I spoke with a few of our bike club members who were in the amateur race yesterday (5 club members, including one in his 70's who finished EIGHTH!) about how it was riding in it and while it's a challenge, it doesn't seem TOO far out of my reach. Might consider it in the future. 16 laps round a mile long loop round several city blocks with an uphill stretch that I'm told gets a little TALLER each time they go 'round! :-)

One fellow from the club held an overall 20 mph pace for the race which is definitely more than I could sustain at present, but with a little more work and training I could see myself within striking range of that.

Plus the tight quarters one sees among the pro racers really doesn't exist for the amateurs except perhaps for the first stretch at the beginning.

Just raced local XC races/time trials, no road races/crits, though they look fun. May try my hand at some local cyclocross races in the future.

I used to do criteriums in the 80's and they were brutal. LOTS of crashes! Finally decided to stick with road races, hill climbs, and time trials.
Now I don't race anything. Maybe that's why I gained weight? emoticon

Back in the day most of my races were criteriums. I preferred road races but there were many more crits than RRs.
Sometimes they did get physical. There often was some leaning on inside riders around turns. A few times another rider would try to squeeze in and when I couldn't make enough room so I pushed them in a hay bale so we wouldn't both crash. I've also had to hop over bikes or competitors who crashed in front of me. I've never seen anything like "NASCAR on 2 wheels" though.
My worst course was at Brookhaven College in Dallas. I crashed 4 out of the 6 times I raced there. I last time I went it was raining and considering that I usually couldn't finish the race in the dry I didn't like the prospects of riding it wet so I didn't even line up.
This was when I was in my 20's racing cat. III/IV. There were few crashes in Masters bike racing. I keep saying that someday I'll race Masters but I just can't put together the time to train that much.

This is definitely NOT my kind of cycling! Rounding city corners in a swarm of cyclists at high speeds where one hiccup can send the whole lot crashing to the ground? No way! But it IS breathtaking to watch. Will bike into town to catch it tomorrow.

Does anyone out there do this kind of cycling?
