Gwen and I are blessed (or cursed, depending on one's outlook!) with gorgeous territory here in upstate NY. The hills can certainly give one a run for the money! :-)

LadyGwen, Too funny! Unfortunately, I wish I COULD see Big Ben! Around here is flat, flat, flat...but just a plain old neighborhood! And, my 'loop' is less than 2 miles! Boring!

IMSMILEY88,

You just gave me an idea! Training escort to hang back and make sure you are safe.

The more open the area the better you can see. Distance is your best defense.

I think it'd be a lot easier to ride alone if I had someplace beautiful and 'safe' to ride! I am going to try out the bike & hike path we use for our long runs on Saturdays. On Saturdays, it is busy enough that you aren't by yourself, but not too busy where you're having to dodge people. It's not 'beautiful', but it is a lot better than going round & round my neighborhood!

Best wishes trying to find a group...if that's what you want! I agree that checking with your local bike shops is a great place to start!

happy riding!

Try bike shops, they will know the clubs in the area. Ask questions and find out club names. Get on the website and see where they ride and what type of club they are.

Also local health clubs might have rides. Your LBS might have resources too.

@IMSMILEY - yup, I did this ride, and every ride, alone. I dont know a single person locally who is into riding and/or can keep my pace, so I just end up riding alone all the time. Most of my rides are on well traveled bike paths, so i see plenty of folks, just dont ever have anybody with me along for the ride.

Sounds like a bike club is the better option for me. Any ideas on where I can find some? Googling bike clubs in my area seems to not be working so well.

Or sometimes the costs of joining are extremely low, as in my case: $30 for a lifetime membership!

If the cost of the ride can be made better if you find a local bike club that helps in these types of rides. Usually you can ride free if you donate time.

I see you're already looking ahead! emoticon

Around here we have a handful of rides you just pay for ($25 or so) from Jan-Apr while getting ready for the MS150. Also, the bike groups do weekly rides...maybe you could try that? Did you do this ride alone? Are you comfortable going farther alone? My 20 miler was just around & around my neighborhood &I can NOT see myself going another mile farther doing that. BORING!!! I can't wait to try some longer rides starting in January!

I agree it's tough to find those great rides without the fund-raising aspect. I struggle with having to hold my hand out to others for donations so have managed to find some rides which don't have that requirement. The NYC ride I just completed (check my latest blog) had other shorter rides available also. No fund-raising! I put the link to it in my blog.

Now that i've beat this goal, i suppose I need to set a new one. I see a whole slew of 35 mile rides for various things (events), but they all seem to come with a hefty fundraising requirement.

Is that always the case or are there freebies from time to time?

Hey folks. So back when I started riding in June, I never thought I'd be able to ride 20 miles, let alone 30. But, against my better judgement of a goal of 15 miles and the emphasis on dreaming big by you all on this spark team, I set a goal to ride the East Bay Bike Path in Rhode Island, a 29 mile ride up and down.

Sunday, I set out to give it a try, and I succeeded.

I blogged about it, and added in a bunch of pictures, so rather than ramble about it here, i'll simply drop a link to the blog entry.

Super pumped!
