My all-time favorite is the HotterN' Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, TX, August . It's over 15,000 cyclists and the celebration begins on Thursday and ends on Sunday. The course is flat but windy. This will be my 5th time doing it.

Hills weren't very much on my ride. It's mostly flat and downhill from Columbus to Portsmouth and then the reverse on the next day.

Here is the ride information for each day. One day 1 I didn't charge my Garmin partway thru so it died before I got to the end :(

What AWESOME rides those must have been!

How were the hills / elevations on your ride?

Hey all - last weekend I did 2 centuries back to back. It's actually the same event. Ride from Columbus, OH to Portsmouth, OH (105 miles) and then the next day ride back. I think I am still recovering! LOL

Glen used to put on the 5bbc"s Montauk Century which will be held next weekend. (I will be riding it) They split ways a few years back but I heard he still puts on a good ride.

Tips for preparing for a century...? Ride, ride & RIDE! :-)

Just sharing all these great rides around Long Island and vicinity. Sounds like Glen really puts a LOT into organizing these rides. The Ride to Montauk being the most notable, but there are others too, most including Century Rides and NO FUND-RAISING required...only $$$, which I cannot afford, unfortunately.

Hi all! New to posting messages here, so please be patient!!

I'm doing my first century ride in October, in Hillsboro, NC. I'll be doing a 75K in June up in DC, and really looking forward to it. I've never done that far, but truly looking forward to it. Any tips you all can provide would be greatly appreciated -

Thanks so much and thanks for the encouragement in just looking at your entries emoticon

Hmm...may have to think on your offer. The GFLBT rides aren't really staffed like fund-raising rides. There is a group ride with a couple of leaders and they agree to pull over for stops at places like convenience stores or whathaveyou. There is someone manning a SAG vehicle if trouble arises and the SAG phone numbers are given out. I'll have to check and see if some of the routes have been mapped out yet and send 'em your way.

Hey Don, you'd be totally welcome to join us on the AIDS ride. It was a lot easier to raise the $$ than I thought it would be. I basically sent the link to my friends and relatives and before I knew it I'd raised $360. I think the minimum amount they accept is either $5 or $10 and a lot of people donated small amounts, which was kind of nice.

If you join the Outing Club team you'll have to raise less - they subtract 100 from the total for every 5 riders on a team. So instead of 300 it drops to 280 each with 5 members. I know we have 6 already. If we get 4 more we'll each only have to raise 260.

And I plan on hitting up the Cornell newspaper and the alumni rag for publicity, if I can.
Besides, don't you want to get one of our AWESOME jerseys? LOL I think I found a place online that only charges $39 each.

STAP sponsors training rides in Binghamton, too, which is nice. Here's what they said last year:
"Johnson City/ Binghamton: Wednesdays and Sundays at 5pm All rides are lead by Jared Bosket (jaredbosketphotography@gmail.com), and begin at Ostinango Park. Please contact him if you plan to attend. He can also be reached by phone at 607-621-3193. "

For that great finger lakes tour is there a map showing their route? I'd be curious to know if they have any rest stops near my neighborhood. I like to let people in my homeowner association about opportunities to help out with things like that...

Last year I did back to back 100 & 75 mile ride for the MS City to Shore Ride in NJ. It was a WONDERFUL experience and not all that difficult. But it has me a bit cowed with respect to other century rides in that these miles were flat, flat, FLAT! I could see elevations putting a whole new spin on things.

I might consider joining you on the AIDS ride...just really averse to fund-raising rides. I think I'd rather just cook up my own century ride. There is talk of a century ride being available during the Great Finger Lakes Bike Tour...last year I think they had a 90 miler around Seneca Lake: www.southerntierbicycleclub.org/fing

I'm hoping to do a 3 to 5 day tour of some sort this summer...still haven't nailed my plans but might work a century ride in there.

Bike Psychos, eh...? Love it...last Sept. on the MS ride I got a kick out of a cycling group named: CyclePaths.

I'm shooting for several centuries this summer. My first is in May (Six Pillars Century)...and there are at least two in September on the calendar (Backroads Century and Civil War Century). May be 1-2 more depending on how I feel... :)

I don't really know.

To be honest I've never done back-to-back 70 milers yet. Although I'll be doing 7 of them in a row for RAGBRAI.

As long as you remember to eat before you're hungry, drink before you're thirsty, and pace yourself, a century is very doable. The last 10 miles were a mental battle for me but that was just the relentless headwinds, I think. If you are a triathlete you already know about hydration & fueling.

I think you'd be fine on either one. If the 2-day one is in the fall you should have plenty of time to do b2b 50-60 milers or so before then & see how you feel. If you're good, an extra 10-20 each day will be fine.

Never mind, that's great! And, I have a question...I am looking at doing my first 'big' ride this fall. It is 2 days & you ride 75 miles eac day. I am wondering if a century would be easier or harder? I could put this off & look for a century instead. I am also a runner & triathlete & am enjoying trying a lot of new races & experiences. There is a Hotter Than He'll in August here in Texas that I've considered, but that might be too soon with my other training.

Well there is an option for one on RAGBRAI and it will depend how I feel because I think it's on day 3.

I'll probably do one in late August that I did last year (my first)- Bike Psychos. It goes from Coal City, IL to Utica, IL (Starved Rock area) and back. It was 97 degrees, humid, and windy. But I did it!
