Apps to help you take a scenic bike ride:
With the weather getting nicer each and every day, you might consider going on a nice long bike ride to take in some beautiful outdoor scenery. All you need to do is take one look at this thrilling video to get motivated.
Once you get in gear, these apps will help you to map your route, as well as provide you with the tools you need to succeed!
Map My Ride+ ($3, iOS) - If you're like most people, you have come to rely quite heavily on your GPS unit for directions. This app will not only give you GPS directions for when you are riding a bike, but will also count your calories, calculate your speed, allow you to track your nutrition and diet habits, and will sync with your heart rate with a Bluetooth.
Cyclemeter ($5, iOS) - Whether you are biking, walking, running or skiing, this app will provide you with the ability to track everything included in your workout - from distance and speed to heart rate.
B.iCycle + ($10, iOS; $4, Android) - B.iCycle can help you plan your route, provide you with GPS directions, post your progress to Facebook and Twitter, and calculate your speed, distance and burned calories.
On top of that, B.iCycle also boasts a social community of thousands of people that continually map out new routes and trails around the entire world.
Strava Cycling (Free, iOS, Android) - Cycling is a great exercise activity, but it's often a solitary endeavor. Not with this app! It turns cycling into a social activity, as you can compare your achievements to your friends' and other cyclists.
SpotCycle (Free, iOS, Android) - Did you know that you can rent a bike just as easily as you can rent a car? Scattered throughout the country are tons of bike docks and stations. At these stations, you can rent a bike and pedal away without much fuss.
When you want to take this type of trip, check out SpotCycle. It will tell you the 10 bike stations nearest to you.
