Has anyone done this? It looks like one SPECIAL event!
I'm not sure that the link to this Pedal America newsletter will work, but here's the article and a link to the Montreal event:
Psyching-up for My Trip To A Bike-Crazed City
When it comes to bicycling, I often hear the question: "If you build it, will they come?"
Well if you ask a Montrealer, the answer is a resounding "Oui!"
Of course, that's not good enough for me; I always have to check it out for myself! And, gee, will I have a lot to cover.
In 1995 the Government of Quebec partnered with Velo Quebec, the local nonprofit group committed to turning
Montreal into a world-class cycling destination. Together, they invested more than 88 million dollars over
10-years to build a 4,000 kilometer bike way called the Route
Verte. It now extends 5,000 kilometers and lures 10's of thousands of recreational cyclists a year.
Plus, I'm psyched! to top off National Bicycle Month at the 30th annual Montreal Bike Fest, now called Go Bike Montreal Festival. More than 32,000 riders are expected to attend. The May 29th - June 1st weekend promises an explosive celebration of bicycling!
The festivities kick off Friday, at 8 p.m. with The Tour la Nuit, a colorful parade of 17,000 cyclists pedaling 20 kilometers (about 12.5 miles) through the city. The route is set against a backdrop of Montreal's ambient city lights, a colorful sunset, and the Saint Lawrence River.
On Sunday, I'll try my french among the thousands of riders who will take to 50 kilometers of car-free streets. Event coordinators call it a "rallying cry for action and celebration!"
Follow Pedal America for real-time updates on Facebook and Twitter; plus, I'll have highlights and pics in our June Newsletter. If it's easier, just book yourself a plane ticket or rack your bikes on the car and head up to Montreal! I'll find us a microbrewery where we can sit and swap stories."
