Of course, I'm basically smack in the middle of where, according to this article, the best Ohio ride is as well as the best Michigan ride. I'm approximately 4 hours from the Michigan one and 3.5 hours from the Ohio one... For that matter, I'm about 4.5 hours from the one in Indiana. That's alright though, as I have plenty of local places to explore on my bike. :)

This is a SUPER ride for a beginner to organized rides! Highly recommended and generally runs around the same time each year, mid-June-ish.

Wish I could do this...I'm about 3 - 3 1/2 hours west of there. I'll have to plan ahead for next year. I've not done any organized rides yet (just started riding last year).

Thanks for the list--I'm trying to find good possible routes here in Lincoln (for when it's warm enough!), and this gave me a good starter point.

I have never finished a workout and thought to myself, "Now, THAT was a waste of time!"

I should have added that the ferry ride itself is beautiful. I recommend visitors ride the inter-island ferry as a walk-on. It's the cheapest "cruise" you'll ever take. Take the ferry that stops at all four islands. Oh, and walk-ons only pay to ride westbound. The ferry back to Anacortes is free.

Here's a link to the Washington State Ferry System's web page with more info about the San Juan Islands ferry routes: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/info_desk/

Thanks for posting the article. I think there was an article about the trail in Adventure Cycling within the past 2 years.

The Katy Trail is on my list of must-do rides. I'm planning a cross country ride in Spring 2015 and may work it in on that trip. If it happens, I'll drop a note to the team--I'd love to have some Sparkers for company.

Isn't it the way that most things worth doing have a price tag or meter attached...?

I agree that the San Juan Islands are achingly beautiful. What the article doesn't mention is that it'll cost you $14 to walk onto the ferry with your bicycle (those are the winter rates - they go up in the summer). Although I'm originally from the wet side of the Cascade Curtain, I've grown very fond of riding in Eastern & Central Washington. (Especially when the ever-present wind is at my back!)

Great story. The next in line wants to hike the Mark Twain National Forest. I live on the northern edge of the Forest and the Tour of Missouri used to run through that area. Before I was much into biking there used to be an annual "ride to the river" through parts of the Forest but I never participated. Now that I've been doing more riding they don't seem to do it any more.

Thanks for the list. I'm not surprised to see that the recommended ride here in MO is the Katy Trail. Lots of great stretches along the Missouri River. The closest access point for me is about an hour away but the best stretch is about 2 hours away. It seems silly to drive somewhere to ride my bike so I'll stick with the back roads around town.

I looked up the ride for Ohio and it's a bit north from where I live but I could easily drive there. The ride features covered bridges. There is a covered bridge tour in the fall that is near my house that actually involved a lot more hill climbing that I like to do. Nice to know there is an option for a day trip though for some new scenes!

What a neat list! I'm new to cycling and hoping to do my first century in 2013, so I don't have anything to add for Texas. But, I hope to get out there and see some new sites in the next few months!

My pick would be the Stewart Forest Preserve in Orange County, New York. It has different types and levels of trails (mountain, cross-country, dirt roads, etc.) for all abilities.

Haven't had the opportunity to ride their pick for New York, certainly the Adirondacks is "on the list!" It's sorta fun to check out terrain elsewhere and see what they pick. Maybe folks want to add what THEIR pick might be...? :-)
