I've been really lucky with my biking and jogging. I've been chased by a few dogs, but nothing too bad.

My brother on the other hand is a recreational rider with a cruising bike (no gears, flat wheels etc, classic looking). My bro is a little over 30, 4'11", weighs under 100 pounds and looks like he is 12. His legs don't work all that great (has to use his hand to lift the right one if it falls off the pedal, can't walk very fast has to use a lamp post or tree to remount the bike etc) but for riding he does fine. While at college a few years ago he was riding off campus and some middle schoolish aged punks decided they wanted to take this classic looking bike from the little boy. The pulled next to him and started trying to kick it out from under him. Note, if both legs get knocked off the pedals he is toast because he can't put them both back on. He eventually managed to lose them in a shopping center area (lots of cars).

As the little bigger sister this TICKS me off so much. I so wanted to crack some heads. GRR! I don't think it ever got reported -boo! Bro doesn't like to admit in those situations he is more helpless than most and the cops can't do anything about it.

Man it makes me mad just thinking about it, GRR!

On a funny note, the police use to pull him over all the time for truancy. While at college. Once they put him bike in the trunk and drove him back to campus for his room mate to ID since they didn't believe his IDs (drivers, school and military ids).

Silly cops.

Jim,

How about a nice lightweight carbon fiber baton with a small carbide ball on the end, spring loaded. Aim for the tail light, really easy to spot.

Here is another good one. Driver pulls up along side you on the right if you are turning left and starts yelling. You belong there. If the behavior is aggressive or treating, window is open, reach in and quickly wrap the shoulder strap around his neck and just hang your weight on it. He will be out cold in about 20 seconds. Distance is your best defense. Ride away.

Some years back I got a gift from the mother-in-law to use to break a window if you ever fall through the ice or go into a lake or river with your car.. I think I may have a better use for it. It is an orange plastic handle with a metal pointed tip on it. Apparently if you hit your window hard enough it should shatter it.

I was told by an officer if you hit the lower right corner of the side window it will shatter it nicely. Never have had the opportunity to try it out; but now with the tool and the near mishap I may bring it with me on all my bike rides.

This way when the officer ask me a description of the vehicle I can tell him the color make and model and oh by the way it will have a shattered side window as well. LOL

Helmets turn into a lethal weapon if need be. Why do you think I ride with a multisport one when I mountain bike?

Commute to work was a little dangerous. Two people battling out road rage coming towards me, one cut the other one off...I headed into a shopping center and waited for them to pass.

A school bus van went to turn right but she was smart enough to look back at me and I waved her through. Thanks bus driver! Someone with a brain!

A woman cut me off. The typical ' they see me I'm going before I get stuck behind a bicycle' move.

I spotted a grate with a chunk out of it. If I rode over it my tire would have been shredded.

Three cars got a little too close. Sometimes they do that if you cram up on the white line with no where to go.

Shaved 5 minutes off of my time. Oh man, I was feeling it.

Got to work and realized I'm so pooped because I was battling with a 10-15 mph headwind.

The only way out is through...

I have a solution.

We need to develop tactical and self defense training course for cyclists.

I've seen some nasty stuff over my many years. There are things that work but you need training to spot them and execute.

We need to think outside the box and take our rights back.

I just remembered another dangerous situation we had on a club ride. We were riding along a country road, minding our own business, and a car full of teens approached us at 50 mph. As they passed, they pitched water balloons out at us. Now, imagine a 50 mph water balloon missile headed toward you!! One woman was struck in the hand and it ripped open her skin. Luckily, no one crashed!

I asked my sons to keep their ears open around school for anyone bragging about the prank, but we never found out who they were.

Little pukes!

...and then in the middle of everything, you realize you're alive right now, and the time to live is right now!

Dog in the road: doesn't have to be coming after you...just in your way in general.

We were riding the Flume Trail in Tahoe and were descending that long wonderful descent that you earned by climbing for a while. I think I remember looking at my computer and it was around 20 mph (dirt) and I lightly applying the brakes "just in case". Well just in case was three golden retrievers. Running. Happily. Had I not been aware of "just in case" I would of ran over all three of them and probably broke my neck. Of course, the owner was yelling at US because we were riding. I reminded her that a few years ago a trail group I belong to built another trail for walkers and hikers and dogs so they didn't have to deal with the bikes. Her response? "Why do I need to walk there when I want to walk here?" Ugh.

The reason I said it would put the hurt on someone is a while ago there was a lawsuit by someone that was robbing someone and they pepper sprayed them. Guess what? they had a violent reaction and turned around suing the person that sprayed. I don't remember the outcome but I know if I'm unlocking the clip on it, then I'm going to make damn sure they weirdo isn't asking for directions or telling me I have nice bike lol. I would rather be sued than the opposite.

The head on thing is horrible on a bike or in a car. Is it me or are people losing it? I wish they would outlaw cellphones while driving in MA.

In MA it is illegal to carry pepperspray for 'humans'. For animals? It's legal. Mine is for bears. I figure it would work on bears, dogs, weirdos, etc. Best to size it for the 'biggest' animal lol. No bears technically here and I'm more afraid of weirdos than bears for the record...

