I'm wondering, since the vehicles were media-related, if the media coverage was greater than in years past, perhaps reflecting a greater public interest in the Tour? Which would be a good thing, however OBVIOUSLY better planning should be implemented in carrying out the media coverage!
You're not going to inspire many newbies to get out and jump onto their bikes after witnessing a collision like THAT!

This accident was unacceptable!!!!! The car should have slammed on his brakes ..... I do not care if he would have been rear ended or not!!!! As far as other cyclists involved if he would have slammed his brakes on .... there were none. It was the lead group of 5 with the main peloton about 4-5 mins. away. This may have taken an additional two riders out of the race if they can not heal up today to start the tour on Tues. again. The guy need stitches!!! Hopefully he will be able to continue on as competitvely as before?
Yes there has been a lot of crashes this year but is it because of the race set up for additional points throughout the stage? Course route choice? Lack of focus? Retaliations? Increase of aggressive riding styles? Impatientness?
It will be interest to hear what the competitors have to say about the increase in accidents on the interviews with them on their rest day.

Ouch! That actually is a tough spot. He was trying to dodge a tree and had little choice. To have slammed on his brakes he'd have been rear-ended by the motorcycle and several other cyclists - very messy.
