Yesterday we had a power outage at work that extended a two mile radius!!! Everything BLACK and had to drive home w/ NO lights at streets or busy intersection! It looked like a monsoon!! So glad to have gotten home safe!!

emoticon Peanuts and MargooGnu; i also have been trying to make those breaks with certain items of clothing... i am confident that i'll eventually reach my goal weight, but i think you are Right, lots of the attachments i have to some clothing is not just memories of times when i wore them, but ideas of how i Think! i Will! feel when i wear them in the future; and
we all know how much we like something on the rack, but then when we actually put it on it may not fit us either physically Or~! emotionally...

i think i will take the advice of one of you here who've suggested taking advantage of the times when i get to a point where i feel like i'm Done! with some items; i find that they do come and go as you've described.

I have stuff from my 20's! (I'm 64 :-) I did designate the bottom drawer in my dresser for stuff I just can't give away "yet" and I don't wear any dresses or fancy/hanging stuff anymore now I'm retired so my closet space is not a problem anymore. My trick is to revisit the clothes often and catch myself in a mood where I'm willing to throw out or give up stuff. How you feel about things comes and goes? At some point you'll catch yourself in an "oh, heck, who am I kidding?" mood or, what I started with, I sorted the clothes into 3 sizes and the "small" I gave away, only keeping the "mediums" and "large" (I'm extra extra large :-) Eventually some of the styles change and you realize you are holding on to something not so much because you like it as an item of clothing you want to wear, but as a memory of who you were in it or what it reminds you of. When that happens I do a journal entry and let go.

“She took a step and didn't want to take any more, but she did.” ~Markus Zusak

PeanutsMom, I say donate! Unless you are strapped for money. All my "smaller" clothes were so outdated so I got rid of them. Besides, what a wonderful reward for yourself after you lose weight!

First of all, no problems in changing the topic, there is none here, we are all just "waffling" emoticon

On the clothes front, I think that unless there is a special item of clothing that you can't get anymore or it holds special significance, I'd donate the lot.

Half the fun of losing weight is being able to buy and wear the new stuff that is available. There are so many fun things to wear these days. The plus side of donating is that someone who can't afford new clothes is able to get some at a reasonable price.

I enjoy tea and coffee, even belong to a team for each here on sp.

I hope you can forgive me for changing the topic but I need some advice please. I'm going through my clothes and getting rid of (donating) things I no longer wear. I've come across quite a few items that are currently to small for me. Once I reach my goal weight I will fit them. Should I hold on to them for when I do or get rid of them and go shopping. I don't have much space in my small apartment and have less money to go shopping. I've read articles that say you should get rid of smaller stuff cuz it can be frustrating and be counterproductive to reaching goals. What say you? Keep or donate? What reasons are you considering?

I've never had a taste for coffee, I used to have the odd cup when I was working, usually when I was hungry. I like to drink tea and I love water.

It's such a good feeling to do something no matter how small it is. You're right, there's always someone worse of than you.

My handyman has done such a great job around the house, he's been worth every penny I've paid so far. I've got a few more things to get done then I'll be able to whiz around on the ride on mower without having to dodge all sorts of things on the ground.

Debby - sorry to hear your daughter won't be able to share Christmas / birthday with you. That was a great idea about the cake though.

I always donate to homeless shelter every Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. There is always someone in the world worse off than you that could use a helping hand. Wish I could do more this year than I will be able to, but every little bit helps.

It will be a shame you can't celebrate your daughters birthday at home with you.

Our Christmas will be just myself and my brothers, I always invite my oldest friend but as she lives in Queensland (a couple of states away) she never seems to get the time to get down here.

I did our donations to charity the other day. We don't usually have presents here as we have everything we really need, so we always donate to the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, Red Cross etc over the Christmas break. There is a lady her in Victoria who is suffering badly with cancer all through her body. She just had a baby delivered by Cesarean so she can try to get some more treatment. There is a fund being set up to help her and her fiancé and baby should she pass away. I was thinking of donating a $100 or so to the fund, I can't imagine what it would be like needing treatment or help and not being able to get it.

I'm with you Jules, not very religious but love the Christmas holiday. My oldest DD was born on Christmas, so we always celebrated on Christmas Eve and had birthday cake on Christmas Day. Unfortunately she is in Austin and wont be home for Christmas. emoticon So no birthday cake this year. But I did order one from a bakery down there when we were there last month. They will have it ready by the 23rd! DD's BF said he would pick it up. I miss her this time of year especially

I'm more than ignorant with Jewish traditions, mind you I'm not up to snuff with a lot of Christian traditions either.

Christmas is a family time for me, we aren't particularly religious in our house, so no mass etc for us.

So what do you do for the kids for Hanukkah? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Jewish traditions. Do they do a Christmas tree or any Christmas kinda decorations?

