I'd be thrilled if I could even keep up with the 16 mph riders. I'm working on riding faster (I'd like to move up to the B group), but my default speed seems to be in the 12-14 mph (CC) group. If it's a hot and humid day, I even have trouble keeping up with the CCs. The cycling club has offered these tips--more time in the saddle, more spinning and less cranking, and continue riding with those just slightly faster.
Pace lines scare me--I had a spill that ended with a broken collarbone. I'll tag on to the end of a line, but I steer clear of being in the middle. The best time I had in a pace line was at the Hancock Hundred in Ohio last year. It was flat, flat, flat and a pace line came flying by me and I took off after them. At one point I was going 21 mph--but I couldn't keep up with them for long. But it sure was fun.
