Travel has helped define the person I am today. My bicycle journeys have been overwhelmingly positive experiences. But not always. Bad things can and do happen on the road.
I had an experience early in my travels that was a turning point. I was either going to go on, or return home and perhaps never travel again. When it first happened, I thought it was something I should try and forget. To put it out of my mind. Twenty years later I shared the incident in a conversation with my editor at Adventure Cyclist magazine. He told me if I wrote it, he'd publish it. It appeared in the Oct/Nov issue of the magazine.
Steve Scher, host of Weekday on KUOW, read the column and asked if I'd like to read it on air.

"Feel free to share it with anyone who may want to listen/read it. I wish I had read something similar after the experience happened twenty years ago. At the time, I felt very alone and confused. But I'm fortunate I made the decision I did."
