This morning on my bike ride, I saw a lady in a pick up truck pull up to a stop sign and wait for me to pass her. I looked her in the eye -- as I always do to make sure drivers see me -- and not only did she look back, she smiled and waved and gave me a thumbs up. I nodded and smiled back and kept riding.
I couldn't figure out for several minutes why that made me feel so good. Then I realized it's because drivers never do that. Rarely do they see me at all, much less acknowledge my presence in any way. I have become so defensive that I ride with one hand resting on my brake handle almost all the time. Cars and vans are bad. SUVs are worse. And pick up trucks are the absolute worst yet. Motorcycles aren't so bad, maybe because they have similar problems. So when this lady -- in a pick up truck -- acknowledged and actually affirmed my presence on the road, it gave me a nice mental boost for the rest of my ride.
Restores my faith in humanity a little!
