I ended up having bike related confidence issues after my wreck last year. After 3 months, I got back on my mountain bike. It was scary, yet I did it anyway. Still, I'm glad I did it, despite finding a new way to continue cycling.

I purchased a Catrike 700. There are several different styles of trike available from a couple American manufacturers. Much less risk of falling than riding a traditional diamond frame bike.

My first ride today was amazing!

Giving an update. I am up and back at work full swing. It has been about 10 months since my surgery on my ankle. I have 8 screws and a plate. However, my ankle still doesn't have full rotation. Ortho and PT said at this point exercising and time is the only thing I can do now that will loosen my ankle to full rotation. It may never be 100% but I can come very close. This year I have been spinning, swimming and doing the elliptical. I don't trust myself on a bike yet so it may be awhile before I ride again.

Two weeks ago, I started boot camp at a private gym. It is way more intense than at my gym. It's like a cross between the insanity workout and biggest loser. I still have to modify some exercises to make them low impact as I can't jump and land on my ankle without serious pain. I started losing some weight and feeling stronger.

Two weeks ago, I walk 3 miles and it was good. I was really worried I couldn't do the distance but my ankle held up. Last week Friday, I ran 1.2 miles for the first time. It was really sloooooww, really sloooooow but I didn't stop. I had to run through the initial pain but that only lasted about 2 minutes. Before, I use to stop as soon as I felt pain but glad I pushed thru this time only to realize that it was gone within 2 minutes and didn't hurt afterwards.

Just want to give you guys an update.

Lovey

Hope you are back on your feet and in the saddle soon. You'll come back stronger than ever after this extended rest.

Update. I am a month post surgery. My broken ankle is healing great. I am still on clutches and resting at home. Won't be attempting to walk for a couple more weeks yet but this week I start putting weight on my foot. HURTS!

Glad I hadn't registered for any summer races yet. My bike crash was on Mothers Day. I was suppose to my race schedule that week so I can register.

The only race I am registered for is the 10K part of the Marine Corp Mararathon &10K on halloween weekend. Hopefully i can still at least walk it.

Lovey,
Praying that you heal, surgery goes well. Praise the Lord for the church ladies, with their love and meals. My crash and surgery resulted in loving church ladies with dinners, last year.
You'll be on the bike, but take the time to heal and do whatever the MD tells you to do, to further your recovery. emoticon

Airport security usually isn't a problem for orthopedic hardware. My dad had double knee replacement and even all that metal it doesn't concern TSA. He has a card from his doctor just in case there is trouble but he has never needed it.
It sounds like you should get the hardware taken out. Companies are working on bioabsorbance hardware but the first clinical trials have had problems so they may need more development.

I pray your surgery goes well and that you're back up and moving around soon. An extended stay on the couch is no fun, but we all need a break now and then. I'm thankful you weren't hurt worse.

Ouch! That's no good. I crashed a few years ago and busted my shoulder pretty bad but managed to get back out on the bike later that summer. Keep your spirits up and you'll be back in the swing of things before you know it! emoticon

Sorry to hear that. I broke my ankle (lower leg) Feb. 2011. My brake was a spiral fracture. I broke the fibula in two places and it required surgery. I have 8 screws and a plate. Over all I have healed well but have a few lingering issues with minor irritation.

The plate in my leg is on the outside and there isn't much flesh there. So I can feel the plate and screws. Anything tight over the area, crossing my leg etc. is what causes most of the issues.

I have also had some minor pain and swelling recently as I have increased activity. The doctor says It is adhesion's that I am breaking down and therefore a good thing. The doctor gave me a topical pain reliever and some advise on how to reduce the swelling. The good news is that this is subsiding as I have continued to ride.

Never the less I am considering having it removed this next fall/winter. You might consider discussing that with your surgeon if you have any concerns.

Oh, I don't know if you travel much. I do some with my job. I was worried about airport security having metal in my leg. The good news is that I have never had any problems with the TSA due to the hardware. (been through metal detector and full body scanners)

Anyway that has been my experience so far, YMMV. I hope your experience is at least as good.

My mother's day 10 mile ride started really well. Then at mile 8, I crashed. My left ankle swelled immediately. I hobbled to my car using my bike as a crutch. I loaded my bike and called my hubby. I drove the 2 miles home and just parked in front of my house. My dear hubby did everything after that. Took me to the hospital. I have a broken ankle! The hospital put a temporary cast until I see an ortho before putting on the permanent cast.

One of the two orhtos the hospital referred me to couldn't see me til Thursday and i didn't like the other one. I went to the ortho i used when we trained for Frederick Half Marathon 2 years ago. She was able to squeeze me in yesterday. My husband liked her because she gave me all my options, pros and cons and explained everything in details.

DIAGNOSIS: My ankle is broken in 2 places, inside and outside, with some floating bone. Recovery is the same with or without surgery but its a matter of how it will heal. Without surgery it will heal and in the short term it will feel fine. As I get more active walking and running, it will most likely start to cause issue because of loose bone and my gait being off. Surgery with the use of screws and a plate will put my ankle back the way it was before the accident.

I am scheduled for surgery on Friday.

In the meantime, my husband is working from home this week to stay with me. The ladies at church are cooking meals for us this week and bringing it by. My neighbors are picking up and dropping off my boys as needed.

I will keep you updated from my couch.
