and even then they are usually quite inaccurate on the high side.

I pretty much ignore them.

I used the iMapmyride app today....IT WORKED!! It saved my workout to my online account complete with speed, distance, calories burned and time. It even mapped out my ride which was super cool. I was able to finally show my husband the whole trail. It may not be a Garmin but it's free and it works pretty well.

I use a Garmin 205. It does what I need it to do. I can track my speed, time, distance, etc. I like it because I can use it while running or walking as well.

x2 for imapmyride. I use it with the iphone.
Mapquest also has a free GPS app for the iPhone that works just like the srand alone units.

I love my Garmin Edge... it records my heart rate, interfaces with Google maps (important if you ride off road where you can't go by car... also will back track so you don't get lost in the woods), tracks speed and pace, elevation, % of grade, and many other features that I don't use much.
I have mounts on both road bikes and mountain bikes so I just clip it on.

My wife found an unbelievable deal on an Edge 800 which she gave me for my bday. I love it. It replaced a forerunner 305 which had gps too, but no maps.

I have an iphone and the app i use for my biking is great. It's called cyclemeter. It's the only app i was willing to pay $4.99 for. It takes you mile for mile on your route and records your mph, the climb in feet, your overall time, the route, the whole ball of wax. Then when you get home it's loaded onto your computer. I like to try a route in May and then see if or how much i have improved later in the season.

I'm not sure what kind of information you are looking for but I found a FREE app on my blackberry from imapmyride. The weather was a bit too cloudy for me to give it a try this morning but the reviews are cool. I use the site on my computer so thought I'd try it since it is free. If you have a different smart phone check under the fitness apps. You might get lucky.

I have an Edge 500 and it works great. I like to see as much data as possible after the ride and the "500" provides plenty of that, in addition to giving me feedback from my power meter. I need all the help that I can get.

Although my son got me an inexpensive Garmin Nuvi, which is really for the car, but portable enough that I could stash it in my pannier I have to admit to not bothering...FWIW.

My wife has a garmin on her bike - and she loves it. I have one on my wrist because I tend to ride the same routes and I just want the stats.

Hi,

Do any of you use a GPS unit ? I'm considering one to replace the need for map and compass when on tour or exploring on my bike.

Why do nice guy's never win ?
