I'd be thrilled if I could even keep up with the 16 mph riders. I'm working on riding faster (I'd like to move up to the B group), but my default speed seems to be in the 12-14 mph (CC) group. If it's a hot and humid day, I even have trouble keeping up with the CCs. The cycling club has offered these tips--more time in the saddle, more spinning and less cranking, and continue riding with those just slightly faster.

Pace lines scare me--I had a spill that ended with a broken collarbone. I'll tag on to the end of a line, but I steer clear of being in the middle. The best time I had in a pace line was at the Hancock Hundred in Ohio last year. It was flat, flat, flat and a pace line came flying by me and I took off after them. At one point I was going 21 mph--but I couldn't keep up with them for long. But it sure was fun.

Yep, been there, done that too...after a while realizing: ain't no WAY I"m going to keep up with these folks! Then I settle into a groove that works for me. Which is all right too. It's all good.

Thanks Don. I think its fun to jump into a paceline for a little while when they come flying by you. Will work on pushing my limits a little more to get better.

Your speed is your speed...and it is fine the way it is. If you want to go faster yet I think it's just a matter of increased time in the saddle pushing yourself and experimenting with speed. Intervals might be helpful.

I think it's more helpful to find riders who "fit" in with your style of riding...not an easy task, but put yourself out there in a variety of situations and you'll find them. The simpatico of riding with someone whose style is complementary to your own is a wonderful, wonderful experience!

There is no inferior or superior...ANY time in the saddle is an AWESOME THING! :-)

Is there a secret to getting fast enough to keep up with some of the swifter moving groups? I was just out for a ride today along the riverbed and had a group of three guys hand me my ass Mark Cavendish style! I had an avg. speed of about 20 and could not keep up very long. It was unreal the speed these guys were moving! Slow crank turning, ass in the saddle, they were moving along like a bullet train. I feel inferior. :-(

We've been very courteous, fortunate and safe on our club rides. Very few mishaps. I've only dabbled with drafting...pretty cool, but tricky stuff, one needs to keep one's eyes glued to the draftee and road!

We can always use tips to keep those group rides safer. My husband is about to quit after messing up his shoulder last Fall. This happened on a ride with folks that ride together all the time without new people dropping in too often. We have actually asked one biking friend to not come to this ride anymore. He has caused two large crashes on our rides because of his inattentiveness. I'm thinking we need to space ourselves and not try and get the maximum draft...we are out there for the exercise!

There were some good group riding tips in todays Tech Talk @ Road Bike Rider:

www.roadbikerider.com/top

Perhaps we can start a thread with tips we can all toss into the hopper? :-)
