Talking about hills, did my weekly hill repeats yesterday. 28+ repeats at a fast pace. That will humble you each and every time. Today it'll be speed intervals.

Bill, That's great! I hope to work on speed and endurance during the next 12 months... but I'm also competing in triathlons & half marathons! It's kind of hard to really focus!

As far as getting better, after I reached the top of the hill, they told me their best rider was a guy named Josh. He started riding 2 years earlier and was 100 pounds heavier! Well, they said he had to stop 3 times going up that hill the first time... and now he's the best rider in the group. So, I'm sure he'd say practice makes perfect! Or at least great improvements! You gotta ride them hills to get better!

When I first began riding seriously, I was getting passed by just about every one. After a couple of years I decided to work on that weakness. After many hill repeat, I'm happy to say that now I hang with the big boys when heading up those hills. Sure feels great to pass the "young studs" on the uphills.

I know what you mean about those group rides. I was extremely lucky when I first started group riding. I rode with Team in Training (fundraising team for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). They were all amazingly wonderful and took me under their wing. I did a couple of centuries with them before heading out on my own. On the being last syndrome, I am generally last on uphills, but rarely last on downhills, either on a mountain or road bike. The goal on that is to make it to the top and you did that or finish and you did that too. Congratulations.

Great blog! Yep, I think club members can trend toward the shy side...a little more time and more intros on your part and I'm betting things will improve nicely...!

...and i've been riding for years and i'm always last with my group. Of course i had to pick a bunch of boys who are WAY competitive to ride with. But generally they are very gracious to let me draft and when i take my turn up front they act like i did a big thing. :)

I just read your blog and congratulations on the bike ride.

Just a word about bike club friendliness. I moved to a new city last year and just joined a bike club here. The first ride I went on the leader looked at me and said "well since it is a little cold out only the hardcore riders will probably show up" code for "I don't think you will be able to keep up". But I told him that it was ok that I have no problem fending for myself if I got dropped. So, like you, I stood around the parking lot and nobody really paid me any mind, I kind of felt out of place. Anyway I wasn't the last one in that day and I have been back to ride with the club 5 or 6 times. People are starting to warm up to me. So it takes a while. I think they might be just as shy as you plus they might be relatively new as well. So give it a chance.

And don't worry about finishing last...somebody has to....and better to finish last than never to have started at all!

Anyway I am glad you had a good time and hope you get out with them again. I will be riding with the club tomorrow and possibly Sunday.

I had my first group ride yesterday & loved it! And, you always hear there will be those faster than you & those slower than you. Well, not always! I was the slowest! But, I had a wonderful time!