The only way out is through...

I guess I was more surprised that it was a head on attack.

I might carry pepper spray with me as well and a grease pen and paper.

The pepper spray reminds me of a ride I was on 2 summers ago. There was 6 of us in a pace line and we were clipping along pretty good 22-26 mph. All of a sudden I realized the pace line was fanning out. There was a dog in the road .... here is the kicker the married couple owners were there as well walking along carrying the leash and never bothered to call the dog back.

I told the guys that that is the time when I wished I had a can of pepper spray. They said it wasn't the dog's fault and I replied what makes you think I would have used it on the dog? They retorted and said you wouldn't have sprayed the owners would you? I replied without any hestitation or remorse.

Great ideas. Not sure of the position of our police force. I will have to ask around.

Now you are on to something. Find them and let and exercise your rights.

We need a FB page and website dedicated to drivers that are rude to cyclists.

"I would be afraid it would really put the hurt on someone."

I would use it without hesitation. Does it work in people doing crack and meth? I ride down the bike trail at night to go to the gym. Before the bugs are out it's a haven for drugs and gangs. With a 20 oz can I can hook up a fogger.

"Sometimes you never know who that person is on a bike, eh?" Like you, MMA fighter!

So I made it back from commuting to/from work in one piece. One near miss as a woman was looking the other way and knowing this I actually stopped until she looked my way. This could be a mistake as she might take it as you stopping but you know what? I would rather have a stumbled start where she cut me off than get ran over doing 14 mph.

Funny thing is, when I got back to my car to drive 10 miles back home (dangerous 10 miles), I am leaving the lot and a gal rolls right through a stop sign and then gives me the finger (I had no stop sign) and proceeds to scream at me. I get up next to her and use some realllll choice words (but no spike in blood pressure due to the nice ride home!) and keep telling her "I had no stop sign.." and she keeps saying "I stopped" so I just left. You can't fix stupid.

BARRONVC- I think you can get it from REI. It's kind of large, about the size of a 20 oz coke bottle. I would only use it if my life depended on it (I carry it mostly in the woods), I would be afraid it would really put the hurt on someone. I use it for bear aversion in Tahoe with my dog. It will persuade any black bear to turn and run. So I figure, it's probably better than a gun in the forest...

Your sprint one reminds me of a long time ago, someone drove by me and their kids in the back of their SUV shot me with a water pumper gun. You want to talk about dangerous! I was so startled I almost fell over, so I went after them. I had never sprinted that fast in my life. I caught up to them as they were making a turn and followed them back to their beach cottage. A few of my bike friends tp'ed their house a month later.

And lastly, one of the best stories EVER: A woman screamed at me to ride on the sidewalk and get off the road. I remember the plate and the car because it was a personalized plate. Two months later, a woman at the Y approached me as one of my friends told her I have a gluten free bakery. She was desperate and wanted cupcakes and a cake for her son. She was real pushy. Then as we were walking out to our cars, I saw her get in...yup...the get off the sidewalk minivan. I politely declined her business.

Sometimes you never know who that person is on a bike, eh?

The only way out is through...

I explained that we had to brake to avoid him, and he actually appologized and shook my hand.

You can forgive people acknowledge you. He will know and not do it again. You have helped me make a point that you must speak up. If you are silent drivers will not acknowledge you have the right to share the road. Nice work.

Got T-boned October of 2008. Girl ran a stop sign and swore she didn't see me. As big as I am. Tried to tuck and roll as I went through the air, but did more of a head plant. I really got my money's worth out of that helmet. I have had a few loud mouths drive by, but nothing like the beer bottles or such. I have been known to hammer to catch said loud mouth at the next light and invite him to a conversation on the topic. Haven't had any takers.

I was on a group ride once when a fuel truck made a left turn in front of us causing us to hit the brakes hard. I stayed back and called him out. I explained that we had to brake to avoid him, and he actually appologized and shook my hand.

I've only had one collision with a car. Very minor as car unexpectedly made a right turn into a driveway right in front of me. I caught it in time to turn too, but not enough so got bonked to the ground. The driver was duly mortified and offered to take me to the ER, but I was MORE mortified and just eager to get out of there and made my way to the fitness center to shower up. Just minor scrapes & bumps.

Today was my first commute to work. Made it here. No crazies to report.

I was hit twice. Not hard, I won't even consider them being 'hit'. At the same intersection. Car pulled out in front of me both times, it was practically a year apart. First time I was able to lock up the brakes enough to not T bone the car and just hit it with my foot. The second time I tacoed the wheel into the car and dented the car with my shoe (Sette mtn biking shoe).

This is why when I commute I have disc brakes and usually don't clip in unless it's a lonngggg stretch of open road.

I carry Counterassault which is pepper spray for bears. It's a giant can, and it's legal in MA to carry it because hey, it's for animals right? Probably similar to Halt but a heck more powerful and enough to stop a grizzly.