"one little loaf makes a perfect size dessert for 2" or for one very hungry person. Who ever goes by the instructed serving sizes?

I have a huge roll of refrigerated gingerbread dough. I think I'm going to bake that in a few days, take a lot of them to Thanksgiving at the son/daughter-in-laws and grandkids and leave them there. I know it's more a Christmas thing and that family is Jewish but who's counting?

I found a great way to make holiday cakes. Instead of making it in a regular cake pan, I use little loaf pans. 12 little loaves make a cake recipe. So we can have one and give the rest away! The kids love them as one little loaf makes a perfect size dissert for 2

So many recipes these days are for 4 or more people and sometimes they are not easy to divide up, so it makes sense to freeze the remainder for another day. There are so many containers available these days to freeze stuff in and the microwave works wonders with reheating.

I know it sounds obvious but I usually pack up my leftover meals, you know lasagne, pasta with sauce, veggies and freeze them. It's amazing how many times I go to these frozen tidbits when I either can't be bothered cooking or someone doesn't want what I'm serving.

Good idea on the little baggies! I'll have to try that too. Will save space in the freezer.

Yep the microwave is a Godsend in the kitchen. I have little baggies of soup in the freezer that I pull out whenever I feel like soup

Noreen, I make my own in the crock pot. Freeze most of it, makes about 5 meals. I use low sodium vegetable broth instead of chicken stock, very lean chicken breasts and brown rice. Super easy! Especially when we eat it the second and third times. Thank goodness for microwaves!

I love soups but they are so high in sodium. I'm going to have to start making my own.

I think that sometimes it depends on what sort of day you are having. The weather and other things can totally screw up lots of things, especially food plans.

I know when I come home tired from whatever my big ideas on what I'm going to have for dinner fly out the window and I end up with something else entirely.

At least you stopped at 2,000. I had a day I hit 2,106 about 2 weeks ago emoticon
Not a banner day for me. But managed to get back on track the next day, and that is the important part. emoticon

The gods are definitely watching out for me? Under my current plan I do not ever want to go over 2000 calories? Last night after I'd turned off my computer apparently my appetite did not turn off and I was eating like there's no today (tomorrow at that time). So, I just added what I ate, looked at the total and it came to EXACTLY 2000. emoticon

We have so many unique animals here in Australia. I love the fruit bats, although they do tend to carry a few nasty diseases.

I love our birds, we have some beautiful parrots over here, every morning I'm woken up with the cries of cockatoos, magpies and kookaburras.

Jules, you have quite a variety of animals down there! The weirdest thing we saw were the big bats hanging in a tree!

Well Jules, they say animals are good judge of character. I'd take the abundance of them showing up as a compliment. emoticon emoticon

I love parrots of all sizes, they are so smart!! I used to have a galah that used to talk its head off, it coughed, laughed, whistled and said lots of words. I also had a Rainbow lorikeet who was a sweetie unless she was laying on eggs, then she had a stinker of a temper. Both of those birds along with the Cockatoo just flew in here and stayed like most of our other animals.

I swear there's an sign that only animals can see that says "come to the Dickins house" they'll look after you!!

We've had everything from plain old dogs and cats, to guinea pigs, ferrets, cows, chooks (chickens for you Americans!!) geese, dairy goats, Angora goats as well as lovebirds and rabbits.

I don't think my cats would appreciate it if I got a bird? I let my goldfish "free" when we moved 25-30 years ago; I was going to have to keep him in the basement which was "finished" but I didn't go down there much except to do laundry and the idea of having a fish tank I did not enjoy and where "Dee Dee" would not be appreciated was a dumb idea. My previous cat had tried a couple times unsuccessfully to get to it when I had two fish but I think Dee Dee killed the other fish and a huge tank was not my idea of a homey place for one goldfish either. My husband won it at the County fair for me, tossing ping pong balls, quarter a ball:

www.carnivalsavers.com/fish_bowl_tos
s_
carnival_game.html

He managed to win it in under $3.00 I think. However, he was not experienced with goldfish and warned me he could not stand a pump because of their hum (very sensitive engineer's ears) but I just looked at him like he was crazy, goldfish not needing pumps or elaborate equipment? But his sons had had goldfish and they'd all died so when I told him he got to name the fish, he named it "Dee Dee" only it was "D.D." which stood for "Dead Duck". However, the fish refused to die in the 2-3 years we had it and finally we took it to "Allen Pond" and let it go. Less than 30 minutes later, fishing in Allen Pond, I caught a fish almost exactly the same size Dee Dee had been (slightly larger) and we did some rolling around on the ground laughing after I let the poor caught fish go.

But then there was my hamster? When I cleaned his cage I'd put him in a roomy plastic guinea pig ball and let him wander the house. I had no trouble finding him again as the cats thought this was a fun game too so I just had to look for the cats. Except when the hamster in his ball would go on the offensive and then they'd back off tout de suite!
