Hey team... You are motivating me to get out there and ride again. It's been 4 years... I was diagnosed with a balance disorder and basically gave up the idea of ever riding again. Welll...I've learned that's not the case. I now have a recumbent trike (Catrike) and am ready to get started again. I used to try to ride 100 miles a week and now can hardly ride 5. Recumbent bikes are very different... But I'm excited about getting back out there and starting at 5 and moving my way up. My mile goals will be small - but better than nothing, right???

I can't...but GOD can!

ok, I'm glad we have some where to log this stuff on here, it forced me to actually sit down and log my miles

My stats for 2007,

Last year's season ended in June, after my last double, then I went up to Yosemite for 4 months to do heat and altitude training, but it really wasn't that hot up there this last summer, in the 90's and 100's, not like 2006, the 2006 summer was hot...

During my 6 month 2007 season January - June

"Training"
4 times a week
40 miles with 5,000ft of climbing each ride

1 time a week
100 miles with 7,000ft of climbing

6,240 total training miles ridden dring my 6 month season

288,000ft climbed during this training

RACE'S COMPLETED
5 double centuries
1000 miles
60,000ft climbed

2007 race season total's training & races combined

7,240 miles
348,000ft climbed
"During my six month season"

So I don't know how many more recovery ride miles I rode after this, I didn't really log my miles up in Yosemite, I just rode =)I had planned on doing a couple more doubles this last fall but came home and got lazy, my body was spent so to speak, and it was hard adjusting back to the polluted San Francisco Bay Area air...but I plan to do 7 doubles this year, then the year after that I plan on doing the California Triple Crown Stage Race, so I can earn that jersey too

It's been a great year for me, met most of my goals, maybe a couple of pounds over but it's the holiday's. Hope everyone had a good year, and hopes for an even better one next year.
I'm starting out 2008 with a 45 mile club ride up Highway 1, just short of Bid Sur.
Keep pedeling and stay safe.

Got to do a club ride today! 40-ish miles including the ride up from the house to finish the year. Beautiful day. Windy as all get out, but nice overall. Many thanks to my friends that shared the workload into the wind!!!

46 miles and change... I *meant* to do a club ride, but they left at 9 instead of 10, and I wasn't quite ready to roll by 9 after 16 hours in the car yesterday. Had one of the best solo rides I've had all year, though. I even remembered to warm up and cool down!!!

Hope to get out on the tandem when Amanda gets back from her club ride shortly.

I rode Wednesday with my daughter. It was our first ride together. She is breaking in her new bike. We plotted a safe route she could use to ride to college and rode it together. I had planned to get in several miles that day but the 20 miles we rode was a lot more fulfilling than any 50-mile ride. My daughter is now hooked on riding! She can now get exercise and save gas money.

Hi folks.

My computer power supply died and left me without a way to get onto Spark. I am back in business now.

I have my Nokia studded tires on, which has been a real life saver this winter.

After that big snowfall a week ago, I was out on the roads before my street got plowed out. It was easier to bike than walk. We left the car in a snow drift until Wednesday.

So for all of you who have put away the bikes till spring, think about putting studded tires and lights and more reflexite on your Christmas list next year!

KJ...more power to you and you can be thankful to the S CA weather that you might be able to do these miles. We are under the white stuff here. I went to a 6:30am Egg Nog breakfast with my a.m. commuter group. Two of the guys rode in sub 20 degree weather (with CHristmas lights on). One carrying the nog, rum, and treat bags. My street is covered in ice! They just said not to turn sharply...hohoho

275.21 miles left to reach my 2007 cycling goal of 3000 miles. I’m sure glad I have taken a few days off work. I need them to get this mileage in before the 1st of January! I have 6 riding days left this year. Hmmm. 275.21 divided by 6 equals 45.868 miles per ride. That’s very doable. Of course my DH might have to finish my Christmas shopping and my kids may have to cook dinner, but I’m sure they’ll support me in reaching my goal! ;-)

I did 66 minutes / 30km on the trainer tonight. This is the most exciting my rides will be until the end of February I'm afraid. :)

Well I finally got out on my bike for a chilly 40d ride of 11.5 miles. Not far but it felt great. I haven't set up with the trainer because I've been running, swimming and lifting. My biking buddies are out on a night ride tonight but they've got better cold weather gear than I.

Hi everyone! Nice to see people are still riding outdoors SOMEwhere... I've been doing two rides on the trainer every weekend. I try to do the TT DVD once and a recovery/endurance ride once. I finalyl started back running now that my hip etc is better. Taking it VERY slow - after 3 weeks, I'm up to 3.5km, 2 min run, 1 min walk. Step by step....

Going to get my gait analyzed next week. Should be interesting...

I word to the wise! Be careful if you use a bike on a trainer with a mat underneath it! I had a wrinkle in the mat and didn't realize it and my rear tire burned a hole through my mat!

Exercise caution :-P It's cold and snowy here in NE Ohio and my trainer has been seeing alot of action lately. I love my Kurt Kinetic! My Ipod makes it actually kinda fun!

26 glorious miles in the cool sunshine of December in North Carolina. Came *this* close to making the big 1.5 mile climb on today's loop without having to stop to catch my breath. And I was practicing my out of saddle climbing technique...

Tomorrow will be a long ride. It may take a while, but it's on my list of things I must do this year, and the time has come. I think the traffic will be much easier tomorrow than on Saturday.

