have several 5k's sprinkled through the year.

The Colorado River Walkers Club is hosting an event on Sept 14th. Violet Crown is made up of the Central Austin neighborhoods of Crestview and Brentwood. These communities were established on dairy and cotton farmland in the 1940′s. Returning G.I.ís bought small 2 or 3 bedroom bungalows after WWII. The active community has kept many things unchanged.

The walk route will be along tree-shaded streets and participants will enjoy a step back in time. Of special interest is the 120 ft. long mural, ďWall of WelcomeĒ, which depicts local persons and places.

Start/Finish point and registration will be at Crestview United Methodist Church, 1300 Morrow Street; Austin TX.

START TIME:7:30-11:00 AM. Must be finished by 2:00 PM.

This is a Volksmarching event and you need to register to get a start card. We request a $3.00 donation to help defray the cost of hosting the event. There will be a 5K and 10K option.

Directions to Walk Location: Traveling north on IH35, take exit 239/240A. Go through light at St. Johnís, and turn left at the next light under elevated 183. *Stay on the service road about 1 mile, keeping to the right after crossing Georgian, and turn left or south on Lamar Blvd. Turn right on Morrow Street. Cross the railroad tracks and Grover St. Park in the church parking lot.

Traveling south on IH35, take exit 239/240A, turn right at the light and continue from * above.

If you are interested in collecting a stamp for doing this event there will be ďNew Walker PacketsĒ for sale at the start. They cost $5.00 but they contain three walk coupons inside worth $3.00 each so it is a bargain.

The Colorado River Walkers are hosting two walks/hikes this Saturday.

Balcones District Park is a 59 acre park in northwest Austin. Its features include a swimming pool, a play scape, and picnic areas. The park is located near the sites of Duval and Waters Park, small towns that were active in the late 1880′s but no longer exist.

One walk route will be almost completely on natural trails in the wooded area behind the park. Part of the route is flat but there will be sections that are rocky.

The other route goes under the MoPAC into the upscale shopping and residential complex called The Domain. This route will be entirely on paved surfaces. This route is big wheel stroller friendly if you have young children.

For both routes pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash. Water and bathrooms are available at the start/finish.

This is a sanctioned Volksmarching event. You are required to register at the start (anytime between 8 and 11am). Registration costs $3.00. You will carry a start card with you and at checkpoints your card will be marked.

This is not a speed event. You are encouraged to bring along your children and walk/talk and spend some time together enjoying the great outdoors.

When you finish (anytime before 3pm) you turn in your start card. If you are an official Volkssporter you will have an Event and/or Distance Record Book. When you turn in your start card you will receive a stamp in your record books.
If you do not as yet have an AVA record book, they will be for sale at the start/finish. Just ask for a new walkerís packet. The packet is $5.00 but it contains three coupons for free registration ($9.00 value) as well as both an Event and a Distance book.

Balcones District Park is at 12017 Amherst Dr. 78759.

Driving north on Loop 1/MoPac, take Duval exit. Turn left at the light, crossing over MoPac (this is now Duval) and turn right at the first signal. The park is on the right. Driving south on Loop 1/MoPac, take Parmer Lane exit. Turn right at the light onto Parmer Lane. The next light is Amherst. Turn left and the park will be about a mile away and on the left.

Everyone welcome to join us there!

There is a 10K walk in Johnson City at the Benini Galleries and Sculpture Ranch this Saturday Feb. 23rd. The walk route will pass many sculptures. This should be a good Volksmarch. What is a Volksmarch you may ask?

A Volksmarch is a non-competitive six mile (10 k) walk. It's not a pledge walk. ItĎs a fun activity you do with a club, your family, your pet, or all by yourself. Most people take 2 hours to do our 10K trails. Many events now have a shorter 5K trail that is perfect for beginners and should take only an hour to complete. Some people like to run or jog, others enjoy a leisurely pace and stop to sightsee, picnic, or even shop! You go at YOUR own pace, and you are always a winner at the end. Visit us online at www.ava.org and learn how you can start collecting a stamp in your own event books.

