I just LOVED this editorial David Byrne wrote about the new bike-share program coming to New York City this summer!
This Is How We Ride
(the following are just a few exerpts, I highly recommend reading it all!)
"Iíve used a bike to get around New York for decades. Thereís an exhilaration you get from self-propelled transportation ó skateboarding, in-line skating and walking as well as biking; New York has good public transportation, but you just donít get the kind of rush Iím talking about on a bus or subway train. I got hooked on biking because itís a pleasure, not because biking lowers my carbon footprint, improves my health or brings me into contact with different parts of the city and new adventures. But it does all these things, too ó and sometimes makes us a little self-satisfied for it; still, the reward is emotional gratification, which trumps reason, as it often does."
He makes many terrific points about the ways in which other parts of the globe are way ahead of us by incorporating cycling into their everyday lifestyle. We in the USA have much to learn, but it's exciting to see at least some of the baby steps that are being taken!
