BRANDIL21 I've been riding for many years I can tell you that the hardest mental block for me was between 25-50. Once I broke that threshold getting to 80-100 was a piece of cake.

It seems like it take you getting to 50 to figure out what works and doesn't work for you and how to pace yourself.

sometimes it is a push to get them to ride but I know I am very lucky. We have extremly active kids who just like to be outside playing.

I wish I had a family like that. They all think I am nuts, everytime I request something cycling related. They go along, so I shouldn't complain. My sister gets it, only because she has a horse, so her focus is riding in the OTHER kind of saddle, and getting more *STUFF* for that!

Family riding is great! My sister and I are the weak ones in my family. Mom is hardcore and my brother's not far behind her. Dad's less so, but he rides with mom all the time, so it rubs off, I suppose.

Christmas was comical this year - practically every gift was cycling related!

I bet it does. My husband and I ride well together and it is a fun time for us to spend together. Our kids also are strong riders and so (during nice weather) we get to enjoy long rides as a family.

Hee hee - I can't wait to get to ride and train with MY mom this summer at the beach. We live 400 miles apart, so we never get to ride together, but we frequently call each other after rides and to encourage each other. I miss her.

I approach my long rides the same way I approach my long runs. 3-4 days a week I ride inside or out for an hour - twice I do speed work (like a Spinerval or an iCycle). On the weekends, I do a long ride and add a bit of mileage each week. If you're riding 25 miles now - try adding 2-3 miles a week on to your long ride and before you know it you'll be riding those century rides. Do know that you really only have to train for 80% of your distance - as someone else said. The momentum and thrill of the event will get you through the rest. Good luck! I think it's great you're doing this!

Training/riding with your mom is always a great idea!

50 miles - piece of cake!

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow".

The only way to build a base for miles is to get out there and pedal, and...build miles! If you can do 75% of your distance before the event, and feel good at the end, you'll make it!

I would just pace yourself and bring "good" snacks to boost you on the way. I may shoot for 40-50 this weekend but that is indoor miles. It is just too cold to bike outside right now!

Find a team/shop to ride with. Most bike shops have social rides a couple times a week. Just start calling around.

I'm training for an MS150. I ride with a corporate team each Saturday for 12 weeks. This helps considerably. I also go on charity rides on Sundays.

You'll be amazed at how fast you can build up milage!

So far the furthest I have ridden is about 25 miles. Well April 15 I am going to ride 50 miles. Hopefully by this same ride next year I will be riding the Century!

Any tips on training for this?
