I got a bike!!!

I bought a Magna 26 inch mountain bike from a friend who won it in a contest and is unable to ride a bicycle. I paid her nearly full price for it ($150). It is a discount bike - off the rack. But since I am leaving in August, and I just wanted something to ride for the summer, I thought it was a good place to start. It has rear suspension, an easily adjustable (or interchangeable if I don't find it comfortable) saddle, and 21 speed gears. A friend of mine does a lot of mountain biking and she convinced me to give it a shot, so having a bike I can take off roads will be nice. Then of course, when I get to France, I'll make a decision about what kind of bike to buy to commute back and forth to work. Thanks for all your advice guys!!!

Or you can always get a nice one here, and then find a beater in France to get around on, and not have to worry about the shipping at all. Find out how much it would cost to ship the bike (including packaging) and think about whether you can just get something to ride over there for that price, and sell before you leave.

I just checked my local Craigslist and saw a great variety of used bikes in different price ranges. Maybe that will at least get you some miles in like the other poster said.

At our bike shop, we do carry a small selection of used bikes. Have you considered a slightly used bike to get some miles on your legs, then acquiring a bike once you get to France?

You will probably have a greater variety and get a better deal in France. Riding is much more common in Europe.

I still haven't got a bike. I am going to France at the end of August and I am thinking of just waiting till I get to France to buy one, but that means going the whole summer without a bike, and I was really looking forward to riding. I may be able to get a used one for the summer. My father said he'd buy me the bike for graduation and then send it to me in France, but it is a lot of money to spend on shipping. Quite a pickle really. I can always still go to spinning over the summer, but who wants to go to spinning in lieu of really bicycling? Like I said, quite the pickle.
