My DH & I did make our forbidden streets ride yesterday. We rode from the northern boundary of Long Beach to the ocean: 10 miles. The street is 2 or more lanes for most of the ride but then narrows down to one lane (each way) when you are about three miles from the ocean. It's usually a very busy street both ways so the cars cannot pass you. But yesterday morning we only had to pull over 2 times to let the cars pass us. It was great fun to ride on our forbidden street.

I lived in LA for 11 years and I know what you mean about the streets being empty on New Years day. If I was still in LA, I would ride through downtown LA :-) The city would be totally empty!

I am running a 5K that day, so I'll have to pass this time!!

Have fun!

I'm such a chicken about riding in traffic, I usually am strictly off-roads....except those precious days when traffic is so light AND weather cooperates! When those things coincide, I enjoy a ride on the asphalt and it always feels like I'm riding on a forbidden road!

Hmm...a few years ago the weather was mild enough for a New Years day ride...would LOVE it to occur yet again! :-)

Most "forbidden" routes would be either due to horrendous hills, blind turns 'round which traffic flies and little or no shoulders existed. If we venture over the border into Pennsylvania where the fracking trucks are ripping up the roads and few shoulders exist...I'm told one truly takes great chances with one's life cycling 'round there anymore.

Have to consider what we might choose for such a ride...cool idea, thx for sharing!

My DH and I have a New Years day tradition: we take a bike ride that includes streets that we NEVER ride because they are too dangerous. In Los Angeles that means they have a high speed limit and no bike lanes. We go out early when there is no traffic and enjoy the ride.

This year we are planning on riding south on Cherry Ave from North Long Beach to the ocean. The last half is one lane, each way and is always busy with thru traffic since there are no other streets nearby that provide a straight route between north and south Long Beach.

How about joining my DH and I and plan your New Years day forbidden streets bike ride? share your route and why it's a forbidden street!
