Great ride! I use apple sauce and baby food in those squeeze pouches myself. It beats all those processed ones that I have found.
I did spin class last year 2-3 times a week and I still had a hard time when I started riding. This year I took off and didn't notice a difference other than gaining weight. So next winter I'll spin regardless if I can get out and ride or not!!
Congrats on leading the ride. I wouldn't be too concerned about the type of fuel, but rather the engine. Get yourself in shape and fuel will then come to be important. For me, rides beyond 2 hours means a swallow of honey every hour there after for instant energy.
You reminded me that I need to bring fruit and cheese with me as my neighborhood rides get longer. I have been riding around my house and it is hillier than where I used to ride but since I started with one block I just grabbed a water bottle and left. Thanks for the reminder that as I ride longer I will need to refuel.

I led a bicycle club ride and 3 other club members joined me. I was the slowest, weakest one! They did spinning classes all winter! We had some moderate hills but big headwinds and I really pooped out. Realized I needed to bring more/better fuel for tough rides.
