Eating alone will not keep a man well; he must alsoo take exercise. For food and exercise, while possessing opposite qualities, yet work together to produce health... and it is necessary, as it appears, to discern the power of various exercises, both natural exercises and artificial, to know which of them tends to increase the flesh and which to lessen it; and not only this, but also to proportion exercise to bulk of food, to the constitution of the patient, to the age of the individual..." AASHTO PROVIDES $5,000 FOR WORK ON U.S. BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM
Thanks in large part to $1,000 matching challenges from AdventureCORPS, TeamEstrogen.com, and Stan's No Tubes, the "Build It. Bike It. Be a Part of It." campaign--aimed at raising funds for the emerging U.S. Bicycle Route System--which ended yesterday, was wildly successful. While the final total is still being calculated (so far, it looks like we've
raised over $29,000!), the campaign was given a big boost in its last full week when the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) provided $5,000 to Adventure Cycling to support its technical work on the network.

A primary partner in the USBRS, AASHTO also recently produced a short video, "Biking in America, 2011," that explores some of the work being done by state departments of transportation nationwide to add hundreds of miles of bike and pedestrian lanes to the infrastructure. The video also explores innovative programs being implemented to promote biking and walking.

CAPITOL REPORT
The political weather has also been stormy in Washington, DC, especially
for transportation issues. Congress is working on a new multi-year
federal transportation bill that will set policy and funding levels
for investments in all forms of transportation. There have been
concerns that dedicated investment in biking and walking would be
completely dropped (after 20 years of enormous progress). Adventure
Cycling, as part of the national coalition America Bikes, asked our
members in California and Montana to contact Senators Barbara Boxer
and Max Baucus, who are leaders in negotiating this legislation, to
keep biking and walking investment in the bill. The good news is that
the many cyclists who contacted the Senators appeared to have an impact;
Senator Boxer announced this week her forecast that biking and walking
would be in the bill. If you'd like to contact these Senators or learn
more, check out Adventure Cycling's blog post:

I am a big believer in doing everything we can to let our lawmakers know how important the issue of having roadways that are friendly to pedestrians and cyclists is to myself and many others.