Had a spectacular ride today. Temps were in the mid 40's. Fought with some 30+ mph gusts for a bit, but mostly hid in the lee of the mountains. Caught a couple of sharp crosswind gusts during an early descent, so I kept speeds down to the low 30's on the rest of them as a means of self preservation.

It's been great riding in the mountains of my youth the last few days and not feeling beaten!

Snow yesterday and today, so no riding; but temps back to 10°C by mid-week so snow's gonna go away and there will more riding in the coming week.

Had a couple of nice rides Thursday and Friday; cool but sunny and clear.

Interestly, Friday was the coolest ride of the fall - high of 4°C (39°F) - and it was the most enjoyable. No rain for a few days meant everything was dry and it was such a bright day.

Rode around the newly opened seawall at Stanley Park and the view out over English bay was simply beautiful!

And I wasn't cold. My secret? Layers. Lots of layers ...

From the top...

Helmet. Had a spandex skull cap with me, but never felt the need to wear it.

Sunglasses!!!

Short sleeve bike shirt.
Long sleeve, turtleneck sweatshirt.
Quilted vest.
Long sleeve bike shirt.

Fleece long fingered gloves.
Regular bike gloves.

Bike shorts.
Long legged spandex tights.

Long socks. Top just below the knee.
Woolie boolie socks. Double layer. You can get them at MEC.
Bike shoes.
Clear plastic bags that we get fruit in.
Cycling shoe covers. Also from MEC.

Shirts and pants go on alternately, so they interleave and keep out the cool air. Got to keep the lower back warm!

Takes about 5 minutes to get in and out of!

Riding hard to keep body heat up, being mindful to keep flexing the feet by pulling up for a few turns every few minutes - this seems to keep the circulation going better. For me, the feet are the weakest point - if I can keep them warm, I'm ok. The quilted vest keeps the core temp up better and frees up more calories for the body to dump out to the extremities.

This works down to about 2°C. Putting on the skull cap (which also covers the ears) gets me down to -3°C.

Looks like my 2007 goal was too low ...

I'll be riding all winter. Hope this gives you all some ideas on how you can do it too!!

took monday off - rain in day and snow last night!!

back up to 6°C today; snow's gone! - 75 km - had to watch out for slippery spots on south side (eternal shade at this time of year) of east/west streets!

Good ride!!

Wow! Just completed 7 straight days of getting rides in what is supposed to be our rainy season and never got rained on! About 500 km in total. Had to put the bike through the bike wash in the condo garage a few times though ... love these sealed bearings!

Another cool and sunny ride. The wind is starting to pick up a bit, but it sure hasn't stopped anyone. Lots of people out riding.
Be safe.

Good ride - had to watch the shady spots for frost remaining from the overnight fog, but none were icy.

I was about to take the bike in for some winterizing. I was going to put the studs on.

It sleeted here all day.

And now we have an inch of frozen %$#^ everywhere. I am not going anywhere without the studs. That's for tomorrow, I guess.

Gorgeous here when I took the dog out at 7:30. Clouding up when I left an hour later on the bike. Drizzling al the way home.

I think we will have snow later in the week. I am ready!

I've been injured for a couple months and then sick for the last 2 weeks so have been doing diddly squat. However, I am feeling a bit better today so I 20km on my new trainer. Did the Chris Carmichael Time Trial DVD. Ugh. Hard when I haven't ridden or exercised in 2 weeks.

Congrats to Kjeanne for reaching the 2500 mile goal on bikejournal!

I hope we can do this challenge in 2008. I am new to the team and would love to keep track of a whole year's worth of mileage.

I got back on the bike and made it to my desk through fog and drizzle. Going home will be no fun in the pouring rain.

Well... I had a GREAT weekend of riding. I've taken the past 2 "weeks" off - only riding on Sat/Sun and doing other light activities during the week. I think I made my back pretty happy with that plan.

However, I tried a new group for my Sunday ride... My thighs haven't forgiven me yet...

Well thanks for sending the rain my way! We are having the biggest electrical storm of the season today so my 40 mile ride will have to wait. We've had a string of days in the 50s so I've been getting out frequently and avoiding the trainer.

KJEANNE:
It's the Fuji Roubaix Ltd Edition, Full Dura-Ace and Mavic Aksium rims... And it's a great deal too! I already have a Fuji Cross bike so the geometry's exactly the same, and I love that bike so no reason not to love this one.

I'm planning to stick it on my trainer for the winter as I'm still commuting to work on my Cross bike (and occasionally doing some cross). And then come spring stick some aerobars on it for the Duathlon and TT season!
Although I do feel like I'd be one of those people that have "all the gear but no idea"....

Well it was bike commuting for me today to the pool and then on to get a haircut... 16 miles in a pretty stiff wind. Since I started swimming with a masters group I've dropped 5 seconds from my 50 yd free but I feel like I'm climbing hills.

Hey guys! Somehow got totally unsubscribed from the group and am desparately trying to catch up...

KELOWNA:
That Cannondale looks very nice - decent frame and you can't go wrong with Campy shifters and Mavic wheels.... I'm also eyeing up a roadbike although not quite in your price range - another Fuji (aluminium/carbon frame with Dura-Ace) or a carbon GT, full Ultegra. All 33% off and I'm trying to get a decent deal with a trainer too....

Starting to get cold here so I had to dig out the gloves, toe-warmers and beanie for the commute this morning! I'm taking it easy for the rest of the week and then building for the Duathlon season next year - I already have races planned so it's just a question of scheduling the training.
