Thanks for all of the tips! I ended up seeing a doctor today as I thought I might need stitches on that forearm (I said elbow, but it is really the arm). And, it was really swollen this morning - it was swollen immediately yesterday, too.

Well, the bad news...I waited too late to get stitches! That's a good thing to learn, though. You MUST get the stitches within a few hours!!!

The good news...I didn't NEED stitches. Whew! And, the advice given here was right on...no hydrogen peroxide (though I'd already done that once last night & they said it was OK). Now, I'm supposed to ice it 3-4 times per day & put on antibiotic cream 3-4 times per day. I'm allowed to go back to full activity, as pain allows (which is actually quite painless unless you touch it!), but I'm supposed to change the dressing afterwards & make sure it doesn't get too sweaty.

As far as my fall...we were in the parking lot & we were all gathering to exit & start our ride. The riders in front of me stopped. I unclipped my right foot & started to stop completely... then realized I hadn't signaled to those behind me & I could cause a wreck! I think I looked over my left shoulder...and down I went on my left side. Ouch! And, it's amazing how torn up you can get when you are practically stopped! And, YES, I was wearing my helmet!!! I even remember hitting the ground & then kind of feeling my helmet touch down...very grateful for helmets!!! (Always wear them, right!?)

Thanks again for all of the tips & concern! I'll be back out running tomorrow, though I might just take today off. And, I'll be back on my bike in a few days!!! (I think! emoticon )

Everyone crashes when starting clipless. Always unclip at least one foot well before the actual stop point. I see alot of people crash trying to time lights or stop signs. You'll get the hang of it before you know it.

Even after you master the clip-less pedals; If you don't crash at least once a year, you're not riding enough miles :)

You should learn to treat road rash. If you haven't had a tetnus shot in 10 years (or aren't sure) get one. You should gently clean the abrasion; Shur-clens is the best. You definitely shouldn't scrub it out with a brush! That is what I was taught to do decades ago and can be excruciating and while unnecessary can worsen the injury. Don't use hydrogen peroxide unless you need to dissolve a crust of dried blood/pus/dead skin. Hydrogen peroxide not only removes dead tissue but attacks living tissue as well so only use it sparingly and if necessary. Then you want to keep it moist and covered. A surgical bandage slathered with neo-sporin works well but a dressing like Tegaderm or Duoderm is better. Every cyclist should have a first aid kit to deal with things like road rash.
I used to deal with my own road rash except one time. My team used to do pursuit races on the top floor of a parking garage. I was racing against a really cocky obnoxious junior on my team. The only reason I could put up with him was for all of his big talk I still beat him like a drum on every training ride. In the parking garage pursuit he was catching up with me. If he caught me I'd never hear the end of it! I started to go faster and brake less for turns and had to keep upping the pace until I finally lost it and laid my bike down. This parking garage had textured pavement so I lost far more skin than usual. To add insult to injury I shredded and expensive pair of shorts and a brand new jersey. After things like this it doesn't start to hurt right away. I started laughing hysterically. The junior asked me why I was laughing and I replied that my road rash didn't hurt yet but it would soon so in a little while I wouldn't have anything to laugh at. While I had been taking care of my own road rash I never lost that much skin so I went to the ER for this one.

Thanks, Minna. And, I should have said forearm. Thankfully my actual elbow is fine!

Oh no... I am so sorry. I have also had accidents due to the clipless, I guess it just goes with the territory. Hope you heal quickly and the elbow is nothing serious.

Unfortunately, I had a wreck tonight. Went out for my 1st group ride clipless. Didn't even make it out of the parking lot and I had a wreck. Most of it is minor, but I'm a little concerned about my elbow. Kind of deep & wide & swollen. Also, some white stuff in it, though I think it is probably rolled up skin. I might be headed to the doctor in the morning. :-(

I also wouldn't add spinning to my mileage... But it sure burns calories! Good for you!

Congrats on going clipless!

I generally don't add Spinning miles...only minutes logged under "Indoor Cycling (including Spinning, group cycling)."

Haven't been Spinning in a while...since the outdoors have been an option, :-)

But yes, WHAT a WORKOUT!

Doubt I'll ever bother with clips...too much of a klutz!

I did a Spin class today. First time in about 8 years....yeah! I LOVED it! What a workout, too! And the music, the variety, the challenge...FUN!

So, I track mileage here on SP. How do you add your Spinning miles? It seems a little 'cheating' to add it as full value. But, then again...

Oh, AND I got my clipless pedals & shoes yesterday! I've been so scared to do that! I took my bike out this morning for less than a mile while I just practiced clipping & unclipping. I'm getting the hang of it!
