Yesterday's ride home after work had a 20 mph head-wind the whole way, no matter which direction I was going! (and it was none too warm, either...about 26 F w/o windchill)...it's a pretty flat route, but I was still in a pretty low gear!

If I can't be a good example, then I'll just have to be a horrible warning. ~Catherine Aird

I've had several days while commuting in the winter with 30mph winds w/ ~45mph gusts in freezing temps. Somewhat discouraging to be pushing hard in my mountain bike's granny gear on the flats, but still great training. :-)

I think the worst wind could be a cross wind on a country road. Nothing like constantly fighting to keep you bike upright because the wind is blowing you over.

About a week and a half ago I rode out to my destination into a headwind and looked forward to heading back with the wind at my back and it didn't happen. It wasn't quite directly in my face, it was sort of half way between a side and head wind, but it definately shifted and I got to "enjoy" riding into wind both going and coming.

Fun stuff.

Bikecommuter, I can so relate!!! We seem to get a head wind both ways during out Saturday morning rides to the beach.

I don't know about wind each way, although there are times when I think I am riding into the wind but when I turn around the wind is even stronger. But I have ridden a trail that seemed to be uphill each way...no kidding.

Hey ABIKER! I have missed everyone terribly but I have been busy trying to balance everything in my life. Like right now I need to be working on a paper and then doing a simulation for another paper. Ug.

No story to tell here. I just want someone to explain to me how I can do an out and back ride, and have a headwind each way emoticon

I don't know that I have anything to add to this converation, but had to stop by and say hi JuJubug! It's been a long time. Hope to see more of you around.

It's true the wind is the training partner you love to hate and is relentless, but we really know it just blows emoticon ...ba dum bum...Thank you I'll be here all week. Remember to tip your waiter.

Last Friday, when I attempted to ride my bike home from work, I encounter high winds and wind gusts. The cross winds blew me across the bike path unto the dirt a few times and the head winds were so strong that stopped my forward progress a few times. After 16 miles of this struggle, I said FORGET IT! Iím taking the train home.

My worst wind experience was also at my first triathlon--the weather was better than it was for dimensions, though! No rain, upper 60's and a wind that was the remnants of Hurricane Ivan. The storm was out to sea, but the race was along the road that parraleled the Atlantic Ocean. But really, after I survived the ocean swim, anything seemed easy...

In general, riding on the eastern shore of Maryland, I have had interesting wind experiences. Like a shifting wind. So somehow, you start into a headwind, make you turn and have a crosswind that almost knocks you over. Then, before your next turn, the wind shifts and instead of the tailwind you've been waiting for, you have another crosswind or headwind! I have ridden a 25 mile loop with NO TAILWIND. I don't know how that is possible, but I'll watch the flags on people's lawns, and I promise it's true.

I know I haven't been on much lately but anyone who knows me knows how much I dislike the wind! The worst I can think of was when it was 15 degrees out and we had 35 mph gusts. Riding in the country, into the wind, slowing down while riding down hill....it was awful. But as on spark member has driven into my brain: wind is a great training tool! In fact, I should have gone for a ride today because it wasn't too cold out but it was windy. Hopefully this weekend. I have a 25 mile ride coming up at the beginning of Feb and I haven't gotten set for it at all. :-)

My very first triathlon it was 58 degrees outside, driving rain, and 14 mph gusts off the ocean. Yeah, it was pretty brutal but I loved it! Having said that I'd hate to bike in that kind of weather on a daily basis.

What is the strongest wind you have ever had against you while cycling?

Today, I rode into a 14 mph wind that was sustaining gusts over 22 mph (according to our weather service). This is right off the Caribbean sea and into my face, other than some palm trees there was nothing to slow it down.

As such I only managed to ride 9.7 miles in an hour when I normally do 12 in that time and a couple of times I was blown to the point where I had to grip hard to keep from going over. lol

Now when it was at my back I hit my all time fastest speed at 22.4 MPH, when in my face however, it was between 7 and 10 mph.

Very, very tough ride.

Got any wind stories to tell?
