I was in the same boat. I was born and raised in Michigan but never been to Mackinac Island. A few years ago I decided I needed to experience it and my parents and in-laws also came with us. That year we stayed several days at the Main Street Inn. Staying on island is very expensive. I've been back a few times but those times I stayed in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace and took the ferry there and back every day. In addition to no cars there are also no insects on the island. Considering mosquitos are almost the state bird of Michigan that is a nice break. There are no large animals either. Well, sometimes a deer will decide to swim the 8 miles from the mainland but since there isn't enough vegetation to support them they are caught and returned so they won't starve. You can rent a horse and carriage or a cruiser bike. It's a pretty cool vacation.