Slaughter Creek Walk this Saturday, Nov. 17th, start anytime between 8-11:30am; Finish by 2:30pm. Walk registration and start is at Mary Moore Searight Park (pavilion adjacent to parking lot). There are two options: A 5K or a 10K. Approx. 2/3's of the 5K is on asphalt. The remainder is on a dirt trail with tree roots and some rough gravely areas. The 10K includes the 5K and then follows a dirt equestrian trail (rarely used for that purpose) which has a few more tree root and gravely areas. The event will be held regardless of weather conditions. Pets are allowed, but must be on a leash and must be picked up after.

Directions to walk start at: 907 Slaughter Lane, Austin TX 78748. From I-35 North or South, take the Slaughter Lane exit (#227). Go west on Slaughter Lane for about 1.6 miles. Pass South1st St (light) then Simonetti, Yarsa and Palace (light) on the right. Immediately past Palace, at the next left turn lane, turn left into the Park entrance. The parking lot is about mile from the entrance.

Hope to see you there!

Free Fun in Austin posted today about Jaylie, a 5 year old Cedar Park little girl diagnosed with Brain Cancer. They are doing a benefit 5k August 13th. It is really an amazingly good cause and I doubt you'll make it through the information video without tearing up. I'll be there.
The 5k portion is an official 5k and is chip timed. Come support a great cause...

Hey SparkPeople!! On those non-race-day Saturdays, come on out to Brushy Creek.

Part of the Hill Country Church Sports Ministry (www.hcbc.com/sports), we meet at 7am. We've hit a few different parks on this trail so far, and for July we are starting at the "Kids Splash Zone" at Brushy Creek Lake Park.

We're encouraging each other to "go the extra mile" - and some people have exceeded their distance plans so far (Oh... I could never run more than 4 miles.... and they did SIX!!) We even work in a little testimonial and some cheering/celebrations before the run - Philippians 4:13 says we can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens us.

NO cost. NO pressure. "Private Message" me if you need more details.

Hope to see you at Brushy Creek or at a great event soon!

Oh that is awesome! I spent alot of time in the beginning behind a lady with a bright pink Rogue Running shirt. I was so excited to finish out under my goal of 45minutes. My last 5k (The Diva 5k in Pflugerville in March) I finished at 50 minutes. Today was 43:20. SO EXCITED. It was a great race and I will definitely be there next year!

I posted an upcoming hike around Lake Bastrop - May 7th

www.sparkamerica.com/city_resources_
de
tail.asp?resource=9770

For those just starting to exercise there is a 5K.

For those more fit there is a 10K (that's what I'll be doing)

For those really fit there is a 16K option.

Hope you can make a day trip to Bastrop and hike.

Being a Christian isn't about religion. It's about a relationship with the One who made us. I'm so thankful to be one of His.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

Do not ask the Lord to guide your footstep, unless you are willing to move your feet.

God grant me the serenity to accept those I cannot change, to change the one I can,
and the wisdom to know itís me.

If it fits into your schedule at all... The 5ks at the Texas School of the Deaf are well run and lots of fun. The campus is a great place to run and everyone is really great. Highly highly recommended!!!

I'll be at the Zooma 5k. My first 5k this year, and my first on my new diet. The scenery is amazing and the supportive crowd is borderline overwhelming!

Pick one and go! You won't regret it!

Active.com is also a good site, and usually has a few smaller races listed that Runtex doesn't include. But all in all, I usually peruse each site weekly to make sure I don't miss any fun races coming up! emoticon

Runtx is probably the best source for local races:

Hi Everyone,
I'd like to start training for a smaller race, like around four or five miles. Can anyone recommend which races would be a good fit? And what websites do you all visit to find out about upcoming events? Thanks so much and hope you all are having a good day! :o)

Did Run for the Bluebonnets in Bastrop on 2/27 ( I walk, don't run.) Next event is the BodyBurn Bun Run/Walk in Smithville 4/09 and the following week the ever lovely Zooma 5K at the Hyatt.

I really want to do Zooma Austin 5K in April. If I do it, it will be my second 5K. Anyone interested in doing this with me I think it'll be fun. http://races.zoomarun.com/austin/

Hi, Team Austin! Spring is in the air, and race season has begun. I thought I'd start a new discussion about upcoming races and events in the Austin area. Please post news about anything you think might be of interest to the team.

Let's start racking up those fitness points, and put Austin on the Spark fitness map!

GO, TEAM AUSTIN!!! YAY!

Pam

Never, never, never give up.