I have had numerous friends get hit over the years. A friend of a friend just this past week, and then his wife got hit two weeks prior. Her hit was from behind by the mirror of a car with an elderly woman driving. Cop stopped, looked at her, the mirror and said he saw nothing wrong?! Then the woman went to the station and got the same story. I don't get it, she got hit? Maybe because she didn't have her arm hanging off or laying in the middle of the road....just be careful.

As for the getting mad part, I usually get really mad but then I realize, at some point, these people make their own miserable futures...

Ok, this is what you use Halt for. It's a pepper spray for dogs that the mailmen use. It works on dogs and crazies. Distance is your best defense. Spray in his eyes and run the other way. Don't be a victim.

I know the best way to be safe is to ride in numbers, carry cell phones with vid and camera, get a Lic plate #, and never get a driver a pass. Always call on them.

Next, check with your local news media (TV Radio) and see if you can get a story about it or organized something about bike/vehicle safety that utilizes local law enforcement, local bike shops and clubs. People don't know the laws and they change all the time, what you think you know may have changed.

I am soooo glad you are OK! That freaked me out just reading it! You are very brave to go back on the same road again!

I haven't had any bad experiences yet, but the guys I ride with have had a few. I have seriously considered carrying my gun. (Not that I plan on shooting at cars!) I have a concealed carry permit for Ohio. Being female, I am much more worried about riding alone in my area.

Jim,

We have had a quick spring/summer???? Cars are not looking for cyclists and yes! They are also mindless butt heads or aggressive. Call your local law enforcement and see what kind of position they take on cyclists. If I get a license plate number I call officials and file a report. Sometimes it's good and sometimes the officer will blow me off. I gone over their heads and did get results.

One really good experience, lady leaves a bar after work and two of us are riding single file and a group of cyclists (about 40 or 50) are coming towards us. The lady passed the group and came straight towards us laying on the horn the entire time, we had to go off the road. I had a lot of witnesses, it happened 2 weeks in a row. I had to meet the officer in that county to make a complaint. He gave her a reaming and it never happened again. We knew her car and the bar so the cyclists were looking for her, also knew where she lived.

On the other hand, two cyclists got killed near me in the past two years. Both drivers of the vehicle were at fault and they only got $250 ticket. Those officers hate cyclists and we have been told we don't belong on the road.

I did have the pickup truck thing happen on several Sunday's. Finally I got a lic number. Seems campers with a pick up box full of drunks tossed beer bottles out at me, they drove slowly and call me names. Got the cell phone out and took a few pics, got the lic number. After passing me they turned into a campground. One way in, same way out. I documented the time and called the sheriff. Showed them the glass and one bottle didn't break. They took that for prints, got the pic off my phone and found the group in a minutes. Matched the bottles they were drinking and still in the box of the truck, took all of them out and towed the truck. Sometimes things work out. You will never know unless you try.

Carry Halt! Hold your road if possible, keep a marker paper, grease pen is good it can write on anything.

How about a Facebook page for cyclists regarding bad drivers.

Glad you lived to tell the tale. Who knows why people do what they do?

Here's a story I just heard last week. A friend of mine was riding with two other men. A pick up truck came up beside one of the guys, threw a drink cup at him and pulled in front of him to weave back and forth to mess with him. My friend said that the cyclist pulled out his pistol and fired a few shots through the tailgate of the pickup. You can bet that those drivers might think twice before messing with spandex again!

(I don't condone firing at motorists, but I thought it was a funny story. Obviously, I live in the south, where redneck is a religion!)

...and then in the middle of everything, you realize you're alive right now, and the time to live is right now!

Thanks goodness you're safe! It would think it would be worse seeing it coming like that.

I was gently bumped, thank goodness, while walking across the street inside the crosswalk! I wasn't injured, just knocked over, but I was terrified that they would keep going and run over me.
Drivers here are too aggressive and not very safe or aware of either pedestrians or bikes.

Never know why some people do what they do!
I was in a big group ride this Saturday and a car decides to pass us and another car was coming the opposite direction. The car passing then squeezes into us. Freaking unbelievable, if he waited only another 3-5 seconds to let the opposite car come through he would have been able to pass safely. I wish this billboard was on every road:

“Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”-Lance Armstrong

I was out on the road riding to take advantage of this Wisconsin winter day of high 70's. I had a short time to ride so I took my out and back trek.

Well on the way back, I had a car that crossed over the double yellow center line to within 3 feet of me for a head on crash of which I know I would have lost. I moved over as far as I could ..... I looked to see why this person would be moving over to my side and oblivious that I was even there; there was no reason for coming over into my lane.

I came close to bailing out in the ditch. By the time I had my wits collected it was too late to get a plate number.

I know I should blow this off ... but I do know why I am allowing this to affect me for some reason???

I did go out the next day and took the exact same route so that I would not be mystified to do the same route again.

I am hoping the moron was texting and not having a road cyclist rage revenge?

I almost wished I had a water bottle filled with rocks and a note that says you just hit a cyclist ..... just to scare them a little and maybe they would stay off of their phone if that was the reason for the crossover into my lane?
